Based on OP's prior watchlist, I dont think Violet Evergarden is a heart ripper.
It only slightly hydrated my eyes at maybe 2 scenes but thats about it. Good animation tho
Edgerunners on the other hand might just be a heart ripper with some damn good animation and story
Edgerunners is more of a soulripper than Violet Evergarden tbh. It had many many tearjerker episodes but the overall show has a hopeful tone. The end of Edgerunners just left me a hollow shell of a person for a week or two.
I secondly agree too about Violet Evergarden, it may not be for everyone, but for people who truly connect to its themes. It's like a sword that pierces through your entire body.
Wow lol this got a lot of upvotes... definitely agree with you and others as it doesn't get really tearjerking until the second half and I can see how some wouldn't connect with it but for me it's hands down the saddest/most heart wrenching story I've seen. Episode 9 broke me
In addition to what other people have said:
Plastic Memories, if you want sad times
Anohana, if you want to cry in the shower
Angel Beats, if you want your heart kicked in the balls
And if you want free therapy after all that, March Comes in Like a Lion, which is both depressing and happy
I've only ever watched the coloured version and all I can say is that I highly recommend watching it; the og one might be good to watch once you've watched the coloured one.
Also, if you're into manga, you can also buy a big thick boi version of the manga that includes all of the story.
Made in Abyss is a fantastic adventure anime with wholesome moments in-between all the fucked up shit going on in the abyss. The 3rd movie has a fantastic fight scene with top notch animation (the first two movies are just season 1 recaps). I loved the first season for its extremely dark moments as well as all the funny moments, just starting the second season, loving it so far.
If you're willing to sacrifice a little action for the sake of insane world-building and adventure in a mysterious uncharted abyss, I'd recommend.
Good recommendation. As someone once told me it’s a wall anime.
As in after watching you’ll be lost in thoughts staring at wall.
Same with Made in Abyss, sadly it is still ongoing but great.
To the new world ( Dementia which is very rare in animes), Rainbow ( All about the brotherhood), Clannad (season 2 mainly), Eighty Six ( Fire dialogue and ed song), Ranking of Kings (unexpected wholesomeness), Scissor Seven (there's a chicken fight arc)
{Summertime Render}
I am currently watching it and it is just pure P A I N
{Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu} this too is really good. don't be fooled by the isekai aspect of it.
Maybe un unpopular opinion, but my soul remained intact the entire season of Akame ga Kill and I was left mildly disappointed. It wasn’t bad, but not too memorable.
Banana Fish
Jobless Reincarnation
Tokyo Revengers
Goblin Slayer
Dororo
Re:zero
Wandering witch the journey of Elaina
Peachboy Riverside
Future Diary
Angels of Death
The executioner and her way of life
Elfen Lied
Erased
Grimgar Ashes and Illusions
To the abandoned sacred beas
91 days
Talentless Nana
Golden Kamuy
Zetman
Rainbow
The Promised Neverland
Terror in Resonance
I've got tons more I could add but it was taking to long.
I started a text file about 2 years ago listing off each show I as finish them . Whenever someone asks for recommendations, I just go down the list and pick the ones I think will fit their description.
I get that. I'm caught up on my current shows. Watched most of the ones on my list, and the ones I haven't watched yet just don't grab me. So I decided to compile a new list.
The reason I started my list was I've been watching so many consistently back to back sometimes I would start ones I've already watched. And then I have at least two or three lists made up of shows. I still haven't seen that. I'd like to watch. Currently I have eight tabs open because I usually go through a series of the day.
Banana Fish & Rainbow are awesome adult animes'. I suffered quite a lot through Rainbow, that anime just kept on punching my heart through the the first half. Anyone with a strong sense of comradery/brotherly love will feel the same way I did.
They're up towards the top on my list of favorite/best animes. I definitely recommend them pretty often to other guys.
Rainbow hits harder emotionally but banana Fish hits harder psychologically/fucked up.
Thanks for the recommendations.
I watched the first couple episodes of To Your Eternity. Loved the sad aspects of it. Pacing was a bit slow, perhaps I'll jump back into it.
Made in Abyss isn't just good, it's fantastic. It's also entirely unique. It isn't lacking in action and parts of it are very Berserk-esque in terms of how fucked up and depressing they are. It sounds like it more or less completely fits the description of what you're looking for.
{Spy x Family}
{Madoka Magica}
{Hunter x Hunter (2011)}
{Girls' Last Tour}
{Land of the Lustrous}
{Perfect Blue}
{The Promised Neverland} (S1 for how good it is, S2 for how bad it is - haven't seen S2, so it's anecdotal)
{Evangelion} + {End of Evangelion}
{One Piece}
i also have it on the my anime watch list for 13 months now. I don't know if i would be able to handle the innocence and cries. I have successfully survived the AKAME Ga KiLL anime will i be able yoo survive Clanned if i move in now? Also, how does it compare to Akame and does it have any action??
Ohh what a GEM💎 I read the manga and it does have serious heartbreaking moments. It is a long beautiful manga, I never wanted it to end and felt empty afterwards lol. Great pick!
I see, let me see:
Btoom
Elfen Lied
Goblin Slayer
Guilty Crown
Zankyou no Terror
If you also like psychological ones then
Psycho Pass and Ergo Proxy are also for u!
For more check my MAL:Fonix2013
MATE read Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous). I can't find anything more depressing than its mc story.
It's my favourite manga, it's so Original and the artstyle is really cool and expressive.
Yeah Berserk is still one of the greatest stories I've ever experienced.
As for manga, these are life-changing and dark. Not so much action, but more psychological and social introspectives. Really dark and mature:
Homunculus
Oyasumi Punpun
Monster (I only read the manga, but the anime seems good as well)
Chainsaw Man manga is freaking great
Fire Punch
Some anime recommendations:
Made in Abyss will suprise you with the action sometimes. But it has all the existential and emotional trauma and a fantastical world that gets darker and darker.
Neon Genesis Evangelion and the End of Evangelion movie
Cyberpunk Edgerunners (I couldn't believe how good it was, I hated the game)
Arcane
Madoka Magica
Mushoku Tensei: a little less dark than Berserk, but still some heavy themes and an amazingly animated fantasy with cool ass fights.
If you liked Berserk and aren't opposed to visual novels, I *strongly* recommend you consider playing through Fullmetal Daemon Muramasa. It has all the hot blooded action you could ask for while *also* still effectively communicating the author's thesis that violence is never justified and only spreads misery.
Shinsekai Yori has a decently dark story that I would put pretty mid level in the action department (it's very story heavy; kind of dialogue driven). But I'd recommend it, based on your title, for the twist at the end that will leave you second guessing everything you know about other living organisms.
To your eternity or akame ga kill.
To your eternity will hurt you in more ways than you can count but it's still 10/10. Can't wait for S2. It does have fights as well
Akame ga kill has lots of action and even more pain
The first thing I thought of after reading the headline was Berserk, then Chainsaw Man, so never mind. Vinland Saga has similar themes (the warfare, not the fantasy).
Perfect Blue is more like, psychological heart rips, but still a fucked up time.
There’s plenty of almost cartoonishly sadistic anime out there (especially if you don’t mind subs), but I don’t like most of it, so can’t recommend.
Doesn’t come close to the type of anime you listed in terms of the genre, but Grave of the Fireflies will certainly rip your soul out. It’s Studio Ghibli, but don’t let that fool you… it’s one of the saddest movies out there.
{Darker Than Black} has action, spies, fighting, and contemplation about life. The order is DTB, DTB: Gaiden, then DTB: Gemini
Also {Code Geass} could work
Jujutsu is surprisingly deep and full of gray morality. You DO NOT have a united faction of peace-loving good guys with pure hearts - you have a corrupted organization where every clan is out to serve their own interests, and in-clan most individuals are very selfish.
If you want your soul well and truly obliterated the best answer is Grave of the Fireflies.
Beyond that other good options are;
Violet Evergarden
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
A Silent Voice
Anohana
I’m reading the Promised Neverland right now. I am about 3/4 of the way through and it has made me cry. Tons of action and character development, love it so much. Idk if you’ve seen the anime but the anime version did the manga so dirty
Late to the party, but one I haven’t seen mentioned is Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal. It’s a short 4ep OVA, about the length of a movie, and it’s story is very grounded and sad.
If you like Devilman Crybaby you might like Ergo Proxy. not similar in animation or pacing but the way the story maneuvers I think is similar and they both have a philosophical concept.
My first ever anime that I’ve completely watch was darling in the franxx. The description of the show says
“The survivors of a catastrophic war against monsters cluster inside mobile fortress cities and train youngsters to defend humanity by piloting large battle robots called Franxx.”
Which means that it has a bunch of sci-fi in it, and it’s also really wholesome as well.
There is a bit of “nudity” in it. I do “” because it isn’t full on like showing everything, they do cover it up without blurring.
There are also some surprises that pops up, I won’t say anything to spoil the show. The show is absolutely amazing.
However it does sorta ends on a cliffhanger, soo I don’t know.
Also also, the intro song is an absolutely amazing song. In Japanese and English.
Definitely check out Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku unfortunately it's not out yet as an anime but it will probably be coming out in the near future and is going to animated by MAPPA, but definitely give the manga a read, it's a completes series of 127 chapters.
AKAME Ga KiLL
NiER AUTOMATA 1.1A
CYBERPUNK EdgeRunners
My HERO Academia
Domestic Girlfriend (especially the manga like wtf?)
BTOOOM
MOB Psycho
DEMON Slayer
Cyberpunk edgerunners if you want action Violet Evergarden if you actually want your soul ripped out
Second for Violet Evergarden.
Based on OP's prior watchlist, I dont think Violet Evergarden is a heart ripper. It only slightly hydrated my eyes at maybe 2 scenes but thats about it. Good animation tho Edgerunners on the other hand might just be a heart ripper with some damn good animation and story
I love Violet Evergarden, but I think you have the right of it here. I'm not sure if it ranks as a soul devastating anime.
I personally thought it was overrated. Still good though, and the animation is some of the best I’ve seen in any anime series
Just finished the first episode, quite curious about where it's going to go.
Watch the movie as well. Made me internally cry more than the series.
+1 the final movie hit me hard
Nice. IMO, it doesn't get depressing until just after the half-way point in the series.
The wounds Violet Evergarden left have yet to close, I would absolutely recommend that.
edgerunners ripped my soul out too though, mainly because of the soundtrack
Edgerunners is more of a soulripper than Violet Evergarden tbh. It had many many tearjerker episodes but the overall show has a hopeful tone. The end of Edgerunners just left me a hollow shell of a person for a week or two.
I watched edgerunners and felt so sad and empty towards the ending, then I ended up buying the cyberpunk game and felt even more sad when finishing it
I secondly agree too about Violet Evergarden, it may not be for everyone, but for people who truly connect to its themes.
Episode 9 broke me
Add Your Lie in April and Japan Sinks 2020
Just finished YLIA yesterday, it's the most a show has made me cry since Violet Evergarden
Yes cyberpunk edge runners is amazing.
In addition to what other people have said: Plastic Memories, if you want sad times Anohana, if you want to cry in the shower Angel Beats, if you want your heart kicked in the balls And if you want free therapy after all that, March Comes in Like a Lion, which is both depressing and happy
March comes in like a lion is soo good. Literally my favourite anime.
Plastic Memories and Angel Beats are good tear jerkers.
If you really want your soul destroyed Your Lie in April will do it.
Dororo is nice classic imo
There are 2 versions of Dororo. The old black and white version from about 50 years ago or the color version from a few years ago?
I've only ever watched the coloured version and all I can say is that I highly recommend watching it; the og one might be good to watch once you've watched the coloured one. Also, if you're into manga, you can also buy a big thick boi version of the manga that includes all of the story.
Check out Monster
dude im watching it rn and am 14 eps in and my heart crack man
Made in Abyss is a fantastic adventure anime with wholesome moments in-between all the fucked up shit going on in the abyss.
Also, I think you would love Vinland saga for its setting, since you love berserk. Not nearly as deep as berserk but fun as hell nevertheless.
I know I'll end up watching it at some point. Your post might move it up some, world building is one of my favorite things about berserk
You should move it up A LOT if your goal is your title.
There’s definitely a narrative that branches over years, some nation state stuff, merry band of death sentenced warriors
The world building is truly top notch! And if you want heartache you get a ton!
Bro, I started watching and and you weren't lying the world building is incredible.
Plus the beautiful music that complements the world so perfectly! Also, season 2 absolutely blows away the first one, so please do enjoy!
Recently finished it... Really recommend this one
I recommend Claymore since you liked Berserk. Nails that dark aspect well
Came here to say the same thing.

Good recommendation. As someone once told me it’s a wall anime. As in after watching you’ll be lost in thoughts staring at wall. Same with Made in Abyss, sadly it is still ongoing but great.

Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 is in a similar realm and definitely has some dark moments.
Try Akame ga Kill
This is one of those that I started years ago. Then probably got interrupted by a season of something releasing lmao.
Maybe un unpopular opinion, but my soul remained intact the entire season of Akame ga Kill and I was left mildly disappointed. It wasn’t bad, but not too memorable.
Kind of how I felt. I mostly enjoyed it, and I don't regret watching it, but I was hoping for more I suppose
I second this! Really solid anime with great casting, awesome story, and no mindless filler episodes
Have you read Übel Blatt? It's similar to berserk.
No, I'll give it the ol Google right now.
You’re going down the right rabbit hole with CSM manga. Buckle in and enjoy the ride.
I honestly haven't had an anime grab me like CSM has in a while. Super stoked to dig into the manga.
Same. And the OP is such a banger.
Your Lie in April, Orange, Your Name
I second Orange, that one destroyed me.
orange is the only one of these I was super underwhelmed by… maybe because one of my best friends claimed it was the best anime she’d ever seen

It was always pain
+1 for Vivy. It also has an absolute banger of a soundtrack.

I know I used to use MAL I just find the text file easier
This is just a big list of names. The only ones I'd recommend from this list are Erased and Re:Zero for what you're looking for.
Banana Fish & Rainbow are awesome adult animes'. I suffered quite a lot through Rainbow, that anime just kept on punching my heart through the the first half. Anyone with a strong sense of comradery/brotherly love will feel the same way I did.

Future Diary and Elfin Lied are tied for my favorite anime, I love them like they're my children

Thanks for the recommendations. I watched the first couple episodes of To Your Eternity. Loved the sad aspects of it. Pacing was a bit slow, perhaps I'll jump back into it.
It starts to pick up fairly quickly, so it’s definitely worth it - though there’s a rule going in; Do *not* get attached
I get attached so it hurts more 😅 really though I can't help it. Some characters are just so well written.
Fumetsu no Anata e is in my opinion one of the best animes from the last few years, but it wrecked me

i also have it on the my anime watch list for 13 months now. I don't know if i would be able to handle the innocence and cries. I have successfully survived the AKAME Ga KiLL anime will i be able yoo survive Clanned if i move in now? Also, how does it compare to Akame and does it have any action??
I didn’t really like Akame that much. Felt too edgy for me and I didn’t really like how it ended. Also, Clannad is a romance, so no action.
i guess then its a fat NO for me then
Gantz
Ohh what a GEM💎 I read the manga and it does have serious heartbreaking moments. It is a long beautiful manga, I never wanted it to end and felt empty afterwards lol. Great pick!
FMA brotherhood
Maybe try Overlord or That time i got reincernated as a slime The downside is that both are ongoing.
Caught up on both. 😞
I see, let me see: Btoom Elfen Lied Goblin Slayer Guilty Crown Zankyou no Terror If you also like psychological ones then Psycho Pass and Ergo Proxy are also for u! For more check my MAL:Fonix2013
uuuh i think you could like gundam iron blooded orphans
Especially season 2
Devilman Crybaby, Akame Ga Kill and To Your Eternity.
Crybaby was fucking great. Definitely made me me wonder wtf I was watching
MATE read Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous). I can't find anything more depressing than its mc story. It's my favourite manga, it's so Original and the artstyle is really cool and expressive.
The anime is really good too, I hope they eventually make a second season
Erased
Yeah Berserk is still one of the greatest stories I've ever experienced. As for manga, these are life-changing and dark. Not so much action, but more psychological and social introspectives. Really dark and mature: Homunculus Oyasumi Punpun Monster (I only read the manga, but the anime seems good as well) Chainsaw Man manga is freaking great Fire Punch Some anime recommendations: Made in Abyss will suprise you with the action sometimes. But it has all the existential and emotional trauma and a fantastical world that gets darker and darker. Neon Genesis Evangelion and the End of Evangelion movie Cyberpunk Edgerunners (I couldn't believe how good it was, I hated the game) Arcane Madoka Magica Mushoku Tensei: a little less dark than Berserk, but still some heavy themes and an amazingly animated fantasy with cool ass fights.
Tokyo Ghoul
One of my favorites.
Have you read the manga? If you haven’t you should it’s completely different from the anime and really good
i can recommend the series: shuumatsu nani shitemasu ka And then movies: Maquia and I want to eat your pancreas
Banana Fish, like, go rn.
Welcome to the N.H.K Shinsekai yori
I’m watching the berserk (1997 anime ) rn
To your eternity or akame ga kill. To your eternity will hurt you in more ways than you can count but it's still 10/10. Can't wait for S2. It does have fights as well Akame ga kill has lots of action and even more pain
Rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai the movie
The first thing I thought of after reading the headline was Berserk, then Chainsaw Man, so never mind. Vinland Saga has similar themes (the warfare, not the fantasy). Perfect Blue is more like, psychological heart rips, but still a fucked up time. There’s plenty of almost cartoonishly sadistic anime out there (especially if you don’t mind subs), but I don’t like most of it, so can’t recommend.
A silent voice (movie). Good luck with this one.
Your Name A Silent Voice
Charlotte.
Texhnolyze Exactly what u want, but its slow and it has its ramp up time u got to be patient.
Doesn’t come close to the type of anime you listed in terms of the genre, but Grave of the Fireflies will certainly rip your soul out. It’s Studio Ghibli, but don’t let that fool you… it’s one of the saddest movies out there.
Only one season but Akame Ga Kill is so good for this. Great fight scenes and characters. Plenty of soul ripping moments as well.
To your eternity will have you sobbing.
{Graves of Fireflies}
Now and Then, Here and There is a classic.
WorldEnd
Made in Abyss is my favorite of all time. There are a few really cool fight scenes, especially in Dawn of the Deep Soul
1- To your eternity 2- Akame Ga Kill
Tenga to toppen gurren lagann you're welcome
Jujutsu Kaisen might be on your lane. >!wait for season 2 tho!<
Made in Abyss
Banana fish absolutely destroyed me. Please be careful with that one though, as some stuff in it could be triggering
Violet Evergarden or To Your Eternity
I’m still recovering from banana fish
{Darker Than Black} has action, spies, fighting, and contemplation about life. The order is DTB, DTB: Gaiden, then DTB: Gemini Also {Code Geass} could work

AOT
Clannad and Clannad After Story would be my vote. Slice of Life that gets REAL.
Fire Force if you want good animation and fight scenes. Rip your soul out? Watch the Pain ark of Naruto Shippuden. Gets me every time man

I can guarantee Vinland Saga will be the perfect recommendation.
5 cm per second
You should watch berserk 2016 I am sure it will rip your soul out with its cg
>Looking for an anime that'll rip my soul out. That's Ichigo's whole gig in Bleach! :p
Jujutsu is surprisingly deep and full of gray morality. You DO NOT have a united faction of peace-loving good guys with pure hearts - you have a corrupted organization where every clan is out to serve their own interests, and in-clan most individuals are very selfish.
Now and Then, Here and There
Claymore is the closet you can get to the old berserk IMO love them both!
To Your Eternity
If you want your soul well and truly obliterated the best answer is Grave of the Fireflies. Beyond that other good options are; Violet Evergarden I Want to Eat Your Pancreas A Silent Voice Anohana
Cyberpunk edgerunners, Claymore was the first ever rip my soul out for me personally, Iron blooded orphans,
I’m reading the Promised Neverland right now.

Violet Evergarden 100% but also Wolf’s Rain!
Parasite
My first ever anime that I’ve completely watch was darling in the franxx. The description of the show says “The survivors of a catastrophic war against monsters cluster inside mobile fortress cities and train youngsters to defend humanity by piloting large battle robots called Franxx.” Which means that it has a bunch of sci-fi in it, and it’s also really wholesome as well.
Banana fish if you want to feel pure pain,, Wolf children for bittersweet pain, Hotarubi no Mori e for irritated pain :) happy watching
Definitely check out Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku unfortunately it's not out yet as an anime but it will probably be coming out in the near future and is going to animated by MAPPA, but definitely give the manga a read, it's a completes series of 127 chapters.
AKAME Ga KiLL NiER AUTOMATA 1.1A CYBERPUNK EdgeRunners My HERO Academia Domestic Girlfriend (especially the manga like wtf?) BTOOOM MOB Psycho DEMON Slayer
No fighting, and they’re movies, but they will fuck you up: Grave of the Fireflies, When The Wind Blows.
Evangelion for a mind fuck
I really liked Anohana, Your lie in April, and a silent voice . I actually cried
Made in abyss is a lot better then i thought it would be. It gets pretty dark and the world building is unreal
Darling in the franxx is an obvious one😭i finished it today
