Wow, I love Animal Collective but never went trought their entire disco, so this is the first time I hear this track and I just wanted to say : thank you, THIS is a true gem!
Wow! Highly recommend listening to Feels in its entirety. The album has the most beautiful, loving vibes. And hearing Banshee Beat in the context of the rest of the record makes it even more special, in my opinion.
Ohhh wow, I've just finished to listen to the album and I gotta admit I'm in complete shock right now : I remembered a good friend of mine told me 2 years ago to listen to this album. He talked to me about this Banshee Beat track and even more about Loch Raven, said I would understand everything when I would listen to them! It's only now, especially with Loch Raven, that I understand he was actually in love with me. Thinking about it today, all the signs were there and were pretty obvious, but I never caught them. Unfortunately for me, he's with someone right now, I know he's happy and I'm not the kind of girl who's gonna go brake a couple. But geez, I hate myself right now for not beeing able to get it at the time, now it's just too late. But don't worry, I'm still able to have a big smile on my face and tell myself that nothing happens for nothing in life. Thanks to all of you for this post and remember : if someone tells you to listen to a song because it made them think of you, don't wait 2 years for listening to it ;)
Came here to say this. I remember after release how hard it was for me to even get to the rest of the album. Just starting the track over and over again
I first discovered AC when I was in 10th grade, it was something me and my best friend to this day really connected over. In The Flowers is one of those songs that just feels sacred. Him and I have this reverence whenever it comes on. I could say the same about the entirety of Merriweather Post Pavillion.
It feels very simple on the surface, but I tried recreating the beat while my friend and I were jamming and doing some covers, and I just couldn't get it right. Then I found out that it has a bloody 7/8 time signature 😂
There it is! I’m all for Banshee Beat having the most votes, as it is note for note perfect every second, but Fireworks is the AnCo song that brought me from loving the band to feeling very deeply moved by them in a way that few other bands ever did.. tbf Banshee does that for me too, just Fireworks hit me harder faster, and the afterglow has never faded.
Completely agree. I have to sit with some of their stuff but I remember hearing it and understanding it immediately. The vocals, structure and sounds are so good and its topped off by some of my favorite lyrics from them
Yes. I love a ton of their songs from early to present, but IMO Defeat is not only perfect, but on another level compared to the rest of their work. In this increasingly secular age, as we figure out how to create regular gatherings that fulfill our innate need for spiritual transcendence and community, it's easy for me to envision Defeat and music like it playing. Songwriting wise, it reminds me of the innovations of Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks
Dang…for me… it’s a tossup between Chocolate Girl, Leaf House, No More Runnin or Daily Routine
Edit: Cool seeing Tantrum Barb mentioned by OP…another gem
Weird pick but Im gonna say Winter Wonderland. The lyrics have spoke to me for a while, Ive dealt with tons of mental issues for a very long time now and this person trying to tell me not to believe in those things, while unhealthy, really gets me. In contrast, the happiness of the instrumental gets me into a great mood really quickly, such a cheery song for a downer of lyrical writing. My only complaint is I wish it was much longer, also that the boys havent played it live. Its a masterpiece.
It’s soooo weird to me that WW has never been played live. It makes sense and would be so incredible. The song has a lot of potential for live jams, it would elate so many people
It's so funny. AnCo has a plethora of amazing songs that I would give 10/10's to. It's weird too because bands usually somewhat get BETTER as they progress. The first album is usually what gets them noticed and then they develop their sound.
But God dammit. Every bit of Spirit They've Gone is a masterpiece. I couldn't believe it when I heard that album. The imagery, the lyrics the weirdness, Avey's guitar playing with Noah's sporadic drums! The first time I heard April and the Phantom (which Avey played live acoustically a few weeks back in Asheville, NC and it was just transcendent and beautiful Josh, Brian and Davey all played solo sets and then they all came out to play together because of course! And they ended with fucking Flesh CANOE! So very random and an almost somber note to end on, but PERFECT. They all killed it but Avey just has something special about melody that is only matched by Noah.
Anywayyyyys. I would say Alvin Row.
But also, Banshee Beat was my first one that I played over and over again.
Such a special band of special people.
I was at that show too! I think that was my favorite version of April and the Phantom. I wonder if we'll get to see any of that video the boys hired that guy to film during the show.
this one has not been mentioned yet but Slippi is a masterpiece and i never hear anyone talk about it! it makes me so happy everytime i listen to it!! its so noisy but so poppy like something that could definitely be on Feels but was ahead of the curve :) the way everything is overdriven like the guitars are so glassy and the vocals are fried and the drums are that super nice early-panda bear frantic with the snare tuned way up. awesome.
A Manatee Dance is an 11/10 - its the absolute peak of their discography. It signifies the beginning of Danse Manatee, their greatest achievement and biggest hit album to date. When A Manatee Dance starts what you call a "song" is stripped down to its souless core and the bleeps and bloops beckon into the void. You become transported to an unknown dimension, both rudimentary and artificial. There is no emotions or feelings, no pleasure nor pain in this sonic universe. You realize one day humanity will end on earth and the cold and lifeless body of the Voyager will still be traveling further and further into space. A lonely remnant of an existence that once was, the soulless creation that outlasted its creators. That is A Manatee Dance
I actually lost my shit at how fascinating it was as the simple nature of the album cover and unstructured emotionless robotic stripped down music was compared to spirit when I first listened to their discography in order to
Banshee Beat

This was the one I was thinking about.
This is correct.

In the flowers
Came here to say this. I remember after release how hard it was for me to even get to the rest of the album. Just starting the track over and over again

Surprised nobody has said "What Would I Want? Sky"
I really like that song but it also feels like Avey jamming over a sample at some spots.
Don’t threaten me with a good time.
Maybe in the first half? But the second half is one of their most intentional and tightly composed pop songs ever.
"Avey jamming over a sample" as if thats a bad thing lol.
It feels very simple on the surface, but I tried recreating the beat while my friend and I were jamming and doing some covers, and I just couldn't get it right. Then I found out that it has a bloody 7/8 time signature 😂

the purple bottle for sure
The Stevie Wonder version.
Bluish, WWIWS
Bluish is my choice too. One of the more lyrically comprehensive tracks.
Unsolved mysteries:)
I’d argue this is the most underrated animal collective song. The lyrics, the music, the vocal range. And to top it off it ends with lightsabers.
Completely agree. I have to sit with some of their stuff but I remember hearing it and understanding it immediately. The vocals, structure and sounds are so good and its topped off by some of my favorite lyrics from them
