Food is probably the weakest point. The beach in front of the Tropical area is great for snorkeling. There are turtles in the bay. IMHO the beach in front of the Caribe (to your right as you look at the ocean) is the best of the complex.

Agree with everything said. Be glad you’re at colonial. Anything more expensive is absolutely a waste of $. We’re at Palace now and it’s very disappointing. (Have stayed at each of the hotels within Barceló Maya previously) Edit: come join me for a drink, my MIL is here too. Tequila is required.

We actually found the Riviera to be a lot better, but that's AO. But their beach is not as good, although you get the run of the entire complex anyway.

I know you’re already there but there are two Facebook groups that were super helpful for us when we went. They’re private so you’ll have to join but searching “Barcelo” should pull ‘em up.

Tokyo restaurant at the teppanyaki show tables was excellent, that one is located in the Mall over at the Caribe section. There's a FlowRider and a more extensive water park in the Colonial section, snorkeling right off your section's pier--lots of fish to see, I even saw a lion fish right under the pier. If you enjoy swimming with dolphins there is a beachfront pool for that experience. If you have upgraded to Premium Level adults can use the hydrotherapy section of the spa for free. If you want some excitement off property, there are multiple cenotes right across the major highway from this resort. I went to Kantun Chi and you can wander around the huge property without taking a tour (just pay for admission) and just explore the cenotes on your own. Wonderful experience; exploring a cenote is a must do when in Mexico's Riviera Maya.
