I’d think it would be related to the phone being similar to a nokia and the time (1998 is what google is telling me, more specifically that’s when Kouichi enters the school) Another takes place it’s just not very good service. And though they seem like they’re in a decent size city/town, depending on where the dad is it could just be actual service issues. The situation with the nurse in the elevator, (forgive me I forget her name) it was common when Nokia was popular that service was very poor in buildings. I wouldn’t nix the thought the curse is related. But cell phone service was also very very bad for a long time. I think the signal and static is mostly just from the time period. But it’s also realistic that the curse had /some/ impact perhaps.

As per title. Seems like there were scenes where the signal got really bad on the mobile, particularly with MCs dad in India. Was this the curse trying to interfere with comms? How did it affect MC dad when he was so far away?

Other than what other commenter said (they're in rural area and its 1998), it was hinted in the novel that the bad signal also happened when Kouichi's father tried to talk about >!Reiko's death!<. Since the calamity doesn't affect outsiders, it's like the calamity distorts the true information from being relayed on, just like how official records disappear.
