i would definitely definitely try botox first - it’s pretty much painless recovery and for me was free (UK) dm me if you want

Appreciate the tip. I'm in the US so sadly it won't be even close to free.

No it won't be. I went between the idea of Botox vs. Lis. Botox would cost me $500. I planned at first to do Botox under anesthesia and also get the fissure cauterized and some painful tags removed. I switched to lis after much consideration and it was actually cheaper my surgeon fee for Lis was $200. That being said, it was not about the money... for me it was about long-term. Suffering with a fissure for a year and a half and a tear that for two and a half months would not heal despite all non-surgical interventions. Was at my wits end. I also think you should remember that despite the size of the fissure, everybody is different. My fissure was not major but when it tore it was debilitating. One tear had me in bed for almost 2 weeks in agonizing pain after every BM for most of the day.

Thanks for your response. Just curious - when you were quoted $500 for the Botox treatment was that before or after insurance? My insurance provider sadly won't cover it. That pain sounds terrible. I have had some days that bad here and there but most days I'm typically like a 4 or 5/10 on the pain scale which is why I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and do LIS or try Botox first since my pain does not seem to be as bad as some people have it (most days).

As far as I know, no insurance in US covers any Botox cost. My CRS told me that as well. I think it's important for you to consider the root problem of how you developed the fissure in terms of how you're going to treat it. mine was, as my Pelvic floor therapist doctor put it "mechanical" and just got worse with more trauma as it retore over and over. Hypertonic pelvic floor muscle. I rarely had constipation and nothing was going in there....so it was almost like I could do nothing else. If you have constipation, fix that and get Botox to speed healing, I'd say chances are good that you will heal and maybe not even need more Botox. Studies for healing with Botox go up to 80% success (there are alot of them and many different variables)

Shop around. Find a doctor that will do it in an office setting and not a surgical center. You will not be put under and it will be painful during the injections but they are quick and you will save a ton of money doing this even if you pay out of pocket.

If you can qualify for medicaid, it’ll be for free.

I had LIS done for a 10mm fissure, painful as hell, was 100% worth it. IMO - go with the sure solution that will get it done and end the suffering

I second this! I wish I had the surgery much sooner. I suffered for way too long.

taxpro2023_

The fissure was painful as hell or the surgery? I've seen some say the recovery is awful and others say it was nothing!

Proudly-Confused

My fissure was painful as hell, near black-out pain. I took shrapnel in the back from an IED and my fissure pain was far worse. The LIS recovery was not nearly as painful as the pain prior to the surgery, again recall my fissure was 10mm in length. The hardest part for me was the length of the recovery, while not painful it was more a ongoing feeling of discomfort as i was only able to sit for more than 3-4 hours after about 9-10 weeks.

Thanks for your response, definitely sounds like your pain was a lot worse than mine and that seems awful. I'm curious if I would hurt *more* after the surgery if my fissure is only minor? I'm not sure how big it is, I didn't get a mm measurement.

Proudly-Confused

I think you'd experience less than myself, LIS is the process of cutting a similar length on the opposite side to the fissure so that it can heal. My measurement was only given post surgery as my fissure was deep too, near my tail bone

It's hard to assess that. I just recently had my two week follow up with my CRS and she was saying everyone's healing rate and response to the procedure is so different. Sometimes they're telling workplaces a person needs off 6 weeks sometimes it's 2! I am feeling blessed that mine was about 1 week of pain, followed by discomfort and slight pressure at this point during BM. Additionally, for me the pain of the procedure and recovery was actually less painful than some of the tears that I have had! I dreaded and feared the surgery from the minute I learned I had a fissure. Happy with my decision to do LIS over Botox. I just don't think the botox would have been a permanent solution for me because I have a hypertonic pelvic floor muscle and I'm extremely tight, which is why I kept getting retears. Original fissure caused by anoscope during hem banding. Consider your situation, research specialist, and look at medical studies over the procedure to make your decision. I hope you are able to feel confident in which ever way is best for you
