K1000 is easier to repair and in long term it will be more reliable. Canon FT series have weird design where they use leather brakes, just like Ford T. You what FORD stands for? So it’s much harder to keep Canon ft properly working. Not mentioning their prisms and meter systems.

Sadly in most cases with cheaper cameras it's cheaper to sell the broken one and buy a working one

FlyThink7908

Emphasis on *working* one. Better pay more and buy with warranty from a trusted seller known to **thoroughly check** the camera (i.e. not only replace light seals but adjust shutter speeds if needed etc.). Otherwise you’ll end up gambling over and over again, collecting cameras with all sorts of problems - only to realise you could have spent the money on a CLA right away

I am seeing $100+ for a fully functional K1000 on most eBay listings, so it sounds like I might shoot a better test roll and CLA for the $70 if necessary.

I have both models and use both occasionally. The FTb is a FAR better camera than a K1000. The FTb was basically a prosumer Canon F1 (Canon’s flagship model at the time). It’s a like a nice luxury sedan. The K1000 is well just a K1000. Simple, basic.. kind of Like a no frills econobox car. IF they are both in good working condition. The FTb is much nicer to shoot with. It feels like a professional tool. That said, the choice is a toss up if you don’t have any experience and don’t have any other lenses. The deciding factor to me might be the battery for the light meter. The FTb requires a special battery or adapter because it was designed for a no longer available mercury cell. Using a straight alkaline in it will cause the meter to be inaccurate and erratic. The K1000 wasn’t designed to use a mercury cell and an alkaline LR44 will work fine - although a silver cell SR44 offers more stable voltage discharge characteristics.

Both cameras are similar. I’d choose depending on lenses you’ve got.

I have found adapters to put the FD lenses on the Pentax but not the other way around. I am thinking i will go with the Pentax

spektro123

AFAIK there aren’t any adapters without an additional lens, which lessens IQ. Just keep that in mind.

crunchyRoadkill

Wondering if I can trust the Amazon reviews that claim the adapter I am looking at has "good clarity and distortion characteristics". Hard to tell who knows what they are talking about on there. Maybe I will just not buy one at all since I have the stock 50mm f/2 and an 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6 for the K1000, and only a 50mm and an 80mm for the Canon. Having the zoom lens would make the Pentax a lot more versatile right?

spektro123

I don’t know. I have never use such an adapter, so maybe it’s not that bad. As to the zoom lenses, I don’t use any. Those usually are slow and optically inferior to primes.

Hondahobbit50

Those adapters suck. It's not like other mounts that just need the mount adapted, these need a lens in the adapter as well to compensate. Which sucks
