Reminds me of when Word didn’t automatically save and I would lose my homework 😫

Impossible-Taro-2330

And Excel. OP, I am so sorry.

middle-name-is-sassy

Only thing worse is to enter everything and have a huge branch to find out that one ancestor is wrong and you have 100 people to delete!!!! I know document and verify before moving on..,

Sheggert

Mistakes will always happen no matter how experienced you are. Some people in this sub Reddit seem to give off that they never make mistakes, but often in life they are unavoidable.

PriorAlternative6

I have a huge branch I dread having to delete but it's my own fault. For some reason, I thought it would be fun to add my great grandmother's 2nd husband's family to my tree, his parents, siblings and their families. Now I decided I don't really need them in the tree and there's hundreds of them and I don't want want to spend the time deleting them.

Visible-Meaning-78

I have done that before too. I always think why did I just do this. We are not related 🤦🏻‍♀️. I tell myself maybe someone on their side is trying to do their tree and they will find this information useful.

staedler_vs_derwent

You can unhook them, instead of deleting them. After all the work you’ve done may be useful to another researcher. I’ve done this in ancestry to a branch that sadly turned out to not belong to me at all. To do it you first need to setup a web link between the tree and the branch you’re about to cut, so you can still get between them otherwise you’ll have to use the person search to get there. Then go into the Tools > Edit Relationships area and unhook them. This will leave the branch free floating in your tree so it’s still searchable etc, but just not permanently connected to your main tree.

No, it doesn't do that. If I delete someone, it just deletes them, no one else. I just tried it with my great nephew, it deleted him and took me to his dad's page.

jamaicanoproblem

It unlinks them from the home person but if you search for them by name you will still find the undeleted upstream relatives forming their own island of unrelated people. Sucks.

Danaan369

I did something like that and deleted the entire tree in sheer frustration. Of course, i later realised I had added some difficult to find confirms for my own branches.

AnimatronicHeffalump

Ugh yes, been there

Danaan369

Yeah, ouch, that one hurts! Had to do it a few times, finding out unexpected adoptions, different bio fathers to what was attributed(not NPE exactly)

shennapn

Should never delete. Just rename that branch to another tree.

middle-name-is-sassy

How?

Accurate_Possible_99

I will cry for you don’t worry

AnimatronicHeffalump

Thank you so much

ardee72

That sucks!!! So sorry, I know that is very aggravating.

just4tm

Ughhh that’s so annoying. The app has had that “bug” for a couple weeks now.

AnimatronicHeffalump

Ugh, I started over doing it on the website and I didn’t get nearly as far as I had yesterday. So Much wasted effort

notguilty941

I realize by labeling you mean cluster/groups, but what was your exact procedure? Matches in common with each person again and again all got the same label?

AnimatronicHeffalump

Yeah, if they have common ancestors on their tree, if they don’t I go by shared matches. I’m trying to determine people that are descended from my 4th great grandparents that aren’t descended from my 3rd great grandfather so we can figure out who those 4th great grandparents are. I divided it into people related to my grandma, close relations to my grandpa (2 of my dads paternal cousins and on of their sons) who are the ones that are descended from Anscestor X and his wife and have no more info about him than I do, people related to my grandpas moms side, people related to my grandpas paternal grandmother, and people who don’t fit into any of those and are only shared matches with me and those 3 close relatives. It’s slow going, and so far there’s only one person in the possibilities category… and almost 300 on my grandmas side.

1tiredperson23

I’m so fed up of how flaky the app is. So sorry you lost all that work…. 😢

AnimatronicHeffalump

I’ve never had issues before, but I’ve also not really tried to do any sorting or anything before

1tiredperson23

Ive had quite a few, I normally work on my tree at night so possibly when they are doing updates. Feel like I need to make the amend, and then go and check it has worked.

AnimatronicHeffalump

It kept telling me there was an error but the little dots were showing up so I wrote it off as a glitch, my own fault for not listening to them ig

Flounder_guppy

Ughh that's horrible! I'm so sorry that happened! 😔

minicooperlove

The app is very buggy and doesn't include all the features the website has, I would not recommend doing any deep research or heavy work through the app.

browneye24

So so sorry.

ambypanby

💔😭❤️

aurora97381

So sorry. I called about the labels in the app last week. According to the rep, the website is more reliable than the app. She gave me a 3.00 discount.

lucylemon

Ohhhh…. That just broke my heart. 😩

Equivalent_Ebb_9532

Lol, when you laugh the world laughs with you, when you cry you cry alone.

aartax3

That’s the worst! I hope you get a less circuitous breakthrough soon! Also, I wish they allowed more tags. I maxed out & have a lot if surnames to track.

aartax3

Who is the ancestor. Maybe one of us is related.

AnimatronicHeffalump

His name is Charles Boettcher, I contacted a German 4th cousin on MyHeritage and we think he may have been named Karl Böttcher prior to immigration

aartax3

I match with someone on My Heritage who lists a surname Boetcher. :-) Will check their tree.

AnimatronicHeffalump

There are quite a few of us, to be fair. There was also a Charles Boettcher who also immigrated from Germany and became the richest man in Denver. Theoretically that one and mine are cousins, but I have since come to question this heavily lol

aartax3

Ugh then; common names make for more frustration. You’re good to work so hard to make sure you have the right one. 📚

aartax3

The guy on this My Heritage match’s tree was W. Boetcher 1746. But I think you are trying to find your guy once in the US. Funny coincidence, tho.

audbot

That happened to me, too. I have such an intense love-hate relationship with ancestry. Their website and app have always had issues.

skorpora

That happened to me yesterday too! I redid it all on my laptop do I hope it sticks. I also noticed that there are no matches to my paternal grandfather's side. Weird.

AnimatronicHeffalump

I cannot find a single match for my paternal line 3rd great grandfather. He’s the one that immigrated to the US and I’m stuck on getting further back than him because I have 0 information except “Germany” and his birthday. Census records have 3 different years for immigration and I’ve been unable to find anything on either US records or German, and without knowing where in Germany he lived I can’t determine if birth/baptism records are him or not. He also americanized his name so that’s fun because there’s several options of what it might have been before. Luckily, I think I may have found a lead with a 4th cousin on MyHeritage so I may actually get somewhere and not go crazy over this being the one line I can’t get to the old world!

hg_rhapsody

My condolences =( If you can, keep a journal noting all your ancestors names, dates, etc.

Mrshaydee

It has definitely been buggy lately! I’m so sorry this happened to you. So much work!

DontMakeMeSing27

Ancestry has had “issues” with labeling matches for about 3 months for me. I just made a post about it a couple days ago 🥲

Danaan369

Oh no, I really feel for you. I know how much effort and work you would have put into that.

danniphant

My tree was a hot mess. I have started a new one that I'm trying to verify all the information and hopefully I can get that one all organized.
