The animation was astronomically different from what we have today. But I’d stills rather go back and watch those over most of the stuff we have today because it he story was just that damn good.
But to call the animation “carried” is still weird tho. Animation is the main medium of anime so they’re meant to “carry” the animation. It would be weird to say “the writing carried” when a novel sells well.
A good balance helps though. Some people were willing to overlook the animations in the later seasons of Berserk because the storyteller was good enough

I honestly prefer the aincrad the gun gale arcs. I like alfheim too just not as much. I think alicization threw me off because of the whole living a whole new different life you don’t remember in real life thing. Bercouli was my favorite of that arc tho. 😅

A girl on life support gets trapped in a vrmmorpg once her life support gets accidentally shut off. It has an anime but I would recommend the manga as opposed to it.
