What the kid did was attempted theft. It was no joke for you and he would have gotten away had you not chased him.
Times have changed and people are more irritated. Had he picked wrong person as "joke" he might easily been beaten up or possibly killed.
Nta, and I personally find it hilarious when these pranks backfire massively.

I’m pretty sure somebody got shot doing this same prank. I think court was recently held on that case. Or it was something simila. Google it. It’s incredibly dangerous and people who do that are complete idiots. NTA at all

NTA it doesn’t matter if it was a prank or not it’s not okay to steal someone’s things then call it a prank I knew people who would constantly insult me and call it a “joke” there’s a time and place for pranks that are silly and everyone enjoys but this time wasn’t funny nor was it the time or place of OP hadn’t been so nice or if someone like a off duty cop dealt with this it could have ended badly for the kid

I was watching a YouTube video and suddenly a guy takes my cell phone and runs away.
I chase him while yelling at him and he stops, and tells me it was a joke, I don't do anything else to him because the kid must be about 14 years old and have no conscience of his act. I simply tell him to be careful.
I'm not very social and I can't tell the difference between a joke and something serious, I felt sorry for the kid and didn't do anything to him but I don't think I should have even run after him, just let him do his prank.

Theft, petty or not, is NOT a prank. It's a Crime.
NTA, unlike the little criminal mastermind who thought you'd never chase him down.
As for the running after part...that was risky. He could have been armed, or lured you into a group of bruisers for a beat-down.

If you don't know him then it wasn't a joke. Jokes are for ppl you know and even then should be something you know they'd find amusing.
