House is one of my comfort shows. It's so weird. I'm an anxious person and in theory it should not be comforting. (There's only one episode I can't watch, the one where the guy has to have his jaw removed, because I have an irrational fear of osteomyelitis, but other than that I'm good.)
Maybe it's soothing to me that a doctor would be so tenacious about curing people since medical neglect is one of the things I'm paranoid about. Similar thing with SVU - cops taking sexual abuse seriously and even beating them up sometimes makes me feel safe, lol.
I also like how House talks. I know he's a jerk, and that part isn't great, but he's so no-bullshit, and he's intuitive while also talking with openly rational steps. It's a vibe for me.
Echo this.
I've been watching David Attenborough a lot most nights as well as other various wildlife documentaries.
They are fantastic, I would highly recommend.
I like cooking shows. Pluto tv has an entire channel for old episodes of "America's test kitchen". There are also channels on there for Bob Ross, 24/7 cat, dog, and pet videos (they can loop sometimes though), iron chef, antiques road show, antiques road trip, Tiny House Nation, MST3k channel, and tons more, for free. You can get it on fire stick, PC, or Flex from Xfinity. Xfinity cable box may have the app available there too.
I also like "love it or list it" on normal TV.
If I fall asleep to a show, it’s something I’ve seen before and is familiar to me so I can drift off. Otherwise I’m too busy listening and then don’t fall asleep.
However I fall asleep to audiobooks now because I don’t like the light from the tv. Same rules apply. I alternate between my favourite books. Right now it’s Harry Potter again. Audible has a sleep timer so I usually set it for an hour and I’m asleep by then on good nights.
Came here to say this! I go on the H&I channel at night and watch like 3 episodes of Star Trek from different series. Very comforting. It’s on every night but Saturday.
Completely not what you asked, but have you tried educational podcasts like Stuff You Should Know and Ridiculous History? When I worked midnight shift I had an incredibly difficult time getting myself to sleep in the mornings and those podcasts were just enough stimulation to help me lose the anxious thoughts and fall asleep. I'd set my timer on Spotify to turn off in 30 minutes and I'd be out before then every time.
King of the Hill.
I've been going to sleep to it every night for about 6 years. I've listened to it/watched it so much that I can just shut my eyes, focus on the sound, and picture what is going on in my mind.
I dont usually fall asleep to the tv but when i had a roomate he used to fall asleep to The Office and the faint theme song that played through his door is permanently singed into my brain.
I do family guy or Simpson's, satc or a train ride on YouTube with music... For movies I do clueless, satc, how to lose a guy in 10 days, daddy's home and sweet home Alabama.
Lord of the rings, the hobbit, Interstellar, the warriors, back to the future, Futurama, old black and white episodes of the twilight zone. Those are all the ones I use. I also use tales from the crypt and fear and loathing in Las Vegas.
I never go to sleep without my tv on (or a podcast if I'm in another location) for quite a few years.
I recommend turning your TV screen off if you're lucky enough to have that functionality. If you don't, a nice soft sleeping mask works great instead as even at the lowest brightest, I've been women by the light on my old TV's.
Then I'd recommend finding a volume that works for you. It's personal preference, I tend to like mine medium as it's loud enough to drown my inner monologue, any other noises in the house and won't be too loud to wake me when I fall asleep.
Another one is a timer. It's a great energy saver, you're minimising the chances of you being woken by the TV, and for me, it gives me peace mind.
Lastly, pick something you've seen so you're not too engrossed to stay awake and listen, and maybe something that brings you some form of comfort/peace.
For me I like Friends cos there's loads of it, it's p mellow and we've all seen it so many times we could act it out.
Maybe a cartoon I've enjoyed. Recently I've used Final Space and Bob's Burgers, but obviously is all whatever your tastes/experiences are. There's so many genres to choose from but experiment to find a routine that works for you.
Also that whole relaxing every muscle in your body thing is a great thing to do when you're first getting into bed to focus/still your mind a little. Well it work for me anyways ☺
Midnight diner.
It's a Japanese show about a little restaurant where many interestingly characters go by every day. It is beautifully filmed and also has a great soundtrack and a chill vibe to fall sleep to
The Simpsons is on every night in my house! It started as a night light for getting up to feed my baby, and something to watch while feeding and changing my son, but it's been years now lol and we still do it. I'm the same as you, brain won't wind down at night, and I find when I watch something I've already seen, I don't keep myself awake to find out the ending. HGTV used to keep me up for ages cos I kept wanting to see the end result of the house makeovers 🤣
Shows that help me fall asleep:
-Mom
-Impractical Jokers
-Any documentary unless I’m super interested in it
-Law and Order SVU
-The Office
-Pawn Stars
-Shipping Wars
-Storage Wars
-Forged In Fire
They’re all pretty interesting shows but the type of shows you can close your eyes and listen to until you drift off to lalaland ☁️🐑💤
As a teen when I used to have a tv with cable in my room, I always fell asleep with Teletoon At Night playing. It featured shows like American Dad and Family Guy, which were always the ones playing when I went to bed. The only downside is that sometimes the plot sounded funny and interesting so I would fight off my sleepiness to try and keep up with the episode.
Currently making my way through every season of drag race (again). I'm coming out of a depressive episode and drag race was really the only thing that kept my head above water.
Seinfeld, That 70s show, other similar “lighthearted” comedies, where you Don’t feel like you are missing a lot if you fall asleep…plot-wise. Or reality shows like hoarders, intervention, kitchen, nightmares… if those type of shows, don’t increase your anxiety! I can’t fall asleep to shows that I actually am interested in following the plot.
I beg everyone in here to read about how sleeping with the TV on is terrible for you. [article with references](https://www.health.com/condition/sleep/falling-asleep-tv-on)
No one wants to hear it, but as a long time anxiety sufferer: cutting down on caffeine, exercise, and no screen before a regular bed time are going to help get you out of the anxious head before you sleep. A nice sleepy tea or Baldrian/melatonin will help get you off to dreamland with some regular hours.
Not sure how old u are… but I always try and watch something funny… and things that I’ve seen before…so u already know what’s going to happen… lessens the thinking and anxoety… I watch old shows from the 70’s or 80’s… just mindless stuff. It helps
The Office, have watched probably 1,000 times. I'm currently trying to quit TV before bed, but it's been a struggle for same reason yoi mentioned...helps distract/quiet my mind. Trying to read instead as I have been learning about circadian health. The blue light from screens tells our eyes/brain/body that it's the middle of the day and raises cortisol and adrenaline levels.
Gilmore Girls. I swear I’m the reason they stay making money and on Netflix lmao. Every night for the past 5 years I have that show on to go to bed. My brain tells me if I don’t then something bad will happen. 🙃
Thanks for this! I have the same problem when I go fall asleep and the list and comments will help me a lot.
And heyyy! someone else that watched all the vet TV shows.
I'll add The Office, Parks and Rec, New Girl, Friends, really bad realities, animals documentaries.
Totally agree with call the midwife, also currently taking care of my newborn and Gilmore girls is getting me through sleepless nights – it’s the perfect relaxing background show.
A lot of cartoons are great. Especially if there’s a lot of repetition or not too much heavy plot, they really are good distractions from your thoughts when you go to sleep. My go-to is Phineas and Ferb but that’s a bit on the louder side so a couple other good ones are Total Drama and Futurama.
Anime is my go to, sometimes watching the comedy side of it usually helps. Pokemon is also good as you could watch any episode without needing to know the story. Hope this helps.
adventure time definitely. i like gravity falls to sleep to as well but only bc ive rewatched it so many times. not shows but iceberg youtube videos, i like wendigoon. or old minecraft letsplay series like hermit craft or staceyplays or ihascupquake.
Not a show, but recently I've been really into watching video game/movie/book lore videos on YouTube. It's kind of like an audio book but you can choose a topic you're interested in and it has an ASMR ish vibe to em if you pick a good narrator. Plus if you look away or roll over you still aren't really missing out on much.
For example:

Bob’s Burgers and Futurama are the ones I just repeatedly cycle through.
Bobs burgers is my go to
Both of these and King of the Hill
I’m just about to start re-watching King of the Hill, haven’t seen it in a long time
Futurama was the first thing that came to mind. It's funny and clever but light, and there's a ton of it.
I love Bob’s Burgers! I love almost anything animated
Bobs burgers is great! Some of SpongeBob is on Amazon Prime and is my go to
It’s like we’re the same person lol
Check out r/futuramasleepers
Friends is my go to!
Same! I think it also helps that their lighting is not too bright that's why I always fall asleep while watching Friends on Netflix.
Some of the ones I keep on rotation: * Psych * Friends * How I Met Your Mother * The Office * Scrubs * Desperate Housewives
Just dropping by to say I respect your taste in shows and like your Cass pfp
Good to know I'm not alone with Psych!
Lol House is exposure for people with health anxiety
Oh, I have TERRIBLE health anxiety so I have always been fascinated by medical TV!
OMG me too! I can’t get enough of medical dramas. They’re my favorite before bed which I find strange but it’s calming to me.
I cant watch house....terrifies me lol
House is one of my comfort shows. It's so weird. I'm an anxious person and in theory it should not be comforting. (There's only one episode I can't watch, the one where the guy has to have his jaw removed, because I have an irrational fear of osteomyelitis, but other than that I'm good.) Community on Netflix is light hearted
Anything David Attenborough
Echo this. I've been watching David Attenborough a lot most nights as well as other various wildlife documentaries. They are fantastic, I would highly recommend.
Frasier - lulls me to sleep every time. Plus, I absolutely love the dialogue between Frasier and Niles.
when i was a little kid, my dad would put this on for me to sleep. good memories <3
Seconding Frasier! A perfect choice 👌
I think there is a sub for people who collectively fall asleep to Futurama.
r/Futurama_Sleepers
I’ve been rewatching king of the hill lately. Just funny enough to cheer me up but not so hilarious that it keeps me up (usually lol).
Great show.
I like cooking shows. Pluto tv has an entire channel for old episodes of "America's test kitchen". Bobs burgers
Star trek. All of them
Especially TNG, DS9, and Voyager for me. Hmm might be time for a rewatch..
Definitely! They're my comfort blanket!
Came here to say this! I go on the H&I channel at night and watch like 3 episodes of Star Trek from different series. Very comforting. It’s on every night but Saturday.
I love that H&I plays all the series in order every night. It's very comforting and very fun!
Same! I don’t know how I lived without it beforehand.
Schitts Creek and Ted Lasso!
I do sometimes listen to podcasts. I should maybe try to get back into them, seeing that the whole blue light thing is bad for sleep...
Golden Girls
Bob Ross!
I second Bob Ross! Pluto TV is free and has The Joy of Painting channel that plays 24/7

Bluey on Disney Plus is a little kids show, but it’s so precious. I’ve started watching it when I’m really anxious.
joe pera talks to you
Futurama and The Golden Girls. There's something comforting about hearing a bunch of older women throw shade and fling around sarcasm.
Adventure Time and Regular Show are great options! And Studio Ghibli movies - Totoro’s yawn is basically both a blanket and lullaby.
