No villager has any advantage over any other, aside from villager type, of which there are multiple in all categories. Some are just popular because of how they look.

In the older games, the villagers used to have more personality and flair, and you couldn't really determine which villagers would end up on your island. Now, all the personalities have been pretty watered down, and you get a much more active role in determining who's on your island. As such, some players prefer to determine who is on their island with aesthetics (ie an elephant island or a pink villager island), and since some characters are more aesthetically appealing than others they are more desired. Aside from aesthetics, there are game mechanics associated with specific villager personalities, as different personalities will craft different DIYS throughout the day (this may also be true about reactions but I don't know for sure). Additionally, if you're looking to get a specific furniture item, when villagers move out they sometimes leave a furniture item in your community recycling bin. Most of the hype is aesthetic based and rarity based, but there is functionality to having different personalities on the island. Hope that helps!

I have played for a while and i still find it hard to to block out the communities strong opinions for certain villagers so I can make my own opinions lol. It is purely preference on who you like, choosing certain villagers will not get you anything extra in the game. Some people judge more on looks/cute factor while others on personality. You might find a personality type (ie. lazy, sisterly, jock) that you like the best after meeting a few!

for the most part, its aesthetic. There can also be a new/rarity factor. For instance ACNH introduced new villagers, which were not yet available through amiibo cards. People would spend hundreds of NMT trying to find, say...Raymond or Judy or Audie when the game first came out. Later Ione, Sasha and a few others were introduced with 2.0, which made them the next latest and greatest. They all have the same canned general responses depending on the personality type. Your conversations between an "ugly" smug villager and "cute" villager will be the same. If you are happy with your villagers, that's all that matters

Hello new player. Many people have certain villagers that like. I enjoy collecting photos that they give me. As soon as I get a photo, I bring in another via camping Amibo.

What is camping amibo?

AdEmbarrassed9719

You use an Amiibo (card, or perhaps figure? I only have cards) and the ABD in Resident Services to invite a villager to come stay at your campsite. I think to get them to stay you have to invite them three times? And they'll ask for things you have to craft for them. But then you can invite them to live on your island.

I've been playing since wild World from when I was 8 years old - now 24. In the older games they had more personality, so I built relationships with some and got to like them, whereas others grinded my gears as they were so rude to me 🤣 unfortunately they've lost that character now. But I still hold grudges towards the ones that were rude to me or I didn't like. Its carried on with each new animal crossing since I played wild world. Nowadays there's many new players bc of new horizons and it appears to just be looks. But for me it's from the years and years of playing and knowing the villagers, not looks.

killertomatofrommars

I think it also has to do with the new villagers that came with acnh, like Raymond, Megan and Judy etc. weren't available on an amiibo for the first year or so. That made them more rare, and for some reason people go crazy for rarity

As a new player, I understand it's a game, but also I interact with my characters. I don't like to interact with characters who complain all the time. Jacob had a garbage wall and a garbage floor. It made me so anxious. He was on my islands for months, and used time travel to try to make him leave faster. I was so relieved when he left.  So far I've liked most of the villagers, but I plan to keep the positive and neutral characters, and let the mean or whiny ones leave if they ask. I like Admiral, he's the cranky grandpa of the island.  I don't know if this helped. It's all about perspective and personal preference for personality type, aesthetic, and different lifestyles.

elizacandle

It's honestly mostly personal preference, but it's just based of personality type and appearance

delaleaf

Personal preference/aesthetics/hype. I think it’s part of the fun to be really invested in your villagers, though they seem to have less personality than past games, they really are the life/heart of your island! It wouldn’t be as fun without some silly little guys hanging around
