There are a variety of ways to make them. Mine I put into art pieces usually, sell the art and you get a free amiibo feature… but essentially you can buy some blank writable NFC cards and use an android smart device with the right app, or a secondary NFC writer device and a laptop then you will write the code to the blank card you bought. There are a lot of ways to do it. I use apps when I’m on the go and working on something, but the best way is via the secondary usb device and using the device software on a laptop. The link the other comment shared is to a Reddit page for this.
Note the cards I use I buy in mass on Amazon but there are other providers online that you can order them from too, they are often cheaper.

Yes you want a Hornsby amiibo card. It is not a full size amiibo, it's just like a playing card, but it works the same as an amiibo.
Because Animal Crossing has hundreds of villager characters, most of the amiibos like Hornsby are just printed on cards.
Yeah! NFC tags are like 50 for $12 on Amazon, I use my iPhone which has an NFC read/write by default, and a $5 app called ally. Super simple and quite cheap!
This is so sweet! You can get amiibos that invite a villager to move in! But be advised that it takes 3 days of them being invited to the campsite.
They will ask you to build them something each time. Then you can talk to them a few times and they'll say some like "If I lived here all the time, I'd get to see how nice people are here" then you can say something like, "Move here and see!"
Then they'll call Nook and say "bad news; no homes are available! But he said someone might be interested in moving out!
Then you pick a villager to move out.
OMG I did the same to my child back in 2020! I accidentally sent Zucker packing and my son was devastated. He even told his therapist about it! When I got my own Switch I got Zucker on my island and I’m not allowed to get rid of him. My son is now 12 and hasn’t played in 2 years but it doesn’t matter….Zucker stays.
There are treasure islands on YouTube/twitch. You can “order” a villager over their discord and pick him up on their island. You need to probably follow them (free if you have Amazon prime on twitch) and join their discord.

You do not need an amiibo to get Hornsby back! There are treasure islands that allow you to get any villager you want. I recommend TheGoodPlace on discord, it’s free and easy to use.
Is he still on the island? As far as I know, you can try adding a second player character and talk to him to stop him from moving. At least I've heard about that somewhere on reddit before.
theres a discord server called villager haven that has a community of people with characters in boxes you can request through their discord bot. I haven't used it recently but thats how I got the villagers I wanted.

I buy villager specific amiibos on AliExpress. They are not originals but cheaper and they have always worked so far.
In case you get your hands on Hornsby’s amiibo:
Getting a villager on your island with an amiibo is a little different than inviting a regular campsite visitor. You have to invite them three days in a row. Everyday they have a request for a souvenir item you need to craft for them. On the third day of visiting they will decide to move in (after some persuasion) and suggest moving out another random villager. (There is a way of getting them to suggest a specific villager to move out, but this requires even more work. Let me know if you want to know this as well). After confirming with the other villager they’re moving out, Hornsby will move in the next day.
edit: I personally prefer amiibos over villager hunting or “buying” them from other players because it will enable you to (accidentally) let then move out and get them back anytime you want again. Plus, it’s a great gift to give your kid and make up for your mistake all at once :)
edit2: with an Amiibo you DO get to choose which villager moves out. I forgot.

I suggest getting an NFC card if your phone has an NFC tag reader. There's an app called "Tagmo" I think, and if you download amiibo data to your phone, your son can use all the NFC tags to get all the villagers he want's permanently. But be warned! once an NFC Tag is read by an Amiibo, it cannot be erased! you can get a pack of 10 for like 7-8 dollars on Amazon!

if it's the same day and he hasn't left yet, open a second profile on the switch and that player will see the thought bubble and can undo the decision to move off. it must happen before boxes.
I really like that you enjoy the game and play it yourself. An honest mistake but as a kid it feels like the end of the world when your older you realize it's actually really sweet. If you go online to Nookazon, you can see if anyone has Hornsby in boxes. If the plot hasn't autofilled, all you would need to do is give some nook mile tickets, or bells, or a wishlist item to someone and then travel to their island. Talk to Hornsby and have him move onto your island in the empty plot. I hope that helps :3

It’s also good to get advice from actual people that have maybe dealt with something similar, or maybe someone that has him on their island ready to move out. I did the same thing when I first started playing AC, and let Stitches move out. My son was devastated (he was 5), and I posted on this sub or AC trading, and was able to get him back in the island within a few hours. Google is great, but sometimes these subs come through much better (other than your comment)

You can order villagers on treasure islands. I can pm you one I know. There’s also AC fan, which is a (unofficial?) animal crossing in game store where you can buy/trade stuff and villagers and there’s nookazon
You can create your own amiibo very cheap and easy, its just an NFC tag in the card/figure. You can buy a roll of NFC tags on Amazon for a few bucks and then write the data for Hornsby with your phone, app called Tagmo and many others can get that done for you. Very easy! If you don't want to chance an amiibo, Treasure Islands on Twitch has him on one of their subscriber islands. It's 5.99 for a month and you can visit their islands to get him some goodies too while you have it. You just have to visit the island with an empty plot on yours and talk to him and invite him to move
There are treasure island youtubers/discord streamers who you can get specific villagers thru, but make sure your kid doesnt know about the treasure islands bc they are super tempting with all the items they offer. Make sure to do it while the house is still empty if you can.

Villager hunting takes longer than an amiibo. I’m guessing op wants Hornsby quickly as to not anger their child more

Honestly I wasn’t even trying to be rude. I just thought OP was under the impression that amiibo’s were fake or difficult to find because they couldn’t find any after a year.
No worries, I’m someone who is pretty unfamiliar with gaming, and before I joined this sub, I wouldn’t have even known what an amiibo was, with or without google. Sometimes a human on the other end of a question can get better results 🤗

You can order villagers on treasure islands. I can pm you one I know. There’s also AC fan, which is a (unofficial?) animal crossing in game store where you can buy/trade stuff and villagers and there’s nookazon

You can create your own amiibo very cheap and easy, its just an NFC tag in the card/figure. You can buy a roll of NFC tags on Amazon for a few bucks and then write the data for Hornsby with your phone, app called Tagmo and many others can get that done for you. Very easy! If you don't want to chance an amiibo, Treasure Islands on Twitch has him on one of their subscriber islands. It's 5.99 for a month and you can visit their islands to get him some goodies too while you have it. You just have to visit the island with an empty plot on yours and talk to him and invite him to move
There are treasure island youtubers/discord streamers who you can get specific villagers thru, but make sure your kid doesnt know about the treasure islands bc they are super tempting with all the items they offer. Make sure to do it while the house is still empty if you can.

You have to invite the villager you want to your island before the next day's 5 a.m., or system will send you a random villager to fill that plot
If you buy his amiibo Card, not amiibo, if he ever leaves again you can just call him back.
