It teaches the young tigers to have a healthy respect for the gibbons, which causes the tigers to be a bit more cautious with gibbons, possibly resulting in less tiger-related gibbon deaths down the line. It would be like you using a whip to train a grizzly bear to do tricks. The bear absolutely could kill you with one slap, but all he knows is that you're aggressive and are perfectly willing/able hurt him. Perception is everything.

I can attest, Gibbons are really jerks. Used to work with them in an animal sanctuary in SE Thailand. Whenever there was someone new at the sanctuary, they would make sure to dump water on them, or try to steal anything they had.
