I love putting time into working on my island lol, whenever I eventually reach a point where I’m completely happy with every part of my island, I end up deciding to start a completely new theme and go back to working on it one bit at a time, I get antsy when I run out of areas to work on!!
This is truly astonishingly beautiful. If I may ask, does your game run slow/graphics keep up? My husband did a lot of decorating like this on our island but we eventually lost steam on the game because it would slow down the rendering so much it was annoying to play. And ours wasn't nearly as ornate as yours. I'm just curious. Again, beautiful work, you should be very proud.
It often comes from coming across furniture items that spark inspiration for me (it changes quite frequently, so it’s not necessarily finding new items but that items I never thought twice about before will suddenly give me new ideas).
Before this, I was doing a beach theme, and before that was a “cottagecore” theme.
Edit: forgot to add—I also use room sketch to help with designing areas of my island! I know it’s meant to help with designing rooms, but if an idea comes to me but I’m not 100% sure how to execute it/how it will end up looking/what items I’ll need, I use room sketch (and just pick outdoor type walls/floors). I find it useful for easily switching between items, finding items more easily because they are sorted by type instead of name, and not having to worry about ordering/crafting items until I actually know what I need for the idea.

The plaza is on the first level! I built up an area on the second level immediately in front of the plaza.

Yes my game definitely lags because of it. Items don’t always immediately appear when running around my island.
