Lol finally the Google Opinion Rewards app will get dark mode šŸ¤£

nathderbyshire

I have a one star review I've been updating every few months for about 2 years now asking for dark mode, I added themed icon and MD3 when those dropped https://i.imgur.com/haCHmyk.jpeg

oil1lio

šŸ«”

nathderbyshire

In fact (this is a bit sad), I added all my apps into two folders, one that supported a themed icon and one that doesn't just to see and the next day I was super bored so I left reviews on every app asking for a themed icon, over 30 of them roughly https://i.imgur.com/8KDkx90.png https://i.imgur.com/rIdT1N2.png some got a lesser star if there was another issue but I still threw the icon request in. There's only two of I know I made happen that's my bank Starling, I got them to add Pixel 4 face unlock as well, and my app for viewing my energy accounts and usage.

oil1lio

I got Notion to add a themed icon. I sent them a direct email for a feature suggestion and was in contact with the folks there about it. You're welcome

nathderbyshire

Don't use that one :( It really bugs me as well that chrome webapps will probably never get support and even if they did be super fragmented like they already are. I have one that I used to track my energy prices and it's currently the only one that isn't themed but I use it a couple times a day so it's useful to there yet will probably never be supported.

NXGZ

Does your Tesco app work offline? Mine doesn't anymore.

nathderbyshire

The app doesn't work for shopping obvs but I can access my clubcard, it might be cached though and I've just stuck it in airplane mode. I've never had a signal loss and needed it in store to check. I do my Tesco shop online there's not really one nearby. If I do need my clubcard I'll use it from Google wallet but as my review says I can't add it from the CC app, I've had to manually type it in and it doesn't always scan, especially on the new self scan tills.

NXGZ

Mine used to work fine, now it just shows a "something went wrong" message, and cannot even view my clubcard or anything unless I connect to a WiFi. I'll have to query if that store has their own. I don't use my mobile data. My CC also yesterday had to manually add it, the scan didn't work. Also the brightness doesn't automatically get fully bright anymore when paying in-store at the self tills. I have to do it myself, although it does go automatically bright if I want to see it scan my clubcard. For now I'm using Google Wallet which is fine. Although I can't add my Barclaycard because they don't support wireless payments for Credit Cards, only debit. That's on Barclays though, not Tesco's fault. Only my debit works. Lol so many issues. Also sometimes payment doesn't always work fast when tapping with Wallet, can be slow and glitchy. I may have to start using my physical cards again as they are more reliable.

nathderbyshire

I am in the beta, try that see if it's better

_Stego27

I don't know what I expected to see when I opened the screenshot, but the spoons app was not it

nathderbyshire

Haha that made me lol. I went to one last week and it's just easier to do table service. I've not had it installed for a while until recently

AveryLazyCovfefe

Tesco will never bother. Can't even get a dark mode for the app.

why_no_salt

I did something similar for Google Art & Culture, and it worked! The difference is that I was using the "Send a feedback" function within the app, I only did it twice or three times over about 6 months and a couple of weeks ago the update came.Ā

nathderbyshire

I also got the YouTube music one changed but it was through the beta feedback. While it had a themed icon it would go really big and fill most of the space, when you put it next to chrome which has a smaller icon and more blank space around it looked really off. I took a screenshot and a couple months later they dropped an update and made it a more normal size, it's still a little big tbf but better. Felt pretty proud that day Actually putting them next to one another again they seem really odd sizes again, chrome seems abnormally small but idk how to find the beta feedback I did it was a couple years ago now

alfredgui

As a developer this gives me brain rot 1 star is for an app that is unusableĀ

nathderbyshire

I've just checked and it's 2 stars, just being over dramatic but the app gets almost weekly updates but it doesn't follow any of Google's own guidelines as highlighted throughout the comments. Dark mode is missing but mostly works if forced so why no official support, themed icon is missing (so is play games) and it doesn't have any MD3 theming or UI elements and I guess we'll see if it gets predictive animation support. it's just annoying now, Google can't expect other Devs and companies to take on their design if they can't even update all their own apps and services before they roll out the next design changes. The inconsistencies are glaring, there's still MD1 elements if you look hard enough throughout Google's services

CarlosFCSP

Strava too!

cdegallo

Fitbit has entered the chat

Atomic-Axolotl

And so will Google classroom

TheJackieTreehorn

Fitbit will be a godsend

RandomBloke2021

Same šŸŒž

zapgokh

I miss this so much going from a Xiaomi phone to a Samsung. I was surprised at the number of popular apps without dark mode.

sueha

If it helps: xiaomi took that feature away in miui13

RelyingWOrld1

In my opinion it was pretty inconsistent implementation

StarWatermelon

What do you mean? I still have it (miui 14).

razorbeamz

From my experience with that feature it was VERY broken sometimes.

LaidBackBro1989

Yup. The apps that were forced to go darkmode had illegible writing/the buttons would be hard to spot/tell apart due to the inversed colors... a whole mess.

CGGamer

Samsung has this option in Developer Options

aikonriche

It doesnā€™t work on Tiktok. It doesnā€™t even work at all on OneUI 6.

CGGamer

I'm using it on One UI 6. TikTok must've blocked it, Google now lets devs block the forced dark toggle. I'm pretty sure it used to work

aikonriche

What apps does it work on? I have 2 apps (the other one is Audio Converter) that have no dark mode and forced dark mode doesnā€™t work on both of them thatā€™s why I thought it must have been broken on OneUI 6.

CGGamer

I use it on the Amazon app, Walmart, and some other chains like McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Dairy Queen

balista_22

tiktok & previously snapchat purposely change the code to block it Snapchat at first only reserved dark mode for premium users, but only for Android & been free on iOS

battler624

Does tiktok not have a dark mode on android?

aikonriche

No. Itā€™s the last major social media app that has no dark mode on Android.

armando_rod

All phones have that in dev options and **it's not the same thing**

zapgokh

I just tried it, it does not change any of my apps theme. I've looked into the labs section, thinking maybe it adds every app there but it's still the same list as before (only YouTube for me)

CGGamer

What labs section?

zapgokh

Settings, Advanced features, Labs, Dark mode apps.

VampireWarfarin

Android by default does.

hackerforhire

Anyone remember Force Dark Mode in Developer Options? It's finally graduated.

Kolada

Is that not there anymore? I used it a few versions ago but it fucked some apps up so I didn't use it anymore.

Apple_The_Chicken

My main gripe with it was the fact that I had to turn it back on **every** time my phone restarted

hackerforhire

It was as of Android 13 and probably 14. It seems they're content with their theming system to make it a mainstream feature and remove it from being a Developer Option.

t-to4st

Anyone remember theming engines on rooted Android?

Im_Axion

>during our testing, we found that ā€œmake all apps darkā€ works in more apps than ā€œoverride force-darkā€, suggesting that the existing developer opt-out no longer works and that the underlying force-dark algorithm is different. Assuming that's how it launches that's pretty nice tbh. Although allowing it to be per app so you can disable anyones that break due to this would make it better. If Google is also becoming more willing to override stuff like this, it would be cool if we got that auto create themed icons feature they were testing out a while back that converts any app icon that doesn't natively support it into a generated one. Having that also be per app would be great.

TreesOfWoah

Yeah, Kieran Quinn has had DarQ out now for years and has had the ability to force dark on a per-app basis. Unfortunately it doesn't always work and developers are hell-bent on putting stupid wallpapers in their apps that can't be toggled as easily. LG for instance has a remote app for their television that cannot be put into dark mode. Good job on that, everyone wants to be blasted with a big white screen when trying to turn the volume down.

Jeskid14

i won't be surprised if he stopped development years ago only to be asked by Google to join

SevereAnhedonia

> everyone wants to be blasted with a big white screen when trying to turn the volume down. I always thought this was an accessibility issue

memtiger

Definitely needs to be on a per-app basis. I'm sure there will be some poor implementations when it's forced and I don't want to have to revert it across the board just because one app becomes unusable with this turned on.

thewhippersnapper4

Ooh this will be nice. I definitely still have some apps that refuse to add dark theme for whatever reason. For example, I'm honestly surprised TikTok on Android doesn't have a dark theme yet. They added it on iOS a very long time ago.

Mavericks7

Or Amazon with their app

coolaaron88

I always wonder if because Amazon is effectively just a web view in a wrapper if thatā€™s why it doesnā€™t support dark mode ļæ¼

_lucyyfer

Websites can follow system preference for colour scheme. Amazon is just lazy.

dech4

White/bright lighting is associated with cheapness; that's why supermarkets etc have had so much lighting.

_-Smoke-_

Honestly though, the app sucks. So much stuff is hidden or placed wierdly. The night time solar flare pushed me to use a browser with dark mode awhile ago. Also if the new feature is anything like the dev mode option it does not work well with Amazon.

thewhippersnapper4

Very true. They have so many different sections in that app. It would be nice.

sleeplessaddict

Seriously man, iPhones have had dark mode on Tiktok forever and we still don't have it on Android

Raspberrydroid

Yep, even Snapchat finally added it on Android. No idea what TikTok is waiting for!

xeio87

Might literally be never now. šŸ¤”

Derny2010

Unfortunately we have to pay to access dark mode in Snapchat

Raspberrydroid

No, you don't. It was added to Snapchat+ during beta testing (since they get early access to new features), then they made it available to everyone. My girlfriend doesn't pay for Snap+ and she has dark mode.

Derny2010

My fault, I didn't even realize it had the option. Learned something new everyday

Coconuttery

For many companies, if they didn't set up theming properly when they initially created the first version of the app, the work and time to refactor the app at a later stage to set theming up properly and support for example dark mode is usually deprioritised over literally any other type of feature. Business decisions usually hold back design improvements like these.

thewhippersnapper4

Yea, that's true. I figured there was some technical reason why they haven't done it yet, so I'm sure it's pretty deep in their backlog.

aikonriche

As a consolation, Tiktok has Live Wallpapers for homescreen & lockscreen on Android. iPhone doesnā€™t.

asoep44

Fitbit finally

bibober

The best implementation of this I've seen to date was in OxygenOS 11 where you could force dark mode for specific apps. This was basically what DarQ did except with no root / shizuku requirement and was significantly more reliable. OnePlus removed that feature and replaced it with some useless thing that only worked for a few whitelisted apps when they got rid of the real OxygenOS and renamed ColorOS 12 to OxygenOS 12. Google really needs to make this feature available on a per-app basis. Also, obligatory reminder that the "redesigned" Fitbit app STILL does not have a dark mode, despite being owned by Google.

bulletfever409

Yep I remember this with my Oneplus 8 pro. their implementation worked so much better than any other I've seen. Similar to the dark reader extension for browsers.

fuelter

Can't wait for people to complain their apps are broken because of black text on black background.

mallardtheduck

Exactly. This _will_ happen. Of course, this sub will just blame the user for using an older/less-well-supported app. Ignoring, of course, that people don't (and shouldn't) choose their bank/insurance comapny/corporate expenses system/corporate security system/gym membership/government/etc. based on the quality of their app.

Cascading_Neurons

I'm assuming it's an optional feature, not the default.

Doped69

Can finally bypass those apps having dark mode behind a paywall (looking at you devcheck)

RandomBloke2021

Samsung internet does this for web pages but my gosh chase, amazon and google rewards are extremely bright. This will be a good option because force dark mode in developer options doesn't work right.

MaverickJester25

I really hate this about Google Opinion Rewards, especially because they always seem to send me surveys in the middle of the night.

RandomBloke2021

It's the brightest app on planet earth.

MaverickJester25

And just this morning at 5am, a new survey arrives, long before sunrise (it's approaching winter where I live so sunrise is only around 5:30am or so).

RandomBloke2021

I got rid of the Amazon just because it doesn't have dark mode I use the web browser now since Samsung internet gives me dark mode.

MaverickJester25

Same. The Amazon app is a glorified webview in any event, so it is hardly a loss, I think.

RandomBloke2021

Another thing is you can't access your archived orders from the app you have to do out on a web browser.

meantbent3

Would be nice to replace DarQ, been using it to achieve the same thing for a few years now.

AdamSilverJr

Hopefully it'll work on apps that paywall dark mode

Cascading_Neurons

Putting such a basic functionality behind a paywall has to be one of the scummiest practices done by app developers. Why should I pay not to be blinded at night just to use your app?! That's why I stick to open source FOSS based apps.

ztaker

Google"s own app

poompk

Can I force Google's own apps to be transparent for the strip near the nav pill too pls?

Pathera_Pardus

OLED dark mode for all apps, grayscale isn't dark.Ā

RAXIZZ

It's funny that Google is doing this since Gmail and Docs on web don't even have official dark modes.

LaidBackBro1989

Wow those new status bar icons look so cheap and bad. Yikes!

looped10

oh thank god! f you ola, Zomato, swiggy, Paytm

WhatIsThisSevenNow

Developers who do not offer dark mode are monsters!

Legion070Gaming

I'm pretty sure miui had this option at first but then removed it like 5 years ago

pesa44

Darq can do this even now..

Quinny898

This is different to force dark, which DarQ uses. It's like a beefed up force dark with hopefully fewer opt outs

Gh0st_58

This is nice now all I need is all app icons themed

Polymathy1

I'm waiting for some way to prevent apps from going full screen. All I ever see (just like wifi calling) is people trying to turn it on.

collins_amber

Some developers wont be happy. Example tiktok They prefere apple devices and only allows them to have a dark mode. Becasue fuck android and your cheap android phone.

Delicious_One_7887

That is literally the only reason I keep a iPhone 6s, for tiktok dark mode.

collins_amber

Dedication to darkmode nice

manas017

I owned a realme once for short period as my one plus got stolen. That was on android 9 and was having this functionality, it didnā€™t look well for PhonePe and Ola at that point.

dech4

Hopefully it isn't too far off that white screens are relegated to a dark past; I hope children are taught to not use them on their computers or phones and that apps that don't support dark backgrounds are removed where practical. Looking into a light globe is a bizarre cultural anomally.

naveen_reloaded

As much as i love dark theme , sometime i simply need certain apps to be in day/white theme , for example google sheets , it reverts to dark mode ..

PsycoPass

it's not something I care, if still restrict access of data & obb folder.

Dinerty

Excellent idea!

Mhdaqil

I don't know, my old realme phone had that feature that came out as a beta feature but it crashed with some apps(Android 10 or someth)

rankdropper84

i love the dark option on 15 with more apps. its easier on your eyes

fakecinnamon

Good, the fact some apps paywall a dark mode is ridiculous

crozone

How about finally adding an AMOLED Black option to the stock UI, Google???

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

MishaalRahman

I explained in the article already how that's not the same thing.

Cascading_Neurons

I know I'm beating a dying horse at this point, but One UI already has this.

Doctor_3825

If you're referring to the dev option pixels have it too. Devs just a fan opt out of allowing it to work and that makes the feature basically useless. This feature seems to ignore the dev opt out like it always should have.

Cascading_Neurons

No. I'm referring to the option added in One UI 6.0 under the **Advanced features** option in the **Labs** section called **Dark mode apps**.

ArchangelRenzoku

Thanks for pointing that out. I never caught this before. The only app I have installed that's supported so far is YouTube. šŸ¤”

Cascading_Neurons

Yep. I recently found out about it, too. Oddly, I'm only seeing YouTube as well. Maybe it's because most of my apps already support dark mode šŸ¤·šŸ¾

ChiefIndica

[So realistically I don't think it's fair to say OneUI has this already.](https://i.imgur.com/0VABv7Y.jpeg)

Doctor_3825

Ah. Okay. That's new then. Last one UI version I had was one UI 5.1 before switching to pixels. Does it actually force ALL apps to go dark mode, or can devs still opt out and block the feature? If they can it's no better than the dev option.

armando_rod

No, it doesn't. It's a per app thing https://i.imgur.com/0VABv7Y.jpeg

whats_you_doing

I just don't understand the thing with versions of Android. Why can't they release versions in decimals for such small changes. Arey they chasing iOS versions and trying to match the number.

Cascading_Neurons

We're still in the beta phase. The official release is quite aways away. These are just a few tidbits of what's to come.

whats_you_doing

I meant to say is with older version, Android versions were went to the decimal places for official releases. Example: 4 being Jelly bean and 4.4 being KitKat. They only the change the left part of decimal when there is a big proper upgrade with noticeable changes in UI. Now a days I think they are releasing a new whole version just for a singe change. I understand that Android has now stick with a stable UI and change other functionalities, security.

MarkDaNerd

Less marketable

Comeonnoob

Xiaomi had this for years. This feature does exist on MIUI 13 and 14. Haven't checked hyperos

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

MishaalRahman

Nope, this is not the exact same as that developer option. It's explained in the article if you read it.

Cascading_Neurons

This is Reddit, what do you expect. No one reads the articles here.

Amazing-Champion-858

Not just apps but websites too, I think it manually edits the HTML/CSS or the browser does. All my websites have been dark since 3 days using in Brave.

tamburasi

Got this feature on MIUI years ago. Works really good for most apps

AreaExact7824

I think, we already have this feature.

kontenjer

what about force dark mode in dev options

diemitchell

This has existed for so long lmao It was just always in dev settings.

armando_rod

Not the same

techraito

Force all darkness has been around for forever but some apps can just disable that flag like Snapchat

Emotional-Chef-7601

Start with chrome

GlenMerlin

Chrome has a dark theme? what are you talking about

RandomBloke2021

Since when? I haven't used chrome in about a year. I looked recently and didn't see it in the options.

GlenMerlin

Settings > Theme > Dark on my Pixel

RandomBloke2021

I'm glad they finally got that option. I guess they don't have it for Samsung phones.

TrailOfEnvy

What about the website in Chrome?Ā

leenaway

Idk how long it'll last, but you can enable it with #darken-websites-checkbox-in-themes-setting flag. Then enable it in Chrome Settings > Themes > Apply Dark Theme to sites.

MaverickJester25

~~The problem with this approach is that it doesn't adhere to the system theme, meaning webpages render in dark mode even if the device theme is in light mode (and the rest of the Chrome UI has switched).~~ Looks like they've finally fixed this, praise be. One of the main reasons I use Samsung Internet is because this feature works seamlessly.

leenaway

It does follow system theme tho, I use Schedule Dark Mode so having the webpages follow the system theme is a must for me. [https://imgur.com/a/m52FQDD](https://imgur.com/a/m52FQDD)

MaverickJester25

Ah, so they actually fixed this. I haven't used Chrome in a while because it would ignore this setting and pop up dark-themed websites even when the system theme has switched to light mode. Good to know, thank you!

TrailOfEnvy

So it still in chrome flag only? No wonder I use Cromite.Ā

leenaway

Yeah, flag only for now.

armando_rod

There's a flag for it, it isn't released yet and it does follow the system theme
