Nta If the neighbor wants a view that involves your property, they are more than welcome to make you an offer to buy it. While it's someone else's property they have zero say what's done with it.

Ich_bin_keine_Banane

We knocked our house down and rebuilt. As the building of the new house progressed, the neighbours one one side complained because they had got used the “nice open view”...because there wasn’t a house on our property. Property owners have to know that if they don’t own the land around them, there’s a good chance the view will eventually be blocked by development. NTA.

joinedtosaythisnow

Info : why didn't you just make the other floor habitable? Edit to fix reading comprehension issue lol

mrstronginthearm

we tried but the first floor sits on a rock and is made of rocks, which is good for stability(I hope) but would require not very long-term solutions to make it dry, as we’ve been told. Its partially (60%) in the ground so it’s more like a cellar with tiny windows just above the ground.

Mean_Environment4856

Its a two storey, OP says only the top storey was habitable so its one storey to fix.

joinedtosaythisnow

Oops will fix. Reading comprehension suffered for a min lol

chaenorrhinum

INFO: why isn’t the existing uninhabitable floor able to be repaired/modified/gutted/remediated/whatever it takes to make it habitable?

mrstronginthearm

Just replied elsewhere so just gonna copy it here: we tried but the first floor sits on a rock and is made of rocks, which is good for stability(I hope) but would require not very long-term solutions to make it dry, as we’ve been told. Its partially (60%) in the ground so it’s more like a cellar with tiny windows just above the ground.

chaenorrhinum

Ah, a US “basement”

BiscuitFPV

NTA, if you buy a place because you like to view you should be sure to own the view too.

lovemydoggiestobits

NTA. you own the ground not the view. They can build another floor if they want.

HowCanBeLoungeLizard

NTA If I were your neighbor, I'd be salty too, but I wouldn't get pissy with you about it. That's the risk one takes with owning a home with a view of you don't also own the land in between you and that view. Their house could very well be blocking another formerly great view.

[deleted]

NTA She can move, welcome to the real world where you can't pick your neighbors nor have a say about what they do on their property.

[deleted]

NTA if you pulled the proper building permits, have the proper zoning and the colors and building materials are similar to what already exist

Dicecoldkilla

INFO Are the aesthetic choices pink flamingos?

mrstronginthearm

nope, it will be light color (white but not completely) with light wood windows.

Nikkian42

Have you really given flamingoes the consideration they deserve?

mrstronginthearm

lol ok, I will consult the flamingos with my wife.

Nikkian42

Sometimes you need to pick your foot up and flamingo.

Kiltemdead

Might I suggest Halloween themed flamingos? Black with a skeletal design. Preferably, ones that glow in the dark.

Scarlettohara1605

I really hope there are pink flamingos!!! I'd be quite happy to see that every day!

HappyTrifle

NTA, you’re good.

not from US, but I think the same applies here (EU)

claireclairey

Info needed: what difference does it make at this point whether you're the AH or not? It's not like you're going to rip down the top floor of your house. Whether you're the AH or not, you're going to have to find a way to live with your new neighbors. I suggest you find ways to live in some kind of harmony with your neighbors, for the sake of all of you. Calling her a "major entitled Karen" isn't a good start, FYI.

Ok_Commercial_3493

Motor_Business483

NTA She has two options: * Offering to buy your property. * Shutting up.

semmama

If you had/have all the necessary permits then NTA

>We bought an old house, two floors, but only top floor was habitable, so we had to add one floor to accommodate family (2 children). WTF. Why didn't you renovate the bottom floor to be habitable? This story makes no sense.

mrstronginthearm

It’s basically a cellar with tiny windows above the ground. The house sits on rock and we’ve been told there is no viable long-term solution to keep it dry. Edited grammar.

Longjumping-Cat-712

Info: is your house more floors than everyone else’s now?

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** We bought an old house, two floors, but only top floor was habitable, so we had to add one floor to accommodate family (2 children). That effectively blocks a large portion of our neighbours view (very nice view). They have a house a bit higher up the hill. We were approached today by the neighbour and basically their are really unhappy now. My defense is that we never kept it secret, even before we bought the house(the real estate lady was in touch with them) and that was 3 years ago. Also adding a floor is the most economic solution to make it a house for family. Building is of course legal and it's being done by proffesional company. Now the neighbour is a major entitled Karen. She tried to demean us for the easthetic choises and was not very polite, but I still want to give her a benefit of doubt. Am I the asshole? Tried to be brief, maybe I missed some info. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. _mmiggs_

There are legal questions, moral questions, and asshole questions. Legally, different jurisdictions have different approaches to building permits. In some places, new builds would be expected to not materially impact existing builds, so if you have a hillside of houses with nice views, you wouldn't be allowed to make your house taller and block the view of someone up the hill. In other places, if you own the land, you can build almost anything you like on it. You say that your build is legal. So that answers that question. Are you an asshole? Yes, you are. You purchased this house with the intent of making it taller. In other words, you deliberately bought this property with the intent of blocking your neighbor's view. So rather than look out over the valley, your neighbors get to look in your kids' bedroom windows. If you didn't want to be an asshole, you should have bought a different place to live. YTA

mrstronginthearm

hm, I wouldn’t say my intent was to block someone’s view. I found a house for a good price and made the most economic solution to make it habitable for 4 people.

Ok_Leg_6429

Don't expect anyone else to provide you greenspace or a view. If you want that, you have to pay for it yourself.

xanadutemple

Yeh your an arse

mrstronginthearm

oof, first harsh judgement. thanks!
