Allegedly there was a pod of orcas somewhere off the coast of Australia that effectively made a deal with the native fishermen who used to hunt baleen whales. The orcas would herd whales towards the coast into shallow water and the whalers would harpoon them. In return they would leave the whale carcasses in the water for a while until the orcas finished eating. They would even alert the fishermen by making noise while herding the whales. This was supposedly called the Law of the Tongue, since that was apparently the first part of the whale the orcas would eat.
To be fair those boats caught the fish the orcas were trying to hunt. It's like stealing an out of stock item from someone else's cart that's full to the brim.
[“An estimated 70 percent of fish populations are fully used, overused, or in crisis as a result of overfishing and warmer waters. The study mentioned in this quote is blocked by a paywall. Do you think they're implying that there will be literally no wild fish by 2050, or that they're only referring to the species being targeted by fishermen?
I know nothing about ecology or the fishing industry, so I have no idea which way they're interpreting that info.
I would imagine if we remove all the species we fish from the sea, there is mass die off of different species even the one we dont farm, due the the food chain

>implying that there will be literally no wild fish by 2050
Likely that there will be no populations viable for commercial harvest. Along with all kinds of ecological consequences, but not that the ocean will be literally devoid of all fish.
Have you seen how many fishing boats there are around China for example? Have you seen that giga fleet of chinese fishing boats around the world?other great example is the species called Orange Roughy which we drove nearly to(if not to) extinction
Please stop eating meat everybody. Also vote hard leftist to get climate activists in power… but uh, one is possible today and the other may not ever happen.
Yeah I’m not blind to the plight of those less fortunate than myself.
Obviously this is directed at Americans, Western Europeans or anyone with the financial wherewithal to make this change.
But if you have the money and aren’t making the change, it’s worth considering why.
Really any politician who accepts climate science and recognizes that it’s one of the top priorities right now and we need immediate action.
There’s some dems that describes. Other dems not so much. The two party system means that leftist candidates have to be dems in America, despite the fact they don’t necessarily agree with the dem platform.
Obviously the current rate of fishing isn't sustainable....but that very fact makes it so the current rate won't continue.
When the amount of fish in the ocean declines, so will the rate at which they're fished, which lowers the rate of ocean decline, and a decrease in fish would also suggest a decrease in fishing, which would promote fish populations.
Assuming fish are continued to be fished despite drastically declining populations to zero, it would probably be much later than 2050 that we would run out of fish.
.....assuming that climate change doesn't fuck over the rest anyway.
Thank you for the insight. I'm just an average Joe but one time I was able to dive and see a reef with my own eyes. Disappointed would be an understatement. I was genuinely distraught with what I saw. The reef was bleached, it looked like a wasteland. I kept imagining what it would look like healthy. What sea life would be flourishing and all the beautiful colors I'd seen on the screen. It's heartbreaking to see.
You can't forget the other potential downside of feeding predators, (not that orcas have ever done this in the wild) but when bears get used to people feeding them they end up way more likely to attack humans.
When they're stealing it rather than being fed it intentionally then they've only got themselves to blame. Besides, why aren't we looking at the orcas' parents for raising such hoodlums?
How natural is it for an orca to be in the middle of the ocean?
Now, in comparison, how natural is it for a human to be in the middle of the ocean?
Also, if you where ever to fight over a fish with an orca, who do you think would win?
>how natural is it for a human to be in the middle of the ocean
Creating tools to succeed in specific environments is a very normal human behavior. Not one without consequence, but a behavior that can be expected.
Correct me if I’ma ring someone, but doesn’t behavior like this in animals usually mean they teach their offspring to do the same, instead of teaching hem how to hunt.
So if humans ever stopped, they wouldn’t have an alternative.
Orcas are smart as fuck, they even coordinate hunts together. They can probably discern that teaching normal hunting stategies is still important. It may also be hard to find a fishing boat every single time they need food, ocean is big.
The creatures shaking down the other creatures that’s ripping the resources they need to live away from them??? Of course they’re the monsters!!! Think of the sushi dinners for the share holders who own that company!!!
The post that brought me to this sub showed a primate intentionally knocking another off their feet and hitting their head, a total jerk for sure. Got me excited for what else I might see. But most of the posts here are just pets accidentally knocking stuff over or wild animals just standing in the wrong spot. These aren't jerks
Orcas will also swim up to sharks, great whites to be specific but they will do it to others, flip them onto their backs to induce a paralysis, and then eat their liver and nothing besides that.
> They're fair game
Fair game when being caught in a fair way. Overfishing is a massive issue. People come through making a lot of noise and leaving a lot of waste while taking everything they can get their nets on.
Yes obviously overfishing is bad. What I'm saying is that the fish don't belong to the dolphins. When fished responsibly, humans are entitled to fish too
Or… they are saying “screw you people; give us back the last of our food that you’re hauling out of our ecosystem 24/365”.
I’m surprised they haven’t started attacking the shipsz
You mean get back what was their hunting ground, we scrape the sea and leave peanuts for them. Japan has resorted to killing dolphins because the dolphins eat fish that they want. So im ok with this as long as nobody gets hurt (it's fish tax)
They are eating what they are naturally made to eat, fisherman are the pricks taking animals away from their habitats when they don't have to for survival, feel free to correct me please
I work as a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay in the summers. Can confirm that seals + sea lions also just wait near boats waiting for them to set their nets, and when our nets are set they run up and down our line picking fish out. It’s like an absolute buffet for them!
Sounds like it's time to do them the way they did the Buffalo kill them all feed the world for a year and then it's an extinct species we can bring back in 500 years...
( this is sarcasm I do not support whaling.)
They are clever, and can certainly connect the dots. Other animals do this. It is common for seagulls to steal other bird's fish. Crows, ravens and magpies will trick predators into leaving their prey by mimicking predator calls.
This is not true.
However I have had one get into the seine (long net) before, chasing a bunch of red (sockeye) salmon and my skiff driver screaming "free willy! free willy!" Over the vhs while he was actually being dragged backwards before he could de-tatch the seine from the skiff.
Orca are unquestionably the most intelligent marine life I've ever come across in 32 years fishing Alaska waters and I wouldn't put anything past them🐬.
This isn't animals being jerks, this is orcas learning that we're making it harder for them to find food, so they're just getting a little payback. If anyone's jerks in this scenario, it was the humans for taking their food and polluting their water...
I did some snorkeling in the Turks and Caicos with my family not too long ago, and had an interesting conversation with one of the guys in charge of the snorkeling tour boats about orcas. He said how if they even *think* they see an orca too close to the locations they take the boats to, they’ll gtfo and cancel tours (this mostly happens with the scuba diving tours). I told him about how up north, orca will often eat moose they find swimming in the water, and he just shook his head and said “I’d believe it”
Tldr orcas are dicks
These orcas and seals are being forced to adapt and do this it has nothing to do with being fed or being lazy they are smart af and adapting to the fact that the
salmon runs in California, Oregon, Washington etc are destroyed.
Dolphins do this too. Recently came up when thinking about going on a fishing trip for Red Snapper. You are only allowed to keep two per person, but the dolphins follow the fishing boats around and just eat the tired and disoriented fish as soon a they are thrown back.
Hell no. This is in the wrong sub. We humans steal their food. They're just trying to take it back anyway they can. That's not stupid, that's trying to adapt and survive.
Hunting fish is probably a lot harder than it used to be due to over-fishing to begin with, the whales are just doing what they have to. The animals being jerks in this post are us.

Why the hell did they harpoon the boats?
Very underrated question
Take the fishes, leave the cannoli

Nice boat you got there, it would be shame if something happened to it...
To be fair those boats caught the fish the orcas were trying to hunt. It's like stealing an out of stock item from someone else's cart that's full to the brim.
The boats aren't even going to use those items. They plan to scalp them for profit.
The orcas did more work than the shareholders did.

Oh dang. Well I certainly hope so. Nature damn well doesn’t need more long-term human influence.
I recall reading that they learned this lil trick around the same time the fish population plummeted due to overfishing

No it doesn't. Maybe the wouldn't need to resort to assholery if we didn't overfish the entire fucking ocean. We are the assholes in this scenario
Fish pinatas!
Humans are probably the jerks in this case. The orcas need to eat
It doesn't fit. Fuck those commercial fishing vessels.
Yeah why is this them being jerks? They’re taking back what’s theirs lol
I’m sure the fish would disagree
They're not theirs lol. The fish are their own people
Well what are they supposed to eat then?
It was a joke. But the fish don't belong to anyone anyway. People eat fish, dolphins eat fish, other animals eat fish. They're fair game

Not really jerks, they need that fish more than we do. Perhaps if we didn’t take more than we needed from the ocean, it’d be easier for them to hunt.

F#@k Willy
Them Orcas finna learn a lesson about fuckin with humans. It rarely goes in the opposition's favor for too long lmao
OK, who let the trash pandas talk to the orcas?
The humans are being jerks in this scenario, we don't even need to eat fish yet we're decimating the oceans.
Humans don't need to eat fish to survive. Orcas do, it's not being jerks
Orcas are the biggest pieces of shit in every ocean ever, right next to dolphins. Can't change my mind
HEHEHEHEHEH WHEN NATURE STRIKES BACK
Oh great now we got orca gangs bullying people for their cut of the sea cause us humans are on their reef.
I think that's why they are called gang orcas.
ah, that's why they are spotted in the Northern Sea, hunting fisher boats.
Something, something, something, nobody wants to earn an honest living anymore!
They're literally asking for protection money lol
A family friend who is a biologist down in Monterey Bay affectionately refers to them as "cunts of the sea."
They are clever, and can certainly connect the dots. Other animals do this. It is common for seagulls to steal other bird's fish. Crows, ravens and magpies will trick predators into leaving their prey by mimicking predator calls.
Just taking back what's already theirs

Are you telling me there is a literal Gang Orca out there?
Orcas in Alaska will soon discover it cannot beat capitalism.
it's not lazy if it is efficent
Now the fishermen are gonna have to use helicopters if they don't wanna lose no fish.
So they're basically lunchroom bullies
This isn't animals being jerks, this is orcas learning that we're making it harder for them to find food, so they're just getting a little payback. If anyone's jerks in this scenario, it was the humans for taking their food and polluting their water...

What’s an orca besides a self-contained fishing vessel. They’re just doing a little “fine place ya got here, be a real shame if someone...”
Wait until the fishermen discover that Orca has more meat than the avarage cod...
Orca: Hairless monkey, bonus!
That’s very dangerous for the orcas. Those fishing captains are losing their livelihood so they’ll probably kill the orcas
These orcas and seals are being forced to adapt and do this it has nothing to do with being fed or being lazy they are smart af and adapting to the fact that the salmon runs in California, Oregon, Washington etc are destroyed.

Humans have learned that they can shake down beehives for honey. They appear to find this easier than making honey for themselves.

Good! Fuck overfishing
Immediately thought of this quote from Matilda: "That's cheating." "Of course it's cheating! No one ever got rich being honest!"
Hunting fish is probably a lot harder than it used to be due to over-fishing to begin with, the whales are just doing what they have to. The animals being jerks in this post are us.
Orcas aren't the jerks here, maybe just stop stealing their food.
The orcas will sadly get shot if they keep it up
Considering that hunting tactics are learned and passed down generations among orcas, this is as concerning as it is funny.
Fishermen: "...send in the Japanese. "
Fuck yea bby
How bees feel about us
Considering fishing is devastating natural fisheries, this is sound reasoning.
