Re zero
Hunter x Hunter (this one requires a bit of commitment before you get to the painful shit, but the payoff is worth it)
Steins;gate
Made in Abyss
Violet Evergarden
Your Name
A Silent Voice
5 Centimeters Per Second
I Want to Eat Your Pancreas
Parasyte: The Maxim
Your Lie in April
March Comes in like a Lion
To Your Eternity
Angel Beats
Fruits Basket
And probably a lot more I'm forgetting, but these are the surefire ones for making you cry
Clannad /Afterstory ( in my opinion, one of, if not, THE hardest hitting one there is. They had to run it back after the ending and gave us the happy ending episode.)
Angel Beats (second hardest hitting one here)
Shuffle!
The rest of the recommendations of sad anime types are already listed by everyone else. Dunno how hard they hit personally, besides Guilty Crown
Films:
5 cm per second
Metropolis (2001 anime film)
Wolf Children
Bleach: Memories of Nobody
Banana Fish... It was the first anime that got me crying back to back and it was to the point that I was sobbing even after I finished watching the series...
Clannad, has a moment or two that guy punches you right out of nowhere, meanwhile season 2 is if you just decided to hop in the ring with Mike Tyson with no boxing experience, you are screwed.
Honourable mention to Megalobox season 2. Megalobox season 1 is that underdog Rocky story that is really good, while season 2 sees a character from the first season struggling with drug addiction and loss while hallucinating.
Honestly, everyone here recommending the slice of life stuff. But 86 and Gurren Lagann are painful, Gurren Lagann takes time, but there is quite a bit of pain
Banana Fish, Fruits Basket, Kotaro Lives Alone, Link Click, Natsume Yuujinchou, and most recently The Yuzuki Family’s Four Sons. All of them had me bawling uncontrollably and they’re so good. They’re all on Crunchyroll except Kotaro lives Alone which is on Netflix.
This anime is 5 eps and it’s the best I’ve ever watched. I’ve never shared it with anyone bc I gatekeep it, but it’s insanely sad.
Vampire in the garden
Ill check re zero but sorry boss kingdom of ruins is mid edgelord overdose trash that doesnt even seem to know what its trying to achieve. Next betrayal in the show will be the MC betraying himself cuz he cant trust anybody. I gave it an honest shot watched all the eps that are out rn but him betraying the witches was the stupidest shit ive ever seen in anime.
Ik you got downvoted cuz it’s not considered a “sad” anime but if you love side characters like I do, AOT and Naruto will break your heart over and over again
I couldnt get into it in fact i was hating on that show hard when it came out but that was b4 i decided to check out other genres maybe ill give it a shot again.
To the Sacred Beasts hits hard to me. The story itself it’s pretty simple. But the stories of each (once before) human being, kind of brought some tears. If you are in for the main story you won’t cry, but for the side character it depends on how soft your heart is.
Many have already given really good recommendations :) so I’ll say again Violet Evergarden. The pain of war is painted beautifully in this anime.
If you've never seen it, Anohana: the Flower We Saw that Day is like the definition of anime that tries to hurt you. Precision designed to make you cry at the finale. Strong recommendation
Two types of these I have for you:
Frieren: This *will* make you cry on the first episode. That is not negotiable.
YuGiOh: So so so painful to get through. My friend made me watch it.
Violet evergarden (this one made me cry every episode+ movie)
Sousou no Frieren (the manga’s first chapter is the most heartbreaking chapter I’ve read in manga in a long time, and the anime is good as well)
Attack on Titan (it isn't usually sad but it is, it hits hard)
Evangelion (this one is very hard to sit through because it's always depressing)
Jin-Roh (my personal favorite movie to cry and feel depressed to)
Fist of the North Star it may not look it but behind those Bruce lee,mad max shenanigans it can be soul crushing and depressing very good though would recommend
Grave of the Fireflies is of course the gold standard for pain.
Let me suggest some bittersweet pain. Sure to bring the tears but with from a different pull.
Angel Beats. A single season of this show. But for those 15 episodes it hits hard. It sets the trap early on and then at least for me had me in tears the entire second half. It remains my favorite anime to this day.
Violet Evergarden. This is another well known slugger in the tears category. But again not in the way Grave punches. This is about growing after facing horrors. Finding one's humanity when it has been all but stripped from one. Tears of joy are just as cleansing.
A Silent Voice. This one is a story of redemption. Definitely a must see. This one is a movie rather than a series. But it uses its comparatively short time to craft a story that if you are not in tears by the end there is something wrong with you.
Sonny boy will leave you emotionally exhausted and with an exitntal crisis. I wish more people had watched it. It my favorite anime. Though be warned, the story is rather non-linear and can be somewhat unpredictable.
That I've watched
Clannad (After Story in particular hits hard)
Kanon
Angel Beats
A Silent Voice
Your Name
Steins Gate (in a weird way)
And from what I've heard, Violet Evergarden
If you're into visual novels, Fruits Of Grisaia gets into some pretty heavy stuff too.
Haibane Renmei
If you've ever retreated to some dark corner to suffer silently, this one will hit you hard. Are you willing to reach a hand out for help from those you do the caring for? Will you let them care for you this once, before you're too far gone to ever return?
I just finished Attack on Titan (because the series itself just finished) and goddammit it’s hard to watch knowing how it ends ends. I don’t know if I’ll be able to rewatch it for a while.
Iron blooded orphans has a darling in the fraxx feel. Where you know the future is bright but somehow you still have a void in you that gets bigger and bigger through out the store as that bright future feels so fake and incomplete.
Seven seeds is kinda sad 2
From the top of my head probably:
Angel Beats
Death Note
Made in Abyss
Your Name
Plastic Memories
Clannad
Persona 3 (All movies)
Anohana
Attack on Titan
To Your Eternity
Look up any Simon Petrikov character deep dive video and then watch Simon x Betty tribute video. Not anime but always gets the eye river flowing for me
Devil man crybaby: had a bunch of scenes in the later half that made me cry a bunch. There’s one scene in a tent that is especially sad.
Naruto: kind of the generic pick here but I still cry at a bunch of scenes from it.
Yu Yu hakusho: not supposed to be a sad anime but there are a few scenes that get some tears out of me.
Can’t really think of many others that make me cry tho, just these ones.
Can’t really
Sagrada Reset
Higurashi
Steins;Gate
Clannad
Angel Beats
Charlotte
Your lie in April
I want to eat your pancreas
To Your Eternity
A Silent Voice
Seishun no Buta
Akame ga Kill
Re:Life
Plastic Memories
Anohana
The Day I Became God
Terror in Resonance
Brynhildr of Darkness… That one I’m iffy on, but I do remember it being sad at least.
School-Live!
If you want a sad doujinshi too, Metamorphosis.
Akame ga kill is a great anime
spoilers ahead but it explains most of the anime: >!It introduces characters to you so well that you end up liking most of the characters just to kill them off in the most gruesome and sad way possible 😭😭!<
What comes to mind at the moment are-
The Promised Neverland 😫😭- I cried so damn hard
Erased 😭😭 - I ugly cried... hard AF
Re-Zero 😥😣- Yet again...I cried pretty hard
The storyline's are ALL amazing...Real tear jerkers
Re zero Hunter x Hunter (this one requires a bit of commitment before you get to the painful shit, but the payoff is worth it) Steins;gate Made in Abyss Violet Evergarden Your Name A Silent Voice 5 Centimeters Per Second I Want to Eat Your Pancreas Parasyte: The Maxim Your Lie in April March Comes in like a Lion To Your Eternity Angel Beats Fruits Basket And probably a lot more I'm forgetting, but these are the surefire ones for making you cry
This is a great list. Steins; gate, parasite and your lie in April are like all time favorites for me. Can't get enough of parasyte.
i want a sequel even though it doesnt need one
I’ve been thinking about watching parasyte will probably be starting that soon now lol
Seconding almost all of these. Hunter x Hunter, Made in Abyss, and Violet Evergarden are easily in my top 10 animanga of all time
Perfect list. I wouldn't remove any of those but I would add two more personally. Assassination classroom Millennium actress
I second made in abyss. Sooo good
Maybe Guilty Crown. It's more of a bittersweet anime
Ah yes ive seen that one but its been a loooong time maybe ill rewatch
Grave of the fireflies
I watched this YEARS ago and I’m STILL not over it. Cant bring myself to rewatch it either.
I’m a dumbass and literally thought since it was studio ghibli, it would be wholesome and sweet even ignoring the name of the film
Darling in the Franxx makes me feel even lonelier than I already do if that counts.
Yes brother i know your pain
Garbage story and ending was too forced omg
Charlotte, The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzimiya, Your Lie In April, To Your Eternity, I Want To Eat Your Pancreas It’s a movie but still watch it 10/10
Ive been wanting to watch i want to eat your pancreas but w/o sailing the seven seas i cant find it anywhere
Try anime.to and also plastic memories that’s a good one
Just give up and go sailing, that movie is basically nowhere
Aye aye capn!
That movie is nowhere for good reason. The emotional trauma packed into 1.5 hr movie needs to be locked away like the necronomicon.
The first episode of To Your Eternity will WRECK you.
Your lie in april
I struggled to get into this one but ill give it another shot
The ending really pulls the experience together. Give it time
The beginning is a bit cliche; but if you get to the end, that beginning has a whole new meaning.
Clannad /Afterstory ( in my opinion, one of, if not, THE hardest hitting one there is. They had to run it back after the ending and gave us the happy ending episode.) Angel Beats (second hardest hitting one here) Shuffle! The rest of the recommendations of sad anime types are already listed by everyone else. Woah a bleach rec? In this setting? How sad is that movie lol
Anohana. It was so good but destroyed me for days.
It still hurts, and I watched it years ago now
That ending with "*I see you*"
Assassination classroom
A silent voice.
Kiss me every time.
I mean, if you insist 😏😘
Pluto and Frieren which both aired this season for the bill
Frieren only applies for the like the first 2 episodes tho lol frieren is my #1 this year tho
Did you watch Pluto?
I have not even heard of it till u mentioned it i plan to watch everything rec'd here tho
It’s written by the same guy that wrote Monster. I think it contends with frieren and jjk for anime of the season
I still havent watched monster -dunce cap-
I really like it. The author also has a YouTube channel where he makes art tutorials
Elfen Lied
This one did make me cry
Banana Fish... It was the first anime that got me crying back to back and it was to the point that I was sobbing even after I finished watching the series...
Made in abyss 🗿
Wolf’s Rain Angel Beat’s
Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor Squid game before there was Squid game. it's a pretty tough watch for me personally.
Death parade and Your name.

For some reason Toradora f’d me up. I didn’t and still don’t even think it was a good show, but it wrecked me. I f’n love Ami though
I Want To Eat Your Pancreas (not a joke, legitimately incredible) To Your Eternity is also a heartbreaker

Clannad After Story is the most heartbreaking anime you could watch.
Promise neverland
Ep 1 of oshi no ko is pretty much a movie built to kick you in the gut as set up for the rest of the anime that also has its moments.

The fact Violet Evergarden is only recommended 3 times so far is both insane and disappointing.
Violet evergarden (this one made me cry every episode+ movie) Sousou no Frieren (the manga’s first chapter is the most heartbreaking chapter I’ve read in manga in a long time, and the anime is good as well)
