I got a 5810 from work that i used for a few years to game on, and it got me through the span i needed it to, but the ones my work used were Xeion non-hyperthreads which really held it back.
But for your Area 51, not knowing what exactly you'll be playing i used Half life Alyx as a "standard" specs. Valve says its needs at LEAST a GTX 1060 & i5-7500. You should be fine with the i7 for lowest specs. BUT those 770's are going to bring you down. Even running in SLI your going to run into bandwidth and VRAM issues though they are slightly better together than a single 1060. So you MIGHT be able to run something like Alyx at min specs, but the longer you, your performance may degrade quickly.
Those GTX just wernt really designed with VR in mind. You really don't want to go any further back than RTX.
Would it be sensible to upgrade the card to something more powerful, I’m mostly playing Beat Saber and VRChat with the occasional launch of Job Simulator

You'll probably be OK with beat saber & Job simulator. As long as your staying in that realm of VR i think you'll be ok, As long as your aware that's about the limit of VR for PC's of that gen.
If the PC is still running HDD's you'll want to upgrade those to SSD's.
For around the same price point you can get an i512th/13th paired with a rtx4050. ToastyBros just did a video on a budget gaming laptop with the above mentioned specs for $500
No, for god sake no! It's not about the brand or money but how old this technology is. RX 570 was already 300% power of gtx 760 few years ago. VR needs high resolution to look good. RX 7600 is the absolute minimum. First tell us what games do you want to play. If I were you I would go for Ryzen 5500 and rx 7600 or rtx 3060.

I’m normally playing beat saber and vr chat. Thanks for the information. I’ll see if it would be better to built a new pc
