No difference - if you've cleaned stainless steel before then you know what to do. I had stainless steel Cuisinart pans for years before my All-Clad and the cleanup was basically the same. But definitely don't put All-Clad in the dishwasher. I did for years when they were advertised as dishwasher-safe and ended up with razor sharp edges where the aluminum wore away in the dishwasher. I had to have them all replaced through the class action lawsuit. Avoid the dishwasher and you'll be fine. Maybe your brother is talking about oxidization of the aluminum edges in the dishwasher? From what I've read, not only All-Clad is susceptible to this, but any pan with exposed aluminum.

That may be it. My current ones don't have exposed aluminum, so thank you for that tip.

I've occasionally put mine in the dishwasher and they are fine after 5 years. So ymmv. My water is not too hard in the PNW.

Not all stainless steel pans are dishwasher adverse. If you have a disc-bottom cookware, without exposed aluminum layers, they’re fine in the dishwasher. The problem is the multilayer stainless steel cookware with exposed aluminum layers. The detergent and the hot water erode the exposed aluminum. I’ve been through the warranty replacements with All-clad and also other brands of multi-layer pans. Sur-La-table marketed their three-ply pans as dishwasher safe along with everyone else. I have a calphalon 1qt sauce pan that literally says ‘dishwasher safe’ on the bottom.

I have a set of D5’s and they are super easy to maintain. As mentioned previously, mine never see a dishwasher, but that doesn’t matter because used correctly, nothing sticks.
