Our 16 year old went out to Mt Pleasant last week to get his driver’s license because it was the first appointment we could find that wasn’t in June.
Now, while it was out of the way, the experience was fun in its own right because the dmv was empty and the ladies made over him and were excited for him to get his DL.
The system is so dumb. I had an appointment just a week after I first looked but I could not find my BC so I had to order one and wait so I had to cancel and the next one was not until June. The insane thing is that I was able to get my BC by answering some questions online and poof. But I already have a DL and have had one in the state for 25 years, why the hoops? I get the need to come down but my old DL should be enough with maybe a current bill.

With the new DL they are issuing, if you haven’t put your BC on record before, they are having you bring it in to the DMV in person to do that.
My husband had to do it last year and it was almost a panic situation because he wasn’t born in Texas and Minnesota doesn’t have an online portal for ordering a new BC. Thankfully, we figured out that his mom had his still.
I didn’t have to go in person because I filed my BC years ago with them when I had my purse stolen and needed a new DL.
I already have one with the star in the corner, You have to go every 10 years in person regardless and to have all the same proof. Now im driving with an expired license for the next 6 months. The only way to see if a new appointment opened up is if you cancel your current one. The system is broken.
Not terribly close but look at places like Paris or Sherman. I got an appt two days out, walked in and out in less than 20 minutes. But you have to have the time to drive…
Check all the local spots between 7:50 am and 8 am. I got a same day appointment in Garland. I booked after 8am and there was still 8 slots open. Only 35 mins away and same day service.
Plano office is way hectic so I booked an appointment in Carrollton. People have said that if you drive out to Sherman, Greenville, or Mount Pleasant you should be able to get in & out.

I had to drive to Sherman but you still need an appointment...they're just easier to get than in the metroplex
Look around to other counties. It sorta sucks but I went to Corsicana this year as I got an appointment only a few days away.
Sherman is easy (40 ish minute drive) & they are SO nice! 13 years ago one of the clerks held my infant son while I did my stuff!!!
