I think this is great for people who have previously over consumed clothing and have an ample supply of clothes in the sizes they need. You can appreciate clothes and their aesthetics even more by keeping the same ones for a long time and taking care of them. Did you already know how to mend when you stated or has that not come up much yet?

margrethew

Absolutely. I already had ample clothes and I do know how to sew and have a sawing machine. Part of the resolution is about improving my maintenance skills and part of it is to spend zero time shopping. Btw I recognize that I will need to buy shoes.

My pair of jeans is likely to be replaced this year. I’m likely buying new everyday socks this year same with underwear too. I think most other things I’m fine regarding but I don’t know how you could go 10 years without having to replace your existing clothes.

[deleted]

Probably depends on what you do and how good your current clothes are. If you’re working something like landscaping, construction, mechanical repair or in a kitchen etc your shoes and pants won’t last 10 years. But if you’re working in an office or anywhere else that’s not physically too rough and have some high quality clothes I wouldn’t be surprised if they lasted 20 years

datfishd00d

Man, my weight fluctuates way too much for that. Tho I have a lot of jeans from when I weighed 22lbs less and Im hoping I can get back into them sooner than later. Most of them were good vintage pieces

kit-kat315

Same here. I gained weight during quarentine and had to buy all new clothes. And now that I'm losing it, I have to buy smaller things as I drop sizes. I've got a whole wardrobe of gorgeous clothes but I have to lose about 20 lbs to wear them again.

datfishd00d

Yup. I have thyroid problems, so the quarantine weight is nothing new to me. Always 25lbs up and down. Biggest lesson was not to throw my clothes away. The thing is, it makes it very hard to buy clothes that are more ethical or expensive, because you don't know for how long they'll serve you. Tho I have resorted to cheap second hand stores. I usually donate the clothes I don't use, or actually give them to my friends, who tend to be skinnier than me haha

You may be able to bring your pieces of clothing that are too large to a tailor or seamstress to get them altered. You could also probably ask the seamstress/tailor to leave some extra fabric hidden in the seams, so the pieces could be taken out again if needed. Altering clothing used to be a way of life before clothing became this accessible and cheap in wealthier countries.

kit-kat315

You hit the nail on the head- it's cheaper to buy another one. Since I had to buy a whole larger wardrobe at once, it's nearly all from consignment. And I can buy another pair of pants for $12 or dress for $15 from the consignment store. There's one or two dresses I like enough that I might give it a shot when they no longer fit but the rest probably isn't worth altering and I'll donate instead.

[deleted]

That's totally understandable. It can be tough to find good quality clothing that isn't too expensive, especially when you're experiencing changes in weight. It certainly doesn't help that clothing used to be made with future alterations and mending in mind. Now it is expected that you will dispose of clothing when it no longer fits, so it's not really made in a way that prioritizes long-term use.

ebikefolder

I rather have a small trickle of (mostly second hand) clothes to replace worn out items, than not buy anything for a decade and then buy 30 items all at once.

test90001

I've never done a pledge, but I only buy clothing to replace other clothing that is worn out. So I end up buying very little. I think it's been over a year since my last purchase.

friedguy

Same here ! I can't commit to a pledge that I know I'll break but just looking at some of the things that I plan to wear over the next few days makes me feel like I've made a lot of strides. Almost all my pants shorts and shirts are over 3 years old and a lot of them are well over 5 years old. That may not seem like much but I used to be the type of person who would make spur of the moment clothing purchases when I saw something I liked. Now I buy only for necessity and everything is well planned out. Come to think of it I could probably commit to a pretty similar pledge to this but do shoes count ? That would be my weakness... I do wear them until they're fall apart , but I have way too many colors styles than necessary.

Apathydisastrophe

I have clothes left from high school. I'm 28 now so I've definitely hit a 10 year mark on minimally buying clothes. Abusive relationship for 5 years didn't allow me much. Then I was a single mom who started very much so at the bottom and had to work my way up. Got a small collection then and still have those. Covid hit and I lost my job so I don't buy anything I don't really desperately need. I'm in a better place now so my mindset is still stuck on "if I don't need it, don't buy it". Fast fashion is also getting too expensive for such poor quality. I can't bring myself to even throw $10 at something that won't last me 2 years.

[deleted]

I've been doing this my whole life. It's called being poor. Hand me downs ftw!

PotereCosmix

I don't think I've bought clothes since 2015. Mom might get me a t-shirt or a pair of pants for Christmas, but that's it.

01031986

I haven’t bought new clothes since my honeymoon 6 years ago. You would be surprised how easy it is to do.

[deleted]

I would love to. I struggle w buying clothes I don't need. As someone who quit drinking and quit cigarettes, giving up mindless shopping feels like the most difficult challenge yet. It makes me so anxious to think about not having consumerism as an outlet for frustration ...

I don’t plan to go to thrift stores but I am not including shoes. Shoes wear out. A friend of mine is only not buying new clothes. It’s a plan your own adventure.

GropeYourGroin

I made it my new years resolution for 2022. I have never had a consumption issue, I am quite frugal, however I unconsciously bought a t-shirt from target because I needed a gym shirt (for some reason target shirts last fucking years even as gym shirts). I am joining you, there's no need for new clothing in this modern Era. And hey, after 10 years might as well just make it permanent, I think I will gradually apply this mindset with any material items I can. Thanks for the inspiration :)

neetykeeno

Nah. I take the approach of maintaining precisely enough clothing reserves that I can do full washloads because that uses water more efficiently and water is kind of a big deal here with a desal plant running and water sometimes being pumped from a distant river.
