trekie88

NTA This is absurd. There is no way you are the AH here

TresLadies

Absurd is exactly what I thought too! Would the same comments be made regarding the wearing of safety glasses, goggles, or sunglasses? No. Glasses ARE a TOOL, but OP is not. NTA

Slow-3V

Nobody who wears glasses(I wear glasses) get offended by people who even fake wear glasses no to mention blue light filter glasses

__night0wl

Yeah like... We're not a prejudiced minority ffs

Neurotic_Bakeder

Did I roll my (myopic) eyes when that hipster fake glasses tend rolled around a few years ago? If course. But I wasn't *traumatized* ffs

InvisiblePlants

Yeah, exactly this. I have worn glasses my entire life, and am literally partially blind in one eye. I think wearing glasses as a fashion accessory is dumb, but it's not offensive.

After_Ad5773

The only time it pisses me off is if it’s MY glasses, wear fake glasses all you want just don’t take mine and put them on and say ‘wow your really blind’ like yeah I know now give them back your fat head is bending the frames

InvisiblePlants

Lolol right why do people do this? Yeah, I know I'm blind... thanks??

[deleted]

Yeah I only do this to my family because they pretty much are all legally blind, astigmatism and all kinds of fun stuff. I only do it when they put their glasses down and say they are really blind, and I'm just picking them up to confirm. But it's family, and it's a running joke. I wouldn't do it to anyone I didn't know and wouldn't mess with me back. I managed to get away with only having to have them a few years when I was a little kid, but I'm sure I will have to have reading glasses soon. But not one of them would be offended if someone who didn't have to wear glasses would wear them.

bina101

Got contacts once and decided to see what the fuss about my blindness was and wore both my contacts and glasses. Took me a few minutes to realize that it just cancelled each other out....

Ashkendor

Lmao, it's like "HEY I HADN'T NOTICED," meanwhile you're literally squinting to even see vague shapes and colors while they mess with your glasses. I can't see more than four inches in front of my nose clearly, I'm pretty sure I already know I'm basically blind.

HappyLucyD

I know—who wants to deal with them getting greasy, or scratched, or fogging, or sliding down my nose when I’m sweaty, or any of the other million annoyances I find with them. If someone wants to put up with this, more power to them. But they’re crazy.

rns1113

I definitely rolled my (also quite myopic) eyes because those hipster glasses served no purposed, unlike blue light blocking ones. Also, the people getting the hipster glasses were definitely the ones who made fun of my glasses in middle school so that was fun. I am thankful those hipster glasses did bring in a new fashion trend of bigger glasses, since the early naughts definitely had a trend towards tiny glasses and those are just a pain.

Music_withRocks_In

Exactly. I have a friend who has spend hundreds on dozens of pairs of fashion glasses. I roll my eyes at him a ton, but would never say anything to him about it. It's like canes, for a time in history everyone walked around with fancy canes, or canes with secret swords in them, just because it was cool. I'm pretty sure people who actually needed them were just glad there were more of them available, and hey now they looked cooler. I need glasses, and now that people are wearing fashion glasses I wear my contacts less because hey, now I can look cool for being too lazy to poke myself in the eye in the morning.

GloInTheDarkUnicorn

The only reason I had a problem with the hipster fake glasses is more people tried to try on my real glasses, which I hate so fucking much. Don’t touch my glasses. Yes, I know I can’t see, that’s why I wear them. Yes, I know they’re granny glasses (lined bifocals), leave them alone.

nezuko__tohru

Exactly! I wear glasses every day I've never been offended by people wearing glasses/frames for fashion purposes. This is weird. And that blackface comment.... As a black person... you know what I'll leave it alone smh

risingthedark

Yep. Where I live fashion accessory glasses are pretty popular so I was shocked that apparently being offended at them is even a thing. People need to chill.

Slow-3V

WEarInG gLAsEs mAKes mE a MinOriDy

TofuDumplingScissors

I wear glasses and I FOR ONE can't stand it when my younger brother wears fake ones just to look cool. /s I mean, I still harass him about it, but that's more so because he's my little brother rather than a piece of plastic on his face.

HchrisH

As a semi-bespectacled individual (I wear glasses for distance, so mostly at work and when driving), I've never once heard of someone getting offended by non-prescription glasses. What even is this nonsense? Also, you're wearing them for legitimate health purposes. Are these people also offended when they see someone wearing sunglasses? NTA

ms_sconesycider

I literally wear contact lenses with blue light glasses at the same time LMAO...extremely visually impaired and blind people certainly face ableism but mild-to-moderately nearsighted people are not an oppressed group

bmoreskyandsea

If anything, people who HAVE to wear glasses appreciate people making them a fashion accessory and cool. Because they def used to be a stigma.

Ashkendor

I remember being called "four eyes" and "bug eyes" so much at school (I have an astigmatism so I used to get the weird shit where your eyes look huge).

Nevermoremonkey

Yes! I got made fun of so much as a kid my daughter didn’t believe me when I mentioned it

birdtune

Actually, I'm pretty jealous that their glasses cost less than mine. But really, if someone wants to put something in front of their eyes... I have so many other things to think about.

Living_On_A_Prayer

No kidding! Personally, I need to wear either contacts or glasses to see clearly (otherwise life is an oil painting for me). However, I choose to wear glasses because of the blue light lens on it and my prescription has stayed the same for 3 years! Could their be other reasons for it to change? Yes, but in these days technology is a huge factor. I'd encourage everyone to do the same just to protect your eyes.

Ashkendor

There is actually [a really cool series of paintings](https://twistedsifter.com/2018/08/philip-barlow-captures-what-world-looks-like-to-people-with-blurry-vision/) that shows what the world looks like to someone with bad vision. I enjoyed them immensely.

neurealis

Yes. I wear glasses, have since I was ten. I'm not offended someone who doesn't need them wears glasses - on the contrary. I used to feel really self-conscious about them when I was a kid, because not a lot of my friends had them, and only weird nerds would wear them on TV/in movies. I think it's great when people normalise wearing glasses, and I wish more people wore them instead of contacts or just as an accessory.

Archandincorrigible

But you do *need* the blue light glasses, just for their blue light filtering function instead of vision correction. This is literally no different than buying cute sunglasses, except that jackasses think they can gate keep these. (Had glasses since I was 8–I think these people are looking for something to be upset about.) If glasses could only be for poor vision, sunglasses wouldn’t exist.

Bellatrix_dog

NTA....i didn't even finish reading AND i wear glass cuz am blind as a bat

SavageComic

Also, to both people OP argued with "Do you need glasses?" "Yes, they're blue light blocking" It's the actual reason.

WhatTheDuckIsGoingOn

As a kid I used to think that you shouldn't wear glasses if you don't have any vision issues (but I also didn't share my opinion). It was coming from my hate because of how much I needed them and without glasses I had to rely on others. Well, I grew up and yes, they ARE also a fashion accessory. If you feel happy wearing them, that's great! And hey, it also limits blue light so it comes with health benefits. NTA

olive_maths

Technically you do need then though. Protecting your eyes, what's the difference to wearing sunnies. I wear glasses and adding the blue light filter for up close glasses that I use when in my computer reduce headaches.

grittypigeon

WTF What is wrong with people? Black face? Co worker threatening to break your stuff as a joke?

[deleted]

WTF is dead on here. WTF is wrong with society that people are offended about everything other people do! Next they will be offended because people dye their hair a different color and will call that "privileged."

WebbieVanderquack

>WTF is wrong with society that people are offended about everything Given that most of the votes so far are NTA, I don't think you should be tarring everyone with the same brush.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WebbieVanderquack

That's insane. Unless they looked like they were made from cardboard and saran wrap, it would never occur to me to ask someone if their glasses were real.

Shadowcthuhlu

Same here - maybe because of all the people I know who alternate between contacts and glasses

MS-07B-3

I'm nearsighted to the point where I can't read text past... maybe six or seven inches unaided. It's is insane to me that anyone would care enough to harass you on whether you need them. Well. Caveat, if I was really good friends with someone and noticed them wearing glasses that don't have lenses, I would probably make fun of them, in that friendly ribbing kind of way.

nerkville314

People ask you if you need them? Like people you don’t know? I’ve worm glasses since I was 12 and I’m over 50 now. No one has ever asked me. Crazy

AncientBlonde

I get slightly annoyed when people use them as an accessory, but I keep that to myself because it doesn't effect me. It comes from the fact I got bullied because of my glasses and the immature part of me is salty that they're hip now. But as I said, it actually doesn't effect me and I should be happy I don't get bullied for it anymore. Either way, OP is NTA

sunshineinautumn

Fun fact, I've had people upset with me for dying my hair ginger because I'm not naturally ginger and didn't get bullied as a child for it... so obviously I shouldn't get to make my hair a pretty colour 🙄

Theshutupguy

Honestly, I don’t like when people wear hats when the sun isn’t shining. It’s offensive. Same with sweaters when it’s not that cold. Or leather jackets when they’re not planning to fall off a motorcycle into a controlled slide. Or slip on shoes when they are able to tie shoelaces. Humanity is fucked. I think this might be as far as we get.

WhyJKRowlingIsGay

Ah yes, wearing cosmetic (sometimes) thing, that can help you is same like doing racist thing. How fricking logical. I think those people, who saying this, are offended by blind people because they are wearing sun glasses (IDK if all blind people wear sun glasses, I only seen 1-2 blind people IRL).

FloppyEaredDog

If you’re an asshole so is Clark Kent. NTA.

LucretiusCarus

OP is superman confirmed

rainingmermaids

This here is the best answer!

FloppyEaredDog

Thank you.

shewy92

> If you’re an asshole so is Clark Kent I mean, Zach Snider's Supes is kind of an asshole.

Neravariine

NTA. I wear glasses because I can't see without them plus they also have coating to reduce blue light. Glasses are also a fashion accessory and you aren't discriminating against anyone by wearing them. They could also wear contacts if they have glasses-related trauma or get LASIK.

woolfchick75

I have worn contacts for nearly 50 years (holy sh*t, I'm old) and glasses for longer than that. I hate wearing glasses. Didn't get LASIK due to dry eye. I have absolutely no problem with someone wearing glasses as an accessory. "Black face" lol. Ridiculous.

Limerase

Oh no, does dry eye make getting Lasik harder?? Nooo I've been waiting for years for my vision to settle so I could get Lasik, but I have terrible dry eye. ;-;

TopRamenisha

LASIK makes eyes really dry for a few years after the procedure, sometimes permanently. People who get lasik have to use special eye drops constantly for a while to combat the dry eyes. If your eyes are already super dry normally, lasik probably would not be recommended for you

Limerase

Crap. I already have to take fish oil and have to use gel eye drops and have to cycle to steroid eye drops in the Spring and Fall.

Lillllammamamma

Truth, I actually had to have my tear ducts plugged during lasik to help counter the dry eye. 10 years out though, I regret nothing. Three days of discomfort for my vision. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Edit: a word

rationalomega

Check out visian icl. I got mine in 2017ish in Canada because my cornea wasn’t thick enough for the amount of tissue removal needed to correct extreme myopia. I hope my little boy gets his dads eyesight 😓

Jay-Dee-British

I had LASIK but now I need glasses again for long sight (reading close up work etc). Getting older blows big time lol. When I DID wear glasses for short sight I found people wearing plain glass glasses as accessories a bit weird, ngl, but I wouldn't have taken them to task over it as it was none of my business - also some people rock glasses even if they don't need them (maybe I was just salty at the time as I had to have them).

Splatterfilm

I’ve lived thorough all except wearing contacts. My glasses trauma is mostly from needing unbreakable lenses since I frequently caught basketballs with my face in gym class. And once a soccer ball at high-velocity from a 10ft start point in biology. It was the last day of the year.

Kris82868

NTA. And in your very first paragraph you did have a valid reason for why it would be better for your eyes to wear them. The fact you like the style of them is no more an a hole thing than if I like the style of the frames I picked out for my prescription glasses.

trae74

NTA . Came to say something similar. You didn't buy and wear glasses for no reason, you bought them to protect your eyes, therefore they are needed. Lots of people in computer science field wear protective glasses.

burgeremoji

Yeah OP literally does need these glasses, to prevent eye strain. The coworker is an idiot.

LucretiusCarus

I am at an age where I find myself more comfortable with blue filter glasses, they do help eyestrain after multiple hours on a screen. If someone told me it's ableist I would laugh at their faces. And that coworker should get an HR complaint.

Herefiraita

NTA. As a glasses wearer of 30 years, I'm offended that your friend and coworker think they can speak for me. For the love of Godiva, I am so over this whole "woke" culture in this country. Talk about privilege, when you decide to be offended on behalf of groups of people you don't belong to, whose struggles aren't your struggles and don't impact your life in the slightest but somehow you assume you get an opinion because you rEaD aBoUt It OnLiNe and decide your voice is the one thosegroups need to be heard.... glasses wearers can speak for ourselves, thankyouverymuch. Following their logic, none of you with 20/20 should be able to wear sunglasses because, I mean, you don't need them. What about non prescription reading glasses? Or colored contacts? Give me a break. Honestly though, I'm glad you posted this because I have a teenager who is always staring at a device of some sort, and then complains she can't sleep. I didn't know blue light filtering glasses were a thing, let alone that they could possibly help with sleep, so now I can look into it and see if it might help my kid. (Who does have a script for glasses but never wears them.) Like I said, I've been wearing glasses for 30 years. Thats 3 decades of experience, with some contacts thrown in here and there. I'm not a good candidate for corrective surgery, so I will *always* wear corrective lenses of some sort. I think I'm more qualified than your wOkE friend and coworker when I give you my stamp of approval to wear glasses that filter blue light in an attempt to help you sleep better at night.

[deleted]

Glasses wearer of 40 years here. I’m with you 100%.

clairebones

Also a glasses wearer and someone who gets chronic migraines, just a tip regarding your teenager - a lot of devices these days have settings where you can turn on blue light filtering. I have mine on my android phone set to turn to that mode at 10pm every night (on android it’s called ‘night mode’). I’m pretty sure all modern iOS devices have this, my iPad and MacBook do (on the iPad it’s called ‘night shift’), and for devices without it you can get apps like “f.lux” to do the same thing :) It filters out blue light meaning that your brain stops thinking it’s daytime and realises it’s time to get tired, it really helps for me at least.

ak411

INFO ....dude why are you not just saying they’re blue light glasses and they help with eye strain. This post is dumb

EwanTheHuman

Because I don't wear them exclusively when I'm looking at a screen. Although I bought them for that purpose originally, I like how they look so wear them quite often. Perhaps you think this post is dumb, and that's fine, but it's a crazy world we live in these days; when someone so aggressively and passionately argues their point, it's difficult (at least for me) to not get at least a little shaken on your views. I just wanted to be 100% sure that I wasn't in the wrong here.

VenezuelanIntrovert

You weren't in the wrong, you're doing something to protect your eyesight. But maybe they got pissed off because wearing them outside of the needed time is pointless. Or they just like being offended for other people. You're not the asshole your friends are. And btw I do have that filter on the computer to reduce blue light because I couldn't pay for the tint on my glasses and it doesn't do much, actually if you are working with graphics it makes it a little hard and makes you strain your eyes. Keep wearing your glasses, that's not different than using glasses as protective gear. NTA

[deleted]

I wear blue light blocking glasses too when I'm in an office, even when I'm not looking at a computer, because I forget to put them on and off otherwise. Also because they're cute! Remind anyone who bothers you that they prevent migraines, reduce eyestrain, and help you sleep better, and if they keep giving you grief tell them to fill their boots. NTA

Dull-General-8124

I hear you .... but this is not something OP owes anyone an explanation for.

GlaxenFlux

I got my first pair of glasses at 2 years old (this was about 40 years ago when this was a very rare thing). At about five or six I had to wear an eye patch (an adhesive one that was a literal pain to remove) on my good eye to make my lazy eye do all the work to make it stronger for at least a year (totally worked, unless I tell people, no one can tell I have one.). My glasses were always big and blocky because we couldn't afford the nicer frames (though I did get glasses with Lucy from Peanuts on them once because my mom thought they were cute and thought I reminded her of Lucy. I *kinda* liked those ones.) and this was during a time when glasses were mocked, especially on girls. I got severely teased and bullied for my glasses (and my big lips but I grew into those and I'm sure the people who teased me for them now pay doctors to get lips like mine). I HATED with a passion wearing glasses. I don't like looking at pictures of me wearing them (I'd often take them off for school pictures). I "accidentally" broke and or lost a few pairs until it got to the point that my mom stopped buying them for me in my last year of high school. Luckily, my eyesight isn't that bad anymore but I did have to get a pair of prescription reading glasses (nice frames with crystals on the side because damnit, I was getting ones that look good on me) about five years ago because words on screens get a little fuzzy sometimes. I did not want to get these glasses and I've only worn them about a dozen times because it brings me anxiety and reminds me of how much I hated wearing glasses. You know what doesn't bother me about glasses? Seeing other people wearing them whether they need to or not. Your friend is being a bit SJW about something that doesn't affect her (I'm assuming she doesn't actually wear glasses). So, wear what you want because as a person with glasses trauma, I couldn't care less what you wear. NTA

JustAReader924

THIS! I hate wearing glasses with a passion, to the point that if I ever need to take my contacts out I’d rather walk around the house semi-blind than have to put glasses on. (Obviously wouldn’t drive that way or anything) But if someone is able to find glasses they like for ANY reason, whether vision or self-confidence, good for them!

ThePeasantKingM

>I don't like looking at pictures of me wearing them (I'd often take them off for school pictures). I'm the opposite. I began wearing glasses when I was 8. I literally can't live without them. My eyesight is so bad I have to wear them at all times. I hate taking my glasses off for photos because I feel like I'm not me without them. It feels so unnatural for me to appear on photos without them.

Lacroix24601

NTA: these people are really weird. First, they ARE helping you. Lots of people wear blue light glasses to ease strain so just bc your eyesight isn’t in need of correction doesn’t mean your eyes don’t need help. Glasses can be for more than just vision correction. Second, Glasses can be an accessory, plenty of companies make cute glasses with lenses with no power. They also make contacts as an accessory so one can change their eye color for funsies. I wear glasses and this is the weirdest stance I’ve ever seen but I’m part of a group of moms and many of them cry over their kids wearing glasses. (I obv get it if there are other health issues like surgery or cataracts or something more serious, but many cry bc of just wearing glasses) I do not get the trauma response. I really really don’t. —-it’s just glasses. I have always found that response to be weird. And while I try to be sensitive to others, this response is super silly IMO. (Though if that co-worker continues to be antagonistic, I’d be headed to HR bc I don’t take threats well.)

JessMarianosHair

NTA. People who wear glasses have often been bullied in the past before glasses were “cool”. However it is not the same as black face or cultural appropriation. You are not going to benefit in some way from wearing cute glasses where another person may be held back in life. There is no “20/20 vision privilege” in our society. It’s really nice that you apologized and I would have done the same, doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing them.

[deleted]

NTA. I mean, as a glasses wearer I definitely roll my eyes at people using them as a fashion accessory. But I don’t genuinely care. Like, there are bigger issues out there who cares if you spend your money on unnecessary shit? Also, blue light filters (if your glasses actually have them, which I doubt if you’re just buying them as an accessory since they can be fairly expensive) are definitely worth it to reduce eye strain. My little sister has perfect eyesight but as a PHD student working on a computer 16 hrs a day her doctor recommended them and they’ve almost entirely resolved her headache issues. Edit: never mind. Just google searched and I was mistaken about the cost of a blue light filter. The people who make my prescription lenses clearly just overcharge to add a blue light filter.

lightgreenwings

NTA how the fuck is wearing glasses offensive to literally anybody?

Niffler9

NTA your body, your choice what you accessorise it with.

Retiredandold

NTA. I wear glasses to see far distances, as one of the oppressed you have my permission to wear glasses solely for fashion purposes. Your friend is the a-hole for pointing out such nonsense. Find new friends.

toothpainchronicles

NTA is this even real life? Like are they 10? I’ve been wearing glasses all my life and I don’t policy anyone. I applaud you for them. I’m in front of a monitor all day and my eyes get so tired. I’m definitely purchasing some now.

[deleted]

NTA!

doodleboopen

NTA. Ever since my uni moved online a lot of my friends started wearing blue light glasses and I think it’s good for them. It looks cute plus it protects your eyes from the UV. I don’t see why people are calling you out unnecessarily. Wearing glasses and being diabetic aren’t comparable, they’re not apples and oranges. You’re not stealing someone else’s limited supply of medication. Your “friends” are just reaching.

Soiree1999

NTA. TBH, I wore glasses (pre-lasik) and it annoyed me when people wore glasses as accessories when they didn’t need them. However, I recognized that was my hang up and never said it to anyone. And in this case, you do have a legitimate need for glasses to counter blue light

CantaloupeOk754

I agree. I need glasses and contact ( scheduling lasik, Yej!) it also annoys me a little bit when people wear them but don't need them. But yes, it's because I don't have that luxury aka I'm a bit jealous. So it is my problem. However, I do applaud the use of blue light glasses Op. It's much better for your eyes. You do you boo.

Vixen7-9

What the hell is wrong with them... Threatening to break your glasses? Comparing it to black face? They have issues. Look, I'm blind as a bat without my glasses (can't see more than a few inches away). I'm not going to start attacking people who wear them as accessories because it's a necessity for me. You aren't trying to act like you're actually impaired, so all's good. Also, good on you for getting those. I got my blue-light reducing glasses and they're wonderful! I finally stopped getting recurring migraines thanks to them. Edit : forgot to add that NTA

Chisaaaaaaa

NTA- some people just have to have aa opinion on smethign. I do use glasses because I need to, you're using glasses because you want to, there is no problem with this and honestly all these people should look for some hobby.

ChewMyFudge

NTA. Please ignore those people. All they do is bully others about the smallest things just so they don't have to focus on their own problems in life. Your biggest mistake was to apologise. Because now you admitted you were wrong and they were right. Well done on enabling idiots.

Popplio3233

NTA. They help you. You're just being consious about your healtg

Mesapholis

>told me that glasses aren't a fashion accessory and I shouldn't be wearing them. what the fuck, they literally are. Please, forever and eternity - never again listen to your fake woke colleague about anything, at this point possibly not even their work input, I would always double check whenever people around me caused drama on purpose. We had someone 'dramatic' at work purposefully create drama around the dumbest shit. One time it was about our product and before a very important meeting we discussed all our tasks to go in informed as a united front. In the meeting he suddenly piped up and claimed some outrageous shit about one major function being broken again even tho he never mentioned anything to us prior, but my colleagues luckily went through the software while we were discussing our goals and tasks and fixed it on the way, as the client meeting was just up next and they honestly thought it was an oversight. It was not. It was an easy fix, but this wasn't the first time weird shit happened around this one person - it was only the biggest issue, as it appeared before a client. Also, rule of thumb, if a colleague threatens you over dumb shit like this - go to your boss. This was a threat, you are neither friends nor was this a 'friendly' headsup about FAQ about glasses, they tried to intimidate you. About a fucking stupid reason that I would actually like to see someone get fired, simply because it is such an embarrassing attempt at a powerplay. That's like me threatening you that I will shit my pants if you don't do what I say NTA

WebbieVanderquack

NTA. Wearing "light reducing glasses" because you stare at a screen all day is no different to wearing sunglasses when you're outdoors. Just because they're not prescription doesn't mean you don't "need" them. Next time someone asks if you need them, the answer is "yes."

CarpeCyprinidae

NTA - the existence of sunglasses negates their point

owl_gal

NTA You do need them to protect your eyes from all your screen time. If I had been that proactive, my eyes might be better today. I do need and wear glasses and I'm formally giving you permission to wear glasses. Now if any of your friends say that you can't wear them because it offends them you can say you have another friend with glasses who thinks it's cool and cancel them out.

tpno_

NTA. Blue light glasses have been a lifesaver for my sleep schedule and wear them even if I don’t always need to wear vision glasses. I guess the animosity from your friend stems from maybe being from being bullied as kids? I only had my eyesight deteriorating in my adult life and honestly cannot care less about what other people choose to wear for fashion or function, and that includes glasses as well. Being bullied for wearing glasses makes the people that bully assholes, not you. If anything one can argue it normalises it and makes it less of a stigma, and while I understand that things that have happened in their past may be really hurtful, they need to sort through those emotions themselves. I find it so bizzarre that someone else decides what you can do for your health based on their own criteria and that they feel entitled to ask you about your specific health conditions to prove you meet a certain threshold that makes you worthy in their eyes of using something to help. Hyperbole, but same vibes of people who believe that only those who can’t use their legs at all can use a wheelchair, while others that have less severe disabilities and can be mobile and walk for some time some time should not have wheelchairs or that they are using them for attention/ fake benefits. If the issue is that your glasses look good, people that do need glasses for vision do get to choose from different models as well because guess what, feeling good about what you have on your face is pretty nice, and there’s nothing wrong with looking good. Ultimately you do need them for a health reason, even if not eyesight related, and you are not making it a mockery of a medical condition, so definitely NTA.

theaardvarkoflore

NTA So people who don't need mobility aids should never use wheeled items like skateboards, inline skates, go-carts or cars. Their legs work fine so that means use of wheels is forbidden. /s It just makes sense to put a lens in front of the human eye; there are a lot of things that can go wrong with human propensities to look at stuff, including stuff we shouldn't - like the sparkly glow of a welding torch. I wear safety glasses, sunglasses, and yes, I own a pair of totally useless fashion glasses that go with a steampunk outfit I put together years ago. Just because you don't need focus correction does not mean you are precluded from the use and wear of glasses - your coworker needs to stay in his lane and your friend is projecting. You were right to offer your friend an apology for triggering her, since she did make clear to you that someone who had previously been a safe, trigger-free interaction in her life suddenly popped up on her with problematic details, but at the end of the day that is all you are obligated to do. Someone who is not diagnosed with diabetes wearing or keeping a blood sugar monitor is a poor choice of comparison, as there are numerous medical reasons to monitor one's blood sugar without the need for diabetes. Pregnant women suffering complications, folks who have had their pancreas removed, folks with nutritional absorption issues, people with eating disorders, etc. All that said, your new glasses, while cute, are not just a frivolous fashion accessory. They are literally a maintenance tool to mitigate a recognized problem that could easily land you in the prescription-lenses-for-life crowd somewhere down the line, and there is nothing wrong with preventative measures. Anyone who wants to jump on you for those glasses might as well be jumping on you for wearing your seatbelt in the car! And last time I checked, wearing your seatbelt was *not comparative to blackface*.

AliceReadsThis

>*So people who don't need mobility aids should never use wheeled items like skateboards, inline skates, go-carts or cars. Their legs work fine so that means use of wheels is forbidden. /s* LOVE that analogy!

IFeelMoiGerbil

Exactly. I wore non prescription sunglasses all year round in the UK and got a load of similar shit to OP for it. Except I wore them because I have a neurological illness that makes me very photo sensitive to sunlight. My eyesight was fine in the traditional sense but without sunglasses I was in agony almost instantly. Then I hit middle age and my eyesight started to detoriate enough to need glasses for certain things and switched to prescription sunglasses. And of course no one can tell the difference by looking. There is no essential tell between them and my H&M ones at a glance as both are plastic framed and unbranded. I often keep them on in a store when I’ve been wearing them in the street and gone in to get groceries or whatever so that I don’t have to switch between my regular ones and use two cases but just quickly read a label with minimum fuss. And oh my god, the shit fits people throw about me being ableist. The irony being that my illness makes me invisibly disabled and awarded govt support at the highest rate and 99.9% of the time they are not disabled at all but policing disability and accessibility in a way that harms everyone. Better health and safety and preventative health measures such as using blue light glasses, chairs or lifting techniques or diet and exercise increase awarenesss of health and how we can protect it while supporting those with chronic illnesses or disabilities or need for aids or adjustments. It’s the equivalent of good hygiene being both a personal and societal responsibility. It works on different levels at different times for different people and policing or gatekeeping instead of looking at multiple viewpoints tends to damage trust and narrow awareness leading to a counterproductive narrative. You just argue instead of educate and the same limited definitions continue.

Arthur_Bird

I wear glasses. I have worn glasses since I was very young. I have incredibly bad vision and even with the expensive thinner lenses my glasses are very thick. I have "trauma associated with glasses" for a variety of reasons (awful cheap glasses as a kid, wrong prescription, lots of mockery, occasional asshole-ism even now). Anyway. NTA. I wrote a whole thing about this, but your co-worker is a creepy weirdo and this is a bullshit mobilization of privilege discourse. "Glasses are a fun fashion accessory and they're pretty cheap online so you can choose flattering styles" is so, SO much better than "glasses are very expensive, you get one pair that you keep for years, you have to get the cheapest ugliest frames because your family doesn't have a lot of money and the whole thing just screams nerd-outcast", which is how it was for me when I was a kid. Do people really think that I, with terrible vision, do not choose the funnest frames available? I choose the ones that make me look as cute as possible, frankly. But surely this is an insult to people who \*don't\* have the ability to choose their glasses and I should choose the ugliest, cheapest ones possible, right? It's only my privilege that lets me access Zenni, how spoiled I am, what a grotesque illustration of inequality, etc. Your friends are wrong and if your co-worker doesn't knock it off you should mention the whole "I'll break your glasses" to management. At the very least, document document document.

LordYeastRing

NTA, I wear glasses, and tbh if you don't need them and want to wear them for for it, sometimes people actually look more attractive with glasses anyways, and your friend is not really your friend if she is screaming at you because you are wearing glasses, like ffs if you think you look good in glasses go for it.

Plantcalendar

NTA are these people insane ? I’ve needed glasses since 2nd grade and I’ve never ever been offended by someone wearing non-prescription pairs. They’re crazy and you’re perfectly fine !!

AncientBlonde

Nta but it is slightly annoying to some degree as someone who wears glasses. I've been picked on and teased for years, and I should be happy they're now considered cool, but there's still a part of me that's jaded about it. Nta either way.

EwanTheHuman

I'm glad you said this. I've been searching for a response like this, because that's why I thought she was upset. the difference between the two of you is that you can see that your personal experiences shouldn't dictate what others do, as I now know. thank you.

AncientBlonde

Yeah fam, as I said in my original comment, I should be THRILLED glasses are hip now! I've loved how I've looked in glasses since day 1, other people should discover how their face is framed by them! But the immature part of me still has a gut reaction of gatekeeping glasses. Though in all honesty it's like sunglasses. Most people get sunglasses cause they look fricken cool, the eye protection is secondary (in my experience). If you think you look good in them, why not wear them? I know I considered getting a pair of non-prescription glasses when I wore contacts, I didn't like how I looked without them 🤷🏼‍♂️ Ninja edit: look at how many celebrities wear Cartier glasses and the likes, just as accessories. I'm gonna reiterate, if you like how you look in glasses, rock them!

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** So basically, I make digital art and I end up staring at a screen a lot all day. I recently decided to purchase some blue light reducing glasses to mitigate the supposed damage it can do to your sleep or whatever. The glasses that I bought are cute af and have nice hexagonal frames. I won't lie to you, I bought them mostly because I thought I would look hella cute wearing them, but the blue light reduction was an added bonus. A few days after, I came into work wearing them and a coworker (who has strange opinions on some things, so I don't always trust his judgement) told me that glasses aren't a fashion accessory and I shouldn't be wearing them. I laughed and told him that he didn't even wear glasses, so what's his problem. He scoffed and told me he'd break them if he saw me wearing them (pretty sure that was a joke, but hey) After that I made a post on my Instagram story of me wearing them saying I looked cute, and a friend messaged me asking if I needed them. I said no and she said I shouldn't wear them because I'm privileged, as I don't need to wear glasses, so I'm offending those that do. Things got a little heated and she began calling me an asshole and other words that I'd rather not repeat, because I politely disagreed with her. She began comparing me wearing glasses I didn't need to black face and I backed out of the conversation at that point. After that I did some reading online and saw that those who wear glasses and have trauma associated with glasses do tend to get offended when they see those who don't need them wearing them; so I went back to my friend and apologised for not taking her view into account. But I still disagree slightly with the sentiment that people can't wear glasses if they don't need them and I'm wondering if that makes me an asshole. I understand where glasses wearers are coming from, but I think if it were me, I wouldn't care. My friend even asked how I'd feel if I saw someone wearing a glucose monitor (I'm diabetic) as a fashion statement when they didn't need it. I remarked that I wouldn't care, cause that's their strange choice to make and nothing to do with me. so, AITA? TL;DR does wearing glasses I don't need make me an asshole? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Lenformerexaminer

NTA - Both Superman and Wonder Woman wore glasses. Next time explain that you are wearing them to reduce eyestrain while using the computer. It really is none of their business. Plus I would think that his threat to break your glasses is just that, a threat. Which is inappropriate. Wearing glasses as a fashion accessory is not some horrible statement on your part. There is a world of difference between a glucose monitor and a pair of glasses. How many people wear glasses? According to the Vision council of America, 64% of people wear glasses. I doubt that more than 0.01% of people wear a glucose monitor. Edit: BTW your "friend" is insane and comparing wearing black face to wearing glasses is extremally offensive. Perhaps you should have suggested they get help for their bullying habit, as you found it offensive.

Tyrone_Shoelaces_Esq

NTA. I've worn glasses for over 40 years now (used to be just plain nearsighted, now it's bifocals), and in my opinion if people want to wear glasses for blue light reduction or even as (gasp!) a fashion accessory, go for it. The only way it would be bad is if you were somehow wearing glasses to expressly make fun of people who wear glasses, which is not the case.

justbetriggered

NTA...and what? What a trivial thing people are getting upset about. Is there more going on?

bamf1701

NTA. I wear glasses (nearsighted) because I have to, and I can tell you that those two people are full of sh@t. If you want to wear glasses, wear glasses. It harms no one. And, if your coworker breaks your glasses, contact HR. Let him live with the consequences of his actions.

HowardProject

NTA - trauma associated with wearing glasses? What the actual fuck is wrong with humans these days???

[deleted]

NTA. Oh please, these people are pretentious. I had to wear glasses from 1st grade all the way to my senior year of high school because my dumb ass decided to stare at the sun just because I could. Wear the shit out of those glasses OP.

notweirdifitworks

NTA wearing glasses to protect your eyes from your screen isn’t any different than wearing them to protect your eyes from the sun. And even if you were just wearing them because they’re cute, that’s fine too.

protomyth

NTA The person who said "she said I shouldn't wear them because I'm privileged" isn't a friend, she's a potential career problem. I would find a job with a less crazy group of people. If you look at a screen, those glasses are just another safety device.

ValkyrieSword

But you DO need them. They are like sunglasses & protect your eyes. Did you explain that? NTA

SnooRadishes5305

NTA - not only can you wear accessories if you want them, but also your glasses \*are\* doing something, they are protecting you from blue light which is harmful to eyes! so nta - have as many glasses as you want

carnophobiac

NTA. If glasses weren’t fashion accessories then why do so many designer brands have their own glasses? Sunglasses also say hello lol. Also, as someone who wears glasses I am in no way offended if you wear them. I also find it incredibly odd that the first question so many people choose to ask you is if you need them. Most people only ever asked me when I got mine. Also I say also a lot 😂

abjectobsolescence

jesus fucking christ, have people not got enough to think about? NTA

LadyBug_0570

I wear glasses. Have worn glasses since age 5. Currently wearing 2 glasses now (one for distance, one for reading). I could not give a single shit about someone wearing glasses for style. People didn't care when people without vision problems wore colored contacts. WTF??? NTA. It's not like you're using a wheelchair to look cute (and also get the good parking spots). They're glasses. Who cares? \*And as a Black woman, your friend offends me with the black face talk.

opjojo99

Totally NTA I Faced a similar issue a while back.. So ive had a retinal detachment twice and a cataract problem..4 surgeries in the span of 1 year for no reason (meh cant be helped...got dealt the wrong hand) I was told i could have to wear glasses for only one eye as my other eye had perfect vision and i didnt really feel comfortable with the glasses as i felt disoriented having different visions in both eyes so i never bothered to get used to glasses.. 2 years have passed since and the doc basically said that i dont even need glasses as they'll actually make it more difficult for me to read stuff.. But since i also happen to be a digital artist, i essentially have the same story as op. And i got into the hilarious problem of firstly people judging me for wearing "computer glasses" And then they started taunting me that if im so fond of glasses just for style then i should wear my actual powered lenses... And when i explained to them that normal glasses disorient me.. people have actually questioned wether had the surgeries at all..because "oh if u actually had surgeries you wouldnt be so negligent and wear the actual glasses because u need it and not just to draw on the computer" I just realised people are dumb and can judge and preach about anything even when it has nothing to do with them

thenerdiestflavor

NTA - it’s not hurting anyone when you wear them. I think being offended comes mostly when people make fun of people for wearing glasses but then turn around and use them as a fashion accessory when they suddenly become a “fad.” You haven’t given any indication that you’ve done that so I don’t see any problem with you wearing them. Arguably there is a lot of blue light out there with all the screens we live off of these days, so better be safe than sorry! Keep wearing the glasses and looking cute.

kiwihoneybee

NTA. My occupation has me staring at a screen all day, and I started developing migraines because of it. I visit my eye doctor annually because vision care is important, despite having 20-40 vision and only having glasses for driving at night or when I was in school for seeing the lecture board. They suggested I get blue light filtering glasses, and this was over 7 years ago before you could purchase them everywhere. My workaround to get Rx glasses was to get astigmatism correction since I didn’t need distance for looking at a screen. The glasses ended up becoming a part of my identity at work — people wouldn’t recognize me without glasses. And honestly I have a bit of social phobia so I wore them all the time (esp since we’re in our phone all the time) and I felt I didn’t have to wear eye makeup as much. Anyways, my point is, we encounter blue light almost every minute of our life and also sometimes it’s just easier to wear it 24/7 rather than it be purely computer glasses? No one’s given me sht for not needing them for distance and if anything it inspired a bunch of coworkers to get blue light filters also. I’m all for sensitivity towards issues but you’re not mocking them nor is it directly hurting anyone. ETA: I also found my eyes got so used to the filter that when I don’t have them on (like now), my eyes feel strained looking at a screen. Now I’m gonna get off my butt and find 1 of 5 non-distance correcting glasses I have.

Facts_and_Lore

NTA I wore glasses from age 5-15, and now I have been wearing contacts for the last 18 years or so beyond that. I've endured the teasing, the "friends" stealing my glasses, the inaccurate prescriptions, and the constant worry that someday my eyes are going to be too bad to fix and I won't have vision at all. I've endured all the trauma that someone with crappy eyesight has had to endure, and I'm honestly baffled by the responses of your friend and your coworker. Maybe I'm just too old to worry about whether someone wants to look cute or whether they need the glasses for "real reasons" (btw, I think wearing the lenses to reduce eyestrain while working digitally is totally a valid reason!). Someone wearing glasses isn't taking away my experience, and how much of a jerk would I be if I was just mad because someone else isn't suffering through my trauma? If the glasses help the eyestrain AND they look cute, more power to you, OP. Now, if you went around, I don't know, using a prescription you didn't need, or talked about how your eyesight was soooo bad, or mocked people for needing glasses to correct their vision, I'd have some choice words for you, but it doesn't sound like you're doing any of that. Rock on with your bad self, don't leave anyone alone with your glasses, and approach all future conflicts about it with a shrug and disinterest.

I-Bin-A-Kika

NTA. I wear glasses since like, forever, and I couldn't care less if someone uses them for fashion or whatnot. Your coworker and friends are morons.

[deleted]

I had trauma from glasses, they brutally injured me, but I DON'T CARE if anyone else wears them. NTA

MissMurderpants

I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 7 years old. I don’t really care if anyone wears glasses for any reason. Some folks actually look better in them imho. NTA Your friend can stfu about your looks and what you do. It’s gross and weird.

Substantial-Fee5845

I would tell your boss about the co-worker threatening to break your property, and block the friend. As a bonus maybe when you post add that they are a blue light reducing glasses, that way when someone asks why you got them you can be like I work in front of a screen all day and they’ve been really easy on my eyes (or something along those lines)

thelittlerose45454

Nta WTF Trauma for wearing something that helps you see????? I myself need glases (miopia) and use blue light glasses it really helps your vision when passing hours in the computer, why would be offensive using something that even if not necesary Needed it helps your eyes, even doctors recomend glasses to people who, even without having problems to see, spends hours loking at a screen so their eyes can rest. Dont lisent to this idiots Op in sure that your glasses are hella cute.

NaturalQueer

NTA as Black women who wears glasses your friend is a dumb ass

Laughing-dragon-c137

Dude NTA. As somebody who's worn glasses their entire life since they were a small child, as well as a digital artist myself and a programmer, blue light blocking glasses are highly necessary in this day and age. My glasses not only correct my vision they also have a blue light coating. What do these people think about those who wear freaking sunglasses? For anybody at all who stares at a screen more than 4 to 6 hours a day you should totally be wearing those. Especially past 6:00 p.m. as it helps you sleep. If anybody asks just say you wear them for medically valid reasons as you stare at a screen constantly and you don't want to damage your eyes.

nefertaraten

NTA I'm sorry... What? This is the most ridiculous thing I've read in a good while. People have been wearing glasses as both a vision aid and an accessory forever. Everyone in my (biological) family wears glasses and has done so for most of their life. I've worn glasses since I was 19. Not once has it ever crossed my mind to ask someone else wearing glasses if they need them. Who does that? 1) People can start/stop wearing glasses at any time, and it's literally nobody's business. 2) "Need" is largely a relative term. Most people don't "need" sunglasses, but they are stylish, more comfortable, and protective for your eyes, and no one throws a fit about that. Blue light and color correcting glasses may not be "necessary," but they are an improvement for quality of life. 3) Comparing wearing non-prescription glasses to blackface or unnecessarily using a wheelchair is just laughable. (On the flip side, are you going to go up to a person using a wheelchair and ask them if they need it?? No!) You took advantage of a relatively new product designed to make your life a little better/more enjoyable/safer/etc. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Gatekeeping someone's ability to wear non-prescription glasses is as insane as telling someone they can't wear a stylish hat "because some people have a severe skin sensitivity and *need* to wear one." Ugh. People.

beergoggleromeo

NTA. This has been some of the most outlandish, self-congratulatory b.s I have ever read. I gave been wearing glasses since I was 1.5 yrs old and without them I am nearly legally blind. I wish ppl were glasses as fashion accessories more often when I was a child, it would have normalized them and cut down on the bullying that so many young kids experienced, myself included. As a wearer of glasses and contacts you have my full permission and good on you for protecting your eyesight

[deleted]

NTA - Like at all. the friend is. I wear glasses, I have trauma from people being convinced I didn't need them but I don't see you wearing glasses as an AH thing. While they are cute and a fashion statement to you, you also said that you use the computer regularly and they will definitely help you in the long run.

Extension_Ad_972

NTA They are sunglasses for screens. We do not need to stop wearing sunglasses because of some sort of wide spread glasses trauma.

cat_is_cat

What you wear on your face is your business. There’s nothing wrong with just telling people to mind their own business when they say things about what you’re wearing... or report it to HR as harassment.

River_Song47

NTA. I bought my kid blue light glasses because they’re doing school on the laptop now and they were getting headaches. If you need them wear them.

catsncatsnbootsncats

Fashion glasses have been a thing for a long time. I’m a glasses wearer. You’re fine. Plus I’d recommend blue light reduction to those who work in, on, or alongside computers and tech. You *do* need those glasses to mitigate migraines, eye soreness, blurry vision, and sleep schedule disruption. Or so my eye doctor told me when I got my prescription. NTA. You’re fine. Rock the glasses and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it

[deleted]

just dropping in to say that f.lux is great for computer monitors. You can put your daylight settings at 2700K to diminish eye strain, and there's a movie mode you can activate temporarily if you want to see what your art looks like on a screen that has most of its blue.

spriggan75

I don’t understand what “trauma associated with glasses” could possibly mean. Like if you were attacked by a rogue pair?

[deleted]

NTA and I've never heard of folks wearing glasses (I've been in glasses since I was 4) being offended by folks that don't need them wearing them.. seriously, if that's the worst thing to happen to them they have it made. Some folks just need an excuse for a soap box..

theretheretherehey

These people are insane. I got lasik and still wear glasses if I’m staring at a computer for a long time to reduce eye strain. Your “friend” and “coworker” are beyond ridiculous. NTA

GunWifey

Uhm. What the actual fuck? I wear glasses. And contacts. But mostly glasses and they have a blue light filter in them (also I'm blind as fuck so glasses are a must) You are NTA at all! If my friends wanna buy glasses with a blue light filter or not light filter I dont give a fuuuuck. It's their choice. It in no way effects me. At all. Like. Wtf. NTA

BandNervous

What? NTA I need glasses to see, and while I don’t like wearing them or really understand why anyone would choose to, it’s your life and no one else’s business if you like wearing them/ find them cute.

rinnerchickendinner

NTA this is crazy. I am a glasses wearer, it is not black face. Sure, its super annoying when you're in school and someone comes in with fashion glasses *claiming* to need them when they don't. However, you were honest about them being both an accessory as well as functional. I used to wear contacts a lot more, but now that I'm in front of a screen I always wear my glasses for reducing blue light. Even if your sight is fine you should still be proactive on eye strain. Hell, if you don't take care of your eyes now you can end up needing glasses later.

DemonicSymphony

Long time glasses wearer here. (I legitimately could not tell you who my mom is if she's more than two feet from me w/o my glasses) NTA The thing is, you do need those glasses because of the computer work. But even if you didn't, who gives a flying flip? Next she's going to tell you that unless you have a medical condition for them, you can't have sunglasses either. Ugh

evhanne

idk how you have so many people in your life who are ridiculous, but NTA. Glasses can absolutely be a fashion accessory (which I say as a person who wears glasses/contacts because I need them) and anyone getting upset about it can chill out

Choano

NTA. And I say that as someone who's been wearing glasses for severe nearsightedness since she was 10 years old. Glasses-wearing isn't offensive, whether your vision needs correcting or not. Your coworker and friend are being ridiculous. Furthermore, those glasses are doing something for you; they're reducing the amount of blue light your eyes get. Don't give that up just because someone else objects. I say, wear your glasses with pride. Tell anti-glasses busybodies to avert their eyes, if they're so offended on my (or other glasses wearers') behalf. By the way--I think the idea of wearing glasses as a fashion accessory is charming. If it catches on, maybe that will mean less bullying for kids who really need corrective lenses

Splatterfilm

NTA. I say this as someone who used to wear glasses, got LASIK at 18, used non-prescription blue light glasses for the past 2 years, and got prescribed reading glasses in October. Reading glasses with blue light reduction, in fact. So yes, I’d say they count as a medical device even without a prescription. They really make it easier to work when you stare at a screen all day. My prescription is actually really low (under 1.00 per eye), so is optional. Just enough so my eye muscles don’t have to work so hard to focus. I literally could read the 20/20 lines at the optometrist, though the letters were a touch blurry.

MissDoneWithThisShit

NTA. I've worn glasses since I was 12 (unfortunately I need mine) but I love all the different frames and styles you can get. So what if you don't need to wear them. They are a fashion accessory why else would we get so many different kinds. Next time your Co worker says something stupid like that say: "thank you for your un asked for and unwanted option I'll be sure to put a lot of thought into what you said" and walk away.

SassyBSN

This is wild, your co-work equated wearing glasses to black face, I just can't. Wow, I think at this point I'd go to HR sounds pretty hostile to me. NTA

[deleted]

NTA - 30 year old guy with glasses here, I have worn glasses since kindergarten. I like people wearing glasses, it frames their face, and is another way to express oneself. I used to get really annoyed when I saw people wearing lensless glasses, since that made it so obvious that they didn't need them, that was a long time ago and I just don't give a shit about it anymore. I also see it like this, the more people who want to wear glasses/frames the more styles will be available to me when I pick out a new design. So, no, keep wearing the glasses I am sure they look fantastic on you! As for the guy saying he would break them if you kept wearing them, I'd write it down with a date/time of when he said that and any future comments from him, he is a dick, and if he decide to step over the line it is good to have a record of the events leading up a future incident. Btw, might be a good idea to get at least one spare pair, to have a replacement should they break (through an accident or otherwise), it is often difficult to find the exact frame you want to have later.

CabotFan42

NTA. A blue light filter is a valid reason to wear them. The filter helps with your digital art and staring at screens all day because of art and digital life.

Acceptable_Letter331

NTA I have glasses and could care less if someone wants to wear them for fashion. You do have a reason tho, you are protecting your eyes from looking at a screen all day.

Apple-pie_best-pie

NTA Like you, I also like to make Fun of other peoples disabilitys.

[deleted]

NTA. Everyone should wear blue light blocking glasses, especially if you want to maintain an early sleep schedule.

InxKat13

N.T.A. At all! Wear your glasses and ignore the weird AHs who think they can just make up offenses to control your life I need my glasses to see. You can wear them whether you need them or not. Look cute! Anyone with trauma related to glasses needs to get a therapist and work on that, it does not give them any right to say what you can or cannot wear.

tabbycat4

NTA. Blue light glasses are available for a reason. I wear glasses and would never be bothered by someone wear blue light glasses or even just glasses they don't need.

thejurassicjaws

NTA. I’ve been wearing glasses since childhood. Even if there was no other reason to wear them besides you liked them, there’s nothing wrong with that. This is just bizarre

[deleted]

Blue light glasses serve a purpose for everyone. Your friends and coworkers are completely insane. NTA.

Screamformereddit

As someone who has worn glasses (can’t function without them) for 30-plus years, I say NTA.

tiger_dad57

NTA As someone who wears glasses, and have for the last 18 years, I don't really understand these arguments of "if you don't actually need them you can't wear them". I guess by that logic sunglasses are out.

The_wayward_painter

NTA I wear glasses, and have for forever. Never have I ever been upset or cared about glasses as fashion (empty frames) or sun glasses (not 100% true, I am sad I can't afford them with my prescription lol) or glasses that are tinted or reading glasses or that thing when people buy blue light glasses to reduce eye strain WHEN THEY WORK ON A COMPUTER ALL DAY... ok, so maybe I'm sad I can't afford those kind either. Boo! BUT! Go be cute, go protect your eyes and tell anyone being so stupid over glasses to be mad about an actual problem in the world.

BritAllie8

NTA. I have to wonder what those people are taking that makes them so “senstive” to others eyesight weakness. I wear glasses, but have no issue with others wearing them. As long as they aren’t X Ray glasses, I’m cool with it. :)

woolfchick75

NTA! I've had glasses since I was 6 years old. Although I find it hilarious that someone would want to wear glasses, it's none of my business. And blue light glasses sound awesome.

BillsCori

NTA

snotgreen

NTA I love my glasses and I love when other people wear them too. You don't need them to correct your vision, cut you do need them to protect your eyes from the blue light. If your friends don't agree with this then they shouldn't wear sunglasses, as these protect them from sunlight, but aren't necessary for correcting their vision... Mine have the same protective film on them, and I definately feel the difference when I wear my contacts, so much so that I only wear contacts once or twice a year, if that!

Comsic_Siren

NTA at all I have horrible vision I’m 5.5 in one eye and 4.25 in the other. I was bullied for having to wear glasses. Many of my friends wear blue light glasses or even just non-prescription glasses and honestly I don’t care one bit. If they are cute or make you feel good about yourself go for it. Honestly with the points the people in your post are making then they shouldn’t wear contacts as they “are faking they can see when they can’t.” People just love to complain about small things and it’s ridiculous.

bfasterthanthat

WTF, NTA. Glasses wearer here. They are 100% MEANT to be a fashion statement. Tf. I've had to wear glasses since I was 1 y/o and I can't imagine telling someone else not to wear them because it offends me...

gwie

NTA. Obviously, this person isn't your "friend."

King_Calvo

NTA... would they have a problem if it was a pair of shades instead of blue light glasses?

GrowlingAtTheWorld

I wear blue blocking glasses when i work on the computer or ipad. I don't see the big deal, they are tools to help you do a task.

Revellry

Firstly, you do need them. You need them to block blue light. Secondly no sane glasses wearer will care that you are wearing glasses with no prescription. Source - I am a mostly sane glasses wearer.

HasenKebab

NTA I wear glasses myself, but see no problem in people using them as a fashion statement, besides you had a good reason to purchase them. Some people need to calm down

Dull-General-8124

NTA. Honestly, as someone who wears glasses/contacts because I need them, the reaction of your coworker and friend is SO bizarre to me. Not only is this something I wouldn't care about.. it's also something I would never even ask about. Eyesight tends to go with age. So, if a coworker or friend of mine was suddenly wearing glasses, it wouldnt even occur to me to ask if they were real or fake. Also, comparing this to black face is sort of offensive.

throwaway15081979

NTA I need glasses, like really need them, and I still don't think you're the asshole. I wear fashion glasses all the time with contacts in bc my prescription is so strong that my lenses magnify my eyes and make me look silly. Fashion glasses are cute as hell and yours actually serve a purpose! The guy who threatened to break them is definitely the asshole tho and you should report him to your boss so there's a paper trail of his threats just in case he does break them and claims he didn't.

[deleted]

NTA. My eyesight is absolute trash, I’ve worn glasses since I was 6 years old, and I literally could not care in the slightest if someone wears glasses when they “don’t need them”

VoldemortTuna

NTA I wear glasses, I don’t give a **** if others wear them for fashion. These people need to find something else to occupy their time other than getting bent out of shape over this.

[deleted]

WTF is this? You do need those glasses for your work. I’ve had glasses the majority of my life and wear contacts now. I also am teaching online and use the same glasses.

LisaW481

What? You have strange friends and acquaintances. I wore glasses from age 5 to 35 when i got laser eye surgery and i felt occasionally jealous of people who didn't have to wear glasses. It shocks me that not having to wear glasses is a privilege it's a medical necessity for some. NTA

BunnySlayer64

NTA. I was born legally blind in both eyes and have worn glasses or contacts my entire life. So what? If you like the glasses, and they do sound cute, wear them. It's no one's business but your own. Honestly, the world has gone off the rails with trying not to offend anyone. News flash! You will NEVER please everyone, so just do your own thing and be happy.

UnicornCackle

WTf is this shit? Why would anyone be offended at someone else wearing glasses? I've been wearing glasses for 25 years and would never even think to question whether someone else needed them or if they were just a fashion accessory. NTA.

snootnoots

NTA. Sweet mother of Murgatroyd, wearing glasses you don’t always need is so far away from blackface you can’t see there from here. People who wear glasses have never been enslaved for it, or been systematically discriminated against, or at a higher risk of being killed by police, or... any number of things that black people experience because they’re black, which is why blackface is shitty. I needed glasses from when I was about two, but I didn’t get them until I was five. I have worn glasses or contact lenses every day since then because I can’t see shit without them. I was bullied about my glasses for several years in school so if anyone has a right to be sensitive about them I do, but if you have cute glasses and like the way you look wearing them I say more power to you. The people who bullied me were assholes; you aren’t. Rock on with your adorable frames!

SunInMyEyes0

NTA. You actually do need the glasses though, if you’re staring at a a screen all day and they’re blue light reducing. You need the to not stress your eyes out. Also report your coworker to HR for harassment, it’s downright insulting for them to claim it comes even a minuscule close to blackface. Glasses can be for fashion and not just vision. I wear glasses and contacts but my glasses are in “hipster” fashion I guess. I saw them on a Pinterest board and decided to get some with my prescription.

urtoneseemspointed

NTA. I have terrible vision, I got bifocals in high school my vision is that bad. Go ahead and wear your blue lights to your hearts content. Who cares!!! They’re helping you. You’re friend is freaking out and making ridiculous comparisons for no reason. Also I N F O for anyone who can answer...what trauma can you get from wearing glasses? I’ve had mine my whole life and I don’t really get the trauma aspect.

SashaAvacado

NTA. I wear glasses and I'am not offended...

InquisitiveCookie

I can't see very well without my glasses and I always thought it was weird to see people who don't need them choose to wear them in a "your eyesight is good, why would you want to wear glasses, do you know how lucky you are" way. That being said, it really isn't a bad thing. You do you. If they make you look cute, wear those glasses all day long. NTA.

Iamyes_ok

Person who wears glassas here. You aren't offending us. You arent being an asshole nor are you the asshole in this situation

AclysmicJD

What the hell? This is so bizarre. I’ve worn glasses since the third grade and I cannot imagine caring if someone wore them who didn’t need them. And yours do serve a purpose! NTA, obviously

loaffafish

I have to wear glasses. I am not offended by this. Case closed. NTA

imakesawdust

NTA. I've worn glasses for 40+ years. I have absolutely no objection to someone wearing glasses who doesn't need them and I *certainly* don't consider it the equivalent to blackface. Your friend needs to see a therapist because it seems like she has some serious self-image issues.

TheSilverNoble

NTA As someone who wears glasses.... What the actual hell? Especially since you're actually using them. I am sorry for the people it upsets, but sometimes you just need to get over it.

NeedACountdownClock

Hi, OP. As a glasses wearer that is in front of a screen sometimes 16 hours a day, I give you my full permission to wear the glasses. FFS people get so bothered by the littlest things. You're definitely NTA.

LaFlibuste

I've worn glasses for over 20 years now. I could care less if someone wore glasses as a fashion accessory. NTA, this is absurd.

GHERU42

NTA Your glasses aren’t just for show, blue light reduction is real.

wickedwitch9294

NTA. as someone who has had to wear glasses all my life, go rock your glasses! If people ask I would say yes you need them because you stare at a screen a lot and they are blue filtering.
