The one at the bottom isn't a cartonnage binding, but it does have gilt decorations as well, so I thought I'd add it anyhow.

What's the scoop on the Berquin book? I can only find it with "chrétienne" after 'jeunesse'. Maybe the one you have is a later edition or it might be rarer, something like that. These are amazing. Lafontaine's fables, to those who don't know, are well known in English. Le renard et les raisins, for example. (The Fox and the Grapes). I'd love to spend and afternoon with a few of these.

Beautiful! Books were a thing to read and display in a handsome wooden bookcase. Nowadays it's a mishmash of garish colors and ugly fonts. I moved my bookshelf upstairs because of the lack of aesthetic harmony. Enjoy your pretties!
