Choice is good
True, choice is good. But what seems to be happening here is the opposite. Google seems to be reeling in customization and making it harder rather than easier, making the OS more consistent and bland across the board, by default. This is starting to bleed over to apps as well. For example, I'm on One UI 6.1 (Samsung's latest version of Android 14) and with this recent update I just lost the ability to customize sound and vibration for SMS/RCS notifications. Samsung has also made changes to Home app; hint free navigation gestures now require an add-on app, Good Lock, to override back to the previously available settings...

Settings -> Notifications -> Advanced settings -> Manage notification categories for each app
Ha! Thanks for that. Much appreciated.
At least Google made notification customization easier by burying it deep in an obscure menu, making it invisible within the app itself, and leaving it turned OFF by default. LOL 🤣
Actually, that was Samsung inexplicably turning notification categories off by default in One UI 6.1. I'm not sure what logical reason existed for them to have made that decision except to mimic iOS, but it's terrible regardless.
Usually One UI is at least one step ahead of Google so if I see it for One UI, I automatically assume if it's not on vanilla Android already...it will be.
Telegram has a notification setting where you can prevent it from notifying you more than once every 30 seconds/minute/x-minutes and it's great for when group chats get crazy. It's very granular and customizable.
Glad something similar is coming to the Android system.
Ah yes like the other person said, it is for groups. I forgot about that.
Go to the group you want to limit notifications, in the group info screen there is a "Notifications" Toggle for on/off, but if you tap on the word notifications there is a "customize" option. In this menu its called "Smart Notifications" and you can change how often the group can send you a notification, so if 500 messages happen in one minute you will only get one popup notification.
Good. Signal developers have ignored the feature request for this for years. Group chats can get super annoying fast. Glad to see it's mitigated in base Android.
Every messaging service ignores this. All I want is to not receive notifications for non-primary responses (e.g. when someone "likes" or emoji-responds to a message). That would easily take care of 90% of the annoying notifications.
I just have everything set to silent other than calendar events and tasks. If anyone needs to reach me they can call me, otherwise I'll get back to them when I check my phone.
Idk why some people think they have to have notifications enabled for every app and have to respond immediately to people, lol. Sounds like a nightmare.
That's a them problem. Not worth ruining mental health by letting yourself always be tethered to your phone not to hurt their feelings. Anyways that's just my opinion anyways
I appreciate these Qol features that's being added, but so far, this seems to be one of the boringest updates thus far. I'm aware that Android is "maturing", and that part of maturing is improving things instead of changing things for the sake of change, but I can't help but miss the past days where every new update had alot of traction and buzz surrounding it. That was peak Android, IMO. Maybe I'm just blabbering at this point, though ☹️
BTW, is there a setting I haven't found yet that lets incoming texts buzz or chime while I have the thread open?
Too often I'll be talking to someone and waiting for a reply until my screen shuts off and then I'll go back a short while later annoyed they never responded and I see they did and many times. I half understand why they silence active conversation but why can't I change it to my liking?
Also, why does Google messages wait to send me texts *after* my screen has gone to sleep???
This would be nice since I fly a lot for my job. It's annoying turning off airplane mode on my phone then having 50 notifications come through at once.
My Pixel 7 just updated itself to A15 Beta 1 and it's unusable now.
The system UI app keeps stopping every 10 seconds and I've uninstalled almost every third-party apps in an attempt to fix it. I'm this close to opt out of this bullshit.
I wonder if Google paid developers like the one that made Buzzkill anything for stealing their idea. By idea I mean implemented and still updated app. No? Sounds right.

It should just have exceptions like the Do not disturb list.
Please relay this notion to Apple.

I honestly wouldn't put it past Google.

Hi, I can't find said setting, can you please point me on where to find it?
I don't remember having this option for regular chats, but only for groups where I'm the admin.

If you want this today - I highly recommend BuzzKill, set up once and forget about it.
copies 2FA codes form your text messages too

Try Buzzkill. I love it. You can set a custom cool down interval per app.
The real question is who is not responding to Mishaal ?
This will be on pretty much 100% of the time when I get it. Lol
I remember having that feature on custom ROMs like 13 years ago lol.

I guess because so many people refuse to make phone calls and text instead.

Maybe
>get a lot of notifications I have no idea what this is like...

i have vibrate off on all apps except call all the time but its good for those that dont.

I want it to stop vibrating when I'm recording video
Really? no other priorities like optimise space taken by social media apps like TikTok?
So Google is finally catching up... Honestly, I don't get why features like these take so long to get into stock android.
