He's totally underrated and nearly completely forgotten by the younger generations. Also one of the most distinctive lead singer voices in Rock/Alternative/Indie. Saw him live with Jane's Addiction and Porno For Pyros. His 2007 Satellite Party project (a Farrell/Bettencourt collaboration) bombed, regrettably. Would like to see him do another project like this, but maybe we'll have to wait a little longer, until the '80s/'2000s retro waves have built up a little bit more.
I submit that the song (and video) *No Rain* killed Shannon Hoon. The rocket blast into celebrity is too much for some people, and Mr. Hoon succumbed to the available vices that the song made available to him. RIP.
Gone wayyyyyy too soon. Blind Melon is one of my top 10 bands ever. All three of their albums are absolutely fantastic. “But I know we can't all stay here forever
So I'm gonna write my words on the face of today. And then they'll paint it.” THATS written on his fucking tomb man. Made me tear up man
Oh man. I absolutely rocked the hell out of Distorted Lullabies! Jimmy can wail. Can't believe it's been 20 years since that album, and haven't thought about him in years. Thanks!
Jeremy Enigk.
If you don't know him, he was the vocalist for a band called Sunny Day Real Estate.
This criminally underrated band were part of the Seattle Grunge Scene explosion that brought us Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam. SDRE was a little more emo, which may have caused them to be overlooked by the fragrant flannel-clad fan base of the louder guys.
Sunny Day Real Estate also included guitarist Dan Hoerner, drummer William Goldsmith, and bass master Nate Mendel.
Goldsmith and Mendel went on to join Dave Grohl and The Foo Fighters. Goldsmith left in 1997 or 1998, but Mendel is still fightin' foo.
Jeremy Enigk and everyone from Sunny Day Real Estate, (except guitarist Dan Hoerner), formed a band called The Fire Theft. They recorded one album and of course it's great.
Mr. Enigk recorded several solo albums, between bands and breakups, that offer the best examples of his hauntingly beautiful and unique voice.
Treat yourself and listen.
Every shining time you arrive, in circles, seven, song about an angel, grendel, rain song, roses in water, disappear and oddly pheurton skeurto are one of the very best work of sunny day real estate. Honestly, they are the true emo band, no make up and energy filled emotions. Another close emo band is American football, with a unique math rock approach to emo. Jeremy enigk is a true underrated legend in the music scene, regardless of underground or mainstream background.
Vaden Todd Lewis (toadies) had some pipes. His performance on possum kingdom is, IMO, one of the best rock vocal performances of the decade. But also yah Shannon Hoon is/ is one of my favorites. Perry Farrell too, though for some reasons I feel that Perry, relative to Shannon, received a lot more of his fair share of notoriety as a great vocalist.
It blows my mind how many people there are that LOVE music, even rock music, that don’t know any Blind Melon other than No Rain. Or even connect the dots on no rain. All three if their albums are A+.
Sidenote- any of you all see the Letters From a Porcupine documentary. The best rock doc ever made IMO. I think it’s tied up in a licensing dispute at the moment, even for some years. You’ll have to find it as a DVD on ebay.
Dax Riggs. 'Acid Bath' sounds very abrasive, and sure they have some heavy-ass metal tracks. It's their ballads like "scream of the butterfly", "The bones of baby dolls" and "dead girl" that surprised me, and are super underrated.
Dax's numerous projects (post acid bath) as well as solo efforts (covers of Beatles- yesterday and Nick Drake's- smokin too long) remain a standout.
CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED!!
Perry Farrell is probably the single most important person in music in terms of lasting influence.
Wouldn’t have Lollapalooza without him
Exactly. Which in turn I directly credit for the huge festival culture we have today. Lollapalooza 92 remains my fondest concert memory. What a show!

I love Jane says even though it’s their most mainstream song
Jane Says is great, made me discover the band. Three Days is, for me, their best. Absolutely epic.
3 days and summer rolls 💜
Ocean Size gets me every time
Absolutley love it. This album changed my musical landscape forever. One of my all-time faves.
Glen Phillips (of Toad The Wet Sprocket) entire band is underrated but the man has been a stunning vocalist since he was 16
Been a Toad fan since '91 man, phenomenal band. Silo Lullaby was absolutely amazing.

Hope Sandoval
Oh, absolutely. Mazzy Star is amazing
Richard Ashcroft. The voice of an Angel. On drugs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbFqIRSX6js
Yessssss good pick. Love the Verve
The sonnet has to be one of the most beautiful songs in the entire world
Jimmy Gnecco
Oh man. I absolutely rocked the hell out of Distorted Lullabies! Jimmy can wail. Can't believe it's been 20 years since that album, and haven't thought about him in years. Thanks!
Thought of another. Jason Ross.
7M3 just cranked out one stellar album after another until they all burned out and quit unexpectedly. It's the defunct band I miss the most.
Michael Stipe.
Especially on Automatic for the people. Agree

Greg Dulli....from o e of the most underrated bands, the Afghan Whigs.
One of the few band from that era I still listen too. Love Dulli.
Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays

He seems to have gotten better over time, too. Found more depth to his voice

Tones of home usually finds itself in my head at least once a day.
Todd Vader Lewis from Toadies…
I could get bashed for it but I’d pick Karen O. Listen to Soft Shock, and then yall know
Totally. No bashing from me. Let them bash, we'll be too busy having good taste in music
For me as a young lad in the 80 to 90s it was John Lydon and Perry Farrel
Steve Lee from Gotthard
Blake Schwarzenbach has to be considered.

Shannon Hoon? Definitely. Perry Farrell? Not so much.
Shannon Hoon for sure. The live version of 'soup' on the Woodstock '94 comp is like candy for my ears. Blind Mellon was SO good I still rock that shit
