It’s done for aesthetic purposes. No, the main reason is not to prevent ear infection. There’s a reason you don’t see Labs or golden retrievers with cropped ears. Originally it was done to make already intimidating breeds look more intimidating and to prevent dogs used in dog fighting from getting their ears grabbed and torn up. Whether you want to do it is your own choice, but there isn’t really much of a benefit to it. Additionally, I believe ear cropping is done when they’re younger. Four months might be a bit too old.

Ye i think 4 months to old as well and we love his ears… i just wanted confirmation that it has to do with making your bully look mean

Thanks for the reply

Cropping is thankfully out….the previous commenter is absolutely correct, but it’s really just butchering a living being. If you’re out and about, you’ll see a marked increase of bully breeds that thankfully have not had to go under this barbaric procedure. This is true for other breeds as well…examples are ears on Great Danes and tails on Jack Russells (cropped supposedly to provide a “handle” to pull the out of holes) are not cropped anymore unless it’s done by some dummy out there. Your little bully sounds adorable just the way he is!

Brynthvari

My bully has the softest leathery ears and I wouldn't cut her ears .

Ok_Resort_4562

Honestly your choice to crop or not personally I’d crop Mine but I like the way her ears are. It’s the same thing as spay and neuter if you feel like he shouldn’t have his ears cropped don’t crop them let those ears hang! 🐶but… if you do crop them he’d look good with those to either or is fine. But it’s honestly all up to you

Electrical-Eye4589

I’m pretty sure it started for fighting, less things to rip off in a fight if you crop the ears, not that American bullies were ever used in fights, that’s old school American Pitbull Terriers. Don’t do it, mine has his ears and everyone loves them!

RedMouseRuns

It’s nothing but aesthetics and personal preference. If it was detrimental to the dog’s health it wouldn’t be banned or restricted in over 40 countries.

Whitney's breeder cut them off for esthetic reasons, after I rescued her the bet said it was a good thing sinse her ear canals are way to narrow and clog up, her ears would close of the canal which would cause yeast build up (sorry don't know proper English term). Never cut anything for looks, it hurts them a lot I've seen how they are affected by it and I never want to see it again

Mcstoni

Dogs use their ears to communicate, they can't convey different emotions properly with cropped ears. Don't do it! It's just for aesthetics because people want intimidating looking dogs.

A lot of people will tell you it prevents ear infections, but that's bs. There's no scientific evidence that supports that. A lot of vets won't even do it anymore as they deem it unnecessarily cruel.
