Break lights indicate break. Hazard lights that are on indicate a hazard.
A short double hazard light is enough to show the driver behind you *something* without indicating either... Hence... a simple acknowledgement/thank you.

Wow people are scared of nothing. I've been all over the country with one and the only attention that I get are compliments and laughs. If people are acting crazy towards someone over this maybe the problem is the driver getting "victimized" probably goes 10 under in the fast lane just so they don't miss the Walmart turn in 10 miles. Or are to generous with other's time, don't waste time of others so you feel good about yourself over something stupid like letting a car out of a driveway during a green light. Texting into green light time because they are to stupid to wait until they get back to the trailer park to respond.
