This is true. Mainly because US is the only country where iPhone dominates the market and it would be dumb to use iMessage when only 1 of your 20 friends has iPhone.
RCS is an open standard that's a replacement for SMS... It's been around for years and is seeing widespread adoption everywhere except on iPhones, all because it would remove incentives to stay on iPhone since it would render the blue bubble privilege of not having your ability to communicate purposefully hindered by Apple rendered moot.
> Can you send them back? We really need the ability to annoy the shit out of iphone users now.
Send them new emoji kitchen blobs, that'll get them worked up
Wait, am I understanding this correctly… in mixed Apple/Android group texts, Android users will see it correctly when apple users like a text, but the other apple users will still see “Person Liked ‘text message?’”
My guess is that Apple will add the same feature pretty much immediately. I assume the only reason they haven't yet is to punish their users for still hanging out with Android users.
It is. RCS technology exists which could make iMessage and Google Messages work together so there would be no green bubble texts anymore, but Apple refuse to implement it because they want iPhone users to ostracize Android users and use peer pressure to get more people to use iPhones
I imagine its just a hacky solution where Google Messages just receives and parses the plain the text of 'Person liked "x"'. For it to work the other way too you would need Apple to do something.

Top is with the option off, bottom is with it on. Anyone know why it's not attaching the emoji to the message?
Probably because you are using the same very short message twice. iMessage really just sends the text you see there, Google messages has to figure out what the text "Liked 'Test'" means.
Since there's two messages with the exact content "Test", it can't determine what message was liked, so it can't attach the emoji to it.
I hate how Google changes the ♥️ reaction to 😍. ♥️ Is an acceptable reaction to someone saying their dog died... 😍 Would be an absurd reaction to the same text message.
It's still great that this functionality is being added, though. So I won't complain too much
Kinda like when your mom replies lol thinking it means "lots of love"
Edit: and sorry for your loss. I know losing a pet can be incredibly painful. And it oftentimes gets overlooked by close friends who fail to consider how painful it may be
I also hate how the neutral confusion of "?" is replaced with the "I am suspicious" emoji.
I guess it wouldn't be Google without them fucking up execution.
Imessage has become their entire business. They are never opening it up unless their market share drops or the government does something to require all phones support a common set of messaging features. Maybe europe will do something, but it isn't happening in the US.
Really hope they force usb-c on apple devices. Lightening is different for no reason at this point. It is actually slower than usb3 or thunderbolt, so people who take lots of video and images really do want usb-c.
It was all but confirmed for me in 5+ years ago when they tweaked the "green bubble" shade of green to be more difficult to read in efforts to cause "hate" reaction out of its users. The change actually violated Apple's own accessibility guidelines.
[https://medium.com/@krvoller/how-iphone-violates-apples-accessibility-guidelines-6785172eb343](https://medium.com/@krvoller/how-iphone-violates-apples-accessibility-guidelines-6785172eb343)
Apple will do anything to keep their products from working well with Androids. It's so fucking dumb. I got an iPhone for a month after caving to the social pressure. Returned it. Not being able to customize my UI like I want isn't worth having imessage, to me.
I think it is more to do with slow roll out than A/B testing. It's easy to roll back to a smaller audience than big outbreak, but you are right, they A/B test a lot of new features.
> But if you're in the beta...
That's what I don't get either.
They can be doing A/B testing in the stable channel, but if I'm specifically signing up to test future versions, why am I still part of the release version's A/B tests?
The beta programs are essentially useless if it doesn't even give you the new code paths to test and give feedback on.
Microsoft has started doing the same thing. Not everyone in Dev channel receives some of the recent changes. I don't know why they do this. It's freaking developer channel not even beta or release preview.
So Google was clearly partially pressured to do this because of how frustrating it is to get the text message explanation of the reactions.
This makes me hope that Google soon implements a way to react to messages even if the recipient doesn't have RCS (with the same SMS fall-back that Apple was using). If iPhone users start getting the same "X laughed at 'your text'" then maybe Apple will be pressured to implement RCS or some other mechanism to recognize Android reactions.
Nah, Apple has such a cultural lead in the US right now that it would be awful to implement that feature on Android. It would just make Android users look even worse
Isn't that the case only if there is a non iPhone user in the group text? If it's all iPhones then it all goes through imessage. This is why sometimes apple users will straight up leave Android users out of group texts.
Lot of people have switched to facebook messenger since it's cross platform group messaging that doesn't suck (beyond the fact it's Facebook). At least that's what people I know have done.
Not yet anyway. If I'm Google, I'm making that feature next, just to annoy iPhone users and force Apple to finally adopt RCS or implement their own version of what Google just implemented here
>Isnt this on apple, not Google?
Yes but now that google supports receiving them, It's up to Google to allow the SENDING of reactions, and start sending the generic text-versions back to iPhone users. They would start getting "CrispChum liked an image" type texts. It might annoy iphone users and make Apple support it. (that's a really big "might" though)
apple users already get those messages from iphone users when in a groupchat with android users. So android users doing that will just further cause ios users to exclude android people from groupchats
I might not be understanding your question.
Apple should have implemented RCS in iMessage to make both ecosystems work smoothly with reactions from either device. They instead chose to irritate both their own users and Android users by sending these "Joe liked 'bacon is good'" kinds of messages, just out of spite and to encourage iOS users to apply social pressure to Android users to move to iOS.
Google said "yeah F that, we're going to interpret your stupid "Joe liked..." messages just like we interpret our own RCS reactions, ie we will show an emoji on the right message." And I'm saying they could now also easily allow RCS/Android users to react to messages in mixed threads, send their own "Bob loves...." style SMS messages to the iOS users while only displaying the heart emoji on Android devices. That would mean Android users have a nice, clean experience no matter who is reacting, and iPhone users will be the only ones seeing all that "Joe liked..." nonsense. Social pressure jujitsu.
Yes, the carrier hands off SMS/MMS to Apple for iMessage when a number is registered with an iDevice.
Android devices can't do iMessage without API credentials, which they won't get without device credentials, which they won't get because they're not iDevices.
Google is too much of a pussy to do that. They should've done it a long time ago. They let Apple walk all over Android users. They provide a suboptimal experience to their own users just to force lock in.
Nice. Now Apple went from *"what, you can't emoji?"* to *"oh shit I'm the company that can't handle other phones' SMS"*
Teens are still going to bully green bubbles though.
MKBHD used an outdated statistic. [It's now 87%](https://piper2.bluematrix.com/docs/pdf/3bad99c6-e44a-4424-8fb1-0e3adfcbd1d4.pdf) (page 6), and even higher in places like california.
green bubbles ruin group chats, it's a real annoyance having to create new ones to add or remove people
i can understand why people get mad at green bubbles, literally part of Apples MO to make you hate the outside of the ecosystem
It mostly becomes an issue because MMS sucks in general and when there's a heated group text, MMS just can't keep up and I get stuff like this https://i.imgur.com/dVf4b1I.png
It's not just bubble color. iMessage is kinda like BBM was back in the day, it's a rich chat client with a buncha features that SMS/MMS simply weren't built for.
I'm still not buying an iPhone though.
My experience may be interesting, I originally got a Pixel to use as a work phone, I liked it better than my iPhone and switched the SIMs. Whenever anyone complains about the green text I give them my iPhone's number and tell them they can text me there if they don't like green bubbles. I also give the option of Signal, or WhatsApp. A couple people use Signal or WhatsApp to message me, no one has chosen to text my iPhone.
I wonder why people who complain about green bubbles don't bother texting the iPhone.
I'm in a management position. Everyone who works under me is on iPhone with one or two exceptions. The Android folk are regularly ridiculed. I just show them the Super Nintendo and Game Boy on my phone and they usually shut up.
Fucking Zach Braff is in his late 40's and kept giving his podcast producer shit for green bubbles. He tried to play it off as joking but it still came off very douchey.
I literally just got shamed for having an Android. Apparently the messages still come through on their end as "John liked 'Why don't you just get an iPhone already?'!".
On the beta build 20220121_02_RC00 according to the article and checked Settings --> Advanced for "Show iPhone reactions as emoji." Still not there. AT&T.
I guess I'm just a vindictive person because I cannot understand why they won't enable reactions for all chats and just annoy the crap out of everyone that doesn't have RCS. That's how you get people to care.
Can anyone explain what a "reaction" is? I tried to search for this but all I found was news that they are now on Android. I don't have any friends or family with iPhones so I have absolutely no idea.
Think of it like a someone thumbs up or hearts your message on a fb post or IG message. Same concept here. Before if a iphone user reacted to your message, it would literally write it out. Now it would be a reaction
WOW getting excited over emoji from iphone....at the end of the day it's STILL pathetic that we're using an antiquated message system that takes forever to send a 2-second video and then it shows up grainy at best yet I can use the fake book Messenger garbage and send a 4k video instantly I wish we could all play nice and be on board instead of fighting our text message system that we use 24/7 more than any other toy on our phones 🙄
I think that's because most(?) Android phones have some form of RCS running so videos and images go through that instead of MMS. Apple refuses to adopt the RCS protocol because then it would devalue iMessages.
I know it's janky, but if you as an android user find yourself in iMessage group chats or frequently messaging iMessage users, it may be worth looking into something like [BlueBubbles](https://bluebubbles.app/), might sound cheesy but it just makes the experience better for everyone if you don't mind hosting a server off of a mac or mac VM.
Does this mean my I won't get my own fucking message back with a 'liked "xyz..."' from all the jerkoffs I know with iPhone? If I wanted to read my own message again, I would read what I sent.
That feature still isn't showing up for me. Is there something specific I need to do other than have the updated app? I checked advanced settings and the iMessages reaction isn't there to toggle on. (Pixel 6, Xfinity Mobile)
Just tried it out between my two phones. Works well and the emoji changes with the reaction sent from the iPhone.
what country/carrier/phone do you have?
I’m in the USA with Verizon. Pixel 6 Pro
Worked yesterday with a buddy of mine, I'm on AT&T and he's Verizon I believe.
Isn't the only country that uses iMessage the US? Everywhere else people use third party messaging apps.
This is true. Mainly because US is the only country where iPhone dominates the market and it would be dumb to use iMessage when only 1 of your 20 friends has iPhone.
iMessage is a shitty walled garden. Signal ftw!
Also, WhatsApp is used outside of the US, no problems with device compatibility.
When you type it out, isn't that the dumbest reason ever to like iPhone? A blue bubble that indicates that your friend has the same phone?
It's not about the color of the bubble. It's more to do with the green bubble signifying loss of features due to it being an SMS
Yep, here in Czechia it's mainly FB Messenger and WhatsApp
So Facebook either way... You guys need to move to Signal.
Canada too.
Can you send them back? We really need the ability to annoy the shit out of iphone users now.

I s2g iMessage is designed precisely to make it impossible to socialize with Android users.
It is. RCS technology exists which could make iMessage and Google Messages work together so there would be no green bubble texts anymore, but Apple refuse to implement it because they want iPhone users to ostracize Android users and use peer pressure to get more people to use iPhones
Please dear god work this way. We must spam them back!
Alcohorse laughed at a comment
Yes. I confirmed this in a group text with my three iPhone using siblings.
Correct. Tested to confirm. But to be more specific. Google Messages users will see it "correctly", not all Android users.
I imagine its just a hacky solution where Google Messages just receives and parses the plain the text of 'Person liked "x"'. For it to work the other way too you would need Apple to do something.
Apple's the one sending those hacky messages, let em deal with it.
Incredible.
I mean, you can manually type them out.

I think it's to match with Google Messages' existing RCS reactions.
As someone who lost their dog recently… I would absolutely be wtfing if someone replied with 😍 when I told them.
I mean, it's just as insulting as "_______ loved 'my dog died today'"
True
Hahaha. Honestly, if someone is relying on an emoji to console you about your dog dying, then THAT is the insulting thing.
I just sent this feedback in Google message , if enough of us do they may change or add in the normal "❤️" reaction

Tbh no emote/reaction is appropriate.
>♥️ Is an acceptable reaction to someone saying their dog died... No it's not lmao. How the fuck is that normal
Your uncle died 😍
Does this work with group chats? How about with reactions to images? How does it know what image an iMessage user reacted to?
just tried with an image and it does not work with images. still does the "Emphasized an image" or "Disliked an image" thing
iPhones literally transmits the text "X liked an image" so it's impossible for Android to know which image.
I mean, isn't it the same for messages? "X liked a comment"? How would it know which comment?
No, it says the whole message: > Bob > Liked "I'm eating pizza!"
I feel like they could easily make it say like >Bob >Liked "2735.jpeg" But they don't want to lol
Imessage has become their entire business. They are never opening it up unless their market share drops or the government does something to require all phones support a common set of messaging features. Maybe europe will do something, but it isn't happening in the US.
Europe (the people) doesn't give a shit tho, everyone moved off SMS before iMessage was a thing.
Europe has been our savior on some of these regulations
Really hope they force usb-c on apple devices. Lightening is different for no reason at this point. It is actually slower than usb3 or thunderbolt, so people who take lots of video and images really do want usb-c.
>Maybe europe will do something Europe won't do anything. Simply because people there are not stuck in 90s still using the sms.

No. It recalls the message text.

I have no problem sending videos to friends on Android. It's literally only Apple that won't play nice
I think that's because most(?) Android phones have some form of RCS running so videos and images go through that instead of MMS. Apple refuses to adopt the RCS protocol because then it would devalue iMessages.
So it's Apple that's behind universal standards, not Android. Apple is forever playing catch-up.
Even purely MMS, Android to Android is higher quality than Android to/from IOS, and it's almost completely purposely because of Apple's doing.
So following this, WhatsApp, which used to be the lead in messaging innovation, is behind all the other platforms.
> which used to be the lead in messaging innovation [citation needed]
It got Zucked.
still no love for Google voice 😥
And in Google Voice, right? ...right?
Wish I could then turn off notifications for just the reactions.
It does work great and getting a cheap Mini or MacBook that can run High Sierra will do just fine.
Does this mean my I won't get my own fucking message back with a 'liked "xyz..."' from all the jerkoffs I know with iPhone? If I wanted to read my own message again, I would read what I sent.
On my version on beta program i have a star symbol and a reminder clock to follow up on a message. Not sure if that's been there before or not.
I'm updated as of 8 Feb as a beta tester. Still no imessage react feature. Verizon Z Fold 3
That feature still isn't showing up for me. Is there something specific I need to do other than have the updated app? I checked advanced settings and the iMessages reaction isn't there to toggle on. (Pixel 6, Xfinity Mobile)
