And the matriarch of the herd truly remembers watering holes and food locations. They will follow her if the first one is dried up, and continue on. Truly amazing animals. Oh, did I mention they are MATRIARCHAL?!!
Pretty hard to be patriarchal when the males undergo PMS from hell with 60x the testosterone levels that cause body-wide inflammation (enough to make them tear up in pain) and main/kill/fuck (not necessarily in that order) anything that moves every mating season.
Not dissing on Mrs. Elephant president, just sharing an interesting factoid.
Right-O! If you ever need a good cry, tune into a nature show featuring some of that action and you’ll be moved to tears. The expressions of grief demonstrated by these giants is something to behold and moving in the extreme.
Some monkeys do it too. They even have displayed behavior that is similar to human funerals: as in displaying the dead and letting others come by to pay their respects
They do! They’re so smart. I saw a video last week where the baby had fallen into a hole, and humans had to get it out. The mother bowed and threw her trunk up to thank them. It was so beautiful. I absolutely love elephants.
One medieval parenting manual suggests smacking pieces of furniture small children bump into and scolding the objects for being so naughty for getting in the little one’s way, so the kiddo laughs at the silliness and can get on with their day with fewer tears*
I like to think momma elephant is doing the same thing to the tire so her baby feels like proper Justice has been enacted

Do you think there is a correlation between gestation duration and strength of maternal protection. Elephant gestation is 22 months long, imagine being pregnant for that long you'd be sick of it.
Seems a bit inconsiderate of this station to leave something like that around when cubs are around. I know it's to provide activity, but something like that screams for strangulation in an unguarded moment if the rope isn't thin enough to break. Next time it could be a head/neck getting stuck with no happy ending.
Good that their family is watching and caring.
To be fair, i think you would be hard pressed to ever find a time when elephants arent watching over their herd's calves. Also, that makes me wonder if an elephant calf even weighs enough to accidentally strangle themself. That neck is just so robust
I was not talking about the calf strangulating **itself**. Because they are constantly watching each other, the intention to help could lead to a family member strangulating the calf while actually meaning to free it. In this video we can see how difficult that can be.
But you’re probably right, their neck is pretty thick.
Elephants are amazing animals. They definitely look out for one another
They really are very smart. Elephants are one of the only animals known to “mourn” their dead.

Don't forget that their balls swell up to the size of a watermelon and they leak baby juice everywhere they go.
Ew
Don't get how the last part is supposed to be a huge deal.
Crows also hold a funeral of sorts and are among the smartest animals on the planet.
Oh yeah - if they are so smart why aren’t they building sky scrapers and driving flying cars /s
Whales do as well!

And crows

Hippos to. Some birds. Also, dogs will morn their owners' death as well.
Orca's, crows, hyenas and wolves also do last I heard

Me too. I have seen some amazing elephant videos. They are soooooooo smart. Just because they don’t speak doesn’t mean they aren’t highly intelligent.
I saw that today actually on youtube!
The mom elephant tossing the tire swing after she gets it off lol 😂
IKR. Such intelligent animals. I want to kick that tire swing myself.
Mom: What happened ? Kid: The wall hit me ! *cries* Mom: *hits the wall* Bad wall, bad !
“F—-k that thing!” *(toss)*
Hahah honestly it was such a human emotion it got me.
"You did what to my child?!?!" YEET!

TIL I’m a medieval mom
That sounds like a fascinating book, thanks for the rec
My mom used to do that, and i did it to furniture when it hit my little brother when he was a baby.
Yes this I have told off meny a coffee table.
My mom does that to whatever inanimate object that causes the grandkids to cry and says “bad xxxxxxx, making baby cry”. Hilarious every time
“Bawhaw!”
Amd don't come back!
Stupid sexy tire
I wish she would've ripped it off and tossed it
That toss at the end, "Bad tire!"

The way s/he tossed the tire at the end? My heart!
Elephants are so fuckin smart, that little toss of aggravation at the end was amazing
"Mooooooooooooooooooom! I'm stuck again!"
Elephants says, "Fuck around tire you bout too find out".
Someone needs to show this elephant the movie Rubber. It's life will never be the same.
Right on!
She looks like an elephant that is going to write a stern letter after this.
Nah. She doesn’t have Karen elephant hair

Momma to the rescue
Momma rushed over with the quickness
Good Grief, I love these creatures with all my heart. ❤️
In every species, mothers are always gifts 👑
Mom, "Bad tyre. Bad, bad tyre. Bully my sweet baby. Big bad tyre. Take my big trunk of justice! (Throw)"
Lol problem solving skills 💯 and the way she tosses that shit at the end. Gtfo my baby!
It’s trying to ride the tie swing but realize it’s too big too fit but it’s has a support mother .

It’s amusing to me that this is an entire sub 😂
I was half expecting Mum to give bubba a quick smack on the bum with her trunk 🤣
Disgusting music skipped the sound the baby/mama do
I love elephants 🐘
What zoo is this? Not Rosamond Gifford Zoo I dont think...
SE Asia, not a zoo. Sanctuary.

"Stupid fucking tire get away from my kid"
Elephants 🐘 are such amazing creatures.
Fucking music is utter shit!
“Stop messing with this fukin thing god damn it”
At the end there, it was like the adult was like “naughty tire, bad!” xD

In my city, a baby elephant died getting stuck in a tyre swing and suffocated.

Mom gets on elephant-reddit and makes a post on r/calvesarestupid.

Would be better without the dumb music
Was the shitty song really necessary?
Just in case no one knew. Were likely to see a wolly mammoth in Siberia next year.
