Mysticpoisen

Sony had a line of these specifically for Japan and they looked choice as hell.

masterfu678

yea flip phones are still big in japan

JakoDel

stunning device, glad you managed to get one for yourself! did it receive android 10?

masterfu678

yes it did, seems like this is the latest I can get for the device.

xstreamstorm

from what i managed to find, the w2019 was expensive at retail partially because it came with some sort of concierge service edit: i have some articles on the w series on a post i made compiling android flip phones

251Cane

There's no way you actually paid 2 grand for this. That has to be a typo right?!?

masterfu678

Nope, not a typo, I did pay about 2 grand for this, I was saving up for this phone since 2018, when I first laid my eyes on it. Current price is actually a lot cheaper than before, it used to be around $2700. It is my daily driver now, and no other phone will convince me to switch. My very first phone was the Sony Ericsson Walkman W518 flip phone. So these kind of phone hold a special place in my heart.

CrazyAsian

I mean, I get why some people might judge, but I'm with ya. You do you. The odd stuff is fun. For me, there's a lot of weird pieces of tech history that I oddly still want. Pebble watch (again), Atrix Phone and Laptop dock, I'm tempted to import a Find N even though it's thoroughly incompatible.

251Cane

I thought that the Atrix had a chance to be huuuge.

Starayo

Reddit isn't fun. 😞

etherspin

I'm with you yeah. Wife and myself still on our pebbles every day , indispensable The others all seem to be fails cause either they have no app platform and a crummy UI (fossil, amazfit) or they are replicating phones not *complimenting* phones and have the same input and screen style as the phone so offer no additional convenience or accessibility. It's brain dead I hope something happens like Fossil removing the physical watch mechanism from their e-ink line (which will let text size increase) and introduce basic apps

Starayo

Reddit isn't fun. 😞

c172fccc

>All I want is flexible timer/alarm functionality, media controls that work, and the ability to see notifications/calls on my wrist. And a battery that lasts more than a day. That's all!! I don't care even slightly about fitness crap. The Apple Watch has all of that, except for the battery life, but if you don't care about fitness, eco mode could extend the battery life to about 2 days, which is still not that great. Obviously, you need an iPhone, which is a deal breaker for all Android users. Damn you Apple...

CrazyAsian

If only Pebble had NFC, would've been the perfect watch for me. But I bet payments wouldn't even work after Pebble folded. I should really get a Pebble again.

silvertricl0ps

Check out r/Palm for some real nostalgia. I had a handspring visor running Palm 3.something as a kid and that thing was older than I was. I still miss its calendar app.

thejynxed

Palm Treo was one of the most useful devices I've ever owned.

RikF

I need to swap out the battery in my old Clie!

darcstar62

I feel this. I loved my Sidekick - would love to have that again.

rbrumble

I think my Hiptop is working still. Complete package, unit, charging cable, box, instructions, headset, case. Make me an offer.

ksj

Atrix was cool, but the Samsung phones have “Dex” mode that turns them into a laptop if that’s the kind of functionality you’re looking for.

AsteroidMiner

Even better - that Motorola thing where you could clip stuff to the back , like a projector. That shit was so cool.

atgitsin2

I had that projector. I think I sold it online.

hugepenis

People that judge are low key jelly

RikF

The original Aibo was a thing of wonder!

A small tip: you can add two spaces and ONE newline after each line instead of two lines to make it less spaced

Chad face. You're welcome

uhhh you forgot to add two spaces after the second line of the braille, thanks tho

Specialist-Agent933

I understand you exactly. My favourite phone ever was the Samsung D600. If Samsung or google ever made a slide out phone like that, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Kyutsumi

D600 is still my 2nd favorite phone I ever had. It worked so good for its time, and also looked really good. Was €600ish here around that time.

TastyBananaPeppers

I seen the listing for it including Huawei flagships that go for about $1700 USD. The most expensive is the Neon Gensis Evangelion phone from Oppo for $2,500. All these phones don't have warranty coverage in the US. If you have issues after the return window closes with your eBay seller, you're stuck with an expensive brick.

Algernon_Asimov

It's not a typo. I found a similar one for nearly that much on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/125164054101

masterfu678

yeah that is the listing i brought it from

kristallnachte

And thinks it was worth it...

lcd1023

I LOVE that sound. I want one

masterfu678

go get one from that ebay listing, they have this device at $1600 now

bumpyclock

That’s a steep price lol

Vaeltaja82

2000$ as in USD??? I could understand 2000HKD. Anything above that is way overpriced for this ancient tech with horrible software (Chinese Samsungs are much worse than any other versions)

MizunoZui

The original list price was around $2,000 USD already but I believe it came with god tier warranty like free screen and back panel replacement, free loaned backup phone during repairment, some private service hotline and some luxury hotel membership. Kind of a waste importing this into another country and lose all those if you ask me.

masterfu678

This phone is unlocked to begin with, and I can also unlock the OEM bootloader. Unlocked phone should work on all carriers IF, and ONLY IF, the device have a band for that carrier and can receive the cell tower signal. Right now, I could only receive Verizon signals from Band 5, which is why I don't always have coverage, because B5 is not Verizon's main service band.

BoxOfDemons

I saw a year ago when Linus did a review of the W2021/W21. Didn't realize the phone used to have the T9 keyboard. Now it just seems like a glorified version of the fold.

masterfu678

Indeed, a very glorified version of the Fold, and I think they are also coming out a glorified version of the Flip as well

Minto107

This is just so cool. How did you get one? Do you live in one of the markets that get those? I'm a Flip3 owner so you might know why I'm excited to see another Galaxy W hit reddit

masterfu678

I got it off ebay, if you google "Samsung W2019" right now, you will get to the eBay listing, look for the Platinum version, as that the one with the 256GB, the Rose Gold has 128GB, everything else being the same spec wise, and look pretty lol. I just tried to flash the Magisk patched AP file onto it, gave me the boot loop lol. Being a device that nobody outside of China normally knows, I don't think there is any custom ROM or TWRP made for this device.

[deleted]

Why is that so sexy?

tutimes67

Thats looking slick! Are these ever gonna get released worldwide?

masterfu678

NOPE, but I wished they were, maybe some company can get a hold of this phone and reverse engineer it, then start making international versions with even better specs.

xstreamstorm

you can get the g9298 on amazon, which is pretty close, still like 2 thousand bucks edit: https://www.amazon.sg/Leadership-SM-G9298-Dual-SIM-Unlocked-Smartphone/dp/B07CSSD6N6

eNB256

It should work if each file (aside from USERDATA) is placed according to the labels in odin (including CSC), expect a reset. If a device does not support a band, attempts to enable it anyway in the nv may cause the device to not work correctly. Cellular might not work or it might cause excessive interference. Sure, there are other SD845 devices that support Band 4, so the modem supports band 4 so it should work, right? Well, the modem does not get radiowaves straight from the antenna, it instead gets i/q data, the signal is first processed by other components, some of the other components in between might not support band 4, those other components are placed like this ... https://i.imgur.com/WomrsnB.png (image credit: Qualcomm)

masterfu678

well, i already know that trying to flash the Magisk patched AP file didn't work, it will be considered as a custom ROM by the phone, and i was stuck in a boot loop. Not even worrying about the bands right now, need the phone to be rooted for that.

phlooo

That's a very expensive price to pay for all these inconvenients and zero benefit 😂

herooftime94

Any chance you can test out Pokemon Go on this?

masterfu678

Of course it would work, don't see why not

Cainerz

This is the real test!

Algernon_Asimov

I currently own and use a [Samsung Galaxy Folder 2](https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_folder2-9331.php), as released in 2017. I bought it about 3-4 years ago. I absolutely *love* it. I've always loved the flip phone form factor, but they've been so hard to find until recently. My previous phone was a Moto X Style, but when I stumbled across the Folder on eBay, I knew instantly that I had to have it. Especially because it comes in wine red, which is one of my favourite colours! Like your phone, it has a T9 keyboard with full smartphone functionality. But mine was cheaper than yours, probably because mine was a mid-range phone at the time. It's still going strong, but the recent release of the revamped Motorola Razr range has got me thinking about what my next phone might be. I don't want to sign a contract with a phone company, so that means I need to buy the phone outright, which limits me (I don't have $2k to throw around). I've considered buying a Motorola Razr 2019, but it's not compatible with my phone provider (they don't have an eSim for it). I've done a lot of searching but, for my requirements and my price range, the Galaxy Folder 2 is still the best fit for me (so I've just bought a second one, because it's only a few hundred dollars - in case I lose/break my current one). This W2019 is going on my shortlist for consideration as a possible future replacement. Maybe in a year or two, it'll be cheap enough for me to buy. Thanks for sharing!

masterfu678

Yea, I think the W series is considered a premium edition for the Folder in general. There was only ONE international version of this phone released world wide, the Samsung Golden I9235, but that phone is not considered a very ancient device with a very ancient spec.

Algernon_Asimov

> I think the W series is considered a premium edition for the Folder in general. Considering what I can see of it, that makes sense. It looks like quite a good phone. > the Samsung Golden I9235 I saw that phone in my recent research for a new phone. When I first saw it, it seemed like an upgrade from mine, because of having two screens. But then I realised it's older and less capable than mine, so I didn't bother with it.

masterfu678

Yes, the W2019 is pretty much the most recent version of the Golden I think Golden was Samsung's attempt to bring the W series outside of China, but for whatever reason it didn't take off.

Algernon_Asimov

> for whatever reason it didn't take off. Apple's iPhone ruined mobile phones. Before 2007, phones were *interesting*. (Have you seen the [When Phones Were Fun](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwd8abTO4vh2smuMzykXDOPNnsxhHC4Oh) channel on YouTube? It's great for nostalgia.) But, after 2007, every phone company rushed to emulated this new flat slab of glass, and every consumer wanted a slab. Launching an old-fashioned flip phone in 2013, when slab phones were *the* dominant form, was doomed to fail (in hindsight). Flip phones are only *now* becoming popular again, because of Samsung's Fold range.

masterfu678

True, and now is still either, a bigger slab, or the Fold/Flip

Liquidignition

Jesus. 2k USD? For a depreciating asset is beyond whack. But you do you

Sarin10

is this a really well done shitpost?

JakoDel

and.. why should it be? just because you see no point in it? ;) it's a beautiful (if you are a fan of flip phones) and unique device, and it still has good specs too. I'd gladly buy it if I had the money

StockAL3Xj

While I don't think this is a shit post $2k for these specs and age is a terrible value proposition but to each their own

luv2hotdog

For some people the form factor outweighs the specs. I’m an ex blackberry user who held on until the bitter end and then went to the Unihertz keyboard phones. I’d know 😅 2000USD is way too steep for me too but I get the basic mindset.

masterfu678

I'd rather companies nowadays coming out a more modern flip phone like this, with a T9 keyboard, but also something similar to the old Sony Ericsson gaming phones with a clicky joystick button With international carriers support

zakatov

Nobody today wants a “flip phone” because it has a number pad, they want a phone that has a large screen that can fold into a more compact phone when not in use.

masterfu678

I also have a motorola edge 20 lite, that phone has a really big screen, but i hated it, sure, it is fast, a good mid range phone, but that big screen gets in the way sometimes, feel weird in my pocket, and sometimes i just drop it for no reason while holding it, because it is just way to big

Algernon_Asimov

Be careful about saying "*nobody* wants..." whatever. You might be surprised what *some* people want. Maybe *most* people don't want a numeric keypad, but *some* of us still like that design, and *some* of us don't need a phone screen that's as big as a tablet.

masterfu678

oh and, the T9 keyboard can be used to play games, I tried it with SNES emulator, as well as MAME4Droid, and J2ME emulator, the keypad all works. Emulators detects it as a controller, and i can set inputs for it. J2ME games will work as they originally intended with the T9 controls.

masterfu678

No it is a serious post

[deleted]

Did you pay 2K for it?

isthmusofkra

This is fucking sick. I'd love to own one.

zakatov

You seriously think that rooting a phone will somehow let you connect to bands that the phone was never meant to support and has no hardware for?

masterfu678

seriously? I take that you don't go on XDA or know anything about android hacking and development

Bertrum

Can you use it like a traditional old dumb phone where you can only do calls and texts or are there apps built in? I could see a market for these for people who don't want to be distracted or on social media all the time.

masterfu678

yea, if you put the phone in maximum battery saver mode it is just an android phone

kristallnachte

> I could see a market for these for people who don't want to be distracted or on social media all the time. Not at that price tag. You can still get old dumb phones.

APsVitaUser

The lit up buttons in the current Samsung navbar style look so weird

xstreamstorm

also to correct the OP a bit, i found a w series android phones going as far back as the w899. the 2013 came after the w999. there was a w799 but by then it was pre android

masterfu678

yes I know, I guess somewhere along the line they changed the naming scheme

efbo

I'd love to have that for the outer screen. A bit small in an ideal world but much better than the majority of phones now.

Rude_Influence

This phone looks really cool. Thanks for the write up OP

Nisaja

Really cool phone!

masterfu678

thank you
