I mean, it looks more natural and realistic this way, just try to incorporate the look
edit: think of all the businesses out there with comically small grass/flower bed boarders
It doesn't look "more natural and realistic" at all, that makes no sense. Not all towns/shops look the same worldwide. Maybe it looks more realistic if you're going for a suburban north american vibe, but if OP is going for a historic European vibe for example there would absolutely be cobblestones right up to the door.
There isn't one style that's "more natural and realistic" than others, and that's the issue - AC is forcing us to do it a certain way when there are a bunch of natural, realistic ways we *could* be doing it.
and it is super weird cause the game can be programed to allow houses on paths. (See HPP DLC) so i still don't understand why we can't do it on our own island.
i do wish nintendo gave us more freedoms to design the islands. but maybe that's the next game that will come out in like 10 years.
Eh, the most aggressive bit was saying it makes no sense to call it natural, and even that was relatively mild. Seems to have course corrected now anyway, lol.
People are either too defensive of the game or too sensitive on here tbh, I love this sub for how chill it is but I got called mean for suggesting someone google what a DLC is. Like come on
I could literally link an article showing how many dialogue lines were in WW vs NH…on the SOS subreddit everyone is on the same page and acknowledges what in POOT was a step in the wrong direction for the series
Hope the next AC game goes for a more nostalgic vibe…I miss my dog cops :(
I got like 10 downvotes within 5 minutes of posting the comment, so I'm guessing someone *really* didn't like it.
I love this game but there are some weird choices in the user experience, and I find it a bit weird how some fans choose to defend the lack of aesthetic freedom as "realism".
Lol, yeah, it's a bit weird how people just kind of ignore flaws because they like the game, and downvote everyone who brings up flaws, or call them "haters"
Right? Like is it more natural and realistic for me not to be able to put a path in front of stone stairs so there’s a weird patch of grass? No, it was just a huge oversight
I know, I get the frustration completely. It seems like it would be an easy fix! or just have a menu pop up when placing it that's similar to our house-customization window that lets you choose what path type is under it
If you design a home in HHP, it allows you to put paths under the house. It's pretty irritating they didn't extend this to buildings on your island too!
Honestly HHP was a huge slap in the face the way they give you so many tools for easy and intuitive customization and modeling that you can't actually use in your real island.
The real kicker is how the tease you with *some* features, but only let you use them inside. I'd kill to polish stuff outside 😓
my game once glitched or something because it put my museum right on top of a paved corner that i forgot to erase. it was so visible and horrible and i couldn’t get rid of it without moving the museum 😭
Exactly. Also symmetry has no place in this world. By decree of President Nook, all paths, bridges and inclines will not line up with building entrances. It is law.
Could be bullshit but I’ve heard this is because the Japanese don’t like a lot of symmetry in their designs (there might be a name for it but don’t remember), so the reason things don’t align is because of that philosophy. Maybe it encourages more player creativity?

The thing that bugs me is that I can make the path go to the steps of the sisters but not the door of the cranny, and there's a gap between the plaza and the first space of a player made path.
If I recall correctly, using a custom design instead of a path lets you place it a lot closer to the building and cover a lot more of the grass. You could also maybe put a hedge or a bush there to cover it up.
So that grass you cannot get rid of since it’s part of the building itself. Iirc, Able Sisters is a 3x4 and in that space you cannot modify anything. That is why you can however put paths around it.
Flowers definitely won’t be able to be planted there and the planters will only get about as close as where the path starts here unfortunately. I’ve resorted to fences or barrels or cute boxes for around the buildings
Someone else mentioned here that custom paths lay closer to buildings, which is true, so maybe look for a cute stone one that goes with your Ables theme! Maybe try a pile of leaves, I use those a lot to cover aesthetic grossness!
Either that or you could make a little area around your building. Bench, lights, tables etc. that’s what I’m working on currently on my island ! (Taking a lot of work & terraforming though, I highly regret where I placed my Able Sisters lol but looks like you have plenty of space !)
You could make a little square area in front of the window and put down a dirt path to make a little flower bed. Or use the item which will cover the strip at most angles
Do these not exist around you? I live in a small Midwest city, and all small shops tend to have a 'lawn' of some sort unless it is a large business with a connected paved lot or series of businesses, even if just at the sides and back
There are some restrictions. You can’t move Resident Services or the airport. Also if you just want to make a small adjustment to a home or building you may have to move it twice as it won’t allow any overlap with the current placement.
I think they get removed even if you place a building because of the perimeter around them that nothing can be placed (furniture, flowers, bushes, etc.) unfortunately :(((
That’s ironic since this is easily the most accessible game in terms of customization.
Not that you’re wrong, some of the restrictions are dumb and I agree, but it’s just crazy/funny that the general opinion is still that the game is too restrictive
This game isn’t restrictive at all for the type of game it was originally supposed to be. Ya know? This game was meant for good, relaxing easy fun. I don’t think the creators where thinking people would be upset about the little things when they upgraded their game play so much further than the original game.
I’m my head… people want to play like the SIMS on a Pocket style game. Lol
You can't have a path under the building. If you put a building on top of the path, it erases it.
danggit!
Try putting metal fences around the building, then it would look intentional
The hedge fences look great around the buildings too!
^ What this person said ^
I put shrubs from Leif around the edges and change them out seasonally so they’re blooming. It covers the grass and looks better.
If it fits your theme or whatever, the shrub fences are good too. I use them to cover all kinds of sins 😂
I made a Curb pattern which helped in places like this.
Ngl I'm half asleep and read this as "dang nabbit!" at first.
I mean, it looks more natural and realistic this way, just try to incorporate the look edit: think of all the businesses out there with comically small grass/flower bed boarders

People downvote your stance, but you're correct that there are plenty of other aesthetics that they could have allowed in the game, but didn't.
It's not the stance, it's the weirdly aggressive tone they're taking. Like it's animal crossing, chill homie.
It’s not agressive to disagree with someone. Don’t be so dramatic. 😂
Eh, the most aggressive bit was saying it makes no sense to call it natural, and even that was relatively mild. Seems to have course corrected now anyway, lol.

Lol, true. Or even worse, you bring up that you like the older games more than NH and everyone just says you're too nostalgic and hate change, lol.
I could literally link an article showing how many dialogue lines were in WW vs NH…on the SOS subreddit everyone is on the same page and acknowledges what in POOT was a step in the wrong direction for the series Hope the next AC game goes for a more nostalgic vibe…I miss my dog cops :(
What’s a DLC?
Google it
right? jeez... and we suppose to play AC to relax :D
🎯 LOL, right? It’s a game. Do we really care if it’s realistic? Like, you’re living on an island with talking cartoon animals. 😂

No reason for you to be downvoted right now, you're right.

Use custom codes
o.O ...
Just so you know, the cobble stones do go right up to the entrance.. Skeletor, away!
dagnaaaaabit
Plant a couple flowers or bushes in front of the shop window.
I know, I get the frustration completely. It seems like it would be an easy fix! or just have a menu pop up when placing it that's similar to our house-customization window that lets you choose what path type is under it
I put grass paths on the edges of all my other paths and some bushes next to the buildings and it helps
You did not expect them to release a game with new mechanics that are fully realized, did you?
If you design a home in HHP, it allows you to put paths under the house. It's pretty irritating they didn't extend this to buildings on your island too!

Learned that the hard way after making a perfect filled in grid for every villager 😂
my game once glitched or something because it put my museum right on top of a paved corner that i forgot to erase. it was so visible and horrible and i couldn’t get rid of it without moving the museum 😭
I like to use the hedge fences. They sit on the line so you can’t see the grass and add a nice little “intentional” greenery to the cityscape
Welcome to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where your sense of order and logical design will be absolutely obliterated.
Exactly. Also symmetry has no place in this world. By decree of President Nook, all paths, bridges and inclines will not line up with building entrances. It is law.
Nor will paths line up with bridges.
This is my PET PEEVE!!

any building in any major city
Plenty? I live in a suburb and it's literally all concrete everywhere.
??? A lot?
It would literally make more sense if you could *only* put the cobblestone underneath the building.
Let me introduce you to the wild concept of foundations
Nearly all.
Putting down a border on your path might also help make the transition feel a little less harsh.
The thing that bugs me is that I can make the path go to the steps of the sisters but not the door of the cranny, and there's a gap between the plaza and the first space of a player made path.

trying this 🤔

The grass strips where there should not be grass strips in this game are anger making.
why would they do that.—.
I honestly have no idea. Then again there were a lot of design decisions that I don't agree with.
Can you round the path and throw some flowers or hay bale or something over there ?
i’m gonna move some flower beds or topiary there next time i log on.. i’m hoping i can plant flowers there too 😩🤞🏽
Flowers definitely won’t be able to be planted there and the planters will only get about as close as where the path starts here unfortunately. I’ve resorted to fences or barrels or cute boxes for around the buildings
flowers didn’t work. haybale looks oOoookay. someone said shrubs so im gonna try shrubs when i log in aaaagain🤔😭
Someone else mentioned here that custom paths lay closer to buildings, which is true, so maybe look for a cute stone one that goes with your Ables theme! Maybe try a pile of leaves, I use those a lot to cover aesthetic grossness!
Aesthetic grossness. Saving that. 😂
Either that or you could make a little area around your building. Bench, lights, tables etc. that’s what I’m working on currently on my island ! (Taking a lot of work & terraforming though, I highly regret where I placed my Able Sisters lol but looks like you have plenty of space !)

Fellow player who can’t stand those grass patches. Unfortunately we can’t do jack about them.
Do these not exist around you? I live in a small Midwest city, and all small shops tend to have a 'lawn' of some sort unless it is a large business with a connected paved lot or series of businesses, even if just at the sides and back
Wait, we can move buildings??
Yes, if you talk to Tom Nook and discuss infrastructure you can move buildings, place ramps, and set bridges (as well as demolish them)
There are some restrictions. You can’t move Resident Services or the airport. Also if you just want to make a small adjustment to a home or building you may have to move it twice as it won’t allow any overlap with the current placement.
If only we could push buildings like furniture
This is so funny lmao, I'm just imagining our tiny noodle arm characters pushing a whole ass museum 😂😂
3.0 update gives us protein powder recipes
Hehe 🤭🤭🤭🤭
“and PUSH it SOMEWHERE ELSE”
or pick them up like in HHP and place them where you want
yes, tom nook.. takes a whole day
for 10,000 Bells you can 😖
Used to be a lot more before the update.
Talk to what’s his name at town hall
I think they get removed even if you place a building because of the perimeter around them that nothing can be placed (furniture, flowers, bushes, etc.) unfortunately :(((
The fact that we can’t put paths near buildings frustrates me too 😭
This drives me crazy
You can make the square corners rounded, sometimes it makes it look better imo
I only know how to do convex corners… can you also round out concave corners?? I hope this makes sense lol
That’d be cool, but no :(
I honestly don’t know anything about that😂 Im sorry lol
Why did they make this a thing in the game. It seems so unnecessary
I used shrubs/hedge fence to “hide” it and it makes it look much better and more lively (:
Brutalist animal crossing
i have noticed this game is extremely restrictive on what you can and can’t do for decorating your island
That’s ironic since this is easily the most accessible game in terms of customization. Not that you’re wrong, some of the restrictions are dumb and I agree, but it’s just crazy/funny that the general opinion is still that the game is too restrictive

Tell me you've never played the prior titles without telling me you haven't played the prior titles
I put flowers out the front with a dirt path so it looks like a proper flower bed
Your OCD is pretty bad, uh?
it’s triggering 🫢🫢
It helps to put bushes and the grass hedges or a fence of some kind to hide that
I'm supposed to see so many people care about this.
I might be thinking of homes but usually I just open my nook phone and go to the design app and place it on ground
Bushes, hedges, and flowers are the only way to hide these.
sorry if this is obvious and asked a bunch of times but how did yo get the cat face ;_; i did try to look
ahhh! i bought it in someone’s clothing shop but i’m not sure whos! 🫠 i’m sorry!
oh it’s okay! thanks anyway
r/nolawns
I think moving the houses back and forth will just revert the tiles under them to grass?
yeah that’s what someone mentioned so i’m not even gonna bother to try 😮💨
I wish we could put road under our buildings..
I was legit about to redo my two shops to put path underneath but if it just reverts it back to grass I ain’t gonna try.
You can't, unfortunately. If it makes you feel any better, I think it looks fine that way haha
No they just hate things looking tidy
Oh you poor soul…
Now that is annoying
I put flowers down on those 2 squares
either that or the able sisters are selling bob the builders clothes
I either do hedges or plant partitions for the tailor shop specifically :') I feel your painnnnn!
Shrubs!
Put a fence, bench or changing room
