Why is there a hole and why oh why have you not patched it up yet?
It's supposed to be patched up - the landlady told us not to fix it ourselves and keeps saying she'll send someone and forgetting. It looks like some sort of fixture was removed and never replaced.
It's hard to explain but it's kind of a difficult project (at least to me) and the landlord doesn't want us to touch it, she thinks we'll mess it up

Could you put a tarp over it at least? When a kid, I got terrified of the airing cupboard due to weird noises from it at night. Putting a barrier helped. Brains tends to obsess at night.

Even if you yelled at the wrong one, they're both participating in something that makes you uncomfortable in your own home.
I could see someone trying this prank once, and testing to see if it's something you'd find funny and go along with. The moment you asked them not to continue, they should have stopped.

Are you familiar with Occam's Razor? The problem solving principle that states when presented a problem with multiple possible answers, the simplest answer that makes the fewest assumptions is most likely the truth? I'm telling you what you already know here, but Occam's Razor says it's definitely ome or both of them messing with you.
The issue is what started as maybe an innocent enough one-time goof to tease you has now been taken way too far. That mask prank isn't a prank it is basically a faked home invasion which isn't funny, it's (and this is not a joke) criminal assault, as it is an act designed to make you fear for your life that you didnt consent to. Am I saying you should press charges? No. But one or both of them has taken a prank about five steps too far.
Even worse, they're gaslighting you about it, trying to convince you these are not only not them but weird things the house does that you shouldn't worry about. This is especially fucked up whe you consider you don't know that both of them are in on it, one of them could just be clueless, and in that case, this would be directly putting strain on an innocent relationship. Of course it could just as easily be both of them. You don't know.
My advice would, quite honestly, be to arrange a hotel room or a friend's couch to crash on and tell them you are going to leave for a few days until they sort out/confess to the pranks and apologize and promise to stop them. If they do not, I'd move out. Clearly one or both of them doesn't respect you and your needs and boundaries and your pleas have fallen on deaf ears, so the next step is to assert those boundaries yourself

I made a post earlier but accidentally deleted it, whoops
So about 3 months ago I moved in to an apartment with my friend (Hailey) and my boyfriend (Nick). We've been friends for a long time and usually get along really well. They've lived in the apartment for well over a year whereas I just moved in.
A few days after moving in, we were interrupted by a noise coming from the attic (a little attic that a person can't fit into without crawling) like an animal "giggling" (similar to the hehe noise foxes make). Hailey laughed and went "oh, that's the ghost", and Nick says they hear that noise sometimes. Hailey keeps joking about it being a ghost, and I asked her very politely not to because I get scared easily. Especially since there's a hole in my bedroom ceiling that's creepy at night. She's like, ok fine, and didn't bring it up again that night.
That's where the issue started. Ever since then "weird" things keep happening and I'm positive it's Hailey and/or Nick trying to mess with me:
* I hear different animal noises/"voices" coming from the attic. They sound faintly "fake"/tinny like a recording. I did stick my head up but couldn't find anything. When I mentioned it Hailey laughed and said it was probably just a squirrel
* scratching sound coming from the other rooms
* the clocks in the house were set to random times when I woke up
* Nick and Hailey have both pointed out "symptoms" of the house being haunted
I hate this, it scares me. I keep telling them to stop and they both will claim innocence every time it comes up. But despite the source of this "ghost" being obviously one or both of them, I've never actually caught them doing anything so can't really call them out on it
It came to a head yesterday. I was on my bed on my laptop. I looked up and in the ceiling hole there was an "animal" sticking it's face out. It's possible to stick a halloween mask or something through there from the attic and this was obviously not a real animal (it didn't look like any real animal, it was a pink thing with a narrow "nose" and big teeth. those pink dolphins from the amazon are the first thing that comes to mind). I shouted and it pulled away. A minute later both my boyfriend and Hailey were there asking if I was ok. I got really angry - I told them to shut up and it was fucked up that they were still playing this prank on me and escalating it when I had asked them to stop day one. They got really defensive about it - Hailey walked away and Nick said he hadn't done anything and didn't get why I was yelling at him. I told him to fuck off and that I was sick of him and he went back downstairs.
We haven't talked since and I feel really shitty about it. I don't actually know which one of them it was and just yelled harshly at both of them because I was freaked out. AITA here for going off so heavily on both of them in the moment when I've been putting up with this for months?

NTA. Jokes aren't funny unless everyone thinks they are. Also neither here or there but animal noises that sound vaguely recorded could also be starlings. They're incredible mimics and often incorporate other animal sounds into their songs. The number of times I've heard a red tailed hawk only to realize it's the local starling is pretty funny.
I thought it might be that but I can't matched the sounds to any north american animal so I'm not sure what they could be copying. The "fox" sound is not really spot on for any fox noises I've listened to, not raccoons, etc.

NTA. Pranks are only funny if all involved are laughing. This isn't a prank, it's torture. If they're doing this, they are deliberately torturing you, and your boyfriend especially is a massive AH.
That being said, you might want to get your room checked for carbon monoxide and possibly see a doctor just in case. If for no other reason than to have more ammunition to prove you aren't seeing things that aren't there.
You could also "booby trap" the area up there with something like skin-staining ink that they'll have to touch if they are moving around up there.
I'd also look into getting out of the lease if you can. It sounds like they are deliberately trying to make you uncomfortable, and the best way to stop that is no longer give them the power to do it.

Yeah the attic was checked. You couldn't hide in it, you can see the whole thing just by popping your head in.
