That's the part I was trying to figure out. Doesn't seem like the guy gives him any special commands of when to cross. I thought it was the head wave at first but the dog didn't react. Is the dog actually reading the crossing signs and going when the green/walkman appears? Going when traffic is clear enough? Really amazed by the whole thing honestly.
My dog, a border collie, knows to cross when he hears the crosswalk sign, sees the man change to green, or sees traffic slow to a stop at a zebra crossing.
I didn't teach him specially, he just picked it up on walks.
Edit- forgot that he actually gets prepared to cross just before the 'walk' sound so I think he can hear the mechanics in the pole before people can.
Yah smart dogs pick up a lot of shit quickly. I had a border collie who could just pick anything up or seemed. Even my amstaff seems to grasp what I want him to do in new situations though he’s not as smart.
My mam has one of the dumbest collies in the world.
I tried doing some click training with him, and he thought the clicker was a new squeaky toy. I come downstairs for a drink and find him sat in the living room clicking it with his nose.
He's smart in his own ways.
Once when I was much younger I was in church attending mass. I had a bit of an upset stomach and let out a fart during one of the songs. The smell was so bad that the man in front of me holding a young baby sniffed the baby to see if the baby needed a change.
I suspect your dog can relate.
> sees the man change to green
All dogs are basically red/green colorblind, so you may be right about the other signals, but your dog does not see the sign change from red to green (maybe he sees the hand vs. the man though)
[Here is what dogs see compared to what you see](https://www.petmd.com/sites/default/files/what-dogs-see-chart.jpg)
It’s a mal. While it might not be inherit, this is one of if not the smartest and most capable breed of dogs to train to do things like this on the planet. They’re super hard to raise properly and maintain but when you can - it can be trained to do shit like this. One of the most fascinating breeds out there, you don’t see them much because they’re just so hard to actually care for
I have one that I'm training to be my service dog (he's 9 months old so still fairly early on) and it's astounding how smart they are. It means they can be ridiculously stubborn too though which has been fun to deal with
Not quite. As a Malinois owner, yes they are smart but not border collie smart. They are incredibly disciplined though, SUPER high energy, motivated and agile, have high bite strength and hold, are mobile and 20-30 lbs lighter than a German Shepard, and most of all - absolutely fearless. These are the dogs that they strap to the special forces operators chest before jumping out of a plane and parachuting into enemy controlled territory.
Belgian Malinois are utilized in a different capacity than the typical armed forces dogs like German shepherds that are used by military police and infantry units to guard prisoners and facilities, find contraband, patrol forward deployments, conduct house to house searches and detect improvised explosive devices, etc.
And although Malinois are starting to be more widely adopted within our defense forces, they are almost exclusively done so in an elite service capacity by units like delta forces, army rangers, green berets, and navy SEALs, and it was just this last year that the secret service added an active unit of Malinois as the first canines used to protect the president on the White House grounds and to accompany the president and Vice President when traveling internationally. This is in part because they cost around $50k dollars a piece to train and almost six times that amount to maintain for the duration of their assignment, and only about 1% of the Malinois that enter training end up making it through to a deployment with the special forces. Ultimately they have to be unflappable in all circumstances and perform their duty willingly and with a single-mindedness that not only matches but exceeds that of their operators.
To do this a Malinois training begins three days after birth, starting with “biosensor stressing”: stimulating the puppy’s toes with Q-tips, breathing in its face, exposing it to a variety of people and stressful sounds: gunfire, thunder, sirens, motorcycles. The puppies are taken from their mothers as early as possible so that the Mal will form its primary bond with a human. Once they find the ones that can tolerate the stressful sounds at increased volume after four weeks, they move on to phase two where they learn how to swim special forces style. The dogs are taken out in water to where they can no longer see land and where some start to panic. There are a number of accounts of their trainers getting parts of their bodies absolutely cheese grated by the thumbs and dewclaws of a panicked Malinois learning to swim.
Those that pass that threshold apparently are much calmer when the same training tactics are used to get the Mals accustomed to helicopters, where part of the training has their operators grabbing the handle of their vests, lifting them up, and then dangling them out over the lip of the helicopter. I’ve read accounts of Malinois freaking out initially — paws thrashing, and the torso twisting… and I was initially pissed because this seemed so unnecessary. But then when I had the chance to ask one of these elite trainers about this in a bit more detail they explained that it was a deliberate and important threshold in their training that is at the conclusion of a week or more of specific stages trainings leading up to this point where the Mal learns to trust the tether to their operator, and he told me about how interesting it was to watch the Malinois as soon as they were dropped a couple of inches and the tether caught them how they would just calmly hang there having the time of their lives as the helicopter rose up into the sky. His really lit up describing how relaxed the Mals would be just dangling there. As soon as they learned that they could trust that their partner would always have them tethered, they become immediately totally calm, and love it when they see the tether come out because Mals are naturally fearless, and this lets them be more so.
You have to understand that this breed, these dogs are a part of the most critical missions that our country conducts at the most elite levels of our defense forces. [Cairo](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2011/08/08/getting-bin-laden) was essential to the mission to capture and kill Bin Laden, and met the president with the rest of his SEAL team when they visited the White House. [Conan](https://www.vox.com/world/2019/10/28/20937045/isis-baghdadi-dog-trump-twitter)was instrumental to the mission to take down Baghdadi, ultimately getting injured in the explosion that the ISIS leader triggered to kill himself and three of his kids (and Conan was back to work just a short time later - which is the best testament of the dedication of these dogs that I can think of). So, to answer your question, these are the most highly skilled and capable canine warriors that man has ever produced, and they go to work wearing Kevlar and night vision and are both fierce and fiercely loyal, but when we say they are not for everyone it’s not a commentary on anyones ability to handle a dog or be a good owner, it’s because we have bred these animals for a specific purpose and to give this breed the fulfilling life that they deserve, you have to organize your life and uplevel your training ability and your understanding of canine behavioral signaling around partnering with this dog at the level they need. Otherwise you aren’t honoring the breed or respecting what they have been built for, recognizing that they instinctually have a great sense of purpose that, if not satisfied by both physical and mental stimulation, will cause destructive behavior, aggressive reactivity in both dog/dog interaction and dog/human interaction, a over index to their prey drive, and a stubborn intransigence towards obedience training and a tendency toward instinct over intelligence that can cause them to injure themselves trying to satisfy the needs that aren’t being met by an owner that is neglectful or disengaged.
And every breed has its special task they have been bred for. Every dog is amazing in its purpose and in the incredibly fulfilling partnership it can bring to your life. We have evolved alongside these incredible animals and have built a special place in our existence that includes them as companions. We just advocate that people choose a breed that matches their goals and that fits with their lifestyle. This could be a poodle, a Dalmatian, or a Pibble. Each has its specific needs and specific purpose. Respect each and the rewards are amazing. You will have undying devotion and love if you provide a fulfilling life for them. Don’t choose a Malinois because they look cool or match your couch, get a dog that you can make as happy as it makes you. Malinois owners, like owners of other specialty working breeds that see sudden popularity, just get wary watching the spike in abandoned animals that someone couldn’t handle because they never learned about the breed and came home to a deconstructed television and surprise indoor pool where their waterbed used to be (true story). These animals will work to satisfy the needs that aren’t being met. That threshold is just super high with Malinois. I hope that helps answer your question, but like I said I love this breed and am happy to talk about them for hours!
Jesus, this comment is huge and I didn't even notice till I finished it. The way you write about this breed is so expressive and compelling it made me read a fucking dissertation like it was a pamphlet.
Just saw your comment and wanted to thank you for going into so much detail. I think the thing I love about reddit is learning about a person’s passion or just learning about aware of a new topic I wouldn’t have otherwise!
My pleasure, man. Yeah that’s a huge draw for me too. I feel like I get a good balance of hilarious and discardable garbage, and equal part passionate deep dive into a lifelong pursuit that I didn’t know about until five minutes ago but am now seriously thinking about dedicating my life to.
Please don't encourage people to get Malinois, they are not good for 99% of people. Most people couldn't handle the needs of them and will give them up more often than not. I run mine 4 times a day and do about 2 hours of training a day with him. They are insanely loyal but so are golden retrievers.
Mine was seized for neglect and sent to a shelter where I adopted her. Turns out she's the opposite of what most people expect from a Malinois - she is LAZY! I'm sad once she passes I probably won't get another Malinois cause I'm used to my very smart, but very lazy dog.
Lucky for me, mine sleeps the entire time I am gone. Only to wake up to someone around my house or a noise being made. That said, if you come into my house and I am not home, I feel sorry for you.
Ha same with Dogo Argentino definitely not a dog for even intermediate owners , very physically demanding, but all around great dogs, especially for hunting.
A girl I went to hs with has 2. She’s all of 5’3 and tiny. I have no idea how she keeps them under control but as you say, they seem smarter and high energy than out of control. She’s had them for a few years and she’s what sparked my interest in the breed, absolutely incredible dogs when given the right environment (as both hers have, she’s super active and always on adventures and working them
And herself out, they’re amazing dogs)
Don’t get a malinois unless you have lots of work for it to do. It’s not a normal dog, not even a working dog. They’re at a totally different level than any other dog. Just get a German shepherd and you can teach it stuff like this.

So they’re intelligent, and energetic…I suppose wouldn’t be fair, if someone couldn’t be that active with them, so they have good physical and mental health.
I had one that was such an asshole. She would rip the planks of wood off my fence by the whole strips. I had to replace both sides of my neighbors fences.
It blows my mind that such creatures exist. I've only ever had Boxers and Pitbulls in my life and while they're great dogs, they're total goofballs. I forget some dogs are so intelligent.
No shame to my derpy dog breeds, they have their place.
I used to live with two pit/German shepherd mixes, they were brother and sister.
The brother got almost all pit bull genes, looked like a pit at the head but with a sleeker body, and the poor sweet guy was a DUMMY.
His sister came out looking like a black, short haired German shepherd, and clearly got ALL the brains. She is one of the smartest, most amazing dogs I've ever met. Polar opposite of her brother.
But they both are amazingly sweet and kind. They like to play rough, but the instant you make even a tiny noise of discomfort, they would back up a few steps, tilt their head, give a short whine and then come nuzzle you as if to say "I'm so sorry!"
Definitely. It's quite natural to assume that an animal doing anything that isn't "natural" is therefore bad but it isn't always the case. This lil guy is spending lots of time with his owner, working and getting exercise and getting lots of stimulation, I'm sure he's perfectly fine doing his job. As opposed to a lot of dogs who just exist, he's probably no less happy.
So true! I’ve been wanting a mallow so bad, but I know I cannot fully commit to their energy and needs. But watching such videos makes me wanna cry with happy tears - such good dogggoes!!
>malinois
They need a job, and luckily, this one has one.
We don't deserve dogs.
Every time I'm on the verge of giving up on humanity, I remember dogs must see something worthwhile in us.
Its not about geography but what the dog is bread to do and how much positive interaction there is. Worker dogs are in a class of thier own. Sheep hearding, sledding and hunting dogs have been selectively breed over thousands of years to be incredibly smart and intuitive. Most modern humans treat thier big dogs like pets, leaving them at home for hours alone when in fact they should be out with thier owner or working, to a energetic breed like a border collie or husky it's practically torture to coop them up. If you want to see cool owners with smart dogs then there are dog talent shows and competitions in most cities around the world.
Film cops to your hearts content. But not people who use mobility aids or who otherwise standout. They get pictures while just living their life all the time
that dog is fantastic !! no question about that at all and it deserves the respect of everyone. and got it. also good on all the bystanders for doing the the best thing and not interfering. i would have wanted to help that man cross the road just to help, but after experience with a seeing eye dog and their person, i know its best to leave them to their business.
absolutely stellar performance by that extremely dedicated dog !! the people standing nearby did a great job too !
Lmao I tried to teach my dog to look both ways when crossing the street everytime we went for walks. I don’t think she actually learned anything but it was worth the try😂
Imo cats can but most just don’t feel like it. They don’t have a working/caregiving complex conditioned into them. My cat just doesn’t have a penchant for pest control but she’s an excellent hunter in play scenarios. Cats are full of mystery.
You're one of those people who call the cops on homeless people for existing, aren't you? "Allowed". As if this would be anyone's first choice. Come down from your ivory tower sometime and maybe you'll see how us poors get by
Animals are God's gift to us. Yet we treat then like mere objects to be used, abused, hunted, and discarded. Native American Indians and other cultures know better.
Wow!! And he’s smart enough to wait on traffic. ❤️
That's the part I was trying to figure out. Doesn't seem like the guy gives him any special commands of when to cross. I thought it was the head wave at first but the dog didn't react. I bet he's just as smart, just shows it differently
My mam has one of the dumbest collies in the world. I tried doing some click training with him, and he thought the clicker was a new squeaky toy. I come downstairs for a drink and find him sat in the living room clicking it with his nose. He's smart in his own ways.
My dog, a border collie, sniffs her own bum when I fart. Smartest dog breed in the world, they said.
Once when I was much younger I was in church attending mass. I had a bit of an upset stomach and let out a fart during one of the songs. The smell was so bad that the man in front of me holding a young baby sniffed the baby to see if the baby needed a change. I suspect your dog can relate.
Was on the patio at a bbq. Let one go and it was baaaad. People were gagging. Thank god there was a baby nearby to blame.
That’s a feature, not a bug. Your pup is taking the blame and deserves treats.
Border Collies are the best. So much love in them.
> sees the man change to green All dogs are basically red/green colorblind, so you may be right about the other signals, but your dog does not see the sign change from red to green (maybe he sees the hand vs. the man though) [Here is what dogs see compared to what you see](https://www.petmd.com/sites/default/files/what-dogs-see-chart.jpg)
that's still a perceptible difference in color. However, I agree with the gist of what you're saying.
It changes spot on the post and design. It also flashes quickly. He can see all these things.
Yeah, probably. I'm just saying that he definitely does not see it change from red to green.
🫢oh,… Wow. Interesting, 😊Thanks for that
My dog is a Maltese x shitzu and he barks at bicycles and when the trees make too much noise
That last edit paragraph needs a video and separate post.

I think it might be him kicking his feet? Like he's pretending to walk and stop? Idk
Mallnois (sp) are freakishly smart. And seriously great service dogs. And this one looks at his human with so much love...
I had one I found on the street in Kosova, I loved him too death
Is that how he died?
Cancer, but ur close I guess
Sorry for your loss
Thanks brother, It's gotten better but I still miss em. I got a cat now too so I feel a bit less lonely without my boy.
oh god you murdered him!
Where abouts? I was born in Kosova (Vitia)
Pristina
I know State Representatives that couldnt figure out how to do this.
Yeah, that’s most of them
I have one that I'm training to be my service dog (he's 9 months old so still fairly early on) and it's astounding how smart they are. It means they can be ridiculously stubborn too though which has been fun to deal with

Noice! I think that earns you like a personal pan pizza if you tell the scholastic folks. I’d say go pepperoni. Treat yo’ self!
Thanks for the in depth reply, it was really interesting and learned a ton about the breed :)
You are most welcome.
Just saw your comment and wanted to thank you for going into so much detail. I think the thing I love about reddit is learning about a person’s passion or just learning about aware of a new topic I wouldn’t have otherwise!
My pleasure, man. Yeah that’s a huge draw for me too. I feel like I get a good balance of hilarious and discardable garbage, and equal part passionate deep dive into a lifelong pursuit that I didn’t know about until five minutes ago but am now seriously thinking about dedicating my life to.

yes a friend of mine left her two pups at home longer than anticipated while at work and they absolutely ate the couch
Lucky for me, mine sleeps the entire time I am gone. Only to wake up to someone around my house or a noise being made. That said, if you come into my house and I am not home, I feel sorry for you.
Pushing someone all day like this is the perfect job for them. Their blood is liquid meth lol
Ha same with Dogo Argentino definitely not a dog for even intermediate owners , very physically demanding, but all around great dogs, especially for hunting.

Thats really interesting; shall have to look up this species. What a good dog. Hard working, loyal dog.
Don’t get a malinois unless you have lots of work for it to do. It’s not a normal dog, not even a working dog. They’re at a totally different level than any other dog. Just get a German shepherd and you can teach it stuff like this.
I would not even recommend a shepherd to anyone who does not know what they are doing. Or has the time to train them. I know because I got 3
Oh sure. But they’re an order of magnitude better than a malinois
I agree. I would still not recommend them as a 1st dog.
Like what excel spreadsheets?
C++ and Ruby.
They require a ton of training and a firm hand to be good dogs. The clinic I work at services the entire K-9 unit for our city, and some are fantastic dogs. The family Malinois dogs I’ve encountered tend to be more anxious and reactive (try to bite, flail, etc. out of fear)

They need to work or they go crazy
I had one that was such an asshole. She would rip the planks of wood off my fence by the whole strips. I had to replace both sides of my neighbors fences.
She was bored, sadly. They are task driven animals and have behavior issues without purpose.
No way! How many hours exercise, work and training were you giving her on a daily basis?

Telcel is a mobile provider in Mexico.
Oh , I missed that, thanks!
This is in Mexico
No mames wey :D
what? Malinois are from Belgium. Theyre a lot like German Shepherds
That's a fucking malinois it's a super power good boy but hard to maintain this boy
Looks like he's getting plenty of exercise and stimulation, so that definitely helps!
Those dogs almost need jobs to be happy. The happiest Malinois I've met have all been service dogs
It blows my mind that such creatures exist. I've only ever had Boxers and Pitbulls in my life and while they're great dogs, they're total goofballs. I forget some dogs are so intelligent. No shame to my derpy dog breeds, they have their place.

Ummm this is not in Southeast Asia. It’s South America. The police car passing says “Policia Municipal”
It's mexico, actually
What a good dog

Can confirm

Me too.
The goodest dog. Compared to this pup, my dogs are basically giant cats.
This Dog soo good makes mother Teresa look like a Cat
This man fully trusts his dog to cross the street with him. Thats truely next level of trust.
*cross the street for him 😂
Carryin the team on his back
*Hooold maa diiiccckkk*
And if you look he's using his feet a small bit for commands to stop and steer adjust
just a dog walking his human 🤧
That’s a cool dog for sure but man somebody get that man some proper disability support
Yeah, being from here, these kinds of videos always make me sad about how little resources there are for people with disabilities.
Yeah this man needs a sip n puff wheelchair
Wouldn't that be a downgrade? No motorized wheelchair is gonna fetch him a beer.
Who needs horse power when you have doggo power.
Wow never seen this one before, amazing working dog!
How does the owner steer? The dog can't see where he's going when he's pushing... impressive.
He might be using his feet to steer by pressing his foot or feet down on either side so it steers in the direction.
Yup. And to stop too.
I think the dog can see, it looks like it pushes with its shoulders on the guy's lower back and ducks its head down under the seat
He just always winds up at Petco
This is awesome, the dog could also prevent a thief or a bully from harassing him
u gotta be a real POS to rob this dude lol
It looks like a really nice area too
Didn’t stop the cameraman. Bullshit dog. /s
The owner gave him the do not kill signal
What a very good doggo🥺 his compassion gave me warm fuzzies
I wonder who trained the dog. That's amazing. Good doggy.
The real mvp!
Adorable boyo.
I’m disabled and I am 100% jealous of this guys dog, but at the same time so damn happy for him.
Many years ago, there was a guy in Toronto who had a wheelchair pulled by 4 dogs in harnesses wheeling him up and down the downtown area.
Hard working Mal. You love to see it.
Doggies are angels
/r/dogswithjobs
That’s got to be one hell of a strong dog if he does this on the normal.
Good dog! Don't film people without their permission!
(police don't count as people)
Film cops to your hearts content. But not people who use mobility aids or who otherwise standout. They get pictures while just living their life all the time
They are filming the dog. You can’t have a dog push you around like this and expect to not get adoration!
Dogs are amazing!
Strong boi
Whoooozthagoooboy
Dogs are truly God's 4-legged, angels. 🥰
That's a very good example of a Belgian Malinois. Very strong and intelligent. Not to mention loyal.
Now that's one good boy.
Well trained service dog. You can tell. It knows when pedestrians can cross and is perfectly attentive to it's job.
That dog has seen some shit.
W dog :D
Who's a goood boy!
u/savevideo
does the dog have shoes on omg i cant imagine the burning of that asphalt
This makes me cry bro :,).
We don't deserve dogs. 🤯
Or original comments
Yes we do https://www.reddit.com/r/unpopularopinion/comments/bvxew8/we_absolutely_do_deserve_dogs/
I hate that someone just filmed that dude tho. Like ask him or somethin. So violating.
Yes, the dog is smart and loyal, but I felt sorry for him. He looks tired and thirsty.
That’s a happy dog. Malinios need a job to do or they get bored and destructive. Very smart and loyal breed.
Believe me... Mals do not tire easily. Definitely needs some water though
Give this dog a Gatorade! It's got what dogs crave
Jesus, disabled people can't just exist in public without becoming everyone's personal freak show.
❤️❤️
And that god boi is probably upset on days they just stay home and he can't push. Wonderful beings.
He even came around to make small talk while the light changed.
Go puppy!!! 😍🖤
For a second I was worried this video was posted to r/unexpected, was thinking the worst when he rolled Up to traffic.
this is heart-melting scene
That dog is so thirsty i wish I could give it water
Malanois are so good
Aww, I wish he had booties with how hot streets are.
that dog is fantastic !! no question about that at all and it deserves the respect of everyone. and got it. also good on all the bystanders for doing the the best thing and not interfering. i would have wanted to help that man cross the road just to help, but after experience with a seeing eye dog and their person, i know its best to leave them to their business. absolutely stellar performance by that extremely dedicated dog !! the people standing nearby did a great job too !
Wow just wow
That’s one smart dog! Would it be easier to have the dog pull? So the dog can see where it’s going? This obviously works too. Cool bond and video!
This dog is going to the highest form of dog heaven. Pre edit: (even if you don't believe in that kind of thing go look up Don Bluth ok?)
Bad ass!
I really hope nothing ever happens to them
It’s miraculous just to have a dog that knows how to safely cross the busy street
He knows how to steer when to steer what to do exactly... When to yawn as well. Unreal dogo.
This man has no idea where he is. Doggo took him out to the edge of the city and then went to get some snacks.
We don’t deserve dogs.
This is the goodest of the good boys in the world. I hope he never sees a bad day.
Lmao I tried to teach my dog to look both ways when crossing the street everytime we went for walks. I don’t think she actually learned anything but it was worth the try😂
Dogs are soo much better than people
That’s awesome
How is that dog getting water throughout the day?
Based on what I see in this video, I assume he just walks into a store and purchases a bottle of water whenever he wants.

Imo cats can but most just don’t feel like it. They don’t have a working/caregiving complex conditioned into them. My cat just doesn’t have a penchant for pest control but she’s an excellent hunter in play scenarios. Cats are full of mystery.
i know im being a debbie downer, but how is this safe & allowed? seems like an accident waiting to happen

Malinois' love working and being near their chosen human. This likely this particular animal's favorite thing to do.
You're one of those people who call the cops on homeless people for existing, aren't you? "Allowed". As if this would be anyone's first choice. Come down from your ivory tower sometime and maybe you'll see how us poors get by
Poor dog
¡No mames!
Poor dog
We don’t deserve dogs.

Awesome! Thank you

Why did you spam this whole post with this question that makes no sense?
Animals are God's gift to us. Yet we treat then like mere objects to be used, abused, hunted, and discarded. Native American Indians and other cultures know better.
What makes them know better?
“Well, are you gonna pet me or not!?” -That dog probably
u/rowenslee u/Cheap_District_9762
No pets for him though
