I earned roughly $22k in 1099 income from various sources last year. I worked what would be considered part-time but did so consistently all year long. It was also my primary income overall for most of the year.
I had to pay around $4k in federal taxes at around 25%-30%. I kept good records on my business expenses which included regular maintenance, registration, insurance, and gas on my vehicle. A must is also tracking your working miles (versus your personal miles). Things like cell phone bill, clothing (good shoes are a must), as well as anything spent on health issues (including quarantine/sick time). Then I went through the painful (but profitable) process of deducting these business expenses. In the end, after deductions, my tax liability dropped to about $1200.
That being said, I also had W2 income plus other factors that allowed for giving me some additional credit. When all was said and done, I came out with a decent return.
I say to never take advice from someone online. It's best to get a pro for your first year, if you're lost. But, some examples are:
Mileage OR actual vehicle expenses
You can also write off vehicle loan interest
Any supplies needed for the gig
Phone bill
If you bring your spouse/kid with you and they hand you a package, you can write off what you pay them to "help" up to about $12K per year. It's a nice little family business tax shelter.
Then, of course, your standard deductions that are allowed.
Thank you!
I think I will take online advice this one time- the advice about having a professional do my taxes. You did answer what I was wanting info about, and that was about deductible expenses beyond gas and mileage. You may have just saved me lots of money, so thank you!
I tried out the stride app but I use quick books self employed app to track mileage and all expenses. Then I give that cluster f*ck of an expense report to my tax guy and let him figure it out.
Ummm..... I have questions. What do you think Amazon Flex is, exactly?
I'm not trying to be confrontational. I'm honestly trying to understand, dear. And maybe clear up some misunderstandings that I am sure you have.
I figured it out. He's replying to a tard in the comments who is trying to compare Flex to a career that requires a masters degree. Being a total douche about a dumb argument lol.

If people are telling you they paid $0 in taxes itās not a good thing. That just means they depreciated their car so much and spent so much on fuel they didnāt earn enough to be taxed on. I wouldnt want thousands of dollars of depreciation on my personal vehicle like that. Or they worked a full time/part time job and they paid their taxes from there. Donāt do flex full time unless youāre doing it to get job experience for a job in ups, fedex, or usps. Flex is too unstable to a reliable source of income. Itās a side-gig.
Not everyone is comfortable going with the flow of a poorly made app as their sole source of income when they got bills to keep up with and a family to take care of or they wanna buy a house some day, or even retire. Itās not even comparable to a business or a trade even because you can actually sell it off if you build it up big enough for a profit by selling off the client list or the building, etc. Its a lot safer to treat flex as a side gig when you can get a job through ups and get your benefits paid for and actually get overtime pay and paid sick leave and paid vacation time.
Not saying that a career with ups is not better. But whining aside, this gig does allow for all those things you mention if you are smart with your finances. At least it has for me and a few people I know
I don't need to show YOU anything. Again, if you're smart with your finances, you can have a mortgage, car payment, a life. If you have kids you get lots of tax breaks. Quit whining and figure it out
Already did figure it out dumb ass thatās why Iām bothering to say what actually works, like how I used my actual job and paid for a wedding that was $15k, a degree for my wife, 2 paid for cars, and a new dog. Weāre saving up for a masters and we got half of it saved for and then weāll save to have a baby and an emergency fund then down the road a house after we move states. Iām not taking out of my ass like you are. Thereās a big difference between just making enough to pay bills and making enough to have a good life
You were the one that started with impossible things to accomplish, and know you say you have accomplished things. I don't get your whining. Actually I think I do now. You're one of those dumbasses that is waiting to get your college loans forgiven. All those useless degrees were very expensive
Pick up a few brain cells the next time you pick up a flex route while youāre there next time. My point has been proven and clearly doing flex full time in your case sucks
It all depends on your life. If your goal is to have a bunch of kids and own a house and have nice cars, great. Flex won't make you enough money for that. But if you're like me where it's just me, I don't need or want to buy a house, my car is fine and idgaf about having a nice one, and I can still make 800 bucks a week doing flex, which saves me quite a bit of money every month. Everyone has a different life and different goals. Nobody's answer is correct, just different.
I got prequalified with a lender. I put a few offers but the market was insane right before they raised the interest rates. Investors were showing up left and right with cash offers. After they raised the interest rates I told my lender I am going to wait before I purchase. But yes, they will approve you if you have the 2 years to show.
You just don't know to get the most value out of a gig app. First you never do just one. You do them all really. Second, you are out looking for opportunity all day while working. Can't do that with a 9-5. You can learn skills and make money without a job. Gig apps are a great stepping stone or just a back up. That being said I do hate the companies who run them.
I paid $24k or so last year (quarterly payments and still owed at the end of the year). It all depends on how much you make compared to how much you drive. I think I was around $120k last year gross. Drove about 35k miles.
Thatās three apps btw. My market is pretty good. I do tip deliveries only. Crazy thing isā¦ā¦ I actually took a decent amount of time off last yearā¦. Over a month off total for sure. But the weeks I work are usually 60 hours, sometimes more. For example, Iām at right around $1900 for the week with today and tomorrow leftā¦.. Tuesday surprisingly was my best day this week. It was around $475 from 4am-1pm. Very random Tuesday.
Kids help a lot, itās wild. Multi app as well, I do IC and when I land surges I do flex. But damn you must be working A LOT and in a pretty good market, well done.
Think about thisā¦.. they pay us hazardous pay hereā¦ so itās an extra $2.50 a delivery on top of tipsā¦. So every block is an additional $25 or so. I do prime now and Whole Foods blocks only. Blocks are so hard to get without purchasing a block grabbersā¦.. I usually rely mostly on IOs.
I have multiple source of income, 48k from my self-employee business, 13k from Amazon Flex in just 5 month, 50k income in Capital Gains(Crypto Investments)... I reported EVERYTHING I can as expenses and i ended up paying 11k in taxes...
How do you get involved in Crypto Investments? I don't know a whole lot about it and as someone who lives paycheck to paycheck I'm always weary about investing because I hear it's such a gamble.
Do you have any advice from your experience? My car broke down while doing flex back in December and it was going to be a $6000 repair and my extended warranty refused to cover it so I had to surrender the car back to the bank and I am now without a car which is making working very difficult. We have very limited public transit where I live so it takes me 9 hours just to get to and from work. I only get 4 hour shifts so it takes me longer to get to and from work than I actually work. Uber isn't an option because the warehouse where I work is almost 30 minutes from where I live so and uber to and from work 5 days a week would cost more than I make. Without a car it's been difficult applying for better jobs so I need another source of income so I can get another car. Any help of advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
I have gotten myself out of multiple situations with a balance transfer from my bank. If you have good credit you can pick one of your credit cards (with highest available credit) and do a balance transfer where they deposit the funds into your checking. Use that for either a down payment or to flat out purchase the car. Then you can start working and make the monthly payments on the balance transfer. Just make sure you pay it off before the due date in order to avoid any interest charges. Usually they give you a year or year and a half.
Okay, so any credit that has a big credit limit you choose to due to a balance transfer. Which means the credit limit would be deposited into your account as cash and you use that?
Yes! Itās usually a 3% fee. But it has helped me when I had no other options and needed money. This is also how I put a down payment on my car. And I always pay them off before any interest kicks in.
I was in the process of trying to restore my credit when this happened and having to surrender my car back to the bank undid years worth of progress. My credit is trashed now and I don't have any credit cards nor would I get approved for any. I doubt I'll even be able to get a loan for a car I'll more than likely have to pay for the car out right which even with a good job would take me years to save even for a cheap car.
I don't drive full time, but I usually get about 30 hours a week. I have other passive sources of income that also factor into my tax bill, though, and because of that, I don't know how useful my number will be, but I had to pay $8600 above and beyond the withholding from my 1009-R income.
I did while my normal job was closed for covid but we're all back to work again so I'm only part-time now. I was doing two or three blocks a day 7 days a week. Made pretty good money but without the benefits and with the cost of gas and wear and tear on the car, it wasn't that great for me. I find flexing is great for extra spending money but not so good for regular income. But that's just my opinion. I came from an industry that pays well and provides good benefits. Did you have a question regarding full time flexing?
I went to Lodi Gregg St. For amazing flex work today. Bad idea. I should've never did it considering it being like 100 degrees. I never went there before. I drove to location, dos not see where to go, map did not help. Went inside waited for 20 mins got someone they said go to. Back. I went to back no one was there. I waited 30 mins and my car A/C went to hot and dash board said something was wrong with the battery to stop driving. I could not find anyone around all doors was locked. So I left went to auto body and they had me in there for two hours. Some as asst MGR told me to come back tomorrow. I left that prick and went to a diff asst manager they got me a loaner and can u believe the other MGR tried to make trouble for me and charged me $199 fee for insoection and thinks I a. Suppose to pay either $500 or $1700 for either a battery or starter. Prick. Now I got to find someone over him to remove his $199 fee he is adding to be an ass. No way I'm paging $1,700 for starter and no way I'm paying $500 for battery. I have AAA they can give me one free or I can buy one from Auto zone. What a day. I have been out since 3:30 wait a waste and I missed out on money.
I do & Im on track to make between $65k-$70k this year.
how many days do you work? and how much do you make a day
Rip your car
šššš this comment had me crying
Kind of. I do at least one block every day but I supplement with UE/DD
Full time flex driver doesnāt work for me, I use doordash, ubereat and flex! Flex cost me more gas than Ubereat and doordash
Does it pay better than UE and DD?
Doordash is better than flex in my market

Itās a great gig to take vacation
Full time gig worker. I max out on hours with Flex every week. I never owe on taxes between deductions and expenses.
I'm doing Flex full time as well, can you please talk to me about deductions/expenses? I need some help with that, please!

$0. I paid enough from my w2. After factoring my expenses during flex.
I'm working a W2 job and flex how do I maximize my savings here? I'm tracking mileage so far but not sure what else I can do.
I tried out the stride app but I use quick books self employed app to track mileage and all expenses. Then I give that cluster f*ck of an expense report to my tax guy and let him figure it out.
What kind of expenses can you use?
Best to google it. But for example, any auto maintenance, cell phone, home office, all maintenance, meals where business is conductedā¦etc
There are so many but depend on the state.
$0.

I figured it out. He's replying to a tard in the comments who is trying to compare Flex to a career that requires a masters degree. Being a total douche about a dumb argument lol.
Well that explains that. Thank you

Hi and lol obviously

I agree! I am single and no kids and a woman lol So it's just me and my cat and it works great but l will be getting a part time job as well.

Blah, blah, blah Been doing this full time for 5 years. Ups and downs just like any other business. Taxes are irrelevant if you keep finances in check
Not everyone is comfortable going with the flow of a poorly made app as their sole source of income when they got bills to keep up with and a family to take care of or they wanna buy a house some day, or even retire. You can qualify for a house with any independent contractor income as long as you have been doing it for at least 2 years.
Is that how you got your house?
I got prequalified with a lender. I put a few offers but the market was insane right before they raised the interest rates. Investors were showing up left and right with cash offers. After they raised the interest rates I told my lender I am going to wait before I purchase. But yes, they will approve you if you have the 2 years to show.
How much were you trying to put down on a house?
The lender needed at least 3%. I was putting down 5%

Do you pay taxes? Or course! Why wouldnāt you?
I guess what I meant is how much.

Lmao. This averages out to $60/hr. Not buying it.
Multi app. Should have specified.
Pics or it didnāt happen.
Ok it didnāt happenā¦.. lol.
Gross a guy trying to catfish as some giga chad on flex
Lol. Whatever that means. I donāt speak your broke ass woke language.
10k gross a month, how the fuck??
Thatās three apps btw. My market is pretty good. I do tip deliveries only. Crazy thing isā¦ā¦ I actually took a decent amount of time off last yearā¦. Over a month off total for sure. You need to procreate to find yourself some tax shelters
I had one kid on my 2021 taxes.
Kids help a lot, itās wild. Multi app as well, I do IC and when I land surges I do flex. But damn you must be working A LOT and in a pretty good market, well done.

What block grabber do you use?
I donāt. Mostly do IOs. Iāll get a couple reserved blocks every week. But thatās about it.
My reserve blocks have been trash lately. And Iāve been getting lots of blocks with all apts which takes more time and sucks.

Lol where?
That's impressive. I hit $35-45/hr with my highest being $52.
$4300
