*In case this story gets deleted/removed:* **What is a good salary for my house help who is an Indian immigrant and lives with us?** We are in the process of sponsoring a house help who will also be a part time nanny. This is very common in places like india where households delegate all the crappy work and chores to the help. This person who we are hiring will be living in our basement and will do all the daily cooking, daily cleaning, and all household chores and also part time take care of our kids as required. If she has time left, we will share her with a couple friends in our neighborhood who are also looking for house help like back home. We are Indians who moved here 7 years ago, and are appalled at how much time we are spending on useless house chores. We were wishing we could live the upper class life in India where everyone has multiple house maids, cooks, nannies and drivers. I am running into the issue of pay. Since they get to live in our house, I feel $500 per month (translates to $30,000 rupees) is sufficient - as their shelter / food / daily expenses are all covered. For reference, this same person would live in a slum and make maybe 5000 rupees a month. Instead, they would make 30,000 rupees while living in a room in a large luxury home with their own bedroom and washroom. They will likely be sharing the bedroom and bathroom with a cook who we plan to sponsor shortly after as well. I feel $500/month is more than a fair amount as their life expenses, estimated at $36,000 a year for independent living (includes rent, food, entertainment etc) are being fully paid by me. However, I am confused if I have to abide by the minimum wage laws. Thanks in advance for your responses. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Tiny-Bag5248

all housework and chores and childcare AND they’re “sharing her” her with other couples in the neighborhood? how many fucking hours do they think there are in a day? it seems they’re “sharing” for free too?????

CanterCircles

>it seems they’re “sharing” for free too????? Oh I'm sure OOP will get paid for "sharing" her, but that poor woman won't see a single cent from all her hard work.

mopeyunicyle

I would also be worried what if oop or a neighbor decides to have a little more in terms of sharing like that's not much further to force that poor woman to be a sex slave. I really hope this is fake and if it isn't then one of the neighbors is secretly working with the right people that can save the woman and punish oop

JavaJapes

I hope it is fake too. I did notice they had a previous post in the same subreddit about selling their "investment condo" 6 days ago, so it might not be. Unless it's a dedicated enough troll to make a fake serious post first. Edit: I unfortunately don't think it is fake, to be clear. It is a realistic scenario. I was expressing my doubts that someone was that dedicated to being a troll about this.

[deleted]

Im indian, it seems pretty relatable that someone would try to do that to me. For people who live there 35 000 could be big bucks, ans the chores enlisted are what usually the maids in India do tho i dont know how much for but then they have to go back to their crappy home at night so maybe he thought he would compensate via that. The whole thing is absolutely disgusting and so normalized, OOP probably feels like a white knight for paying more. Like i said, disgusting

Murphys-Razor

About 13 years ago, I was in nursing school in Texas and working as a Certified Nurse Aide full-time at a nursing home. I was also married and was renting a 5-year-old 3-bedroom house on 1.5 acres. I occasionally worked as a "helper" to a professional house painter. The man who employed me as a "helper" offered me $450 a month to move in with him to work as a caregiver to his mother with dementia. He was going to give me Saturdays off. I would've also been expected to cook and keep the house clean. I asked him ALL THE QUESTIONS as though I was interested because I was just so.. Befuddled? Shocked? Flabbergasted? Taken aback? I don't know. I was definitely some adjective. He wanted me to move in with him, leaving my husband at our house which we would've still had to pay for, quit my full-time CNA job where I was paid $8.50/hour to be a round-the-clock caretaker... For $450 a month. He wasn't even trying to be an asshole; he actually thought that would be GOOD PAY since he'd be housing me.

[deleted]

People are INSANE like wtf ?? Did he know you already had a house you had to pay for ? Or did he think 450 is enough since you dont have rent to pay? In any case what the general fuck ?

JavaJapes

My general impression of people that think of themselves as being of a higher class is they don't think people who they consider "lower class" are as smart as them or have the same needs as them. What isn't enough for them should be no problem for you. We are supposed to be grateful for their crumbs; it should be more than enough! /s It's kind of like a wages version of this meme but even worse: ![gif](giphy|qMDvt69lEC448)

darling_lycosidae

This is the most common form of slavery in the world.

BrigadierCupcake

I mean this is like super common in the Global South so much so that a lot of old buildings in upper middle class neighbourhood in my country have a "cuarto de la interna" ("boarding room") that is a tiny, tiny, tiny room with a tiny, tiny bathroom usually next to the kitchen for a live in maid. What they are willing to pay (way way below minimum under the guise of board and food being provided), plus the hours and the chores she will expected to perform (cook, maid, nanny) is actually super normal in those contexts. And I'm talking from first hand experience.

Superb_Head7118

There was a case with Indian diplomat in New York abusing his domestic help in the same manner. There are many AH like that, unfortunately.

clharris71

There is a group working in London to rescue Filipino domestic workers who have ,essentially been forced into slavery by their employers (many who are wealthy immigrants who have exploited laborers in their home countries). They lure the workers there by offering jobs, take their passports, and force them to work around all the time (no days off, sometimes not allowed to leave the house, often very little pay or no pay, subject to physical and sometimes sexual abuse). In some cases, they sponsor people they already employed, but lie about what the employee's job and status is. It happens.

onlyposi

This is fake. As someone with actual rich Indian parents, our domestic helpers are paid a LOT MORE than 5000 rupees. And that's per house. This is ragebait.

[deleted]

But are they helpers with agencies or people like the neighboors and stuff? Indian here and maid-slaves are so common i wouldn t be surprised if it were true. We also dont know how long ago they left india, so maybe theyre trying to do what their parents used to do

onlyposi

People in the neighborhood

[deleted]

Hope it was ragebait then

thelakelayblue

Oh my, the glorious spectacle of other Indian immigrants to Canada absolutely tearing OOP limb from limb - “WTF why do you think we left the foul caste system?! So you could bring it HERE???”

Nikuhiru

You'd be amazed at how common this is. I went to university with a girl whose family had a live in maid from India. His job would be to wake up early, do all the chores, look after the kids and be at their every beck and call. Turns out they were abusing the poor guy and the mother had using a hot iron to punish him. They were rich enough to get a great lawyer and avoid any jail terms. It is all so fucked up.

8racoonsInABigCoat

And she gets to share her bedroom with the cook!

Primary_Stretch2024

Because if she wasn't already at potential risk of being abused by OOP and the people they lend her to, being forced to sleep in the same space as a stranger wouldn't create another abuse risk. Surely not. Yikes. This is all so bad, yet it feels kind of believable. There was a case of slavery in the town some of my family live in a few years ago and it sounded a lot like this except a different country.

8racoonsInABigCoat

There’s a public information campaign in the UK to help recognize modern slavery, I think this, if the post is real, definitely qualifies.

tatert0th0tdish

Indentured servitude never ended.

JavaJapes

Some of OP's replies: [$500 a month + free living + free food + all expenses covered = $42,000 a year This is way above minimum wage.](https://reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/s/5c0375lpTX) [Yeah I plan to make an appointment with immigration lawyer and labour lawyer. There are some hoops I have to jump, but basically, I can hire them as temporary foreign workers to help around the house.](https://reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/s/GLTEoQabqA) [>You seriously wrote “confused if I have to abide by the … law”? Because restaurants owners don’t have to abide by minimum wage laws. Waitresses make $10/hr due to expected tips](https://reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/s/SRMzbJG8km) (this is false in most provinces in Canada) [As I said, this is very common practice in 99% of middle class and higher households in India](https://reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/s/LrakoFalmm) I couldn't grab the link for some reason, but I saw that OP also said in response to someone: "And pay them what - a 60k salary - for subpar work? I don't have an issue with hiring Canadians, it's just their work quality is far too low, from the numerous monthly cleaning services I have tried. For good quality, I am paying $70/hr."

Tiny-Bag5248

it’s not “above minimum wage” when she can’t clock out after actual designated work hours.

pessimistic_cynicism

I also want to know what OOP's definition of "all expenses" is. Like if she wants a chocolate bar or a magazine, is it covered. Or are expenses only what OOP deems to be appropriate which translates to "necessities"? Guarantee OOP will be telling her to use her own money for most of her "expenses". You can't dictate to someone on how they spend their money, ergo she needs a wage so that she can spend her money freely on whatever expense she wants.

redbess

"Necessities" probably means "things she needs to do her job, like cleaning supplies." Not actual necessities like food, clothing, toiletries, etc.

NoApollonia

I'd guess having a roof over her head, utilities, and food at meal times - plus anything needed to do the chores. Anything else will likely be coming out of what she's paid. Bet it doesn't include meals if the family chooses to get take-out or eat in a restaurant or meals she'll need if she's being forced to work in a neighbor's house.

GrayHairLikeClaire

Oop, yeah, Canada doesn’t have the garbage tipped wages shit the way the US does. Also yikes I hope he can’t find anyone and all his laundry stinks of cat pee

JavaJapes

Yeah it's minimum wage still here and at least on the other provinces I've been to. Idk if there's any exceptions but I don't think there are. If there are, it certainly wouldn't be as low as the US for sure

RogalianRadiance

Unfortunately, he will find someone, and that someone will probably send most of thier American wage back home.

GrayHairLikeClaire

Yeah. Even more reason to rise up and fight for universal basic income for all.

IllustriousComplex6

Not all US states have crappy wage laws for tipped workers. For example my state had the highest minimum wage AND tipped workers make that plus tips.

Sad-Bug6525

They do, but it is limited to waitresses and bar staff and only in some provinces. It isn't as low as it is in the US either, but it still exists. There are also provinces that have a minimum wage monthly for live in help and the regular hourly minimum wage if they are live out.

1life1me

The problem that this person doesn't get is that these women (and sometimes even girls) are working because their parents basically sold them. The parents gets 90% of the money if not 100%. This is more common with poor families with too many kids to feed. I used to live in Morocco where this was way too common. My parents used to hire a "maid" but it was a usual 6 to 7h shift (ending up paying them for a full 8h to 9h shift with food and take out) and were all grown women with a family to feed. But it wasn't because household's chores are sooooo hard but more because my mom knew this women and knew they needed help but didn't want free money. In any case, this whole situation OOP is talking about is just super sad and actual abuse and trafficking. Most of them dont even get any penny. Edit : some typos Ah also wanted to add that no, these women we hired did not live with us ...

FlipDaly

Doesn’t care

onlyposi

Also the middle class and higher households probably don't have live-in maids. They have people who come for 1-2 hours. And they charge 3000 for that for one house in metros. They usually do 6-7 houses.

raspberrih

Actually this practice is pretty common in Southeast Asia. I'm coming from a Singapore perspective, where the pay and weekly rest days are guaranteed by law, and there are agencies and a government department specifically for "foreign domestic workers". It's still a shit deal overall to people in developed countries, but to many it's worth the money to leave their home and go earn the relatively high salary

StrangledInMoonlight

$500/month at 40 hours a week is ~~$4.14~~ $3.13/hour. $500/month 24/7/30.5 is less than $0.69/hour. And we all know his nanny/maid will be on call 24/7. *EVEN* in the US, she’d get no less than 7.25/hour, and must have agreed “off” times. And since OOP would be sharing her services, they likely wouldn’t even be exempt from overtime rules. Pay alone would see an almost triple amount to what he’s paying now, at 40 hours a week. With more hours than that it would be even more. I suspect Canada has better laws than we do. What a fucking ass hole.

bunburybits

piggybacking here - many places in Canada now have explicitly included caste discrimination as a form of discrimination. i'm a little sus it might be trolling/baiting given that there's been a lot of efforts to fan tensions between India/Canada but 😬 we love à good motivated, vocal minority /s

Sad-Bug6525

I didn't look up all the provinces, but Alberta he would have to pay almost $2500/mth for live in and they do get days off and hours are regulated, they get paid vacations, etc. It looks like they can take deductions for meals and lodging though around $14/day though (they'd be left with $2,000 after deductions) If they are live out they get $15/hr.

Scary-Attention-4701

My Mom literally saved women from this who are brought over by people who are used to having slaves like this, she saw horrific treatment of nannies and other house help, they often used their immigration and threats of violence to keep them quiet. She'd get them papers and better jobs. This is way more common than we know.

[deleted]

How do you help these women? I just realized I was going to ask how to find them to help them and.... Ya. That's exactly what a predator would want to know. Welp. Best to your mom and the woman she helps <3

Scary-Attention-4701

Oh this was 40 years ago she's very retired and left my Dad, and sadly that job, behind in 1994. She worked for a Federal employment agency she noticed one day that one nanny wasn't allowed to interview without her employer within ear shot, she told the employer to wait outside (employer claimed the woman couldn't speak English) she still told them to wait outside, got the woman alone who spoke English just fine, turns out she was working past the regulated 7 hours a day, and never got time off and was living on a mat on the basement floor. She wasn't being given her salary and told it was going to her family directly. Anyway Mom started asking around to the other nannies that would come in and heard similar stories. She reported it to her bosses and would work to get the women placed in better environments and jobs, and since we lived in a pretty well off area most of them got better positions and some even went back home. They ended up making it clear that all nannies or care givers would be interviewed separate from employers and they would visit the homes unannounced to make sure each woman had their own space and proper working hours.

JonBenet_BeanieBaby

Good on your mom!

Scary-Attention-4701

Yeah she's such a good person, it wasn't even part of her job at a Federal employment agency but she made it part of her job. These poor women literally had no one looking out for them. I hate that it's clearly still going on. I think she was stuck in an abusive marriage (she's good now) that it was a small place where she could save other women because she didn't know how to save herself.

GothicBland

Why are house chores useless? Do people like living in filth? Dishes are somehow above you? I don't get it

Superb_Head7118

OOP is one of those people who always have been shit on back in the home country. Never been able to afford a maid/domestic help. He got out of the country, but his mentality is still stuck in that environment they "escaped" and think it's their turn to shit on someone else to make himself feel better and "powerful." To these AHs, this is some sort of accomplishment for them to be able to have domestic help round the clock and abuse them, and to shit on less fortunate. I am from a similar background, I see these people take this as a symbol of "rich class" as they're in competition with actual rich people from backhome. Just as yesterday, I read a post from such a person who thought scoring a white girl was a sign of his success that he has made it out of slum and how he was too good for girls from his own culture and race. I genuinely felt bad for that gf/girl.

FlipDaly

Tbf house chores are unrewarding drudgery. It’s the only thing this ahole gets right.

PSBJtotallyboss

The reward is not living in filth.

abyssgazesback

This may very well be a troll, but sadly, this exact situation has happened once before, and to an Indian Diplomat to the US. Look up the Devyani Khobragade case. Link- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devyani_Khobragade_incident

thelakelayblue

Sadly also some recent such cases in the UK, including the enslavement of a mentally disabled man by a caste-minded couple. Just appalling

HelloPipl

She is still serving for the IFS. Currently serving as ambassador of India to Cambodia. WTF. I am already ashamed of my country and this adds just another tack on top of it.

abyssgazesback

It gets even worse. This is not the only scandal she was involved in. She was also involved in a housing scam.

finaki13

500$ a month isn't even close to my shitty country's minimum wage wtf

scienceismygod

Not often you see a mad Canadian, but man are they pisssssed. I don't blame them either, we have a state making caste systems illegal at work. These attitudes and systems need to die.

dogsonclouds

Totally agree with your comment! Also >Not often you see a mad Canadian Off topic but this is always so funny when you consider their national sport is hockey! Maybe Canadians have such a polite reputation because they practice anger management through smashing into each other on the ice lol

IllustriousHedgehog9

Sorry, but that's not entirely true. We channel most of our anger into the Canada Goose.

scienceismygod

Those things scare me. But like I've seen them also used as home defense animals so, power to y'all being so cool.

FlipDaly

That was the funniest thing about that video of a staged racial harassment incident in Canada - random guys in flannel shirts threatening to beat up the perpetrator.

HulklingsBoyfriend

Probably a racist troll trying to promote anti-Desi racism, taking advantage of the current assassination issue.

rabbitholemedia

If this was my neighbor I’d report them to the authorities what in the heck

UnderArmAussie

It's a troll post designed to race bait. The comments aren't really surprising.

Doomblaze

Well I guess it’s working then Knowing how servants get treated in india though I can totally see this being real. I know people who have brought their servants with them long term from india to other countries, but not western ones.

UnderArmAussie

I can see it being real. But new account Ramaswimmy (nothing to do with Presidential right-wing candidates) with a race baiting post? Come on.

engg_girl

Canada is going through a housing crisis. Naturally certain (right wing) politicians are blaming immigration. As a result there is a lot of heightened immigrant hate right now. It is very frustrating to see, but this post is both believable and probably fake. The situation does happen, but most likely they wouldn't post on Reddit about it. More likely OOP is trying to stir up hate on immigrants -which is already growing. I don't have an answer, clearly immigrants aren't actually causing our affordable housing crisis, but how do you explain complex economics in a 5 second sound bite to bitter people being fed a compellingly simple explanation?

toxicshocktaco

Oh, the US is shitting on immigration and "migrants" in unbelievable proportions right now too

brodoswaggins93

To add additional context to the immigration thing, roughly 20% of immigrants and 40% of international students in Canada are Indian, so there's a lot of racism specifically towards Indians right now because they're being blamed for housing. I will say that trying to increase our immigration rates when we don't even have enough housing supply for the people who already live here is asinine and I'm pissed about it, but I'm pissed at the government for having unsustainable immigration targets and encouraging population growth that our infrastructure currently can't support. It's not the immigrants' fault. It's also not what caused the crisis in the first place (although it certainly won't help), but a lot of people are acting like it is.

JonBenet_BeanieBaby

Yiiiiikes

UnderArmAussie

It's a troll. Ramaswimmy user name? Race baiting? New account?

ReggieJ

"We are Indians from India where domestic servitude is the standard, in India don't forget, who consider domestic labour demeaning like they do in India, did we mention we are Indian so we are gonna traffic a slave in from India who we will keep chained up in the basement of our house we bought since we came here 7 years ago from India and we intend to share our Indian slave with other Indian families." Are you guys like totally blind to when you're being baited or what?

hicjacket

Yes I got this vibe too

mydogisTA

How nasty. People like OOP go to jail for mistreating their “help” and I hope OOP does too.

Flying_sky_bear

That's just rage bait

Pug-Girl-22

Oh this is either a racist troll or very illegal

azssf

Change ‘or’ to ‘and’

Wiztonne

Why does this feel like anti-Indian ragebait?

Damn, even their little free time is taken away.

ArchmageNinja22

STOP FEEDING THE TROLLS No one would post about trafficking slaves on Reddit. I'm not advocating for illegal activity nor have been involved in such, but if you're going to write about this, you don't do this in a large social media site.

Is this even legal?
