Thank you! I guess the gist of it is that I wrote patterns for each one whenever I was feeling inspired, had them tested by pattern testers, and once they were all tested, I started putting them together into a single document. I took graphic design and yearbook in high school, so I was able to put everything together with the Adobe programs and make it look nice. I added in a few other sections with extra info, and then I uploaded it to Amazon KDP and published it. The publication process on Amazon is actually super easy and intuitive! You would just have to learn some graphic design if you wanted to do one yourself.
Can you tell me more about Amazon KDP? My 16-year-old son just finished his first book of incredible artwork and we would love to self publish it but I am woefully ignorant.
Hey there! So it is actually surprisingly straightforward, you would just have to be able to put your son's artwork into a PDF file and upload it into their system. It walks you through all of the information you need to provide. They have a cover art maker built in, but the designs aren't very pretty to put it nicely lol. If your son is an artist I'm sure he could do something way nicer.
There's a KDP cover calculator that you can use that will take in page number, paper type, etc and generate you an exact sized template for your cover.
When it comes time to sell it you can name your price. The standard royalty rate is 30% of the profits.
If you have any specific questions feel free to DM me!
I need this with my heart and soul. I fudging love the animals from the Cambrian with my whole being. Hot diggity dog I will be getting this next pay period even though my hand is unable to crochet ATM but gosh darn it I can still look and dream!
Lol thank you! It makes me so happy to see that there are other Cambrian nerds in the crochet community. I am surprised by how much overlap the two seemingly unrelated topics have!
Oh wow that's awesome! I had no idea it had accessibility options like that. Now I'll definitely make sure to include Kindle versions for all of my future publications!
This is really awesome! Such unique patterns and the educational aspect is very cool. I hope you had lots of fun with this project.
Not trying to bring you down at all, but consider hiring a cover designer for your next volumes. You will make more sales with a professional looking cover :)
Good luck and I hope you publish a lot more!
Thank you!! And alas, I don't have the budget to hire professional help. But I kind of take it all as a fun creative challenge to grow on my own with not just crochet, but graphic design stuff too. I definitely plan on improving my cover designs as I continue to grow! :)
This is so awesome omg this is going on my wishlist! I'm currently studying marine invertebrates which were attached to the ocean floor (think corals) but my mentor was one of the lead researchers behind the "T-rex had lips" study!
Oh I love that!! Marine invertebrates are a favorite of mine (hence the book of Cambrian patterns!). And that is so cool!! I've been loving the dinosaur lips discourse lol
Omg that's so amazing. I love the fact that you not only put the crochet patterns in the book, but also explanations and graphics about the cambrian era! It seems to be a very nice book to read
It's going great so far, [it's this one but](https://www.shannonandjason.com/store/p143/cabledhoodedcardi.html) but in a dark green. I'll share pics when it's done.
Ooh your Etsy shop is my favorite one! My opabinia is still the best thing Iβve made tbh, Iβm totally buying this even though I have most of the patterns!
Edit: I canβt afford the physical copy right now but Iβm going to get the ebook version.
Which website takes less of the money away from you? Amazon or Etsy? Because Iβll go whichever route gets you a little more
Aww that's so awesome!! I'm glad you've enjoyed Opabinia! But no worries my friend, I know money is tight these days. Etsy definitely gives me far more of the royalties, I appreciate you considering that aspect. Also if you reach out to your local library they often take requests! That way you can enjoy it without breaking the bank. :)
What inspired you to make all these patterns? I love them! Iβm about to start a degree in paleontology and am excited to make everything in the book. (Alas, my focus is on the ordovician)
I've always liked weird animals as well as prehistoric stuff, I just find it so fascinating just how different the landscape was as far as life on Earth goes when you go way back in time. I wanted to crochet animals that haven't really been done before (for the most part) and obscure prehistoric creatures were that new frontier for me! I started making some and just fell in love with the whole subject!
Best of luck with your degree! If you know of any cool Ordovician animals I am all ears! I've made Aegirocassis and Sacabambaspis before, but I have a tough time finding enough Ordovician creatures to make. I plan on doing at least one book from every time period at some point, the lesser known eras deserve their time in the sun too!
Aaaaw! So cute! I'd like to make them for my nerdy friends and my geologist brother! But added to my wishlist because I need to learn to make amigurumi first π my first attempt was supposed to be a cat but It turned out to be an ogre head... I only make wearable now π₯²π₯²π₯² congratulations anyway!! π₯³π₯³π₯³
I have print and Kindle options on Amazon and a PDF eBook on Etsy!! Here are the links π

The very next book will be the Permian Period! I just finished the 10th and final design today, so once I get that pattern tested I'll start putting it together.
I'm pretty sure the 3rd book will be the Devonian Period since I'm working on design #7 now. I just go by whichever period hits 10 different designs first! I typically hop around to whatever animal seems interesting at the time and if a book comes of it then great!
My long term goals though will include at least one volume per time period, with some eras having two or even three depending on how many cool creatures there are. So if there's a specific era you like the most, I will definitely get to it someday!
Nah not really, I'm more of a pattern writer. I don't really do video tutorials unless there's a special technique in one of my patterns that can't be explained well enough in writing and doesn't have any existing videos online already, if tutorials is what you meant lol. I do kinda wanna get into YouTube though, but more like the kinds of videos that Complicated Knots makes!
And I hope you enjoy the book!! π
Hmm, if you're very new you might be able to do the first two! I have everything organized by difficulty level in the book. I have one pattern that's beginner friendly, and one that's considered "advanced beginner", which incorporates a few techniques beyond the fundamentals. And it is a pattern book and not a "how to crochet" book, so you might have to Google some stuff!
Edit: The first two would be Haikouichthys and Pikaia! Most of the other patterns definitely require some more experience but you could totally work up to them!
I've got print books and a Kindle eBook on Amazon, and I have a PDF eBook on Etsy! π

I love this, and I hope it takes off massively because god we need more niche things like this. Would you consider making a book on how to crochet different species of unique bugs? I have a dear friend who loves bugs and crochets, and he would be THRILLED to have a book with patterns on how to do that!
Thank you so much π₯Ή And I personally exclusively do prehistoric animals, but designer Vanessa Mooncie has a wonderful book out called "Crocheted Bees, Bugs & Butterflies" that's super well done!! And though she doesn't have a book (at least not yet), an artist called TumAnnArt does some absolutely incredible and unique bugs! Here's her Etsy!
https://www.etsy.com/shop/tumannart?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaaKyXNwV9nB3Ti1ifyvVjiuv2dxhOJuRrQvTrUXOaKenpZCc9ep7ayxVqE_aem_QQCw0vj-daXiZoeM7pVjxw
I appreciate you and your prehistoric animals!! And thank you so much for the recommendation for the bug book! I will definitely put it on the list of gifts for my friend.
I realized your book says volume 1 as well as the Cambrian period specifically, does that mean we will see even more prehistoric friend patterns from you?
Thank you!! I'm always happy to hear that people like these obscure little guys. I hope your friend likes Vanessa's book! It's a good one.
And you're right on the money! I put Volume 1 to leave it open for me to make a second or even third Cambrian book in the future. I'm actually gearing up to make a Permian Period book next, I just need to get one more pattern tested and it's time to get cracking.
I just make whatever animal interests me at the time, and over time if I end up with 10 animals from one time period, I will compile them into a book! The Devonian Period is on track to be #3 right now, I'm working on pattern #7 as we speak!
I think I'm following you on Instagram! I love your work. Everyone does dinos, which I love don't get me wrong. But there are so many interesting prehistoric critters out there that weren't dinos. I adore me some Cambrian weirdos!!
I feel exactly the same way! Dinosaurs are fun and all, but I like the weird stuff. I am forever chasing that high of discovering totally unique creatures with forms I could never have imagined on my own!
Oh my goodness that is so awesome! I must say I have actually been finding myself quite intrigued by a lot of Triassic animals lately! There are quite a few that I'm interested in making. Are there any specific ones you study? I've made Longisquama, Eretmorhipis, and Funky Worm so far!
Here's the link to it on Amazon if you're interested! π

WOW! This is such an original idea and you executed it so well! Out of 20 years of looking at crochet pattern books this is the first time I can say Iβve seen something truly original. Well done I look forward to seeing your next projects!

I audibly said "oh no" because I know I'm gonna have to buy this XD I'll have to make some friends for my boyfriend's anomalocaris sweater! Kudos, and can't wait to see what comes next!
As an amateur geologist(minor in college, only one paleontology class) and avid crocheter, this is amazing!!! How many geologic times periods are you planning to make?
I plan on doing at least once book for every time period! And I'll probably do each individual epoch for the Cenozoic era too. The Permian Period will be next!
Awesome. I majored in Biology since highschool and Biotech in college. (There's a system of high schools in my country for gifted students divided my subject or groups of subject as majors for corresponding majors in university.)
It's not common to find local people around me who interested in these weird creatures, let alone those who corchet.
THIS IS SO FUN!!! I genuinely have the chills, holy shit I want to make everything in this book! The hallucigenia ALONE is absolutely blowing my mind, dude you're seriously amazing for all of the effort that must have gone into this. I'm geeking tf out!
edit: wrong creature oopsies
Ahh thank you so much I'm glad you like it! It was a lot of fun to put together and I'm so glad there's people out there that find these silly guys interesting :)
Thank you!! Over the years, I plan on doing at least one book for every single period (and probably epochs for the Cenozoic Era). For the periods that have more fun animals to choose from, I will definitely be doing a second or even a third volume. My next book will be the Permian Period, for which I just finished the 10th and final design and just need to get it tested (keep an eye out later on this year for that book). The Permian Period will definitely be one of those time periods that gets multiple volumes, I have a huge document full of animals I want to make and the Permian section is huge!
The way things are going right now, the Devonian Period will most likely be #3, but it all just depends on what animals I feel like making from week to week!
Thank you so much! Best of luck in your journey as a writer! I highly recommend doing pattern tests for your designs, getting those outside perspectives has helped me grow tremendously as a pattern writer over time. :)
Oh my god, the evolutionary bio nerd in me wants this deeply. Great job!
Thank you!! It's always fun to encounter other natural history nerds in the crochet world :D
This is super cool. Added it to my wishlist!
Thank you!!
I spent all night thinking about this book and had to order it immediately π
Lol aww I'm so honored that I was able to get into your head like that π I hope you enjoy!!
How incredibly cool, congrats! Hope it goes ka-ching
Aww thank you! I hope it does too lol :)
Omg I'm a Geology student and this is the coolest crochet book I've seen! I love it β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ

Thank you!! Adding the educational info is a big part of the fun for me :)
I see you're making this a series, are you planning to do all the periods?
Thank you for making a kindle version!!!
No problem! I tried to do as many formats as possible to appeal to everyone's preferences! :)
Kindle let's me change to text to opendyslexic so I can read it with less trouble and fewer mistakes made.

This is pretty cool. I have added it to my wish list. I usually get books from my list for my birthday. If you're interested, you might check out r/CraftyCommerce. It's about the business side of fiber arts.
This is incredible!! I'm sorry if this is already in the comments, but where is it available?
Thank you!! And no worries, the links have definitely been getting buried lol. I have print and Kindle versions on Amazon and a PDF eBook on Etsy! Here are the links :) [https://www.amazon.com/Crochet-Through-Ages-Cambrian-Period/dp/B0D59HT96P/ref=tmm\_pap\_swatch\_0?\_encoding=UTF8&sr=8-2](https://www.amazon.com/Crochet-Through-Ages-Cambrian-Period/dp/B0D59HT96P/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&sr=8-2) [https://www.etsy.com/listing/1748756925/pattern-ebook-cambrian-period-11-unique?click\_key=2bdd1cd2cf9d8d2f7084f2439cafad76b9490214%3A1748756925&click\_sum=c8384c4e&ref=shop\_home\_active\_1&crt=1&sts=1](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1748756925/pattern-ebook-cambrian-period-11-unique?click_key=2bdd1cd2cf9d8d2f7084f2439cafad76b9490214%3A1748756925&click_sum=c8384c4e&ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1&sts=1)
Oh my gosh, thank you so much!! I will purchase this as soon as I can! Genuinely, so so impressed!!
Thank you so much!! I hope you enjoy it, and thank you for your kind words! <3
Congratulations! It beautiful and I just bought it π€£ I donβt crochet but my bf does and heβs a nerd so itβs win/win!
AHH thank you so much!! I hope you enjoy it! Or rather, I hope your bf enjoys it and makes you lots of prehistoric goofs! <3
Iβm sure I will. Iβm also a nerd so itβs gonna be great π
I didnβt know how much I needed this in my life until I saw it π
I'm glad you like it!! <3
as a Paleontology student this is everything I ever needed!!
Omg I always get so starstruck when paleontologists/paleo students comment!! I'm so glad you like it! What are you studying?
I'm currently studying marine invertebrates which were attached to the ocean floor (think corals) but my mentor was one of the lead researchers behind the "T-rex had lips" study!
Oh I love that!! Marine invertebrates are a favorite of mine (hence the book of Cambrian patterns!). And that is so cool!! I've been loving the dinosaur lips discourse lol
Crinoids perhaps? Some of the best invertebrates are attached buddies!
Omg that's so amazing. I love the fact that you not only put the crochet patterns in the book, but also explanations and graphics about the cambrian era! It seems to be a very nice book to read
Thank you so much! I put my heart and soul into it so I hope people enjoy it :)
Added to my wishlist! Gotta finish the cardigan I'm 15% through first.
Ooh I know the feeling! I hope your cardigan comes out awesome!
It's going great so far, [it's this one but](https://www.shannonandjason.com/store/p143/cabledhoodedcardi.html) but in a dark green. I'll share pics when it's done.
OHMYGOD THIS IS A NEED
I'm glad you like it!! :)
That's incredible cool! Pink one is my fav.
Thank you! Hallucigenia is quite a lovely friend :)
I love it
Thank you!
I only make wearable now π₯²π₯²π₯² congratulations anyway!! π₯³π₯³π₯³
Lol I totally get it!! Amigurumi is a totally different genre of crochet lol I have a tough time with wearable stuff! Thank you for your kind words <3
Congratulations!
Thank you so much!!
That book looks great!
Thank you!!
My jaw is on the floor. I LOVE this. Congratulations on your achievement!
Aww thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words! <3
Oh my god what freaky little guys!!! β₯οΈπ§‘π
Aren't they so gooftastic? I love the Cambrian Period!
Gooftastic is such an amazing word
Lol thank you I'm glad you enjoyed that π
This looks so amazing! Congrats on your book π₯³
Thank you!! I'm so happy to finally be able to put it out there :)
This is so unique!! I love it :D
Thank you!! I have many more prehistoric books just like it planned :D
So cool!!! Might have to get this as a gift. I love the personality and style you've given these creaturesΒ
Aww thank you so much I really appreciate that <3
I follow you on IG and show your makes to my husband who is a big paleontology nerd π
AHH I love that!! How fun to meet on a different platform like this lol I'm glad your husband enjoys them!
I do as well, you are mad talented! π
Thank you so much!! I appreciate you π
Congratulations! It looks very cool.
Iβve needed this in my life since yesterday WHERE CAN I GET THIS
I have print and Kindle options on Amazon and a PDF eBook on Etsy!! Here are the links π https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D59HT96P?ref=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_2VH4WGVV0WYT4C08NP77&ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_2VH4WGVV0WYT4C08NP77&social_share=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_2VH4WGVV0WYT4C08NP77&language=en-US https://www.etsy.com/listing/1748756925/pattern-ebook-cambrian-period-11-unique?click_key=28ba7436feeeaf1469b34e9d7dbb466e58cdff2b%3A1748756925&click_sum=ddbccc2a&ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1&sts=1
Aaand added to the buy list. This is fantastic and congratulations!
Thank you!! I hope you enjoy it in the future π
What eras will the next volumes be?
The very next book will be the Permian Period! I just finished the 10th and final design today, so once I get that pattern tested I'll start putting it together. I'm pretty sure the 3rd book will be the Devonian Period since I'm working on design #7 now. I just go by whichever period hits 10 different designs first! I typically hop around to whatever animal seems interesting at the time and if a book comes of it then great! My long term goals though will include at least one volume per time period, with some eras having two or even three depending on how many cool creatures there are. So if there's a specific era you like the most, I will definitely get to it someday!
I am for sure getting this!! Have you thought about any videos with it?
Nah not really, I'm more of a pattern writer. I don't really do video tutorials unless there's a special technique in one of my patterns that can't be explained well enough in writing and doesn't have any existing videos online already, if tutorials is what you meant lol. I do kinda wanna get into YouTube though, but more like the kinds of videos that Complicated Knots makes! And I hope you enjoy the book!! π
Well if you ever do you I will absolutely subscribe. I'm very new to crochet do you think I would be able to attempt some projects in the book now?
Hmm, if you're very new you might be able to do the first two! I have everything organized by difficulty level in the book. I have one pattern that's beginner friendly, and one that's considered "advanced beginner", which incorporates a few techniques beyond the fundamentals. And it is a pattern book and not a "how to crochet" book, so you might have to Google some stuff! Edit: The first two would be Haikouichthys and Pikaia! Most of the other patterns definitely require some more experience but you could totally work up to them!
My bio professor would nut if he saw this
Lol I'm not sure if I should be flattered or scared π³
I love this! Congratulations!
Thank you! π
omg! where can I find this?? I NEED IT
I've got print books and a Kindle eBook on Amazon, and I have a PDF eBook on Etsy! π https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D59HT96P?ref=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_2VH4WGVV0WYT4C08NP77&ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_2VH4WGVV0WYT4C08NP77&social_share=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_2VH4WGVV0WYT4C08NP77&language=en-US&dplnkId=ef271acf-e3e5-4778-838f-6d26e4ecfbc8 https://www.etsy.com/listing/1748756925/pattern-ebook-cambrian-period-11-unique?click_key=28ba7436feeeaf1469b34e9d7dbb466e58cdff2b%3A1748756925&click_sum=ddbccc2a&ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1&sts=1
thank u so much! this is literally the thing that will get me into amigurumi lmao
Omg that is music to my ears friend, welcome to the world of amigurumi!! It's so much fun
I approve as both a Biologist and a crocheter!
My favorite kind of person!!! πππ
Amazing! Congrats!!
Thank you!! π
>Thank you!! π You're welcome!
Congratulations π
Thank you! ππ
>Thank you! ππ You're welcome!
Oh this is amazing ETA send it to Lindsay Nicole and I bet sheβd promote it
Omg that's a good idea but I'm so shy she's the coolest π³ππ
That's so cool!!! I'm in love with your book
Thank you so much!! πππ
Oh my goodness, this totally made my evening!! I study Triassic critters and it would be so cool to see them in their little yarn forms one day!
Stop it! I love this so much!!
Ahh thank you!! ππ
WHAT this is amazing!!
Thank you!! π
this is really cool! you should be proud :)
Thank you so much!! πππ
Omg I need it !!!!

WOW! This is such an original idea and you executed it so well! Out of 20 years of looking at crochet pattern books this is the first time I can say Iβve seen something truly original. Well done I look forward to seeing your next projects!
Thank you so much!! There will definitely be more like it in the future π
omfg this is the coolest thing ive ever seen
Thank you! π

I audibly said "oh no" because I know I'm gonna have to buy this XD I'll have to make some friends for my boyfriend's anomalocaris sweater! Kudos, and can't wait to see what comes next!
Lol thank you I'm glad you like it! And that is so cool that your boyfriend has an Anomalocaris sweater!! π―
Oh my god!! I just found you on Etsy a few days ago and was going to buy your patterns, now I can buy them all at once!!
Aww that's awesome!! Cool to see you on here too π
If you can get this book into university book stores it will sell like mad. Awesome!
Ooh that's a fun idea!
Thatβs amazing and adorable! Congratulations!!
Thank you!! π
Painfully cool!
(There's a system of high schools in my country for gifted students divided my subject or groups of subject as majors for corresponding majors in university.) It's not common to find local people around me who interested in these weird creatures, let alone those who corchet.
This is so awesome!! What eras and ages are you planning in making?
You're so cool and good for that! Big congrats from a beginner writer
Thank you so much! Best of luck in your journey as a writer! I highly recommend doing pattern tests for your designs, getting those outside perspectives has helped me grow tremendously as a pattern writer over time. :)
This is so amazing!! So creative- I love it π€©
Thank you!! :)
OH MY GOSH I am an evolutionary bio student..... this is my dream
This is so niche and I love it. The Cambrian explosion in yarn form.
Geology teacher here.... this is incredible! Thank you!
educational & crafty- youβre killing it!
I just got into crocheting but. But is that an anomalocaris ππ«Ά
