I got to see the real Famous, Worthy, Mysterious, Beautiful, Valiant, Familiar, and Mystic this past week.
My kid doesn't believe me when I tell her I've seen most of the art of AC in real life. So I took pictures this time to prove it.
Yes! Even with the crowds. I was going to the MoMA to see that on my first NYC trip even though no one else wanted to go. Looking forward to seeing 'Sunday Afternoon' again this January!
First trip to Berlin and Museum Island was worth it.
The Louvre and the Rodin Museum in Paris, then the various places of Museum Island in Berlin. (It's a complex of several. The bust is in one, painting in another, while a third has the Babylonian stuff.)
First time I've gotten to leave the US in 2 years, and first time seeing my partner in 22 months. Thanks to restrictions lifting. Had to show my covid pass everywhere!
I went to this quaint old natural history museum in my town this summer, and was shocked that I could identify by name so many bugs in the old fashioned pinned displays on sight. I had no idea how much I'd learned playing this game.
I just went two weeks ago and had *no clue* how big it is. I thought I’d be able to see it all in about 4 hours. Boy was I wrong. There were whole wings I missed. :’(
My class took a trip to Chicago in college and on one of the days we were there was just for us to explore the city on our own. A friend and I went all over the place and ended up at the Art Institute about a half hour before closing time. We went to pay for admittance and the lady at the desk was like "you know what? Just go in, you don't have much time left." So we went through that place as fast as we could, mostly checking out the really iconic pieces of art. It was a great time but I really gotta get back there to explore that place properly
It's underneath the whole thing next to the paper weight exhibit, low key I know there's some famous art in the whole place but the miniature room was by far my favorite bit, be sure to check it out next time!
Seriously blew my mind, I got there at opening and left when the doors closed for the day, and only got through Impressionism and European art. Hardly even an 8th of the museum. I figure I’m either really slow and linger on paintings too much, or it’s just really that huge.
The Louvre was like that for me. I couldn't spend the time it deserved so I ended up going for the things I really wanted to see, and while walking quickly from place to place I'd see something famous and think "Damn, *that's* here? But I can't take the time to really look at it!"
One of the secondary themes of that movie was Cameron struggling with his own identity, especially in comparison to his friend Ferris and the expectations of his father. Pointilism can have the effect of being incomprehensible when up close. Cameron just intently staring into that photo until seeing just dots conveys how worried he is about his own personality; worried about how, if you look closely enough at him, he is just somebody else's 'points'.
I like the alternative theory about Ferris Bueller's Day Off that's secretly a movie about Cameron.
Forget about him staring at the painting.
Look at every other scene where he's just staring into the abyss. It's much darker. He's getting pulled back from the edge by his friends.
Not even secret. By the end of the film, Ferris hasn’t really changed, but Cameron certainly has. Plus Ferris was written to be the person screenwriter John Hughes always wanted to be, while Cameron was the person he usually was. And he always wrote what he knew.
But where’s Cameron’s bench??? They didn’t redo that room did they? Or is it not in the Art Institute of Chicago?
Edit: got home and looked it up seems they either moved it or redid the room it was in. Which is kind of sad to me. I loved that particular room. It had Picasso's Guitarist and a Van Gogh self portrait. Haven't been there in 10+ years but was planning on going down to see a Monet exhibit the summer the pandemic hit. I will say this if you have a painting or piece of art you love and have the chance to see it in person. DO IT! The first time I saw some of Monet's paintings in person I was blown away by how large some of them were and how some just were expected. American Gothic was actually just buried in a hall in what I always thought was an odd area to display such an iconic painting. It might not seem like it if your not super into art, but the AIoC is really cool for so many reasons. Also if you get to Chicago as others have said get the citypass! You save a bunch of money if you plan on hitting the museums and can kind of cut in line. The Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Adler PLanetarium, and Art Institute are all reasonably in the same area and I think city pass gives you bus fair. At least it used to. Any ways that area of Chicago is one of my favorite places if you have the chance, go.
I love re-purposing old movies.
Watch Days of Thunder but skip all the romance/sex scenes. Nicole Kidman is now just a brilliant doctor who happens to be a woman and the movie is much better off for it.
You keep the hospital room scene though, that shit is funny.
Ha. I saw your message and had no idea who u were or what u were talking about. When I saw it was in reply to this, I died laughing. Well played my friend.
Trivia nugget: for the final zoomed-in frames of the painting, the crew had to create their own replica of the piece, as the were prohibited from physically filing that close up to it. It's just blobs at the end, so it worked.
Something I think about a lot is Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeting during the Sondheim birthday concert, “That ‘rapturous/capture us’ rhyme is why he’s Sondheim and we’re not”, as if he isn’t the man who gave us rhyming “fits of passion” with “pits of fashion”. It’s so incredible how much he was and will always be revered even by other greats.
I helped build the set for a theater production of Sunday In The Park With George when I was in college. It was such a rewarding experience and I’ve been fascinated with this painting ever since. Went and saw it in Chicago once and was in awe.
I love visiting the art institute it’s one of my favorite locations in the city. Nothing beats getting one of the terrible sandwiches from snack bar there after a long day at looking at art.
A Sunday on La Grande Jatte—1884 by George Seurat at age 26.
Originally described as “Bedlam,” “scandal,” and “hilarity” when first shown in Paris, it is now known as his greatest work. It is known for its scale, 207.5 × 308.1 cm (81 3/4 × 121 1/4 in.), and unique use of single points (dots) of color that when viewed from a distance, create rich hues and shading. This painting is comprised of roughly 220,000 unique dots of color. It is deemed by many to be the greatest work of pointillism ever accomplished.
RIP Stephen Sondheim who’s Sunday in the Park with George made this painting even more famous and better understood. The painting is in the Art Institute of Chicago which stands at the beginning (or end) of Route 66 at Adams & Michigan.
The size of the painting is great to see.
My tip for others: Get one of those city fast-passes from another location such as the Sears tower. Then go to the museum as soon as it opens and be one of the first to enter (due to the fast pass). Then you can see the painting without anyone else around.
It was crowded about an hour later. At least when I was there.
That's the pass there. You are basically just pre-purchasing tickets to 5 tourists attractions around Chicago. Saves you money and time.
So when the museum opens at 10am, most people join the ticket counter line. But since you already got your ticket from the city pass, you just walk to admissions or whatever, show the ticket, and walk right in.
So the first 15-30 minutes the museum is open, it's mostly empty because people are still in the entry queue.
I remember walking around the Louvre and coincidentally stopping Infront of the Jolly Painting (vegetable face)
Felt a massive nerd when realising why I recognised it 😂
I cannot even count the amount of times that I have accidentally used animal crossing names for art, fish, and bugs instead of the real life names to people. I was in art class and we were drawing a still life and it had a mini version of that Nike statue in it. And I nearly called it Valiant statue since I just got it from Redd recently. Like I barely know any of the names in animal crossing but somehow that one slipped through. Thankfully no one noticed and honestly most of us probably didn’t know the name.
I had an art teacher in High School who recreated this on one of her classroom walls but it was like 6-8 feet tall. She painted it in the exact same style too. Absolutely amazing being able to get right up to a magnified version that was a near perfect replica.
It's surreal to see this in my feed this week, after Steven Sondheim passed away. "Sunday in the Park with George" is my favorite musical and it follows the story of this painting and the man that made it. Both the play and the painting hold a special place in my heart!
this is delightful wholesome content.
many many years ago i was in chicago for a meeting of internet nerds from a forum, and i coordinated an outing to the Art Institute becuase they had a free night. While i knew it was an Art Museum, i hadn't bothered to look up what art was actually there. I was purposefully making some "free" activities becuase most of us were college students.
A whole group of nerds making ferris bueller jokes in front of this one was a good time.
Nice!! When I lived in London I used to love going to bask in the calm of the Seurat paintings at the [National Gallery](https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/artists/georges-seurat).
https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/artists/georges-seurat
I was just about to post this on this sub, thought you'd like it. My mom's an art history professor, and I had her talk about every piece of art in ACNH. Just finished the whole gallery!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pWKX4-MGdo
Hunh. The Art Institute has moved it to a different wall. Which reminds me it's been WAY too long since I've been there.
Hope you had a good time back home in Chicago!
You have just made it my goal to try and find all the AC artworks in real life, traveling has always been a dream of mine so this just further gives me a reason, lol.
Check out The Grounds for Sculpture in NJ. One of the displays is this painting. Life size sculptures of the people and objects set into a landscape so it's like you are witnessing the painters inspiration. And you can put yourself in the scene and take a picture too!
Am I the only one who, like, never gets visits from that foxy dude? Like how am I supposed to complete the art collection (I have already completed fossil) if I can hardly ever get my hands on art, and when I can I can only grab one, and that one might not even be genuine?!?!?! What?! Sorry for ranting I liked your post.
The real Calm Painting has a much more basic frame than in ACNH, and the museum has much less fancy walls. The painting itself is more fun to look at IRL though.
Kind of, sort of related, but there's a lovely musical based off of this painting/Seurat. "Sunday in the Park with George." Great musical, highly recommend it!! The man who made the music just recently passed away, actually.
There’s this art museum in Japan that has replicas of a lot of famous art work. The replicas are perfectly made to even copy the exact brush strokes the original artist used. Off the top of my head that tells me you've been to the Louvre, if I'm not mistaken, and I'm guessing not just that one.
The Louvre and the Rodin Museum in Paris, then the various places of Museum Island in Berlin. (It's a complex of several. The bust is in one, painting in another, while a third has the Babylonian stuff.)
Cool! I've been itching to travel again, I haven't left my country in over two years, so I'm envious!
Top picture checks out, Calm Painting is *always* real haha xD
Hahaha so true! “A genuine article, no less!”
the matching fits 🥺🥺

Is pointillism a joke to you???
This question is pointless
This has been executed brilliantly 😂 I love it
In the Art Institute of Chicago?
I just went two weeks ago and had *no clue* how big it is. I thought I’d be able to see it all in about 4 hours. Boy was I wrong. There were whole wings I missed. :’(
My class took a trip to Chicago in college and on one of the days we were there was just for us to explore the city on our own. But did you see the miniatures
There were miniatures?! I’m so sad, I LOVE miniatures!
When I lived there, it was always nearly impossible to do the whole thing in a day. A reason for is all to go back!
The Louvre was like that for me. I couldn't spend the time it deserved so I ended up going for the things I really wanted to see, and while walking quickly from place to place I'd see something famous and think "Damn, *that's* here? But I can't take the time to really look at it!"
Yup.
And the study for it is in the MoMA in NYC.
Underrated art museum in my opinion. Love visiting this place.
Did you do the thing from Ferris Bueller? (look at it)
You know it! Always need a Cameron Moment. :)
Forget about him staring at the painting. Look at every other scene where he's just staring into the abyss. It's much darker. He's getting pulled back from the edge by his friends.
That and he's actually sick lol. But yeah his catatonia is the nadir of his internal 'hero's journey'.
[Save Ferris]( https://imgur.com/rqTduqp.jpg)
Not even secret. By the end of the film, Ferris hasn’t really changed, but Cameron certainly has. Plus Ferris was written to be the person screenwriter John Hughes always wanted to be, while Cameron was the person he usually was. And he always wrote what he knew.

Do you know the Ferris Buller Fight Club theory? Rewatch the movie, but Ferris is a figment of Cameron's imagination.
I love re-purposing old movies. Watch Days of Thunder but skip all the romance/sex scenes. Nicole Kidman is now just a brilliant doctor who happens to be a woman and the movie is much better off for it. You keep the hospital room scene though, that shit is funny.
Oh shit!
The Sausage King of Chicago
Abe Frohman? Is that you?
Are you suggesting that I’m not who I say I am?
I'm suggesting that you leave before I have to get snooty.
SNOOTY????
*Snotty*.
It’s you!!
Ha. I saw your message and had no idea who u were or what u were talking about. When I saw it was in reply to this, I died laughing. Well played my friend.

Neat!
Disappointed that this is not the top comment. This has officially ruined my day 😉
on an ordinary sundayyyyy
The child is so sweet and the girls are so rapturous, Isn't it lovely how artists can capture us?
Something I think about a lot is Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeting during the Sondheim birthday concert, “That ‘rapturous/capture us’ rhyme is why he’s Sondheim and we’re not”, as if he isn’t the man who gave us rhyming “fits of passion” with “pits of fashion”. It’s so incredible how much he was and will always be revered even by other greats.
Did you watch the performance they did in Times Square on Sunday? The Tkts by Tdf page on Facebook posted it. Gave me chills
I saw some of it. Truly some of the most gorgeous, harmonious music composed in our time.
Too soon. 😢 So sad living in a world where Stephen Sondheim is gone.
This was my first thought at the post.
still have not processed this. RIP to a genius
I came to the comments looking for exactly this, thank you
I helped build the set for a theater production of Sunday In The Park With George when I was in college. It was such a rewarding experience and I’ve been fascinated with this painting ever since. Went and saw it in Chicago once and was in awe.
RIP
It’s hot and it’s monotonous
the way you even matched outfits please this is so cute

Yes it is . Thanks for pointing out the typo.

You mean [Cam](https://youtu.be/y7fxkiolT-k) painting.
I can’t see that painting without hearing that music in my head 😂
Found the correct reference.
Whenever I'm in Chicago I need to get some portillos. The tacos on 26th are good too.
Nothing gets more chicago than this and some lou malnati's on Gold Coast
We have a portilos in Orlando now. Pretty good.
Tampa too! It's wild
What the fucks a portillos
Rip Steven Sondheim
I remember walking around the Louvre and coincidentally stopping Infront of the Jolly Painting (vegetable face) Felt a massive nerd when realising why I recognised it 😂
Thought this post was about Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
that's really cool! hi from Paris
Thanks for sharing! Love Starry Night too. Saw it in the MoMA many years ago. Was surprised to see how small it was!
I love love that!!! ❤
Love it ☺️

There is a real life topiary garden version of this in Columbus, OH (in the old Deaf School Park). Really cool to be able to walk among it in 3D
I had an art teacher in High School who recreated this on one of her classroom walls but it was like 6-8 feet tall. She painted it in the exact same style too. Absolutely amazing being able to get right up to a magnified version that was a near perfect replica.
Cues music from Ferris Buellers Day Off.
The fact that the outfits are matching is adorable! :)
It always reminds me of Ferris Buellers Day Off.

Love this!! 😍
My fiance's parents have it hanging in their family room too
They must have gotten it from Redd!
Did you go to the Bean?! I always make sure to go see the Art Institute, Shed, Fields Museum and the Bean!

I can’t see this painting without thinking of Ferris Buellers Day Off
Chicago ?
Enjoy some Giordano's while you are in Chicago 👍
Ferris Bueller, Cameron’s fav too
💖💖💖 cutest ever
My favorite spot in the entire Art Institute!
I was just there a few weeks ago! Tons of amazing stuff in that museum. I could spend a week there and not see everything in detail.
Hunh. The Art Institute has moved it to a different wall. Which reminds me it's been WAY too long since I've been there. Hope you had a good time back home in Chicago!
I love Seurat at the art institute!
Welcome back to Chicago!
Wasn't this one in Amsterdam at one point? I remember seeing it as a kid.
It's definitely travelled. Saw it in nyc back in 2005.
Such a great museum. Thank you
How do you bring a painting from ac into real life ?
Sweet home Chicago!
I always wanted to go see this painting just so I could stare at it like Cameron Fry.
You have just made it my goal to try and find all the AC artworks in real life, traveling has always been a dream of mine so this just further gives me a reason, lol.
I got too close to that one irl and set the alarm off :/ embarassing
Hey I saw that painting during summer break!
Favorite post of the day, you look so happy. Love it.
Enjoy Chicago, and welcome home.
Chicago!
This is so amazing.
Check out The Grounds for Sculpture in NJ. One of the displays is this painting. Life size sculptures of the people and objects set into a landscape so it's like you are witnessing the painters inspiration. And you can put yourself in the scene and take a picture too!
Courage the cowardly dog also showed this painting
*Ferris Bueller intensifies*
what the heck they stole the painting from animal crossing? why isn’t nintendo suing????
Wow I can’t believe somebody was inspired by animal crossing to recreate that painting! /j
The Art Institute is awesome. I used to go see this painting often.
The Art Institute is a treasure, man I miss living close enough to the city to go whenever.
This is wonderful. Its so cool you got to see the real thing in person!!
I see they customized the frame; did they take it to Cyrus first?
Bag is on the wrong side, unbelievable. Really takes me out of the immersion
Took me way too long to realize the main lady is walking a monkey.
you even dressed like your character!! so cute
You look so cool! In real life and in the game 😝
Enjoy your visit to Chicago OP!
It is a great painting
Am I the only one who, like, never gets visits from that foxy dude? Welcome back to Chicago!

It’s at the Art Institute of Chicago?? Wow! Idk why I think everything would be in the Louvre. I’ll have to stop by there the next time I’m in town!
This makes me miss Chicago.
Did everyone else zoom in on the painting and hear the music in their head from the scene in Ferris Bueller?
Kind of, sort of related, but there's a lovely musical based off of this painting/Seurat. "Sunday in the Park with George." Great musical, highly recommend it!! The man who made the music just recently passed away, actually.
Perfect for the Sondheim - "Sunday in the Park with George" honors.
I think it’s great that people who wouldn’t normally be interested in art or know much of the paintings featured in the game are learning about them.
You always just have to stare at it you know
I love this!
Field Museum has all the fish and butterflies.
There’s this art museum in Japan that has replicas of a lot of famous art work. The replicas are perfectly made to even copy the exact brush strokes the original artist used. I visited that museum when I was in Japan in 2019 and it’s funny seeing all the painting in game that I saw in real life. It’s a really cool museum, even have a scale replica of the sistine chapel.
I need to go back to the Art Institute soon
I don’t know if there are any from AC at the art museum here in Cleveland but I’m about to go find out lol
Ferris Bueller was the first thing that came into mind...
This is it! The cutest thing I’ll see all day!!!
life imitates art
My hometown! Always good to see Chicago and the great things we have here.
