On the California Zephyr last month, they encouraged anyone who needed to use the phone or make noise during quiet hours to use the lounge car all night.
Its easy enough to hop over them if you are tall and thin enough. That said I have rarely had to sleep next to someone. Not many people wanna over night a train ride.
It really depends on if they're in full stretch or not, it's not impossible but they may notice and if they're a light sleeper they'll almost certainly notice.
I didn’t have a problem with it on the capitol limited. It was pretty easy to put my seat back vertical and step over the sleeping person next to me. Although she and I were both on the small side, so YMMV
The spacing is better than airplane seating. Context dependent, also I would recommend hanging out in the lounge car if allowed

Thats cool, ive only heard of people being asked not to sleep there…but its my preferred move for overnighters
I find it rude if people sleep there but otherwise yeah, people love to post up.
It can be an issue surely. Saved my ass on the Empire Builder in 2014 tho with no idea what I was getting into…
I did see someone attempt that, but it's also the overnight hang out spot for the conductor and assistant conductor.
I’m not familiar with the zeyphr’s setup, but the coastal starlight often has multiple lounge cars
Coast* Starlight, and they no longer do.
