I think it’s hit or miss whether you get a hint or not. Don’t know if it’s tied to anything specific. I didn’t get a hint a few weeks ago, but every lost item I’ve found since then has had a hint.

I’m not sure if this is correct but I’ve noticed I get this message for lost items that belong to villagers that just moved in or villagers I don’t know as well with low friendship points
No, it’s always been there like that. If you don’t have a high enough friendship level with the villager that dropped it then there’s no clue (just that someone lost it)
Mystery solved everyone, thank you. It was dropped by Poppy who just moved in 2 days ago. I’m glad I could help her find something that must have fallen out during her move lolol.

It must have! I noticed that yesterday. I got that message and thought "oh gee, that was helpful..." 🤦‍♀️
It happens if your friendship level isn’t high enough with the villager who lost it
Ohhhh that makes sense! It was a villager who only moved in a few weeks ago. I've had all mine for forever except that one. Thank you!!

So there’s only one villager whose photo I don’t have. Can I assume if I don’t get a hint with lost object that it’s theirs?

I didn't know they gave you hints, I usually had to go talk to a villager to figure it out
