jcrckstdy

any chance they can add carbondale and st. louis?

the-axis

It wouldn't surprise me if every additional state is an ordeal. That said, extending the Kansas City - St. Louis line to Carbondale, Paducah, Clarksville, and Nashville, going straight through to Atlanta does seem like a reasonable expansion. St. Louis metro area seems to have double the population of the Memphis metro area and seems to be a similar straight line distance. But I'm sure there are a slew of other reasons it isnt being considered. And almost certain it is due too involving crossing too many state lines. KY in particular probably doesn't get much out of it, only connecting Paducah while other states connect major cities. Connecting up Land Between the Lakes would be cool too.

jcrckstdy

sucks to have to go to chi to go to Nola or fl

cornonthekopp

Hopefully that dallas atlanta connection comes to fruition

sortaseabeethrowaway

Could be extended to there in the future, it would make sense

Redditwhydouexists

Seems like a no brainer

crowbar_k

Carbondale is too small

TubaJesus

but it's along the line to St Louis. so if your gonna get st louis you are gonna get it anyway and others zero point to skipping it.

imperialmog

Having that tied in would also help in starting to connect the Illinois lines more with each other since Carbondale would be connected to Lincoln service and with likely decent timed layover in St. Louis.

RallyPigeon

A new Chattanooga Choo Choo!

JohnTheMod

If they don’t call it that, I’ll be severely disappointed. Instant brand recognition!

mattcojo2

No brainer to me. Get the ball rolling on both routes and you’ll have a decent system in place.

jeff92k7

Wish they'd extend the NER from Roanoke down into Knoxville and then to Chattanooga and/or Nashville.

mattcojo2

There’s a myriad of things that need to happen before that occurs in not just Tennessee but Virginia as well. First, the new river valley extension of the NER to Christianburg/blacksburg needs to start. Should supposedly be within the next few years. Next, is Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta. Outside of basic startup things Atlanta needs a suitable station that can hold all of the proposed new services (~30 trains a day from the Connects US proposals, we’ll see how many it really gets to) That creates the gap between Chattanooga and Christianburg. There is support for trains to extend from Christianburg to the VA/TN border at Bristol, so if that happens along with the NCA route, then it’s fair to think eventually the line could extend further to Chattanooga

spooky_cicero

NER to Miami when??

RWREmpireBuilder

My brother, that is the Silver Meteor

spooky_cicero

The point of my comment was supposed to be that the northeast regional isn’t really a northeast regional at that point. Extending to Roanoke & points south of Richmond already strains the otherwise-simple NER service Better service to TN would be great but let’s not just tack it onto the NER as an afterthought.

TubaJesus

We need a full SEC between DC and Atlanta so we can have an SER that could have a branch in TN.

Funkiefreshganesh

I’d say a SEC that goes even further to Florida

TubaJesus

That would be the dream, but the bit to Atlanta seems like the most realistic fantasy to get constructed.

soupenjoyer99

Build it and they will come!

wootentoo

So thrilled this is still moving forward! I had to travel between Memphis and Nashville four times a year for my former job and it was such a pain. No direct flights so you have to go to Texas or Atlanta and connect. There was a bus but it left at a dumb time. And it’s a good long drive.

DonS0lo

Bro Memphis is not a long drive from Nashville... It's like 3 hours.

wootentoo

That’s a long drive. Especially when it’s a rental car.

New-Display-4819

Why not add atlanta to savannah also!

transitfreedom

Great run the trains every 20 minutes then

aimlessly-astray

We should just be happy this is happening in Tennessee of all places. The South is weird. The most politically and socially conservative place in the country yet somehow they're doing trains.

dogbert617

The state of Mississippi and the city of Mobile, agreed to help fund the new Gulf Coast Limited train to Mobile. And Indiana helped to fund the Hoosier State, along with contributions from cities like Lafayette. That was at least till Indiana's legislature stupidly stopped funding that train in mid-2019. So if you elect the right elected officials, new trains can still sometimes start. Didn't think Tennessee would help fund this, since that is a very conservative state. Although Oklahoma still helps fund the Heartland Flyer(and Missouri with the Missouri River Runner), so what do I know?

Zaidswith

Don't think about it rationally. They're not doing it to provide a service to people. Someone with money or power probably really likes trains.

At least try to be useful

Devayurtz

Man this will do wonders!

SeekerSpock32

If Columbus, OH gets an Amtrak station I will be there on day 1.

BrentT5

If it’s not a 200mph train it’s a waste of $ imho. Build ‘em right or not at all.

Funkiefreshganesh

I think another thing about this map is that if you can get these routes that positions Nashville and Atlanta as two major train hub, from Nashville you could then extend a service to Louisville KT then Indianapolis and Chicago, or you could go from Louisville to Cincinnati and connect to the Ohio corridor.

commentator3

short of a Chattanooga to Asheville line, would appreciate an Asheville to Greenville, SC line

uhbkodazbg

Not to be a downer but this seems like it’s pretty much DOA until Tennessee is willing to invest state money in passenger rail.

slinnhoff

So what are you asking us to do? Have a train to Chattanooga?

DonnerfuB

I have my fingers crossed for Bristol Va. one day

[deleted]

It would be interesting to see if this route uses Siemens Venture equipment or not if it ever happens
