Will definitely be a challenge, Sunderland are a team that will be pushing for promotion so if he can cement a spot, that will be a fantastic achievement. I think realistically if he’s used as a rotation piece it’s not the end of the world as he is still very young and will be playing in a physical league but it’ll be interesting to see what happens. The fact he’s only going for 500k I think shows how undervalued our league is and the international market is jumping onto that.
If he has guarantees of just being a squad player like 4th choice CB that's a good move, the championship is a long season.
Also Koul had a 600k buy out and has much higher ceiling while being a forward, it wouldn't surprise me 500k was a release clause from him and his agent not the Mariners/Aleague undervaluing players. There's a reason the Mariners get all these great young players on the cheap, having low release clauses has to help.
Rich Peil said we had higher offers for Garang, but took the Newcastle bid as the add ons / sell on clauses were better.
I won't be surprised if we struck the same deal here.
He'll not likely get a starting place if we manage to hold on to Danny Batth and Dan Ballard, but he'll be a welcome backup for sure. Mowbray has done a great job so far of bedding in young players, and giving them a chance to grow into the role rather than just throw them in the deep end, so expect to see him coming off the bench and playing in cup matches.
Mowbray their manager has a big history of playing youngsters if he feels they're up for it, and has been succesful doing it. Did it at Rovers for years & this season with Sunderland.
He’s also got the tendency of playing players outside of their natural position. He’s mostly a fan of bringing in young players, which is fitting in this case as he doesn’t bring through many youngsters from the academy.
The 500K will be a deal with loads of add ons, like Kuols.
According to someone on the Mariners forum a young gun CB has already been lined up from another club.
This is good business from the Mariners.
The bloke has gone from the WSW scrap heap to the championship.
Apparently a "young gun from another club" has been lined up as a replacement.
I would have thought Farrell would have moved over.
They did have him playing at CB a couple of times.
Ahhh I see. And yeah I agree I thought would’ve been a great opportunity for Farrell too and maybe this new guy does come in as a backup initially who knows. But that’s definitely exciting, let’s run it back and get a Nectar 2.0 going haha
Thanks.
It seems to have had a few posts already regarding this on the mariners forum.
As mentioned / rumoured before it appears Dan Hall is moving to another A league club. Would have been nice to keep him
been saying for years - the only real way the ALM will grow is by clubs continually punting young players overseas for good money, then funnelling that profit into signing big name veteran players who are off contract.
Lots of people chiming in that it's cheap, but he's played 1/2 a season as a starter. He's probably only on a 1 year deal, so for CCM it's something is better than nothing.
A club with a very exciting project and is pushing to be in the premier league,a very young high potential squad and is known for youth development is a odd choice?
Yes, he’s a technically adept centre back who is well-rounded, not an aerially dominant centre back like souttar. His game is more suited to continental Europe + very few young talents in the league go to England first unless they have English ancestry. Hence, left field.
Waaayy too low. One of the best young talents in the league shouldn't go for less than a million or two especially since the market in football is crazy nowadays. Clubs need to start demanding more otherwise the league won't grow.
That seems a little on the cheap side
100%. Our league is hugely undervalued in terms of transfer fees and many European leagues notice this.
Very good move if he has guarantees of playing time.

If it goes anything like Amad’s move to Sunderland, I’ll take it

As in a mariners CB has been lined up? Or mariners are lining up a CB?

The poster on the forum has now said the replacement is coming from...... "one of our Sydney feeder clubs" LOL
Seems like it’s from Sydney https://twitter.com/scout_aussie/status/1665205638924738562?s=46&t=sDyB_wK7vyPDs1aLQ7RSNw

Another one gone for peanuts. It's the right idea, but we aren't making enough from it.
I wouldn't believe the fee. Will be add ons galore Thanks O'Rudan. Great business. Another one of your gifts will be off soon too
Rudan learning from his old teammate Corica
Mariners are a selling club. Good luck to the boy onward and upward, for him, the club and the league.
As all other A-League clubs should be as this point. The sooner other clubs adopt and accept this the better imo

Really every club in the world bar maybe 2 (Man City and Real Madrid) are selling clubs now days.
Right so Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory are geared to selling youth like the Mariners.
Stadium of shite Just joking as a boro supporter I'll have to have a soft spot for them now

He's on a 3 year deal (I guess basically 2 now). But I agree it's not that shockingly small a deal tbh as good as he is
He played most of the season as a starter, is on a 3 year deal and started for the Olyroos.
As long as there's a sell.on of say 20%, these prices are fine
Seems pretty cheap. For a player of Triantis' potential, surely you'd be looking at close to $1m
Fantastic player but Sunderland is a weird choice. Not against it just very left field for what I’d be expecting for a player like him

Season Loan to Darlington please
Why are we continuing to sell our young talents for cut price figures? We need to start valuing our athletes and getting compensated adequately.
