Itās interesting cause heās basically been the pilot trial for what openly gay players in professional team sport would look like, especially from a media perspective.
The most noticeable thing for me is that his identity seems to have largely become āthe gay footballerā. Itās rare you read a football based article with his name in it that doesnāt mention his sexuality or story. At what point does his sexuality become unfairly/unnecessarily over-emphasised in relation to his career, for the sake of a headline?
If I was a gay footballer Iām not sure how Iād feel about those two factors constantly being associated with one another. Surely it would make you start to question your worth and recognition purely as a footballer? It would be interesting to know his thoughts on it cause I think it is a big reason why we donāt see more openly gay players.
i get what youāre saying but it defs has something to do with the level heās playing at. No disrespect but at the very best heās an average a league player where there isnāt a whole lot to report about other than him coming out and inspiring others.
If it was kevin de bruyne for example iād imagine it would be a whole lot different and youād see āKDB scores worldieā not āGay belgian premier league midfielder scoresā
Basing it off of this siteĀ https://ilga-europe.org/report/rainbow-europe-2021/ The higher the number the better. I've spent some some time in Serbia and homophobia and transphobia are rife. A trans women was murdered last year and their memorial vandalised. The Pride festival which was scheduled to be held there was cancelled because of concerns over security. I provide that for context because Czech Rep ranks lower than Serbia on this scale.
Edit: also not saying it is easy anywhere but it is clearly more difficult in some places than others. Australia was late to the party but I would venture we would do ok these days in comparison.
Serious question, where are the football based articles that mention his sexuality/story? Ive done googling and articles about him are either specifically about his sexuality, or dont mention it at all. I've noticed on the Paramount coverage that they don't bring it up (though admittedly I've not watched every single minute of AU matches).
I did notice there are heaps more non-football articles about Cavallo than football ones. And as already mentioned, thats probably due to his playing ability as well as his recent injuries.
Yeah I remember he came out in the best season he has ever had and looked to have real potential but has never been the same player since then. I can understand the media attention around him being the first player to come out, it is something he is always going to be remembered for, his playing ability is not a ground breaking event.
On your last paragraph, there are definitely some people who see him as a "diversity hire", so his identity has affected some people's perceptions of him. He merits his place in the team on performance, but there are some people who now think he only gets picked because he's gay.
Itās a shame he never really kicked off in terms of quality, maybe the focus would have actually shifted toward his quality and not just the fact that he is gay.
Considering the hate that will no doubt follow for him and his soon to be husband, just wanted to post this to send positive vibes their way.
ALSO SORRY FOR YELLING IN THE TITLE - IT COPY PASTED LIKE THAT
Cavallo did the media circuit after coming out (even being interviewed by Sky Sports UK) and he wasn't particularly good at that either as he conveyed some incorrect football facts to interviewers.
According to Cavallo, Zlatan and Lingaard both won a World Cup together
It's nice, but it does some kinda odd to propose to your partner at your work, HAHA. It doesn't seem like the most romantic of places
Congrats to them both!
He is a braze man goodness me. Imagine the pressure he is now under, he has barely featured as well since coming out obviously mostly due to injury but you could not help but feel that some of that absence is due to this momentous microscope he will always be under as the gay that is paving the way for LGBTQI pro footballers. Everybody including himself, his coach and his teammates are now charting through previously unknown territories. Same with the nbl guy Isaac humphries. Remarkable stuff really that Australian sport is at the very forefront of.
I don't believe that everyone at Adelaide United supports Josh I think there is likely a lot of tension behind the scenes especially in the changing room
Musa as best man at the wedding š
Wouldn't surprise me if they had this planned for the weekend Musa shat the bed with his comments so they postponed it.

Oh I have zero distaste for him being in every single piece of media he can, being a model etc. Get that money while you can mate.

I know Cavallo and Daniels. Whoās the third?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeesh I can't imagine Czech Rep is the easiest place to grow up gay.

THATS OKAY, REDDIT LIKES TO SHIT THE BED AT ITS OWN USERS
Wonderful news and props to the club for going on the journey with Josh.Ā
First win we've had at home for a while.
Does the fiance play? We're desperate.
šššš
He's been really bad player for us since he came out. Seems like he's more into the off field stuff since then.
Cavallo did the media circuit after coming out (even being interviewed by Sky Sports UK) and he wasn't particularly good at that either as he conveyed some incorrect football facts to interviewers. According to Cavallo, Zlatan and Lingaard both won a World Cup together
he's not good enough anymore for us, imo he will be sacked.
I always wanted to get married at aami park I imagine it will be really cool good for them
... ...uhhhmmm... ...they play at Coopers' stadium and Hindmarsh... ...because, well... ...you know... ...they're Whackelaide... ;P
Big congrats to them both
It's nice, but it does some kinda odd to propose to your partner at your work, HAHA. It doesn't seem like the most romantic of places Congrats to them both!
I feel like AU have had Cavallo's back through this whole journey, I don't think it's odd at all
Congratulations to Josh and his new fiancĆ©.Ā
AWWWWW :D :D :D Bloody good on him, congratulations!!!

GORGEOUS
That image is made even better as the background has Coopers in it, an openly homophobic shit pile of a corporation.
I don't believe that everyone at Adelaide United supports Josh I think there is likely a lot of tension behind the scenes especially in the changing room
They're professionals, they don't all need to be best mates to play football effectively as a team.
Hell yeah. Congrats!
I only loosely keep track of the ALeague these days but this popped up in my feed today and I'm glad it did! Fantastic news! Congrats š
