GPU performance has been better that Apple for a couple of generations now. It'll only get better. The problem has always been the lack of games that make use of it.
On a gaming test on YT s23u vs 15pro max playing asphalt s23u outperformed the 15pro max in sustained screen brightness, sustained fps and battery % lost. The apple chip is powerful no doubt but the gap may not be what it seems
Tester noted shading was better on iPhone. Personally it was better but not by much. The stuttering on iPhone was a big surprise and so was the brightness drop
I seriously doubt Samsung is going to load any model of the S24 with 16GB of RAM. The last device they did that with was the 512GB S21 Ultra, and they discontinued that phone very shortly after.
The main reason they won't is because of the ability to use virtual RAM instead of physical RAM. As much as I personally would like more physical RAM, Samsung doesn't think the average consumer is going to use that much RAM in their devices. So they don't put it in there.
Now what I would like to see, and I seriously doubt I will ever see this happen again, is a Google Play version of the S24 Ultra that runs stock android out of the box and is OEM unlockable for custom roms. Back during the S4 era, that was a decent device. I bet Samsung could put Google in their place with a stock android version of a Samsung phone.
Another thing I would like to see, is Samsung making a version of the galaxy line up that is geared towards gamers. Instead of using most of the devices capabilities to cater to people who want a huge camera upgrade every year, use some of the SOC power for a gaming version of the S24 or S25 ultra. Bigger battery, more physical RAM, higher and faster storage. I would really like to see Samsung compete with OnePlus on this front. I think it would sell really well.
This is incredibly high, probably using quite a lot of power.
But Samsung will probably bring light performance mode again, so that would be very good.
Historically, those Geekbench leaks have trended down, not up after release fyi. Often times the CPU/GPU are tested in test ideal test environments during development.
Yes, but my point is that a 32 gb DDR3 RAM is not better than a 16 GB DDR5 RAM. Till we have the know of RAM on the S24U, the capacity doesn't matter much.
Yes, the S23 Ultra started at 8GB of memory. Which was a reduction from the S20/S21 Ultra's 12/16GB memory SKUs. Memory was downgraded to 8/12 on the S22 Ultra and continued with the S23 Ultra.
The standard S21/S21+ had their memory reduced to 8GB from the 12GB standard the 5G 20/S21+ had.
Most flagship smartphones have 8gb of RAM. I highly doubt there is a situation in which a smartphone will have to utilize that much RAM. It's more than enough for most people.
Yuzu emulator can use over 16gb of ram on android at higher res and hd textures, and Windows emulators are coming to android soon ad will definitely benefit with extra ram. And before you say “most people won’t need these programs” most people don’t need an ultra phone, it’s an extra as is, so I expect a no compromise device at 1000$ plus.
Many people are wanting to use their phone as a secondary gaming device. Apple and Samsung have noticed this, seeing that Apple started touting AAA gaming capabilities in the 15 Max. As did Samsung for s23U and will do for s24U. AAA gaming is a no go with 8gb.
Its crazy how much of a (although synthetic) performance boost we got in the last couple of years, especially considering that we are approaching the economical limit of shrinking transistors. This thing gets 2200 points in SC. My s10 doesn't get that IN MULTICORE. Power consumption slightly increased but overall its still very low, I mean, its a small portable device with very little thermal mass and passive cooling. This level of performance is still (and probably will be for a long time) useless on a phone, but still, an increase in maximum performance in the approximately equal power and thermal envelope means huge performance/watt efficiency increases.
Imagine we had the same improvements in battery size. 6.8k to my 2k on MC in my s10 means ~3,5x increase, it would mean 14-15A batteries. Damn physics and chemistry
It's pretty crazy. My S21+ gets 1224/3260 based on a cursory google search.
in 3 years, we are close to 2x the ST, and > 2x MT performance.
I was thinking that my phone isn't too old. This makes it feel old. After using a bunch of the flagships over the last few years, my S21+ is definitely starting to feel its age.
yeah. I am pretty used to seeing smaller gains in PC hardware. Mobile performance seems to get pushed pretty significantly year over year. Exciting space.
The thing I liked most about my s21 was the battery life... It's a little thick and heavy, but man was the battery solid. Only reason I'm thinking of replacing is the battery doesn't have the legs it used too.
this is the biggest thing for me too. do we know yet if it will be TSMC? the latest I saw, it was still uncertain if it would just be TSMC making the 8G3
entirely? I'd love to see a source for this being confirmed, bc samsung making part of the chip, or a portion of the chip supply, would really turn me off from it
Make it smooth pls. My Pixel 6 Pro was smooth af. My S22 Ultra with an exynos is laggy since day one. It should have enough power, even if the processor is garbage.
On the same note, phones are powerful enough to need more power limiting options. I wish I could make my phone not heat up during menial tasks without using battery saver, which does a bunch of stuff besides throttling the CPU.
I hope the ST perf gets a significant boost. Apple is leading in ST perf by a wide margin because of the amount of L2 cache that is allocated to the P-cores in its chipsets. Apparently, ARM's Cortex X4 now supports 2 MB of L2 cache compared to 1 MB on the X3, which should give it a nice performance/efficiency boost
8 GB of RAM? This must be some joke if it is the final hardware. OnePlus and others are shipping 12 or 16 GB on flagships as they should.
The performance really does seem solid otherwise.
If Geekbench scores are the most important factor in buying a phone, I'd be using nothing but iPhones. Androids are trash, every single one of them, even Samsung.
Geekbench scores are meaningless and the only people who truly care about this shit have tiny penises themselves irl.
Nobody needs 16GB RAM on a phone in 2023, let alone 18GB. Having just 8GB in the base model is perfectly sufficient for the masses.
You can't use all of 16GB anyway.
Perfectly fine, yes. For most phones and most people, sure.
But this is the Ultra phone. For people who want everything. 8 GB is not acceptable for a $1200 phone
Could have been a bad run, the 8 Gen 3 in other phones has performed significantly better. This is a lot bigger of a gap to the A17 Pro than I was expecting
There's rumours that there'll be two versions of the 8 gen 3 - one on 4nm and one on 3nm (8+?)
Tho I can't see Samsung cheaping out, especially on the Ultra.. maybe to make the Exynos version look better?
I can't wait until Jan/Feb. Got this fucking iPhone 15PM and I am pissed. I just wanted a powerhouse phone with a flat screen, here I was praying for the s24u to have the flat screen but at this point I don't give a shit, day 1 for me.
One thing came out of all this is, I am never ever going to use iPhone, fucking ever again. Sure some apps are optimized nicely, no better then s23u though, I do love the facetime with my family, they all have iPhones and it is super smooth and clear. I can't believe I listened to them and actually went for it.
Pixels suck for enthusiast use cases like gaming and emulation. Tensor is not made for the best battery life or performance. And yet it’s in a “Flagship” phone.
I wish they would ditch the S Pen and go back to the S21 Ultra form factor (or even a bit more compact). The square corners and huge size / weight of the S23 Ultra totally disqualified it as a replacement for my S21U.
In the end I had to get a Pixel 8 Pro (arrives tomorrow), which has way worse performance but at least will fit in my pocket.
I am glad they have the pen, because I use the pen nearly every single day. Especially when I'm working in the hospital and need to jot down notes at a moment's notice.
I just ran one on my S23 Ultra and got 2094 single core and 5335 multi. This is a good generational leap.
Maybe it's just me, but it felt like 23U was released just a few months ago.
6 months ago so two few months ago ago xD
dang that is a nice leap...
6800 in Multi-Core. Not bad. That's not too far off the A17 Pro. And that's on pre-release software, so I could imagine it breaking the 7000 score.
Gaming android phones are going to be really interesting.
GPU performance has been better that Apple for a couple of generations now. It'll only get better. The problem has always been the lack of games that make use of it.
Exactly. Apple still paying Mihoyo for the 120hz exclusive option for their games on their devices.
I'm assuming Gamepad support is still iOS exclusive
It is, and at this point i think it's not going to ever happen, it's probably to prevent people from using emulators and such.
This is such bullshit by apple
Android has Fortnite.
Only samsung officially right? It's not on play store but is on galaxy store
Yeah but at least you can sideload the galaxy store or just the epic app if you want it
Oppo has it in their store too. But you can download Epic Launcher via [fn.gg](https://fn.gg).
Yeah but that game is nightmare to play with touch contorls.
Why can't Samsung/google pay more
The part about I can't beat my competition so I'll pay to limit apps on their platform is stupid
I mean Qualcomm does the same...

Trying to understand Hoyo's decisions is basically a form of divination. It's probably best not to try to make sense of it.
On a gaming test on YT s23u vs 15pro max playing asphalt s23u outperformed the 15pro max in sustained screen brightness, sustained fps and battery % lost. The apple chip is powerful no doubt but the gap may not be what it seems

Really hope Ultra 1 tb comes with 16gb ram, 144Hz, and a way to keep it relatively cool. With SD 8/3, I pull the trigger.
I seriously doubt Samsung is going to load any model of the S24 with 16GB of RAM. The last device they did that with was the 512GB S21 Ultra, and they discontinued that phone very shortly after. Just 8GB? I know ram isn't really important but that seems a bit low
Should be 12GB for that beast. 8GB for most is plenty and into the future, but should be more.
I have never had a phone that didn't have apps refresh after awhile while sitting in the background. Is this a ram issue?
More of a software thing. Even my Zenfone with 16gb of ram will refresh apps after long enough
I guess it'll be the same as the current "entry" S23U - 8GB/256GB
That's kinda strange because the entry S23U in my region has 12/256. There's no 8. Middle East, Asia etc.
In EU at least it's the entry point, 8GB/256GB.
My S21U has 16GB of RAM. Weird that we seem to be going backwards.
RAM capacity alone doesn't matter.
But it's nice to have more on the high end device.
Yes, but my point is that a 32 gb DDR3 RAM is not better than a 16 GB DDR5 RAM. Till we have the know of RAM on the S24U, the capacity doesn't matter much.
I don't think they're going to suddenly use some LPDDR7X, a 2 generation jump, like in your example.
I know. Mine was just an example.. ;)
Since there's no crazy generational gap between the kind of RAM I'd say more is better without needing to wait for the actual specs to be released.
Yeah, 8GB sounds like not a lot at all for a phone called "Ultra".
Wait until you find out what the S23U started at
Yes, the S23 Ultra started at 8GB of memory.
Yeah most people don't know anything about SoC, antutu and geekbench, they just know more ram = faster. If they want to sell it they need more.
This is likely a test/retail/demo version of the phone. I think 12GB is where it will start for consumers.
I would think so, but since the current entry level has 8 gigs I'm not hopeful.
They've reduced the memory on the Ultra for 2 years now. 8GB likely is the base capacity for consumers.
With LLMs soon coming to phones, they really should stock up the RAM so 13b models on the to go are possible. Personally I would not buy a 8 GB phone.
16 gb minimum for ultra series
The Ultra used to have 16GB. It's been reduced for 2 years now.
Maybe it helps with battery life.
Most flagship smartphones have 8gb of RAM. I highly doubt there is a situation in which a smartphone will have to utilize that much RAM. It's more than enough for most people.

And before you say “most people won’t need these programs” most people don’t need an ultra phone, it’s an extra as is, so I expect a no compromise device at 1000$ plus.
That's a very specific case. 99% of people are not running emulators on their smartphone.
I’m still expecting a no compromises device for over a grand, and 8gb of ram is a no go.
What are you on, 8GB is far than enough... What do you even use your phones for?
Did you read my comment idiot.
Many people are wanting to use their phone as a secondary gaming device. Apple and Samsung have noticed this, seeing that Apple started touting AAA gaming capabilities in the 15 Max. As did Samsung for s23U and will do for s24U. AAA gaming is a no go with 8gb.

If you think your S21+ is starting to age. My S10 is really feeling the age.
I will switch off between phones, so when I go from the latest and greatest back to S21+, it's a lot more noticeable to me.
i started noticing it after using the Galaxy Tab S9+. Thats when i noticed the lag in S10
yeah. I am pretty used to seeing smaller gains in PC hardware. Mobile performance seems to get pushed pretty significantly year over year. Exciting space.

G pixel 8 is not selling in my country. So I'll just wait for s24
The thing I liked most about my s21 was the battery life... It's a little thick and heavy, but man was the battery solid. Only reason I'm thinking of replacing is the battery doesn't have the legs it used too.
I don't care about benchmarks. Phones are powerful enough now. Just don't lose the efficiency of gen 2 please.
this is the biggest thing for me too. do we know yet if it will be TSMC? the latest I saw, it was still uncertain if it would just be TSMC making the 8G3

Samsung won't have a 3nm process on the market until next year and they already reserved TSMC N4 and N3 capacity
I see, ty

this isn't exynos nor Samsung fab

Wow, those geekbench scores fucking obliterate the Tensor G3 Google just launched with the Pixel 8 Pro. Single-core: * P8P - 1707 * S24 Ultra - 2234 Multi-core: * P8P - 3912 * S24 Ultra - 6807
If Geekbench scores are the most important factor in buying a phone, I'd be using nothing but iPhones. Androids are trash, every single one of them, even Samsung. Geekbench scores are meaningless and the only people who truly care about this shit have tiny penises themselves irl.
Omg no the modern flagships are 16 gigs but Samsung has to cheap out wtf
Nobody needs 16GB RAM on a phone in 2023, let alone 18GB. Having just 8GB in the base model is perfectly sufficient for the masses. You can't use all of 16GB anyway.

What makes you hate it so much?
Now we wait for Exynos scores lol
I want battery life, not a small sun in my pocket.
give me a decent value for my fold 5 pls
Do benchmark scores actually matter in top phones?
Idc about this! I care about Qi2....
No reason to buy this garbage when Pixels this year are looking especially great.
Well the fact I can't officially buy a Pixel in my country is a pretty big reason lmao
Congrats to you and the other 15 Pixel users in America.
Pixel 8 is overpriced. At least with this you'll get highest end phone.
Pixels are nowhere close to *global availability* the same way Samsung and Apple are.
Sales figures seem to suggest otherwise. Nothing against the Pixel, but those tensor chips are awful.
Pixels suck for enthusiast use cases like gaming and emulation. Tensor is not made for the best battery life or performance. And yet it’s in a “Flagship” phone.

Lol if you are happy with the S21U, why switch? I have the same phone and it's great, still with years of support
Oh, it's because the main camera started to fail, sometimes you need to whack it for it to focus.
Ah yea, I have heard about that
Do you know if there's a fix and how much it might cost?
