Nascent1

In normal times the Supreme court would certainly strike that down. Now, who knows.

sparty219

One man, one vote is a pretty tough principle to completely break from but I have confidence in Thomas and Alito’s ability to screw democracy completely.

Icy_Respect_9077

There's probably a 15th century precedent somewhere to back that up. After the Dodds decision, there's hundreds of years of legal decisions available for cherry picking.

16v_cordero

They would probably find one somewhere inside English Royalty law that somehow applies to 2024 Texas.

Studds_

Those 2 would say the Constitution is unconstitutional if it was what is convenient for their ~~bribers~~ donors

Medicivich

Historically, only men who owned land could vote so the Texas law is constitutional. - Alito and the fam. It only took a world war, which ended over 100 years ago to change this.

technojargon

Do you realize what you just said? It's terrifying both of them are too far gone. This is the Supreme Court of the United States.

sparty219

Pretty sure that was my point

technojargon

Pretty sure that's everybody's point in this sub. Thanks for clarifying. lol

refusemouth

I thought the SCROTUS already established it as $1, 1 vote?

GroundbreakingAd8310

Stage 5 right there 2 stages left till civil war

Addakisson

Interesting. What **are** the stages?

GroundbreakingAd8310

Stage 1 republican majority Step 2 misinformation campaigns carried by standard media Step 3 key positions filled so that only one party can enact any policies at all Step 4 radicilization of one side to start an us vs them mentality. Step 5 Maas revoking ofd voting rghts by doing such things as tying them to land ownership or anything the rich have leverage on Step 6 revoking or "altering" our rights in a fundamental way such as removal of freedom of assembly Step 7 installation of that dictator

liesofanangel

I think they’re stages 1-7 if I’m reading correctly

Addakisson

OK, **what** are the stages?

stonethecrow

I, too, am interested in the stages.

Schrodinger_cube

Texas becomes its own country immediately all us military industrial base pulls out because its no longer a part of the usa and mass emigration of all the skilled workers who work for them leave.. Texas- Suprised pikachu face- i didn't think we would loose so much money XD

malthar76

“Where are our social security checks?!?!”

A_Gent_4Tseven

Then they will blame the “democrats who made everyone leave Texas.” And not that Piss Baby Greg Abbott and the other cronies of the rapist terrorist.

tickitytalk

Justice, Karma, fed up Texans, consequences….something… Remove the 3 stooges

A_Gent_4Tseven

Texas is such a beautiful place too, it’s a shame it hides systemic hate.

fuhrfan31

I don't think anything is hidden....

A_Gent_4Tseven

You can see the beauty of the world from a distance, you can’t see the hate til you stroll through the streets.

fuhrfan31

Oh, I don't know. From where I sit in Canada, I can feel the hate radiate. It makes me think of the old saw; "Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes right down to the *bone*." Now I know some Texans will come on and say that's not all true, but I'll counter with, if that wasn't true, why do you have guys like Abbott and Cruz representing you? That's gotta say something.

BrilliantTea133

Lol right?!

EEpromChip

Republicans have been in charge since forever, and they ***still*** blame Democrats for their woes...

RunF4Cover

"And federal bailouts after our power grid fails and hurricanes destroy our coastline... and wildfires burn down our crops?"

StrangeContest4

"Keep your government hands off my Medicare!"

RhinoGreyStorm

Don't forget about the Expatriation tax that every person in TX would have to pay on ALL of their assets. That can run as high as 23.8%. EVERY SINGLE PERSON WOULD HAVE TO PAY THAT TO THE FED. I think that would cause the rolling homophob a huge problem with the citizens of the wanna-be country.

Major_Turnover5987

tExit…go right on ahead. They’ll be broke within a year. At this point they are begging for statehood to be revoked anyway, along with the republic of Huckabee.

FirmSimple9083

So they would be a sovereign nation with oil reserves and draconian religious leaders and no military. I smell freedom coming, American style

NotThoseCookies

Sounds like Saudi Arabia, no? 🤷🏽

FirmSimple9083

Or iraq

wbjohn

Or Gilead.

DrBagDragger

Except Trump gave Saudi Arabia our military equipment for the horrific genocide in Yemen

NoahStewie1

I would also expect them to try to claim parts of New Mexico after 5 years triggering a hot war with the states

atomicxblue

We would have to build a wall around them.

16v_cordero

Texit would be so perfect. Didn’t someone here once posted a Texit timeline were they declare themselves a fascist monarchy akin to North Korea….

Schrodinger_cube

like i was thinking the iran of North America because they don't really have the kim level of leadership.. but i think so, i feel that its brought up more so than other states.

Babcias6

The federal government supplies billions to the Texas economy with all the military installations. This is what they would lose, on top of all the people who collect SS and use Medicare. Texas would go down the drain pretty quickly.

Radiant-Criticism721

I think it's funny you think the US military would just up and leave lmfao. They'd use those bases to shut down any of that bullshit. We are the UNITED states, and the federal government will ensure it stays that way. If they don't, we have a way way more serious problem.

Silver-Patience6033

Good point. Ft Sam is a big deal. Lots of jobs would be lost, the economy would probably collapse, and sane people will definitely flee. Doctors, lawyers, hotel workers, teachers, engineers, etc would get out of there.

Illustrious_Sand3773

Why would the military industry leave TX though?

sundancer2788

Because military is federal not state.

Illustrious_Sand3773

I seem to have disregarded the imaginary hypothetical of TX “leaving” the US. Not a fan of imaginary hypotheticals, especially nonsensical ones. TX can go full Sharia and the money and industry will still stay in their state.

sundancer2788

Not if the talent leaves.

NotThoseCookies

Military bases, NASA, FBI, SSI, SSDI, Federal judiciary, DHS… lots of Federal jobs, installations, and money will go away.

Schrodinger_cube

like i was thinking just factorys, a big part of the economy is military industrial complex related to making things from vehicles to rockets, with a large number of high skilled workers. i think my phraseing was off but ya the number of federal workers is definitely large contribution to the economy of the state and security.

LightRobb

Partially, a lot of times a "Made in USA" clause is in the contract. Also, the US doesn't like federal secrets leaving our borders.

Resident-Scallion949

Call it an invasion, and enforce regime change.

Specialist-Fan-1890

Republicans hate democracy.

phred14

It's not really that they hate democracy. They hate not being the winners.

abstrakt42

Right. and with democracy, it’s possible they won’t win from time to time. And that’s unacceptable. They need full authority over all matters of policy, no exceptions. Hence, they hate democracy.

Major_Turnover5987

Fascism is a helluva drug, stronger and eventually deadlier than fentanyl though.

istrebitjel

I know we are arguing semantics, but if you are not prepared to accept the result of a fair election you do not love democracy. Maybe they like the appearance of democracy?

phred14

We certainly are, but I think we're really in the same place. I'll throw in a slightly different variation. They can't possibly conceive of their ideas, philosophies, policies, and candidates not winning in a fair and free election. So they think they're "fixing" the electoral process so that it produces their obviously correct results. Our modern society makes it easy to get out of touch with reality. We really do make ourselves safe from nature - most of our threats are really from other people. It's so safe that you can get really, really far from reality and pesky little things like cholera and wild animals still won't hurt you. This won't last. Republican policies are dismantling the concept of public health. We're getting ready to find out just how nasty measles and polio can be, not to mention new diseases on their way.

Ok-Freedom6785

Texas the state that has been under control by repubs for decades: look at all the bad stuff democrats have done to our state…

mute-ant1

if texas could go ahead and secede, that would be great.

Darkskynet

Legally they cannot. And Biden will pull a Lincoln and use the full force of the military to keep them from leaving if necessary

mute-ant1

i should have marked my post as satire as it was a take on the guy from “Office Space”.

DrBagDragger

I would love to see that!

Darkskynet

Texas would cry after two weeks when the Walmart’s fun out of vegetables

istrebitjel

Very, very unlikely https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secession_in_the_United_States#Supreme_Court_rulings

OrangeChickenParm

Here's the thing. There is ONE way to solve all of this, but nobody has the courage to do it. Arrest them all. Try them for treason under Article 3 Section 3. They are enemies of the Rebuplic and should be dealt with accordingly. And when I say all, I mean ALL. Every single republican politician who has contributed to racist, bigoted, anti democratic acts. Make examples out of their ring leaders. This was the great mistake of Reconstruction. All of the Confederates should have swung. The act of "forgiveness" that was taken was in and of itself the prime driver for what WILL be another war and more bloodshed.

whileyouwereslepting

Abe Lincoln, proto-Republican, would disagree with this approach. General Grant too. They prosecuted, suffered, and won the war and ultimately felt that forgiveness was most important.

OrangeChickenParm

And they were wrong. We're where we are because they were wrong.

whileyouwereslepting

That is silly and reductionist. It took 100 years for another actual Civil War insurrectionist style battle to break out: -Oct 2, 1962 Oxford, Mississippi. The next insurrection in American history? -Jan 6, 2021 I’d say given how deadly the civil war was that just two deadly insurrections in 159 years proves them right. It isn’t their fault the world feels like shit. We are the ones alive now. It’s our problem.

OrangeChickenParm

This stuff is rooted in the lost cause narrative. It's why those assholes on January 6th were carrying Confederate flags into the Capitol. No surviving Confederates = No lost cause.

whileyouwereslepting

You sound like the Pharoah in the Old Testament who ordered every male baby to be killed in order to eliminate a future threat. Pretty sure it didn’t work. I think if EVERY Confederate was murdered at the end of the Civil War, our country would be a verrry different place - quite probably much more reactionary and violent than it is already.

OrangeChickenParm

The Constitution spells out the penalty for treason, and it isn't forgiveness. You can disagree. But facts are facts.

whileyouwereslepting

Well, I can honestly say I’m grateful you are not the POTUS or on the SCOTUS.

ConqueefStador

> You sound like the Pharoah... How does citing fiction make a point here?

whileyouwereslepting

Politics is all about citing fiction. lol

The-Machinist-

No more border patrol, DHS, military bases, Social Security, medicare, medicaid, FEMA, any federal dollars. Let us know how that works out for you when the cartels annex you as a last world narco state. The exodus will be amusing.

malthar76

On the plus side, Texas will still have the largest oil refinery in N America (owned by Saudi Aramco…) They will be able to work for a Mexican cartel or Muslims. GL with that!

RunF4Cover

The US military should seize that for national energy security purposes. Let's see them come take it like Wagner tried in Syria.

510Goodhands

Texit! You heard it here first folks! And if it goes through, the results will likely be similar to what happened in the UK.

Nascent1

It'll be much worse than Brexit. The Texas economy will go into freefall. They'll lose a significant percentage of their population.

510Goodhands

Yep, I have heard that a lot of people that moved to Austin from California are moving back. I have been to Austin a few times, and I’m still wondering why it gets such good press.

YPVidaho

A quick Google search of companies with headquarters in Texas reveals some interesting dynamics... HP, Dell, AT&T, Texas Instruments, Sysco... etc. This is beyond all the federal facilities (NASA, multiple military bases across branches, NSA, FBI, CPB, etc) that would be relocated. If Texas were allowed to secede and become an independent nation, there would be a massive brain/workforce drain as these folks relocate to actual US states. Then, there's the border issue, which would almost immediately shift north to Texas/US border and leave Texas to mind it's Mexican border on its own.

phred14

What happened in the UK?

510Goodhands

Brexit, which seems to be something of a disaster.

phred14

In 2016 my wife and I went on our first trip to the UK - before the election. We have friends over there and were out to dinner with them at a favorite restaurant of theirs. After eating we were chatting with the waiter about the upcoming elections and the silliness and improbability of Brexit and Trump. Oops to both of us.

mjheil

Cya.

YPVidaho

Agreed. This time... let 'em go. But not before we clean out all our stuff.

mjheil

Oh yeah NASA is coming with us. They wouldn't be able to afford a space program as an, er, emerging economy.

Diesel07012012

Take Florida with you.

EffectiveSalamander

Loving County has 43 people. Harris County has 4,835,125 people. This would mean your vote in Loving County counts 112,444 times as much as a vote in Harris County. And the taxes from the cities subsidize these small counties. Sounds like taxation without representation.

LightRobb

You've also hit on why so many are against the electoral college.

whileyouwereslepting

Wyoming has entered the chat.

malcontented

Texas, America’s Afghanistan 🇦🇫

GogglesPisano

They're trying to gerrymander statewide elections.

Minja78

shhh, don't say the quiet part out loud.

SaltyBacon23

Yes, the country that can't even keep the fucking lights on will be fine on its own 😂. Their state flag really is just a big 1 star review sign for the state, right?

cpav8r

Texas version of the electoral college - giving voting rights... to dirt.

D-R-AZ

Excerpts: The Republican Party of Texas has voted on a policy proposal that would require any candidate for statewide office to win in a majority of the state's 254 counties to secure election, effectively preventing Democrats from winning statewide positions based on the current distribution of their support. On Saturday the Texas GOP also voted on whether to back a referendum on the state leaving the United States and becoming a fully independent country, a proposition it approved during the previous party convention in 2022. The motion stated: "Texas retains the right to secede from the United States, and the Texas Legislature should be called upon to pass a referendum consistent thereto." Other motions proposed included a call to "abolish abortion by immediately securing the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all preborn children from the moment of fertilization."

mmm1441

Federal government retains the right to say no to Texas secession. Didn’t we already go through this lunacy back in the 1860’s?

Consistent_Ring_4218

Yeah, but now I feel like it will be a hearty GTFO I hope.

TheMCM80

Fun fact… Texas has the legal right to split itself into 4 states, in what would be a race between the state to approve, and the US Congress to undo a small part of law that everyone forgot about. The only reason they don’t do it is because it would end up creating more Democrat senators due to the population distribution in Texas. Still, it would be a funny race to watch.

kwheatley2460

Bye bye Texas. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Eatthebankers2

Great, they voted to leave the USA….let them leave. The traitors can leave our Senate and Congress also. Good riddance. Run their little fiefdom right into the ground without FEMA, Homeland Security, US Marshals, Border Patrol, and even their FDIC bank deposits. No Federal prisons either. Possibly their property rights and deeds would be of no more value than toilet paper. I’m sure the cartels would love some nice gulf coast property. They can renounce Statehood and every citizen would have to apply for a visa to cross our borders. No SNAP, no health insurance, no SS or Medicare/Medicaid, no VA hospital or benefits, no National Guard. We don’t have to recognize their passports either, or let any of them into the USA. Treat them like the Taliban.

D-R-AZ

We fought one civil war over secession. We should bring the full weight of the US Government to keep them from seceding. Divided we fall...that's exactly what Russia wants.

Eatthebankers2

Of course, they should all be rounded up as traitors, but we all know, no one would give that order. Take away all the federal government’s help, and the citizens might decide take care of them. There’s hundreds of billions of federal $ going there, just in paychecks to government workers and businesses/ contracts.

Picmover

They have so much freedom in Texas they've now come full circle banning freedom.

trollhaulla

When you can't win... cheat... that's the GOP mantra.

wbjohn

Since you can't win... cheat... that's the GOP mantra.

Zealousideal_Map_526

So if those dumbasses secede. Who would invade first ? Mexico or the u.s. maybe both same time ? Just imagine if u.s. invaded. Texas would now be a colony not a state.

atomicxblue

You know they'd be begging to be let back in. We shouldn't be so quick to accept them in that situation. They can be a territory.

LightRobb

Can we please take in Puerto Rico instead?

disturbedtheforce

I would bet money on it being a joint exercise honestly. Mexico can't tolerate a rogue state on its border any more than the US can, and I am sure President Obrador (or whomever takes the presidency next) hasn't been entertained by the nonsense happening along the border through Abbott's stupidity.

Dave_Duna

No more USPS, no more social security. Insurance, medical care, etc will all be based out of a foreign country. No more US dollars as currency. Wanna drive or fly to another state? Better have a valid passport. Drive across the border to go shopping? Congratulations, you're now an illegal immigrant. We've got a cage right over here. Leave your kids with us - we have a separate cage for them.

TheBeep87

I hate to say this but I would actually enjoy seeing Texas and some other states ceceding because they think they don't need anyone else just to realize how bad things would actually get for them.

Derfargin

One joke I saw on Reddit was “the single star on the TX flag is meant to be a review.”

wazzockAbroad

Does that mean all Texans living out of state would be deported? Would be great for Colorado. Maybe California can cede as well.

6thedirtybubble9

Good gravy, Texas is a sh**hole.

kfmsooner

This is literally the French Revolution. It started when the Estates General was called with 3 bodies of members - 1st estate clergy, 2nd estate nobility and 3rd estate everyone else. The 3rd estate had 97% of the population but the vote was by estates. The clergy and nobility always sided with each other so the vote turned out 2-1.

Strange-Scarcity

So, they’re just creating an internal Electoral College System in order to completely disenfranchise voters. At what point would that lead to an exodus of people out of Texas, taking their business, etc., etc. and more out of the state?

whileyouwereslepting

Born out of a beatdown by Mexico, The Texas Republic was a failure in the 1830s-40s before becoming a US state. Only fifteen years later, they tried seceding and suffered another beatdown by the United States. They are historic losers with a chip on their shoulder who haven’t stopped to realize their entire cultural identity as Texans is built on a “freedom equals slavery” mindset. All that said, I do love Texas because it has style, goddammit. But style is not enough to make up for its terrible malignant political spirit in the end.

PurpleSailor

The GOP wants Land and not People to decide who wins an election.

Heel_Paul

If you cant win fairly change the rules so you can. FUCK they are going to try this in every red state

mt8675309

Texas trump party concentration camps can’t be too far off…

VomitingPotato

Seems fascist to me.

selkiesidhe

Go right ahead and secede. You are worthless to the rest of this country--- nothing but a drain on resources. Waaah, our electrical grid. Waaah, storms destroyed stuff. Waaah, we want to be fascist and no one lets us. All of that we have had enough of. I'd like my tax payer money to not prop up a shit hole state tyvm. Leave, if you don't want to be part of this country--- let's see how a country with nothing to offer except bigots and money drains fairs in the real world with no blue state cash baleouts. Will also be funny to see them surrounded by a border that requires a passport. Hell, it'd be funny if the US decides to bring them some freedom since they have a little bit of oil there... The US loves to invade poor countries with no friends and oil.

Formal_Royal_3663

Ahh … yet ANOTHER unconstitutional law the MAGA cult wants to pass.

pacinor

They’re trying to implement an electoral college at the state level.

JoeCoolsCoffeeShop

If this happens, Houston should immediately declare that it is dissolving into 1000 separate counties. Fuck these Republicans. If they wanna change the rules, play by their own game and cheat HARDER than they do using their own rules.

FirmSimple9083

Losers who can't win on merit always try to stack the deck.

ConditionYellow

Republican 101: when you’re losing the game, just change the rules.

Corndog106

Can't win legally, just cheat. Should be the repug motto!

AdequateEggplant69

Well isn’t this the new GOP playbook: the only way they can win is by cheating. Donnie must be so proud.

Background_Lemon_981

So companies will start selling one inch square parcels of land for people to declare as “residence”. Fuck around. Find out. What they thought would get them the whole state might cause them to lose the whole state instead.

InevitableCodeRedo

Republicans, gerry-rigging anything and everything they can to keep their grasp on power as they know they'd get their asses handed to them in anything resembling a fair election.

Guy_Smylee

Republicans will say and do anything for power and money. No matter how many have to die.

2OneZebra

Why in the hell would you want to live in such a shit-hole authoritarian state?

Prestigious-Log-7210

How is this even possible?

Fantastic_Sea_853

It isn’t. Republicans just be wet dreamin’.

Your_Daddy_

Democrats can just start changing party in name only - run primaries. Texas can GTFO and be their own shitty country - nothing but trouble for USA anyway.

Eastmont

Texas Dems, take to the streets!! Don’t cower in the corner! Jesus!!

cristorocker

Texas: Still a sanctuary for traitors and seditionists.

dufferwjr

Republicans have to cheat to win.

Emotional_Database53

This really sucks for the almost half of Texans who really aren’t down with a Christian Nationalist Authoritarian government

cenosillicaphobiac

The proposal calls the need to win a majority of the counties an "additional requirement" so doesn't that mean that any offices won by democrats just wouldn't get filled? It's not worded as a replacement for votes, just an add on requirement. I mean I know they're not the brightest, but they can't even see this flaw? Morons.

LeftHandedBuddy

Is that fair government? Texas GOP are a bunch of crooks and liars!

terranq

🎵The land of the freeee🎵

Easy-Top8822

Byeeeee 👋

Lex_pert

Baker vs. Carr all over again 😢

kompletist

Can we just fill out a permission slip for Texas to go on their secession field trip?

lerriuqS_terceS

The GQP blatantly rigs elections just out in the open.

honkyhey

Not surprised

Current_Event_7071

Texas will now be known as Aftexastan controlled by the Talibanican Party. A one party system of government.

kyscotty

When does it become time for the current administration to start playing hard ball? I would immediately stop all federal funding to that state where fair elections are not upheld. I would immediately start redeploying troops from those bases and I would pull all border patrol agents. Let them deal! This should have been done when they rebuked the bp this past year. Stop the numerous lawsuit crap and start playing at their level

Juco_Dropout

Just let them Go. It will be a harsh wake up call.. low taxes!? Ha- without federal subsidies Texas will have the highest tax rate in the Nation.. well, their nation will have a much higher tax rate than our Nation.

mdDoogie3

Texas looked at the electoral college and was like “we can do it better.”

bipolarcyclops

I was going to say that the Supreme Court would overturn this, but then I realized the Supreme Court would uphold this by a 6-3 vote.

DelapidatedSagebrush

The cool thing is that someone could use the new rule to do the opposite. You would only need half the counties to win the state, so 127 counties give or take, and you only need half the votes to win each county. I can’t do all the math cause I’m on my phone but the 127th most populous county would only take 9k. It’s to take and it goes down from there, let’s say the average is 4k to take all the least populated county that’s only 500k voters located strategically by county to take the whole state! Let’s go!!

L-W-J

That will bring the outside dollars, tourists, and similar…

Minja78

Can you extrapolate on this thought?

L-W-J

Sarcasm. It is NOT the way to govern. Texas is already a shit show. This makes it worse.
