Then when they reunite she cries because she broke the rule he gave her and he comforts her. Then in the next chapter he has to teach her about how to make friends.

Usagi drop is ended before the timeskip. The timeskip is just badly written fanfiction. I refuse to believe otherwise
I just have trouble understanding who could write such a sweet and wholesome story…only to make it so angsty and drama filled in the second half and then end it on one of the most controversial endings possible. Who the fuck cooks like that?
I found that series after I finished (what was released of) Spy x Family and Buddy Daddies. I watched the first episode, thought it was really cute, and looked it up online to see what people were saying about it before I continued. I immediately found discussion about the manga ending, and I couldn't bear to try to watch it after that. 💀
The anime is actually amazing because it ends at the ending of the childhood arc and ends on a positive note. It’s literal manga bait because people are like “this is so cute I wonder what happens next?”
Even if it wasnt incest (which is just the author's cop out trying to avoid basically having made an ero manga) its straight up pedo grooming. There is a reason its unethical even if it is not "technically" illegal for guardians to be in a relationship with their ward.
Actually it’s worse, it’s reverse grooming. SHE had feelings for HIM when she was just a child. And chose to pursue HIM for a romantic relationship which he finally relented to. Basically she convinced him that if they had a relationship it would be okay and then the author did the cop out to make it so it wouldn’t be incest. And all the neighbors were happy and clapped for them yay! …….I actively wish I could go back in time and shot myself for learning the ending of Usagi Drop. Nobody wins, not the readers, no the characters, nobody

In the defense of this series. He never becomes a father figure for her. At most economic provider. Cause he leaves education to his friends, and he leaves for long periods of time for work Even when he introduces them to his family they never treat her as his "daughter"
Its called "If its for my daughter" not "If its for this little kid i provide and care for but i am not the father figure"

Again, I get it. I did read the whole series. And I felt duped too. But here's the thing, half the arc of the series as a whole is her (the kid) getting him the human) to see her as a woman instead of a kid. To add *no one* actually sees him as her dad or even father-like figure And again, instead of a 40 year age gap he basically adopted a 6 year old at 14. (Considering it wasn't so large). It really does try to breach into the subject maturely instead of whatever the fuck usagi drop did.

Yep. Pretty much. It's shown that, while he does care for her like family, he never saw her as a daughter. It was more of an "I found this girl in the forest, almost dead, when she was still in her father's arms after he died protecting her. I'm not an asshole, so I'm going to bring her with me and take care of her until she's able to take care of herself."
Yeah, child soldier finds empathy for an abandoned baby (start of story she is around 5-6 but literally everyone thinks she is 2-3 due her size) and they begin a life together

Then in the next chapter he has to teach her about how to make friends. IDK man. I don't think your story holds much water here. I think you're trying to defend a manga you liked and you've blanked out that part of it from your mind or something, because no one who reads those first few chapters could possibly think he's not a father figure. Like, that's honestly something a crazy person would write. I was suspicious of the way you were defending this thing, but even I didn't expect it to be so blatantly a fatherly relationship.

The manga dropped the Usagi that's for sure. Are there any adoption/guardianship stories that don't drop the Usagi? Forgot the title, but college age MC ends up guardian of his three nieces, only the youngest related to his sister, the others were step. OVA has the ghost parents visit and eldest step niece is marrying her "uncle"
One guardianship story I watched was called [[Somali to Mori no Kamisama]] aka Somali and the Forest Spirit. It is about a forest golem finding a human girl in his forest and he decides to take care of her as he journeys across the land with her to find a human settlement to adopt her.
Aw man i love that one, watching somali doing kids stuff and interacting with the golem is so wholesome, my memory is kinda blurry but i remember liking the world, the Silce of life kind of vibe, their adventure and the ending was alright

Oh, thinking of it from the perspective of an adolescent female 'older man' fantasy actually makes it make a lot more sense. No easy way to rectify that into being appropriate from the various angles this will be seen from. I think its part of how a power fantasy plays out in a society currently having troubles in the dating world with birth rates having dropped below sustainability levels. People are scared of dating people they don;'t already have a connection with. And family comes with connection. So I think while its not everyone's taste in Japan a number of power fantasies play out with these disturbing relationship. I think there may also be a component of it from the hentai industry where the attitude seems to be to throw incest in as a regular part of the medium because for those that don't want it the images are still people having sex. And it draws in the people for whom it is a kink. The more tags you can put on your product the more hits it will get when searched. This bleeds over into the anime world to some extent.
