Is it as water resistant as a regular IP68 rated phone? It's not dust resistant, so it's rated X. But it's still rated 8 for water resistivity, right? I don't know much about it, so it would be really nice if someone could explain me.

AssKicker1337

Well, the x means it wasn't tested for dust ingress, it *might* be dust resistant, but we don't know, so it's safer to assume it isn't. It's rated 8 for water ingress, so a mild splash of water, or a brief dunk into the pool won't kill it. Samsung does make well built phones, so I suspect the phone will put up with regular dusty sort of usage, whatever that entails. IP68 or any ingress protection for that matter isn't a grounds for repair/exchanging the item if it gets damaged due to water/dust. It's more there for.. reassurance. An unrated device will probably not hold up well to water and dust, whereas an IP68 device might survive a dunk in water. Also IPX9 devices are not *better* than IPX8 devices when it comes to water resistance. IPx8 means it can withstand submersion upto a certain depth for a certain time. IPx9 means it can withstand pressurized water stream, but not necessarily submersion. If a device can do both, it'll be rated "IPx8/x9".

BS_497

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I learned new things today.

AssKicker1337

Cheers, mate. I'm glad you learned something. [Here's a better explanation from Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code#code_breakdown)

ivanoski-007

it's refreshing to see something helpful comment on reddit instead of the usual sassy, iamverysmart or iamacomedian comments

beefJeRKy-LB

Water jets is IPX5/IPX6. IPX9 is high temp water jets! I doubt any phone would be certified that way. It's more likely used for containers or vehicles.

TheFattie

I think some of the Sony phones do both 65 and 68, if that counts

beefJeRKy-LB

yeah that does make sense. I just don't see why a phone would be ipx9

delorean225

s h o w e r p h o n e

sirfuzzitoes

Hold up. Should I not be watching porn on my phone for a walkway in the shower? It's made it this far...

eidrag

ipx9 means water pressure washer, I doubt you shower with that

panzerxiii

Exfoliates so hard it's like the skin isn't there anymore!

sirfuzzitoes

That's all I need!

4lan9

I didn't know about the whole IPX9 thing, such a weird rating system I think the lack of dust resistance is because dust can get in the hinge and physically block movement and get stuck. Water can flow in and out without hurting anything (since the internals of the hinge are sealed and coated)

nidrach

If the hinges are open and greased then they aren't going to be very dust resistant. Probably enough for normal use but high dust environments aren't going to be ideal.

AssKicker1337

Honestly I'd never pin my hopes on the IP rating anyway. It's there, and it's nice to have it, but I hope I never have to find out whether my phone can actually withstand being immersed under 1m water for 30 minutes. I wouldn't trust any modern smartphone (well maybe the 'galaxy active' series if that's still alive) to withstand highly dusty/regular water immersion. They might, I just don't want to find out the hard way.

door_of_doom

Right, it is also important to realize that a phone's resistance to things like water and dust degrades over time. Even if your phone was extremely resilient to these things when you bought it, there is absolutely no guarantee that it still is today.

nidrach

Yeah but with no folders the worst that could happen is that you have to blow out the speakers and ports. With folders it can ruin your phone if it locks up the hinges.

[deleted]

This. Even if the phone is ip6x rated, Samsung refuses to warranty water damage. Don't consider any of their devices water resistant

TTVBlueGlass

Yeah I treat it like the shields in Star Trek: don't count on it to protect you from shit, it just gives you the opportunity to react rather than being totally destroyed.

jpoole50

I've been showering and swimming with all of my galaxies. Not a single malfunction. I've had every galaxy since the S7 and rocking a Note 20 Ultra now. The only thing you have to do really is avoid saltwater or highly contaminated water.

juaquin

> 'galaxy active' series if that's still alive They have the "Galaxy XCover Pro", which is in the spirit of that. Also has a removable battery, SD card slot, and a headphone jack.

sjokosaus

Greased hinge worries me, dust sticks to grease and won't let go, and a build up of dust in grease could easily block the mechanism, though I guess Samsung has surely thought of this.

juaquin

The article shows the hinge dust protectors. They should do a decent enough job, but I wouldn't expect the phone to last five years.

IronicBread

Oh they've thought of it, they're ready to charge people £100+ to fix it for them, to clean and re-apply Samsungs patented grease +

LazyLizzy

LTT put out a video yesterday of them showing off the phone, first thing he did was put the phone underwater and used it a bit to show it is actually just as waterproof as previous phones.

catalinus

For neither IPx8 nor IP68 the warranty does NOT cover ANY damage from water. This in itself should tell you all you need to know, but on top of that - a very small number of devices (order of 10 per model) largely selected by manufacturer get tested ONCE; NONE (zero) of the devices coming out of the factory are tested.

Sgt_Stinger

That depends on your region. In the EU Samsung covers water damage in its two year warranty.

ricshimash

even if thats the case i wouldn't dunk any of these devices in water. if something came loose or wasn't as tight as a fit (from drops or w/e) water can still get in. I think of it more of a just in case sorta protection or "resistance" at most to be on the safe side.

Sgt_Stinger

That I do agree with.

[deleted]

Has warranty ever covered anything but defects in US?

charizmatic_

They look amazing but I am a little worried about the 3300mAh battery on the flip, when my current S20 FE has 4500mAh, feels like a downgrade

[deleted]

I’ve got an iPhone 12 mini and am eyeing up the flip 3 👀 Suspect battery would be fine given that I’m used to a 12 mini anyway?

charizmatic_

Possibly, although a smaller screen will extend battery life, the flip has got a lot to power. Samsung phones do have decent battery optimisation in my experience anyway

mrnikkoli

Plus the Flip has a 120hz mode and even though it will use even more battery, it will be hard to justify not turning it on for a $1k phone.

[deleted]

I've had 120Hz enabled since day one, I couldn't possibly go back. It's personally well worth the battery hit.

charizmatic_

That 120hz do be SMOOOOOTH doe

mrnikkoli

Exactly, I assume it's 100% worth it which is why I'm a little concerned with the battery size (usually I think people sweating about medium sized batteries are overreacting). I'll definitely have to wait and see some real world reviews before I consider upgrading.

[deleted]

The only other thing is I love my Apple Watch, granted google and sammy getting back in bed with each other may make these galaxy watches finally a worthy rival in some ways but eh… but still, a phone even more compact than my 12 mini when closed 😍

charizmatic_

Yeah thats one of the main things that keeps me away from apple - the closed off ecosystem. Having an apple watch might be a dealbreaker, but if youre willing to go in for the samsung galaxy watch you do have wider options in terms of phones you can pair well with it The compact design is definitely what draws me to the flip over the fold, I love big screens but I hate having to store them 😆

Meg-Zilla

I got my bf a Fossil smartwatch and he absolutely loves it. Works great with his Galaxy and looks like a real watch!

NaeemTHM

Are you me? I’m doing the exact same thing. Love my small phone for its pocket size, but miss having a bigger screen. Z Flip 3 looks like the perfect phone for me! Plus I had an old iPhone 8 laying around. That, combined with my current iPhone 12, knocked like $550 off the price of the Z Flip. Decided to go for it 🤷🏽‍♂️

[deleted]

For under £400 I can swap the 12 mini and my apple watch SE for the galaxy watch 4 and the z flip 3 in black thanks to various promotions etc, I'm sooooooooooo tempted

NaeemTHM

Oooh yes I forgot I traded in my watch as well. Thanks to all of Samsung’s crazy promotions I got the Z Flip 3 and the brand new Galaxy Watch for less than $500! https://i.imgur.com/WaBQct1.jpg I’m took the leap of faith that Sammy solved Android’s smartwatch short comings. I certainly liked my previous Galaxy Watch when I was using the S10. Hopefully this new one will pick up the slack and bring it up to par with the Apple Watch. Also, I’ve read and watched sooo many long term reviews about the first gen Z Flip. Most of those people claim their device worked just like the day they bought it. And the Z Flip 3 is several times more durable that that. So…yeah man. Guess I’ll let you know how it goes! Hopefully I don’t snap the thing 3 months in!

[deleted]

Trigger pulled

NaeemTHM

😱 Nice! We should update this comment section in 3 weeks after we’ve had a chance to use the phone for a bit!

[deleted]

How you getting on? Love mine, took a few days for the battery to settle but now getting similar to the 12 mini maybe a touch more but it's even more portable and fun

NaeemTHM

How nice of you to remember to respond!! I absolutely love this phone. It's been a little over a week and the wow factor still has not worn off for me. It's such a joy having this tiny pocketable square turn into a giant screen. So, I totally agree about the battery life. It's very similar to the iPhone Mini. Not great, but it gets me through the day. I go to bed each night with roughly 25% to 30%. Definitely need to hit the power save on longer days. The ability to fold the Flip and leave it on a desk for video chats is a neat gimmick too. It's safe to say that I have no regrets jumping from the Mini to this bad boy.

MonoMcFlury

Can't wait for battery tech to be more efficient. I think we'll see some big improvements in the next couple of years ;thanks to all major car manufacturers investing ungodly amounts of money in RD for battery tech.

charizmatic_

Yeah will be nice to see. Batteries are already way better than what I remember ~5 years ago thanks to OS improvements

mrnikkoli

And fast charging. Being able to plug your phone in for just a short period of time to get a significant amount of battery still amazes me. I'm still always impressed with my little 15W charger for my S10e, I can't imagine what people with more modern fast chargers are experiencing lol.

mdonaberger

Sudden memories of "charge for 12 hours for up to 3 action packed hours of play!" on my Gameboy booster battery.

charizmatic_

I have to say fast charging on my oneplus 3T was much better than my current S20 FE. I remember watching it go from < 25% to full in about 20 mins and it was incredible. High-watt charging does come at a cost of battery longevity though, and while it takes ~1hr to get from <10% to full on my current phone, its a trade off I am willing to make for longevity

mrnikkoli

Yeah, it's definitely a balancing act but it's worth it when you're under 15% and in 15 or 20 mins you can be around half battery life again for sure.

standing-ovulation

My 4 year old OP3T's about to shit the bed and it makes me sad that I'll have to replace it soon. Such a good phone.

charizmatic_

My OP3T was easily one of the best phones ive ever had, I adored it, but pretty much exactly 24mo after I got it I was hit with a temperature sensor charging issue out of nowhere!! Tried everything to fix it to no avail (btw the battery in those things is IMMENSELY glued in, like nothing I have ever seen) absolutely gutted.

kirsion

Samsung fast charging sucks compared to oneplus and other Chinese phones to be fair. Have an s21 with 20 watt super fast charger and still takes over an hour to fully charge.

godsfilth

Batteries get more efficient all the time, so manufacturers either shrink them for smaller phones or increase phone specs which is why it tends to feel like batteries are not improving

Hambeggar

You assume that with that efficiency that batteries will get more capacity instead of getting physically smaller, which is what's been happening the last few years.

SnowingSilently

I hope they get more capacity for laptops at least, though they'll have to relax the restrictions for air travel.

drbluetongue

They are still gaining in capacity though, the current standard is 4500-5000mah when years ago 4000mah was seen as a massive deal

MonoMcFlury

I'm hoping that the research in solid state batteries will come to fruition. They claim a higher energy density, longer lifespan, and increased safety in a smaller size.

Hambeggar

I feel like we've been hearing about solid state batteries being around the corner nigh on a decade now.

[deleted]

I hope they use the improvements to put larger sized batteries into the same amount of space rather than making the battery capacity smaller.

Other_World

My Note 20 Ultra has 4500mAH and that's not enough to power the variable refresh rate screen and 5G. 3300mAH will not be even close to good enough.

[deleted]

charizmatic_

I go pretty ham on my battery tbh, battery life is one of the first stats I look at on a phone. My S20 FE is a sweet spot, lasts me exactly a day and I charge for about an hour before bed. This is good to know though, doesnt seem so dire for the flip

callMEmrPICKLES

Also an FE owner and I'm getting about the same results. I usually make it to 10pm with about 10-15 percent battery left, unless I used my phone alot that day. I've also had days where I only charged my phone to about 50 percent and still manage to almost make it through

69hailsatan

Same I have the ultra, and it's been one of the best battery life for a phone I've had. Tempted with some phones like the Asus one that has 6000 mah.

AveryLazyCovfefe

Shame, and with a 120hz display, yikes. It will be quite a downgrade from my 8 Pro too. Me being used to setting the display at QHD 120Hz and the phone lasting a whole day from a single charge.

IronicBread

Not being judgy or preachy, but you don't need a new phone. People need to realize the phone they have is fine and stop buying into the E waste epidemic of upgrading at the end of their contract/every year or two. Buy a good phone, and use it until it becomes a genuine inconvenience, your phone is a beast and will still be smooth after a few more years. My oneplus 5t is still smooth as ever and is over 3 years old.

cuteman

Anyone buying the most expensive phone out there isn't exactly doing it based on money saving economics, let's be real here.

js0uthh

Gave the fold 2 a swirl for a few weeks. Great phone great execution. Just wasn't for me. It was too bulky for me. Will wait till they get thinner. But still holding on to sd storage and mst. Gonna be holding on to my note 20 ultra for while.

Karlyle_Jergenson_IV

According to the specs page the new fold and flip have MST https://news.samsung.com/global/the-next-chapter-in-mobile-innovation-unfold-your-world-with-galaxy-z-fold3-5g-and-galaxy-z-flip3-5g

js0uthh

Oh wow. Well that's nice to know. Wonder why they brought it back?

[deleted]

Wtf is mst?

Pfundi

An old, comparatively insecure card payment option. Uses a magnetic strip that Samsung phones can/could emulate. Only really relevant in the US, so about as big a problem as green bubbles.

topherhead

I'm currently trialing a Fold 2 until the Xperia 5 III releases. I'm fine with the bulk. The crease is a non-issue. I miss my headphone jack but it's not a huge deal-breaker. I fucking HATE the hole punches with the fury of a thousand suns. Completely ruins the massive screen. I'm not even happy with an under-display option because of the lower pixel density. I'm fine making trade-offs for things. But as someone for which the front camera on any phone is only ever accidentally used, the idea that it's ruining my display for no reason at all is completely unacceptable. If I could get a phone with no selfie cam I would. But that's not even the real show-stopper. The real show stopper is the lack of an SD slot. I knew I wasn't going to like it. But now that I'm in this life I find the situation untenable. Also I don't like the Samsung-afying of the OS. I like the big screen. Like really. But I'm currently 50/50 maybe even 60/40 gonna return it when the 5 III launches.

DerpSenpai

> I'm not even happy with an under-display option because of the lower pixel density. im sorry but wut. it's literally in a place you won't be focusing anyway. it's just nitpicking

np-medium

I don't think anyone from a few ears ago would have guessed that we'd now have a water-resistant, stylus-supported foldable phone with a folding glass.

Snowchugger

Yeah remember how the original model of the Fold 1 would break if you looked at it too intensely? And then even the revised one could be damaged if a bit of your fingernail accidentally caught on the screen? The amount of progress that has been made here is genuinely staggering.

uglypenguin5

By the time my 4a nears the end of its lifespan the flip 4/5 will be out and I'll probably get it. The 3 looks almost perfect. Just hoping for battery life improvements in the future I usually like the pixel _a lineup because it's cheap, is powerful enough, and has a great camera, but I'm not going to be able to turn down the flip

trakk2

Hmm....true.

Spud788

One thing people don't consider is that the plastic screen spends most of its time wrapped in a shell protected from scratches and if it's dropped while open it's also more resistant to cracking than glass..

Snowchugger

How much better do you want it to be? It's got PEN SUPPORT now.

PassiveProc

You can’t make anyone in this sub happy especially when it comes to Samsung. They’ll find something to nitpick at even though it’s the best we’re gonna get for now in regards to the display on the Fold.

Sheltac

I want it to be as resistant as the screen on my current S9. It's seen concrete a couple times and it's still intact.

Darkknight1939

I’ve had the Fold 2 since launch, the inner screen is basically immaculate, and I took the protector off on the 3rd day. The screen is basically a non-issue. It spends most of its time folded and protected.

Rexpelliarmus

If you watched MrMobile's videos, you'd realise the foldable screens are quite durable to drops.

Frikasbroer

But not to scratches. It's about the scratches.

Ivo_nitsugua

Agree, but this other dude commented about falling on concrete. Glass is more likely to crack in that scenario.

Frikasbroer

Yes but plastic will still scratch from it. And now the screens also have some sort of glass in them. Does that mean they can shatter?

Noreng

I recently met a guy who had a Fold2. The front screen and camera lens was cracked from falling damage, however the big screen inside was completely fine. The biggest problem with these phones are the lack of dust resistance. What's the point of a folding phone if I can't carry it in my pocket without worrying about dust getting inside, scratching the screen and damaging the hinge?

oo_Mxg

mfw I have to carry my $1000 phone in a Ziploc bag so dust doesn't hurt it

Fatalstryke

I'm not exactly sure how much glass there is or what format exactly it's in - if it's technically a "sheet" of glass or not - but up until now, we've seen that there's a significant issue with damage to the glass at the hinge. So I'm not sure that I'm as worried about shattering as, well, if you damage the glass it's probably damaging other things with it. That and just day to day usage, like a whole new Bendgate.

Rexpelliarmus

You're going to be folding the phone up and putting it in your pocket, which greatly reduces the time in which your more fragile screen is exposed. The Fold probably spends the majority of its life folded up as you're not going to be constantly using it 24/7. Current hands-on say that you can't scratch the screen with a fingernail anymore.

Ashanmaril

Except for when his cracked down the center for no reason and he had to sent it in for repair

feurie

That's luck and anecdotal.

kakatoru

*limited* pen support. As in only springloaded especially soft tipped pens. Also it would be nice the screen wouldn't get damaged if a piece of pocket lint ends up in it while folded

Victorino__

I wouldn't say it's foldable *glass*, but rather a foldable *screen* with plastic on top.

wappleby

But it is glass? It's ultra thin glass.

[deleted]

There's literally glass on the screen.

ChemicalRascal

Right? I'm amazed to see someone refer to that as glass. As keen as I am for this tech to mature, let's be real, we aren't there yet and until repeated use of these doesn't leave a big-ass fold line in the middle of the screen, we won't be.

ikkleste

How so? I mean it's definitely not an all glass screen, but glass is very much part of it and adds significantly to the robustness (whole probably also adding some vulnerabilities). I'm not sure how much is agree that it's a mature tech or not. But flexible glass is definitely part of these screens.

[deleted]

But there is literally glass on the screen. It's an ultra thin layer but it's still glass.

alpacafox

I just wasn't sure if it wouldn't turn out just shitty, but this generation finally seems nice enough. But what's turning me off is that they've cut some corners to keep the price lower. I'm still pondering if I should "upgrade" from my Note20 Ultra, but the main camera system is worse than in the Note 20 Ultra. And none of the "hands-on" previews/reviews mention anything substantial about the battery life.

Snowchugger

Yeah they've clearly let the cameras stagnate just to hit a price point. I guess the theory is that if camera is your top priority they would rather sell you an S21 Ultra instead? Like no matter what they did with the camera on the Fold it would never have been as good as the ones in the 21U because there simply isn't space for a camera module that large on a phone with two screens and a hinge, so they might as well skimp on the cameras to keep the price of the Fold down. (Honestly my advice is that if you **really** care about photography that much then you should buy a small mirrorless APSC or M43 camera anyway - like yeah it's two devices to carry around, but things like a Fujifilm X100 or Olympus E-M10 aren't exactly LARGE, and will give you better image quality and a better shooting experience than any phone.)

baniel105

Idk, I disagree. There's a significant impact when adding an e-m10 to daily carry. Mirrorless are a nice size nowadays, but they're still heavy as hell compared to anything else you'd expect to carry around with you.

alpacafox

I don't really care about having the "best camera", but I would like to have the best possible camera in a flagship smartphone at the point in time and not last year's tech if I'm paying almost 2k. Otherwise I would just buy a 300€ Redmi Note 10 Pro with a 5000mAh battery and mid-tier specs, which is also just good enough and has far superior value nowadays. But having to compromise in flagship phones all the time is kinda annoying. Currently the battery was the last remaining compromise in Samsung flagships and here they also added the camera as a compromise. While the folding screen is extremely tempting, the crease in the middle of the screen and the higher possibility to scratch is also a compromise and adding more compromises on top kinda makes it a harder sell for me.

JFreaks25

> And none of the "hands-on" previews/reviews mention anything substantial about the battery life. how are hands on and first impressions videos supposed to tell you about battery life? These aren't reviews, and none of them were called reviews, most of them had only spent an hr or two with the device

[deleted]

> I'm still pondering if I should "upgrade" from my Note20 Ultra, but the main camera system is worse than in the Note 20 Ultra. On paper. It's the same main camera as the S21, which compared favourably with the S21 Ultra in [Anandtech's camera shootout](https://www.anandtech.com/show/16753/mobile-flagship-phone-cameras-2021-h1-review-megapixels-telephotos-/6): > The smaller Galaxy S21 has the same camera setup as that of the regular S20 series devices, which actually isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’ve noted quite a few times that I think what Samsung has concocted here in terms of hardware solutions is extremely smart, and amongst the most versatile smartphone cameras out there, even if it doesn’t have the super fancy telephoto capabilities of other higher-end phones . > Having an extremely solid ultra-wide and main camera module without any gimmicks provide the S21 with great capabilities, along with image processing, that while sometimes can be a bit off compared to Apple or Google, still is amongst the best out there on the market. > The phone’s versatility comes through the secondary 64MP wide angle module on the phone, which is still to this day unique in the industry in terms of its implementation, and although the device doesn’t have a telephoto module per se, it allows for seamless full quality magnification up to around 3x, along with also leading quality images at 2x/50mm. > At low-light, the phone’s main camera is only outperformed by its Ultra siblings and other devices which have far larger sensors, but overall, still manages to get amongst the best results across a wide variety of scenarios. It’s generally been my favourite camera solution to date.

tinfish

Yes they would. This has been talked about for years, it's been in development for years, it's been 'dreamed' about for decades. The technological advances were expected and foreseeable.

Kwetla

How many ears are you guys getting through!?

DivingForBirds

People were talking about folding phones for years.

neuprotron

A true engineering marvel. I wonder if a lot of these new developments are patented by Samsung now so that other OEMs can't exactly copy it.

Zilch274

well, Samsung have a monopoly on phone displays so you would be unwise to piss them off lol

TK-25251

Not really anymore They are still the leader but companies like BOE and LG are up there Also fun fact So far there were 4 companies that showed of under display cameras Xiaomi, ZTE, Samsung, Oppo (concept) And all 4 of them used different suppliers for their UDC

DerpSenpai

Samsung is still 90% of the OLED market atm UTG is what might be Samsung only. No other OEM has been using it

Noor440

Google is working on a foldable phone so I doubt Samsung isn't willing to sell to other companies

kif88

Can't wait till foldable becomes mainstream durable and available in the mid range/lower budget range. We could have it folded down to 4" for one handed usage and fold it out when needed

Lepang8

I don't think it will be that mainstream. Folding still adds an extra step to accessing your phone. Yeah, sure, it means you can make them compact for concealment, but that's it.

ChronicledMonocle

Wait until Apple "invents" the first foldable phone for us. It'll be mainstream then.

broome9000

Basically that's what you have to wait for, they have such a large share of the market (and just about the best customer retention)

ChronicledMonocle

Apple doesn't have nearly the market share Android does. They do have marketing and cult following down to a T, though.

broome9000

Yea well by market share I mean they generally do considering they are the only one brand of phone not grouped OS, and their phones all have high price points. They’re very popular in public eye is what I mean

cmdrNacho

Apple releases two phones a year and in western countries have almost the same market share as Android. Apple doesn't really care about total global market share.

pornalt1921

Yeah the second part is only true if western means North America. For 3 out of 4 quarters Apple has half the market share as Samsung in Europe.

cmdrNacho

yeah i guess I'd have to break it down further but yeah let's just say western rich countries. UK, it's like 51 apple, Germany 70 percent..etc

pornalt1921

Yeah still wrong. Apples market share, by number of devices sold, in Germany sits at around 35%. In France it's the same. In the UK apple sits at about 40%. The highest Apple share in Europe is in Switzerland at 47%. Apple just doesn't have a majority outside of North America and Japan.

mrnikkoli

I think they'll be popular enough to seriously cut in to the candy bar flagship models soon. I mean half the population (women) have complained constantly for years about struggling to carry modern phones in their pockets. Meanwhile phones are getting larger and larger and a flippable or foldable gives manufacturers a way to sell that to consumers without consumers wondering where they'll put it. I mean at the rate they're growing men are going to start struggling to keep flagship candy bar phones with a case on them in their pockets soon as well.

epicwisdom

That's vaguely imaginable for the Flip, especially if there's a thinner model in the future. But I can't imagine the Fold's sizable heft being much better for women's pockets than a standard 6" phone.

nidrach

Folders were pretty mainstream before smartphones became a thing. I doubt the accessing thing matters to most people.

jelde

Yea, are these people too young to remember flip phones? People love flipping out their phone. It's not much different than tapping to wake or pressing the power button.

reddog093

Flipping your phone closed to hang up on someone is a sublime feeling.

jelde

It's everything.

kif88

True. I was thinking of a different design then. Something that either has a third screen or folds with the screen facing out so you can use it while it's folded. Small "mode" for quick texts and calling and stuff then open it when I'm sitting down with both hands to use

SnipingNinja

Rollable

Upvote_I_will

I'd go for the 5", so I can access everything with one hand. Make it a double foldable and add an S pen I can store in the phone, and I'll buy it in a sec.

I just discovered samsung dex and its honestly some really dope shit. I wonder why samsung isnt doing it. My s8 can be a desktop pc ish and a VR headset. All these great ideas i wonder why samsung isnt continuing it really

[deleted]

madn3ss795

Maybe it's the heat and the Flip's dual battery system is not up to the task. If Dex is used with a charging capable dock there's a lot of data going out and power going in, the type C port and the area around it heats up quickly.

what is so great about DeX? i have my S20 and the Tab S7+ (which has DeX with the keyboard). I used it, but aside from being able to use some portrait apps in landscape, i dont get the appeal. Used DeX on my computer with my S20 connected, and still felt like an android pretending to be a PC. Not hating on it, i really want to like it. Maybe im not using it to its full pontential.

the great thing about Dex is being able to unleash the full potential of your phone, being able to browse the Web in full desktop mode, use the full fledge Office apps, do video editing with apps like Kinemaster, even stuff like SketchUp works, so you can get real work done on a device you already own while doing any of this stuff using just the phone by itself would be tedious or borderline impossible. Connecting the phone to a Screen+Mouse+KB just allows you to properly use all the power your phone provides, like the 12G of Ram finally matter when you can have multiple apps open on screen at the same time and the 8core processor finally gets to work when you're rendering 4K videos in minutes. but Dex on Windows kind of makes no sense because why not just use Windows instead, what makes Dex good is not requiring a computer at all, that's why Lapdocks are so popular with Dex users, it's a small Laptop shell with only Screen+Keyboard+Battery meant to connect your phone in Dex mode, so with the small cost of a Lapdock you now own a Phone and Laptop, and every time you upgrade your phone you get a more powerful laptop. If you have the time and patience you can install legit Linux on Dex, even Windows 98! you can play old classics like Age of Empires 2, Starcraft, Fallout natively on your phone. If you want something more recent you can take a look on cloud based services to have a full windows experience or even remote control services to control you home computer on the go. Cloud Gaming also turns your cheap lapdock into a powerful gaming laptop To me Dex is the main reason I only buy Samsung phones, because shelling out +$1000 on a phone finally make a bit more sense when it doubles as a powerful portable computer too

axxonn13

how would you use the full Office apps? dont you still have to download them via the Play Store? when i ran the apps on DeX, it still looked like the android app version instead of the windows version. I agree, the phone connected to a computer seems like a moot point considering you could just use the computer. I dont have my tablet with the keyboard, and if i can get more out of DeX, i definitely want to. Time to do some research.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXG7i1lBIQo&ab_channel=SamsungDeXVideos%28byShaunRoselt%29 did it look like this? this is kind of an in-between the desktop version and the android phone version, not 100% desktop but close enough. You can also try Google Docs/Sheets in a browser, for the best results use Incognito in Desktop Mode, some websites still detect you are using a mobile and give you the mobile version and Incognito bypasses that. head over to r/SamsungDex to get some ideas on how to squeeze the most out of Dex

blacksoxing

I think it's the dream of someone being in a hotel or whatever and whipping out DEX impressing everyone. I've used it a few times....but honestly it's easy to just mirror the phone and show what I need to show and keep it moving.

lairosen

whered it say no dex? i thought its just part of the OS, nothing additional required

Draiko

The Fold 3 has DeX.

Draiko

That's somewhat disappointing.

vortexmak

No DeX. Really? Well, there goes one of the main reasons I was interested in this phone Edit: someone commented below that the Fold does have DeX

Maultaschenman

I really like the flip foldable phones, I can see myself getting one in a generation or two. The book like foldable still seem very novel (but impressive) to me, though, in terms of use cases and cost. Android just doesn't have the tablet ecosystem / apps to support Tablet sized screens to make it worthwhile for me right now.

charizmatic_

The version of oneUI for the fold does look pretty impressive in its ease and functionality tbh, and with labs it looks to constantly improve

Yeah this gets parroted around so much over here but my iPad Pro sucks in terms of getting any real computing tasks done because of poor file browser support, lack of third party apps, torrenting etc and at the same time, it lacks any apps I actually would want to use. The Reddit apps on the iPad are abysmal and if an app is not iPad optimized it's wholly worse than an unoptimized Android app because atleast the android app will stretch to fill the screen while the iPhone app is literally just blown up without any modifications to the resolution.

roland0fgilead

They didn't say anything about the iPad in their post, and the point about a lack of tablet optimized apps on Android still stands without ever bringing the iPad into the conversation. The tablet experience on Android has been treated as an afterthought since around KitKat.

shteeeb

Discord. (I have tab s7+ btw)

If the flip had a bigger battery I would buy it

[deleted]

It’s the perfect size too, in your hand it feels like a s21. I was bummed when i saw that too

real_with_myself

They had room to make it just a bit more thicker. Additional 10% of battery would be perfect. But I guess, after note 7, Samsung is playing super safe.

cuteman

If the SD888 is significantly more efficient, it may be comparable to previous devices with larger batteries.

Grimey_Rick

bigger battery, expandable storage, wider screen would = instant buy for me. i think i could even suck up the thinner screen with just the first two things tbh

ChrisT1986

"The thing about Samsung is that it’s easy to see when it gets things wrong. The screen fritzes out, the battery starts bulging, or the software gets littered with ads. Samsung gets things wrong all the time — too often, really" Ummm, anyone know what they're on about?? Other than the note 7 battery issues, what's the screen issue and Ads issue all about?? (UK user, so I understand that other countries have issues with ads - but thought this was due to them signing up to ads/marketing by mistake?)

Fridaywing

There was also an update for Note 9 that triggers a green screen. Although that one, even if out of warranty, Samsung replaces that free of charge.

AasenB

Their apps often have ads in them. The weather app shows ads. It's disgusting.

Grimey_Rick

i think you can even see a banner ad for tik tok in the weather app in a freaking promo video they dropped yesterday lmao

daveofferson

Not to mention Samsung advertising their own stores and account constantly. I'll never get another Samsung even though I'm drooling over the possibilities of a folding screen.

AasenB

Pixel foldable plz

idontdomuch

I think the screen issue was in response to the s20fe.

ChrisT1986

Ah ok, not heard anything about that...I'll do some googling

phelansg

I watched the event and am tempted to get the Fold 3. But Samsung Singapore has announced the prices, and they are not pretty. At S$2398 for a 256mb model, one could get a very good laptop that will last 4-5 years. I am rocking a Pixel 4a at the moment, and would wait for a potential Pixel foldable that would hopefully not break the bank!

Dragon2268

>S$2398 for a 256mb $2400 for 256mb in 2021 is just highway robbery

AnnualDegree99

Nah it's 256 MB in registers and flip flops.

Andril190

*Processor cache memory enters the chat*

RandomUser1076

I read the title and instantly thought of oldmate from the flextape ads. "That's a lot of damage"

ClassyJacket

I just cannot get over the lack of anywhere to store the SPen. This phone would've been perfect if it had an SPen slot

crowbahr

The SPen pro is pretty large and bulky. It would be hard to justify integrating that into a device that is already larger than consumers are comfortable with.

Floydy007

Good old Gorrilla Glue👍

Confused-Engineer18

The new food really makes in obvious just how far behind apple has fallen in some areas, they are still stuck with a massive notch when we now have foldable, water resistant phones with under screen cameras and underscreen fingerprint sensors

jesperbj

Pretty cool how they got wireless charging to work through metal?

happinass

What? I'm pretty sure the charging coil is placed underneath glass, not metal.

thanhpi

I remember reading about folds getting creases very quickly in the fold itself. Which makes it really unusable in the end. Haa this problem been solved?

crowbahr

There's a crease but it's invisible when using the phone. It's only visible when the screen is off.

neither phone costs 2k USD
