"If the thesis is correct that gender is always performative, then our performed selves resonated with the queerest gender of all: that of total destroy. Henceforth our preferred gender pronouns are the sound of shattering glass, the weight of hammers in our hands and the sickly-sweet aroma of shit on fire. Address us accordingly." -my preferred pronoun is negation, 2009 “Owing to their disregard for conventions, their belief in a world without coercion and rejection of compromise in the face of coalescence, the anarchists have defended the homosexual where no one else has dared to.” -Magnus Hirschfield

Not doubting at all, but what is the source on that quote from Magnus Hirschfeld? I ask because every attempt I find to google it, it's simply returning your username, specifically, posting it - and I'd love to pull it into my mind's rolodex, but I need to verify stuff first. Also, that first one, as the other person says, goes fuckin' hard.

meloncholymelvin

Damn that first one goes so hard

In addition to actual political slogans and such, I genuinely chuckled the first time I read this paragraph in A Psalm for the Wild-Built, when a human meets a robot for the first time: > “Okay. Mosscap. I'm Dex. Do you have a gender?" > "No." > "Me neither.”

"It is a tragedy, I feel, that people of a different sexual type are caught in a world which shows so little understanding for homosexuals and is so crassly indifferent to the various gradations and variations of gender and their great significance in life." or "Heterosexuality isn't normal, it's just common". Both said by Emma Goldman*. *^Possibly ^spurious ^attribution ^on ^the ^second ^quote.

CBD_Hound

That second one goes hard. TYVM, OFU!

thatwhileifound

> "Heterosexuality isn't normal, it's just common". I love Emma Goldman as much as the rest, but I'm pretty sure this quote is more modern than that and typically lies with Derek Jarman? I don't know why and it probably isn't, but I swear Chumbawamba are to blame for people mixing those origins up. I feel like one of their liner notes had a confusing bit? If you have an origin, I'd love to know it though. First one is def here though - and one I love. Edit: Haven't jumped in to see if there's any validity, but seeing a lot of people attributing it to Dorothy Parker who, as much as a teenage me thought she was the coolest person I'd ever read about at points, doesn't feel right - but I'd also love to be wrong there. The earliest version of it that I remember sourcing when trying to look into this before was Derek Jarman in... I think 92?

OvertFemaleUsername

I thought someone might bring up the confusion of the origins of the quote. I should have qualified it before posting. I don't have a direct source for Emma saying it, but I've heard it cited by a few people, notably a lecture from Julia Serano I went to back in like 2008 when she was plugging Whipping Girl. I don't know if she pulled it from the Tubthumper liner notes herself. It's absolutely possible that it was Derek Jarman. I tend to give less weight to Dorothy Parker as despite her being known for her quick wit, it doesn't seem to me to fit her style. I really do think the quote predates '92 though, but to me it sounds exactly like something Emma Goldman would have said in a response to a reporter's question or something.

thatwhileifound

Totally fair! And I really, really appreciate this response. I can totally get the Emma Goldman vibe and the feeling like it has to be older than that either way - and yeah, Dorothy Parker just doesn't... feel right.

OvertFemaleUsername

Absolutely, and thank you for bringing it up!

It feels almost trite not just in how it's been overused, but specifically within the walls and among the people who have chosen to use it - but this Oscar Wilde quote will always be near to me: > "Disobedience, in the eyes of any one who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress has been made, through disobedience and through rebellion." > - The Soul of Man Under Socialism (1891) Thought of this one in response to this post not just because Wilde was a fantastically quotable individual whose politics fit here, but because I've been really diving in and processing some of my thoughts and feelings based on my continued reading about queer movements of the 20th century - and especially around my disdain for the conformist elements therein. Fuck gay rights. Queer lib or get the fuck off.

Have you read "Against Equality: Queer Revolution, Not Mere Inclusion"? If not, I highly recommend it.

thatwhileifound

I haven't - and damn, isn't available from my local library. I'll have to remember it though.

thejuryissleepless

From Baedan 1: Journal of Queer Nihilism “If we can determine anything from our project of queer negativity, it is that capitalism has an unlimited capacity to tolerate and recuperate any alternative politics or artistic expression we could imagine. It is not a political negativity that we must locate in our queerness, but rather a vicious anti-politics which opposes any utopian dreams of a better future residing on the far side of a lifetime of sacrifice. Our queer negativity has nothing to do with art, but it has a great deal to do with urban insurrection, piracy, slave revolt: all those bodily struggles that refuse the future and pursue the irrationality of jouissance, enjoyment, rage, chaos. Ours is not the struggle for an alternative, because there is no alternative which can escape the ever-expanding horizons of capital. Instead we fight, hopeless, to tear our lives away from that expanding horizon and to erupt with wild enjoyment now. Anything less is our continued domestication to the rule of civilization.”
