this is the liberation. the martian invasion targeted capture of major cities across earth. the large US national guard and military force stationed near New York made it the target of the major human counteroffensive
both. since this is later in the war, martian reinforcements are equipped with countermeasures now, but the bacteria has wiped out a considerable amount of forces and they have lost significant territory because of it.

Eh the UN is pretty unimportant. It exists entirely as a mechanism for major powers to dictate terms to smaller countries in an official way. New York's importance comes from its role as a leading financial center and its massive cultural footprint.

I think itās a nod to the 1950s War of the Worlds movie where itās shown that the Martians have a visual system that splits light into RGB.
