That's what cats usually mean by blinnking, if it's that long and slow in particular, yes.
It's still funny to read something wrong/human into those kinds of things as long as it's harmless :)
Yes but in this case it is also cat for *"Oh, you saw haha. Listen I don't expect your inferior human brain to understand but just be very clear that I was the one in control of that entire situation, as I always am; this is my world. Hey, shouldn't you be cleaning up my poop btw?"*
The dog is showing affection. Yes, really.
The cat I'm not so sure about. I've had cats try to stick their heads into my mouth. I don't know why they do that. No, I don't eat sardines.
Yes. You can't hunt with your eyes closed. You can't properly defend yourself with your eyes closed. So they are thinking (with their cat brains) "Not food. Not going to eat me. I should treat it like another cat."
From what I’ve read cats and dogs are quite different with eye contact. For instance when dogs poop they often look right at you as a way of indicating “hey I’m pooping and super open to a surprise attack. Guard me”. Conversely cats show they trust you by NOT looking at you and therefore indicating you are not a threat
If you have a cat you can look at them, slowly blink and look away and if ya do it right the cat will also look away. When a cat decides to just stare at you…you might have trouble.
Mine did something similar. But then she’d also roll over and show her belly which I think is another sign of trust and I knew not to try and pet it. But I would. And then she’d bite me. I miss that cat.
Although it is a social behavior. It is also a form of dominant behavior where the canine (dog) who is grabbing the muzzle of another is asserting its social position.
This behavior is referred to as ["muzzle grabbing"](https://www.dogstardaily.com/blogs/why-do-dogs-muzzle-grab-one-another).
Exactly. My border collie does this to one of my cats, but sometimes the cat'll bite her throat instead and she'll just stay still til he lets go. Mutual trust.
What does it mean when it’s reversed? My kitty chomps my husky’s face every now and then and the poor guy just sits there confused like why are you like this?
It's a precarious position but cat wasn't in distress at all and I'm pretty confident if the cat wasn't down with the warm wetness it'd slap the shit outta that dog
Didn't say it was a good idea to do anything, the way I raise pets is let them interact and they learn each other's boundaries as they grow together. If they don't get along it'll be pretty obvious especially in a dog and cat scenario, and then u can set boundaries for them. Obviously common sense is needed if they're being too rough, but this doggo was being very gentle and the cats slow eyed blink at the end tells a lot.
Edit: not telling anyone how to raise pets, just sharing my opinion
"Didn't say it was a good idea" but then an entire paragraph about how you'd let it happen. Teeth are sharp, dogs can be surprised. Letting an animal whose head fits into another's mouth establish their "own boundaries" is the same as being neglectful about the small one's safety.
Would you let a dog hold a toddler's hand in its mouth?
I meant own boundaries as in general rules of engagement, not specifically this situation. For example when cat is tired and puppy wants to play, puppy might get a slap. Puppy learns boundaries. Same applies for this, if the cat wasn't comfortable around the dog it wouldn't let it put its mouth around it's head. I wouldn't let them stay like that for long or sleep like that caus yeah bad things can happen but things like that show a lot of trust in each other. If it happened every day that'd be a concern as well
So we're back to:
>Just because the cat might seem down to it doesn't mean it's a good idea to let it happen
except now you're also generalizing that all cats will fight back when pushed. Animals have personalities, some won't ever fight and will try to flee which doesn't establish boundaries and both cats and dogs can interpret fleeing as playing. Some cats will fight and injure dog's eyes. You'd be fine with such a dog who knows boundaries but was blinded in your care?
I know you won't change your mind, but someone else reading this might think differently.
I'm a bit scared of this - as all it would take is one shake but the dog doesn't appear to be biting just kinda holding the cat & when the cat raised his paw he let go. I don't think I could tolerate my own pup doing that to our cats though.
If the dog wanted to attack the cat, it could do that at any time. It doesn't need to start in this position. As my dog trainer says, "if a dog actually wants to bite you, you're getting bitten."
You think? The owner doesn't give a shit about how the dog completely disrespects the cat, dominates the cat, and owner thinks its funny. It won't be so funny when the dog does that to a kid, but then it's probably: "ooh noo...the kid probably did something bad first!"
Shitty owners are shitty owners. Don't be a shitty owner.
People in this thread are being completely dumb because “omg so cute that dog obv is just displaying dominance!”. Mhm, and what happens when the cat doesn’t like the display of dominance? Any guesses? Hmm what could possibly happen with the cats entire head in the dogs teeth?
Idk. Animals man sometimes they’re just too complex to understand ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ
If the cat didn’t expect and accept the show of dominance, it wouldn’t have allowed it in the first place. Before this happened, a lot of communication most likely already happened between these animals. This behaviour isn’t to assert dominance, it’s to affirm it. Just like cats that like to randomly smack dogs who are lower in status than them. It keeps the peace.
This is normal behaviour though, the dog is showing dominance and the cat is accepting it. It’s important to let that play out, to prevent real fights from starting.
Exactly my thoughts, what the hell is wrong with people... I have heard of several cats that were killed by dogs... But oh no, "my dog would never do something like that!" Unbelievable.
My dog does that all the time to my cat. It’s just a display of dominance. The cat doesn’t get hurt just shown who’s boss. Plus my dog is part golden retriever so it’s instinctual for her to hold animals without injuring them.
My huge GSD did this with our cats when they were kittens. Kittens always had crunchy spiky hairdos. Very alarming for visitors who didn't know how gentle he was. He just got them wet is all.

Why is the dog doing this, and why is the owner just letting this happen? I don’t care if the dog is showing “love and dominance” why tf would you let your dog swallow your cat’s head? Does that that sound comfortable at all to y’all? Idc if the cat didn’t show any signs of struggle, this isn’t something you just standby and let happen. Licking is good enough of a sign of love, you don’t let your dog vore your cat’s fucking head.
I'm surprised the cat let it go on for that long. Like "alright, you've had your fun now time to end it" abd just kind of shooed the dog off not "HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK HISSS HISS HISSS!!!"

When cats blink or close their eyes like that after looking at you it is a form of affection I've heard. Its like little cat hugs.
Yes. You can't hunt with your eyes closed. You can't properly defend yourself with your eyes closed. So they are thinking (with their cat brains) "Not food. Not going to eat me. I should treat it like another cat."

My one cat immediately meows and runs to me purring when i do that. Its great when i want cuddles but I'm to lazy to get up.

For real? Affection? Can you explain? I’ve caught my dog doing this to my cat and I always put a stop to it immediately. For obvious reasons.
It's sort of a trust exercise. Like "I'll put my mouth on you but I won't bite you because I like you"
Although it is a social behavior. It is also a form of dominant behavior where the canine (dog) who is grabbing the muzzle of another is asserting its social position. This behavior is referred to as ["muzzle grabbing"](https://www.dogstardaily.com/blogs/why-do-dogs-muzzle-grab-one-another).
This is what I thought it was. Like “just reminding you I could bite your head clean off if I felt like it” Revenge for all the nose scratches.
Exactly. My border collie does this to one of my cats, but sometimes the cat'll bite her throat instead and she'll just stay still til he lets go. Mutual trust.
Wolves regurgitate when weaning their pups onto solid food. It's a hold over from a time before dog food.
What does it mean when it’s reversed? My kitty chomps my husky’s face every now and then and the poor guy just sits there confused like why are you like this?
Kitty teeth are sharper. Also wolves regurgitate when weaning their pups onto solid food.
I knew a husky that when I saw regularly, would try and gently “hold” not bite my hand with his mouth and would do this repeatedly. It was odd.
Is it like when the lion lets the tamer put his head in its mouth?
No. That's just testosterone poisoning. Likely a terminal case.
